This is the best narration and visual aids I have seen in a guide period. I want to jump right in, then I remembered I have only been playing for 2 days and have nothing unlocked.

Keyboard and mouse is the suggested optimal control scheme for what you are seeing here. Getting fine grained control for accuracy with a stick requires high grade hardware, and even then it doesn't quite stack up to kbm. You can do it with a bit of practice 🙂
@@vengefire The OP says they use stick and throttle for this, which takes either a $1K hotas setup, smoothing software outside the game, or was a lie. look at the smoothness of the aiming at all times. You cant do that with a t16k joystick. Its input is physically not possible.
@@vengefire Sorry for the late response, I didn't see your reply until just :O. The two biggest problems I have with 'control' using a kb and mouse are throttle manipulation and dealing with FA OFF. The best guide to cold orbiting. Thanks Kate. I really don't think you need to use 2 vectors for cold orbiting, I orbit with the goids trail off to my right, i use right thrusters, you end up in a swinging orbit with the goid, you get its momentum along with it, the only time i use downward thrust is if i begin to stall, you cant stall in front of the goid anything more than a cyclops and you will take huge damage in a shieldless build. I really tried using both down/right thrusters and i just couldn't steady my aim, so maybe its a me issue, i'm not at your skill level ether. Check out my latest up load of a Basilisk kill, tell me what ya think. o7
yeah it takes practice to get your aim in line with the correct orbiting technique. in my opinion control input method also makes a big difference. I have been watching your recent videos too :) good work on the Medusa and your Basilisk today
Awesome vid never heard of cold orbiting till this vid appeared on my home list thing. Way harder than it looks since I can't make heads or tails of flight assist off lol

