The topics we’ve covered of recent, are pretty serious, and you know, I like to be serious, I’m a serious, brooding person, I am the Batman of TH-cam, minus the excessive riches, just because the accent is rich, doesn’t mean the pockets are.
So I thought, you know what, we’ll do something more fun, something more upbeat, something that the child friendly twats at TH-cam would endorse, Tik Tok, I mean what serious comments can be made about that? It’ll get me rated E for every single little git who wants to click on my videos, yeah, I’m looking at you, little scallywag, you’re watching The Right Opinion now. Yeah, today we’re pulling out the stops to get Susan’s endorsement and talking about…
Susan I’m so sorry but I have a duty to serve, one day I’ll make content that will rival Jimmy Fallon in its inoffensiveness. And honestly, I really did preside over this topic for a while, really considering whether I should do it, TikTok is the peak of joke topics, that anyone should be doing, everyone’s been talking about it, but honestly I think there is a greater phenomenon that it can represent, and that is the art of child predation.
I’ll give a brief run down of Tik Tok for any boomers who are watching, I love you all the same, don’t worry, but all this new technology gets very confusing for you lads, and that’s understandable, it seems rather redundant to me as well, but there’s an audience. You know the old cliché where people grab the nearest microphone shaped ornament, a hairbrush, a toothbrush, you know, and they sing in the mirror. Well, it appears it’s not just some timely fad, it’s clear that there is some inner vanity that needs to be fulfilled, which is why these apps exist. They are basically a virtual mirror for you to lip sync your favourite music or weird quotes. And admittedly I am completely guilty of Snapchatting myself lip syncing desperately and sending it to my friends and probably confusing them greatly, the difference is I don’t put it out for the whole world to see.
Anyhow, basically, my point is, that TikTok is a platform that promotes this on a public basis, so that every 13 year old can post something thinking they’re being all hip, and then have it up there for the rest of their life, so when they go into some job interview they can have their arse torn apart by some manager who went googling their name and found a goldmine, and they’ll forever be known as TikTok Tim because their name is Tim and they did TikTok.
It was founded initially in 2016, but it didn’t start to pick up until a few months ago with the merger of one of its modern contemporaries: Musical.ly, which is another platform with a similar purpose. However, TikTok seems to be even more prevalent than Musical.ly in this current environment, and there are many reasons for why that appears to be, partly because of the absolute mammoth Chinese market, which is where it was originally launched in 2016, that has likely given it a lot of momentum, but also the additional features, that definitely make it more extensive than extensive than previous applications, as well as the fairly straightforward interface that does make creating the content for hyper annoying children nice and easy, which is what we like.
I may be an old man at the age of 21, but I must say, when I was a lad, around the young ages, I didn’t have many privileges of the internet, I lived in the middle of nowhere and the bandwidth wasn’t great, I remember a time when we used dial up. Back then we were witnessing a real movement. The creation of e-relationships, and I don’t mean romantic relationships, though they certainly fall into this category, but I’m talking about connections between people all over the world. The age of the internet truly is an exciting thing, with people being more interconnected than ever, it has created its own culture in a way. And as someone who has benefitted from that there is no way I can ever not praise it.
However, the online world has also brought many threats, and one of those that I want to talk about today, is that of predators. Predators, have always existed, they are nothing new, it’s just the internet gives them a new dynamic to play with, and that means that we have to all be more aware, and in all fairness, the educational system in the UK were very proactive in making sure that we, as children, weren’t roped into such rings, and although I didn’t think I would’ve ever done something like that, nor would my parents have let me, I still ended up in one of those situations. Admittedly, it wasn’t through the internet, I don’t think that would have happened, but I know there are many people in different environments who are susceptible to that, particularly when you may have a rocky real life relationship with those around you and some stranger online offers a better alternative.

Age limits definitely don't work; I just lied about my age for years. But yeah, a lot of these issues could be solved if two fronts took action: TikTok themselves and parents teaching their kids about actual internet safety in the current day. Not "don't talk to strangers online" because that doesn't work. Teach them about what the internet is for, explain that there are a lot of bad stuff, and they need to be careful because people can be "weird and mean"

One of the most troubling things for me is that it seems like kids on the internet today have just completely forgotten about the old "try to stay anonymous" mindset that schools taught us so adamantly when the internet was starting to rise in popularity. I see some of the videos that teenagers post on Tik Tok, with a lot of it being overtly sexually charged, and I just feel weird for even knowing they exist. It's created a very shady sort of allowance of these sort of things.
Yeah I don't know why it's socially acceptable for literal kids to sexualize themselves for popularity, it is so incredibly fucked up.

