When people look back on TH-camrs, and ask themselves who have been the most influential creators on the platform, there are many individuals that I’m sure come to mind, people who are relevant now, and people who used to be relevant, whether it’s Pewdiepie, Smosh, Nigahiga, Shane Dawson, or Ray William Johnson, Fred, TheAnnoyingOrange and so on. Many creators past and present have had a significant cultural impact.
However, when speaking to people about their childhood, one name that seldom seems to come up, is Toby Turner, or Tobuscus, or TobyGames, despite the fact that I’m sure that a huge number of people have watched at least one video of his. Two of his channels have amassed over 6 million subscribers each which is certainly a feat not to be overlooked.
Yet I feel that his story is one that often is overlooked, one that is heavily integrated in the culture that we will discuss today, and one that we can perhaps learn a bit from, and maybe seek to explain, how everyone forgot about Toby Turner, hello ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to The Right Opinion, the home of a twat with too much free time, and bless your face.
I’m sure not everyone is aware of who Toby Turner is but for a basic rundown he is one of the original TH-camrs on the platform, who began his craft in 2006, and twelve years later is still going, as mentioned, it’s not to the intensity that he used to, after he probably made a fat stack of cash in his time, or at least enough to keep him going, I can’t look into a man’s bank account.
He ascended to his peak around the turn of the 2010s, particularly encompassed by the success of his Literal Trailer series, on top of this he also had a gaming channel, in which he would achieve even greater results in terms of subscribers, in spite of a marginally lower view count.
Generally if you ask someone involved with TH-cam what has been their most recent experience with him, chances are it’ll be the allegations, now at the time this was created in a Tumblr post by an individual named April Fletcher and this information isn’t wholly relevant right now, but I am going to bring it back up in the future for why it is important.
Turner had three succeeding channels, had made videos that are pretty much iconic in many people’s childhoods, and had so much media branching out in so many various directions he almost seemed set to succeed, rewatching a video in preparation by FootOfAFerret in which he runs down the brief history of our good friend Toby here, he says this.
So it does indeed beg the question, what happened? Even I’m not entirely sure yet, but by the end of the video, I’m sure we’ll have a definitive answer.
Turner is still uploading content to this day on his channel, mostly more commentary facecam oriented, and talking about various random topics that interest him, some topics more trending, others more spontaneous, or personal to him.
Given the fact that I don’t think there’s really too much else to summarise in this situation, which is a bit earlier than normal, we’re running ahead of schedule lads but I consider that a good thing, without further ado, I suggest we get right into it.

Every youtuber talking about Toby missed a HUGE detail. Toby was working on his game causing him to have little time and interest to his initial spark. He spent wayyyyyy too much time on it and i watched his channel die as he worked on it. Then it didnt do so well with sells and it wasnt working as expected. He got very very discouraged by this and i saw a change of character when this was going on. Then his projects delayed and got canceled. With constant inconsistencies views decreased and then after the allegations came to light which destroyed him more. The major change to his engagement was this game
I actually funded the game $135 and the tier had a huge list of things I would get and I sadly didn’t get anything. It was my birthday money so that absolutely sucked. Definitely was the downfall.

i think you hit the nail on the head. the allegations were basically the first glimpse his audience had into his personal life. it was always about the content, not his personality. and that worked perfectly for a while. youtube was escapist in nature. but over time, youtube has evolved, and with the oversaturation of the platform came a new admiration for the personality of a creator and what they could bring to the table that made them stand out from the crowd. i would go as far as saying that personality can sometimes matter more than actual content. hell, i'd watch a video of jenna marbles giving a "tour" of her plants and i'm obviously not alone. the difference is that toby was never able to form a meaningful connection to the audience beyond his comedy. i can't say whether or not i believe the allegations. but i can say, as much as it pains me, that i like toby as a comedian- not as a person.
Toby did have his defenders and pretty big ones. Philp Defranco and Jacklyn Glenn who personally said they don't think he's capable of raping someone, but it kinda was back handed because both of them admitted Toby had/has a drug problem and he's a serial cheater.

Such a shame that his career died the way it did. I remember when Pewdiepie was first coming up doing happy wheels and amnesia, he was in direct competition with Toby. Everyone at school was either team tobuscus or team pewdiepie. It's funny how differently they panned out. Felix had that over the top humour in his gaming, with the annoying voice and screams tied into the humour like Toby, and look how much he changed and grew. I feel like Toby's channel could have transitioned and been successful like Felix or maybe more similar to Jacksfilms. I mean damn, at the very least the literal trailers could have continued to be successful.