Gotta say as someone that currently does exclusively cargo and exploration, but is thinking of giving AX a try, this is all WAY more complicated than I thought itd be, but also looks really cool... but I think I should probably get more practice at just flying under thrusters first, since I spend almost all of my time in supercruise other than take off and landing (although have taken up mining recently, so maybe those asteroid belts could provide a good training area for manuvering)
this comment is a bit old, but if you're still playing: I do suggest ship combat first, even if you fly exclusive FA-on. let yourself get used to real-space flying before taking on FA-off combat. very well worth the effort, I'd say thargoid combat is the most fun I've had a long, long time. tip: the cobra MK3 is a great beginner's ship that can do everything. fit a couple lasers and take some combat missions! but, hey, don't worry about missing it if you're not into combat. ED has something for everyone, but you don't **have** to do everything. most important is to have fun!
Seen a few of your videos now . Well presented and explained . Also has made me realise just how much is involved in AX combat !! I have yet to get to this . Im planning on a Krait 2 as that seems to be a popular ship . I have,a type 10 but Im not sure its fast enough or maneuverable enough . I use it for AFK massacre missions. It seems perfect for that ( made couple of billion in credits ) . I use a Vulture for CZ massacre missions. That is the extent of my combat . This is interesting , I plan on doing scouts at first . Think I would struggle with the advanced stuff . Plus Im on console so the controller is not as flexible for use in weapon fire groups . My initial problem here would be having gauss cannons on separate fire buttons and then be able to still launch heatsinks . A lot of fire group switching which is the limitation when on console , as Ive found .
Great tutorial. You told we need to move 90 degrees perpendicular to the trail of the thargoid. but according to the diagram. then you shouldn't be able to see the petals (heart) of the goid. but when you are cold orbiting all i see is goid is facing you. which means goid is able to move in directions they are not facing.
Subbed... def more and more interested in these cold builds... our group have moved from gauss cannons to shard cannon near insta kills on the tier 5 stuff but I’d love to move up
That was a really cool vid. I've not heard of this strategy before. Guess I will have to improve my badly sub-par FA-off skills. How many heatsinks do you wind up firing off, btw?
I have a question. In order to prevent the bug matching his trajectory to your vector. Why does the manoeuvre require rolling for orientation for escape by side thust? Why not just roll whilst continuing to down thrust and escape that way? By the way you guys are the top gurus of bug killing. I watch your videos with complete amazement and not a little jealousy.
That sounds hard. Going to try it though! There is a LOT to remember and know how to do in order to do AX. It's almost like starting the game over again, it is so much.
Im working on FA off especially for the flak cannon, but I seem to be ok doing cold orbiting with FA on. At least, I can see the thargie's fire missing me. Am I right in assuming that I will be cold orbiting by constantly applying downward/sidewards thrust instead of in bursts with FA off? Awesome skills - Im watching your complete Thargoid War series at the moment and am learning loads
Hi Chris, yes orbiting with FA ON is also achievable and even some of the top Ace ranking pilots in the AXI use FA ON. it's trickier because as you have deduced it requires constant input but if it is working for you then you should definately stick with it ;) and thank you for watching out videos! :)
Hey thanks for this great video. At the moment I have an issue keeping the thargoid at optimum range, it always turn and get away which makes aiming very difficult.
Thank you. The only issue I have is I use an xbox style controller instead of a Hotas on PC, while up/down & lateral thrust is ok I have trouble with forwards/backwards thrust. When I'm cold orbiting I'm forced to use main throttle to maintain distance but this often causes the orbiting to become too erratic. The result being poor aiming at the hearts. I don't really want to use a shield tank, any advice? (My anti-xeno ship is a shieldless Cutter).
would you cool faster if you used more beam lasers? what about a full beam laser build with long range? the extra damage from no fall off would match the gauss cannons?
In more technical terms, firing a beam laser at the same time draws more distributor power and can either result in less gauss firerate or more heat generated by the gauss (distributors are weird) and causing heat spiking. It's way better to just fire a split gauss firegroup and rely entirely on heatsinks while the beam assists outside of attack runs.
You say vent beams don't work but I find I'm able to fire a vent beam and a single gauss and stay under 20%. That may not be optimal damage for time but it does work. That's on a krait and I imagine a ship with more hardpoint could make it work
great video, but i've just got a quick question about the orbit part of cold orbiting: why do you need to use lateral thrusters? couldn't you just align yourself so the interceptor trail is always below you and just hold the downward thrusters? I ask because i'm having some real trouble thrusting in 3 directions at the same time while keeping my aim steady, and was wondering whether there was an easier way.
First off.... awesome vid Citizen Kate (and Will)... fantastic explanation. Subbed :) Secondly, I have a question: Does anyone have any suggestions for axis control on a Dual Sense or other handheld gamepad? Up/Down and Fwd/Rev are fine, but I can't come up with a sensible way to control lateral thrust. Any advice/points in the right direction would help. Thank you again! :)
Very good guide. Whats your view on handling the swarm with a cold built. Do you mainly ignore it (depending on the interceptor type), stay below 20 degrees and avoid it, or take it down before the attack run?
Always take the swarm down before attacking. The exception is if the Thargoid is enraged, in which case, reduce the swarm down to 10 or so, then go for the attack. Once a heart is killed, enrage ends and you can dispose of the remaining swarm. Note that the swarm does not care how cold you are, boost away, flip round in FA Off and shoot them down that way.
You're amazing, so jealous of your skill! Something I'm trying to figure out is how your are setting your fire groups. Specifically, how you're firing your heatsinks without changing fire groups. It appeared... like you were manually firing heatsinks one at a time, one after the other thru 3 sets of heatsinks....but you didn't change fire groups. Can you explain how to do this?
I use fa on/off on a toggle... It's wildly distracting for me to have to use my throttle as rapidly as leaving fa off.. Anyway... You think that will still do the trick?
My buddy and i do attack runs. though we only had AX multi cannons and we only managed to take out one or two hearts. Then again it was out second and third attempt at a goid kill