The problem is that these teachings are really outdated. These teenagers are anonymous. You might not know their names or addresses or anyway to find them easily in the way that predators of the past might have used. But with the challenges of tiktok and being able to interact with these teenagers differently predators can target children differently. For example, the man pretending to kiss the child. He can share those images and get off to them without being anywhere near that child. He can convince people to do things under the pretense of a challenge or take advantage of existing challenges.
Of course its taught that you should only interact with people you know irl but given that society is promoting the internet famous (who are typically in their early 20s) and many teenagers and children want to be internet famous why would they when they're seeking this viral attention.

It must be weird growing up in this environment. When I was 13 we had a dial-up internet and you could only use it on a regular computer. There was no social media as you know it and no smartphones. There was myspace, I guess. Technology has changed so rapidly in the past 2 decades it's insane.
Let it be known that everything that starts out 'just for children' is slowly but surely invaded by predators. They always seek out places where there are children and teens, whether it's real life or online.

No matter what age restrictions are put in place, people find a way around them. I first opened an online account when I was nine. It certainly changed my entire self, although I would like to say that I was not "corrupted." I was already knowledgeable on subjects considered inappropriate for my age, but it did open the door to darker topics.

furthermore, the internet and it's content is not eternal. there's a known phenomenon as internet decay, where something eventually gets old enough that people simply forget about it and as platforms die or change, content is removed and contributes to that decay.
it should also be said, that a lot of large companies such as google are becoming increasingly more pro active about giving people the ability to remove content pertaining to them and overall privacy of how content is distributed or shown publicly. the internet is still in it's infancy and a lot could happen in the next decade or two regarding the problems of today (including those problems outlined in this video).
My biggest concern with the comments here and within other videos is that they focus on his looks.

Obviously parents and school should be teaching this kind of behavior to the children, but I feel like even if they ramped that up, it wouldn’t change the status quo. As a young teen myself i often see this behavior from people who should know better but just don’t care. I don’t think anyone else is to blame than the children and maybe they will become aware of their cringe stuff when they look back in a few years.

i think one of the main reasons children are so vulnerable on the internet is because all the "tips" are mainly for parent and adults around them, who might be the reason they WANT to escape to a predator.

Another uncomfortable thing about TikTok which plays into the problem: if you look in the terms and conditions, you’ll notice that one section basically says that anything you upload, public or private, can be used by TikTok, with or without your permission. This means that anything you make can be used in ads, regardless of who you are. When random children or creepy old men are featured in advertisements, this can also draw people to their account. Also, it’s just weird and makes TikTok much less trustworthy.

that's a pretty standard ToS clause, and it's basically a requirement for them to be able to keep your videos on their servers, show them to other users and make thumbnails for them.

Thank you for making this video. I have noticed recently that a lot of adult, sexually charged content has made it to my For You Page. Often it's adults marketing their OnlyFans (no disrespect to the hustle, but remember that the app is marketed towards CHILDREN) or making sexual "meme type" video content. While I know that your For You Page is heavily curated to content the app thinks will appeal to you, I also think it's important to note that ANYTHING can end up on that page and the company is seemingly doing nothing to protect its extremely young audience. In my personal opinion, children shouldn't be using apps at all. Children are not mature enough, nor experienced enough to make smart choices online. I think that as the Internet Era continues to progress, children and especially young teens dealing with the struggles of puberty, become more at risk for predators online. Thank you again for this informative, well thought out video.

While you could call this a fix, its far from an easy one. Just about every kid has a phone, even if you don't give your child one their friend likely has one. You can monitor your child like a hawk but that wont stop them from doing things online, rather they'll just do it at school, a sleepover, or wherever else. The other problem with this is that most children would see the restrictions as MORE of a reason to do certain things on the internet, similar to the "don't touch the red button" situation where most only want to touch it more. Lastly, the signs of a predator aren't cookie cutter shapes, with the medium of the internet at hand a predator can hide as anyone, anywhere, at any time. As far as anyone knows, The Right Opinion himself could be some creep just building up followers to exploit later on. (That's an example, not a real situation)

Why can't they just make it so that adults over the age of 18 can't DM content creators under the age of 18? If they lie about their on the platform to DM kids, then at least them lying about their age suggests "intent" if they are caught. It would help any legal action against the predator if something happened.