I feel bad for 2019 TRO thinking this is a long video, since he hadn't made the Nikocado Avocado one yet.
Tobuscus is so bittersweet to me. He was not only a staple part of my childhood, but a staple part in the platform. I think time hasn't been kind to Toby, but that's what happens. You touched on it a bit already, but I don't believe this is completely a case for Toby not being able to be adapt, rather, his kind of humor just isn't "in" anymore. He has a very unique style to him that I can't describe, and for that reason, he'll be remembered as an old-school TH-camr who helped define the platform. It's possible that he could pull a Shane Dawson and roll something out that makes him very relevant again, but it's likely that his peak is over. It's sad seeing a part of your childhood die in a way, and die as a whisper, instead of a bang.

To me, Toby Turner feels like a relic of an of YT long since past. Creative, gaming-minded content where cringe and excessive personality traits were celebrated. His controversies pushed him away from the public eye, but subsequently YT changed anyway, and his brand of entertainment was no longer favoured by YT. We've all seen it lately: sanitised, 'advertiser friendly' content that appeals to the lowest common denominator is what is favoured now. Toby was one of the biggest creators before the 'influencer' phase that we're in now. While I never particularly enjoyed his content, it's interesting to see how things have changed.
Dude bnever cursed or atleast bleep it when he did. He is is actually more ad-friendly than anyone I have subbed for the past decades to be honest, which sucks how this controversy ended his career basically.
I loved his channel so much because of the simplicity and charm of a guy making corny jokes while digging for diamonds on minecraft. It just worked so well for him even though on paper it sounds terrible.
Apart from all the said reasons that pretty much prove he was one of the first "influencers" in TH-cam, today we still got TH-camrs that thrive outside of that box, such as Uberhaxornova.

From knowing Toby since 07 I can say Phil's description is pretty spot on. I miss the toby I knew but his popularity changed him. Also knew too many girls with odd sexual toby interactions. None of which ended in assault btw. Just aggressive.

Sexual Assault allegations are very complicated and difficult to work through.
In the event that they happen, the victim is often traumatized.
By the time they end up reporting it and collecting forensic evidence, the evidence has gone cold and is no longer suitable for a case.
The suspect is never charged, and goes on to do it again until the stars align to have him charged.
There are also cases where the incident never occurred, as later admitted by the "victim". In these cases, there sometimes is forensic evidence.
The "victim" and "suspect" go through the whole process just to find that the claim was not all together accurate.
It's very frustrating for Law Enforcement and the victims when the evidence goes cold for legitimate cases, and when time and resources are wasted on illegitimate ones.
Of course you can never tell 100% which are legitimate and which are not. Unless you were there, you can't say for certain.
Then we get into these allegations, where people take it upon themselves to prove the assault without any evidence other than overwhelming word alone.
These ones do a few things. They ruin the "suspect's" reputation. If it comes out later that the allegation is false, it's too late. The damage has already been done.
If the allegation is true, it brings into question why the case is seeing "justice" through slandering and volume of statements instead of Law Enforcement.
In conclusion, you never know if a claim is 100% true or not. In most cases, there is some truth to it. Don't disregard the victim's or suspect's statement entirely.
Know that something did happen, and both parties have come to believe their side of things.
In her case, it's hard to believe. Honestly, she says she's so "F'ed up from this drug that she didn't get out of bed for three days," yet shows up at a party with her alleged attacker?! Yeah, she lied.

The only reason why Toby's channel is still in poor standing is because schmucks like you never take the time to think critically from both sides of what even legal avenues have been pursued. It's dead because he stopped making content on any kind of regular basis at first and has all but stopped even more recently. He did this because, as he has said himself and as Phil said in the quote in this very video, he is a very emotional person and the allegations really emotionally affected him. He loves his audience, actually loves them. Further, he loves them because they love him. Because of that, when his audience turned on him, it crushed him. So, he just doesn't have the desire to put himself out there anymore because he is afraid of the hate which, unfortunately, he will now never escape. In the end, it's really sad because his channel is dead because, for all his faults... he loves too much.

Toby Turner is not a believable narrator, and this video glosses over a very important discrepancy. When the allegations came out against him, he initially claimed that the claims of abuse were false and that everything he and his gf did was consensual. Later in his career he made a different response in which he claimed they never even dated. He went from "my gf and I did consensual stuff" to "we never dated". This is something that gets glossed over a lot. Be better people, don't defend abusers

I really hate this way of viewing things. While yes it is true, having your point of view of the victims are the ones really hurt and not the falsely accused is the reason why false acusations keep popping up. The people that do it know that they are far more likely to be believed and even then the falsely accused gets no sympathy for their lives being destroyed and relationships ruined. I appreciate how well thought out and educated your videos are. It's very clear you have done the research and know how to be unbias as you form your final opinion which is always based off facts. The fact that you have such an intelligent and varied vocabulary is wonderful. You don't talk down to the audience but you're always sure to put the definition of the words you use so people can learn them instead of feeling dumb for not knowing them. I appreciate the class and snark that you bring to your criticisms but you don't at all present your opinion as the ONLY opinion. you leave it open to the viewer while making sure you state your own opinion and that it's just that. This is easily one of the best shows on youtube that looks into other youtubers. Most of the others feel like tabloid drama mongering, but you feel like you're doing something fresh. you're actually doing character studies and everything is well thought out. Toby seemingly burned a lot of bridges with people, and I don't think Shane could fix that.