Don't write yourself off too easily, I started AX last year and I was predictably hopeless at first. 2 weeks ago, I killed my first Hydra solo, and these are the exact mechanics I used to achieve it.
I use a HOTAS, specifically the VKB Gladiator NXT stick and TCWS throttle, but at the AXI there are members that use everytihng from Keyboard + Mouse to Xbox Controller :) It's all about practice and persistence - everyone is bad at FA OFF to begin with but in time it becomes second nature
@@Citizen_Kate Agreed, I use FA off regularly to "slide" when its preferred. but my TM 16000 (3rd warranty so far) is giving out again, and the 3dPro is showing its age as well. Twitchy controls and no center make for difficult thruster control. I'm trying to hold out for Virpil / warthog to become availalbe again. VKB comparible to Virpil I presume.
@@Citizen_Kate Thanks for info, after trying to stay cold i was able to get to the last heart without losing 10% hull, but my shots are very hard to land in FA off... got a case of the wobbles with the krait. Wish there was a way to adjust the rates... I wish VKB had throttle though...
There are terms and words i don't understand because i'm not a native so i had to visit dictionaries lol I still don't understand what is lateral thrusting oh well i can always use hit n run tactic if things goes sideways, at least until i get the hang of it
Hey absolutely brilliantly explained thank you! But I just noticed, you maybe tagged this under the hella wrong game?! 😅 Unless of course you're from the distant future where Star Citizen fully releases!
haha you dont :D you just accept that you are going to die a lot and always pick yourself up and get back out there when you do - but also so long as your ship is fast enough you can generally make an escape ;)
I can promise you though, that by learning to die gracefully you will learn how not to die ;) it can be a long road but very rewarding - the feeling when it all falls into place is really great

Can you link a build for your ship?
Do you get 0% heat generation simply by not having shields turned on? Or does it require more specific setups?
you use heatsinks, basically they last 10 seconds and when runs out you just use another one
@@Citizen_Kate Thanks. And one more (and final) question... are all ships capable of cold-orbiting the Thargoid Interceptors?
Top thx!
ok. But seriously how though... You are sooo stable in FA off... is that mouse/kb?
I use a HOTAS, specifically the VKB Gladiator NXT stick and TCWS throttle, but at the AXI there are members that use everytihng from Keyboard + Mouse to Xbox Controller :)
It's all about practice and persistence - everyone is bad at FA OFF to begin with but in time it becomes second nature
Jesus this sounds hard.
Excellent video, more now that there thargoids are invading Earth, too bad you have retired from this game, your skills would be invaluable.
you using mouse and keyboard for that orbit manuver
There are terms and words i don't understand because i'm not a native so i had to visit dictionaries lol
I still don't understand what is lateral thrusting
oh well i can always use hit n run tactic if things goes sideways, at least until i get the hang of it
I wish this was easier with F/A on, I already struggle to aim with it on, much less with it off
Quality content o7
Hey absolutely brilliantly explained thank you! But I just noticed, you maybe tagged this under the hella wrong game?! 😅 Unless of course you're from the distant future where Star Citizen fully releases!
Hi, I'm from the future... Star Citizen is still not released 😬
now here's the million dollar question: how do you practice this without getting yoruself blown into a pile of space dust by thargoids
haha you dont :D you just accept that you are going to die a lot and always pick yourself up and get back out there when you do - but also so long as your ship is fast enough you can generally make an escape ;)
@@Citizen_Kate aaaah i feared you would say that. good thing my krait is cheap lol.
I can promise you though, that by learning to die gracefully you will learn how not to die ;) it can be a long road but very rewarding - the feeling when it all falls into place is really great
@@Citizen_Kate escaping? COWARDS! As a commander you go down with the ship and you swallow that rebuy with vinegar!

@@12345DJay Orbit around the nav beacon :) . just kidding.
This video makes me unreasonably upset that Elite still doesn't have a real velocity indicator on this 1000+ year of development advanced HUD.