i listen to this while i do my homework, and its so relaxing. its like being in class, but with a teacher and topic i really enjoy and want to learn about.
I think people need to understand that we never knew Toby outside of TH-cam. We saw him as this goofy guy who did funny voices, played our favorite games, and made funny videos with his dog. He made us laugh when we were kids, and we loved him for it. I can understand how hard it is to see allegations like this made against someone we held so near and dear to our hearts, but people often choose sides based in the TH-cam persona we see.
I am in no way saying Toby did was he was accused of, nor am I saying he didn’t. It becomes obvious as a now adult that Toby has issues. The person we saw on camera was completely different in real life. He struggled (and probably still does) with a drug addiction as well as mental health issues. I see so many people saying, “there are two sides to every story” which is absolutely false. There are THREE sides to every story- his, hers, and the truth. We do not know what happened and we cannot make assumptions of what happened as we weren’t there, nor do we know the off camera personalities of these youtubers. I think everyone needs to keep an open mind in these situations because it’s very serious. When allegations come out, someone always gets hurt- whether it be someone who WAS raped or someone who was accused.

I think that 7th Grade (8 years ago) is when I really fell in love with Tobuscus' content and with the, what I believe are false alligations due to her never taking it to court and doing this as a power move to ruin toby after a failed relationship has caused him so much struggle. But it's an undeniable fact that it does happen, some men are POS, but if we went off the traditional burden of proof then almost no one that is guilty would be found guilty, which isnt fair for the victims. And I think you're drastically oversimplifying it by saying the the accused are guilty until proven innocent.
On another note; innocent until proven guilty only really applies to legal proceedings, in the public arena anything is fair game. You can have your life destroyed simply by making a social faux pas, and people will make up their own minds regardless of the proof there may or may not be.

People seem to think that it was just one rape allegation that ruined his career but id argue that it was the multiple people clarifying his heavy drug use that was one of his main downfalls. People seem to forget that Toby was heavily marketed towards kids and early teens. He was on the Annoying orange show on cartoon network, he had a range of children's toys and was always invited to host gaming panels with the audience filled with kids . The amount of jobs and revenue he lost because of his drug use was huge because Tobys sweet child friendly image was now gone and company's wasn't going to risk having Toby as the face for anything they're selling towards kids.
And while the rape allegation could be seen as false to a lot of people. What did seem to be true was that a number of girls (even the ones sticking up for Toby) mentioning that while he wasn't physically abusive, they found him emotionally abusive in relationships mainly due to Tobys personal issues. This is what for me personally put me off Toby.
What was more telling for me during all of this was the lack of people sticking up for Toby, it was almost as if they couldnt because a lot of what was mentioned was true. Or maybe the fame had completely gone to Tobys head and he started treating people around him badly, so they didnt want to help try to clear his name.
TL:DR Toby wanted to be Mr. Rogers/Bob Ross/Jim Henson but behind the scenes he was Charlie Sheen
all the drug stuff was true, without a doubt. while rape is obviously bad, like tro said, rapists and sexual abusers often still keep an audience even when they’ve been convicted for their crimes. eg. tekashi69 still has fans. that’s something that makes me lose faith in humanity, but again, whether or not toby truly did do it (none of us will know for sure), it probably won’t make him lose his career.

Okay anyone else notice that the audio is way off? I noticed it last first when the cute win fail graphics were up but he was still talking about Harry Potter, and then after the graphics were done suddenly Tobys voice chimes in saying the things that WOULD of matched up with those graphics. This was obvious again when the nugget in a biscuit song graphics played with a different audio, then about a minute and a half later the song starts playing. I tried the video on my phone, tv and then had my husband try it on his account to see if it was just me, but all three methods had the audio not line up with what was on the screen. Is this happening to anyone else? Am I going crazy over here?

I loved watching him when I was a kid, so I really hoped he was innocent too... but the truth is we don’t know him irl so we don’t really know what he’s capable of. And based on what people who actually know him in real life (like his friends) have said apparently he had problems with drugs and he was behaving very inappropriately towards women at parties..... so he doesn’t seem to be as “good” of a person as we thought either unfortunately...

I’m talking about how some of his (male) friends have mentioned that Toby has struggled with drugs before, and about an incident when Toby was at a friend’s house party and his friend (who is also a guy btw) eventually had to ask Toby to leave, because he was behaving very inappropriately towards some of the women there. I’m not saying he is automatically guilty of committing any actual crimes of course, I’m just saying based on what several of Toby’s friends have personally witnessed, there‘s a strong possibility that Toby is not as innocent/blameless/wholesome as we had previously thought...
