    The no HUD thing for immersion is cool, but what they really need is an AI pit team on the radio. Telling you timing gaps, crashes, penalties, good and bad sectors, and doing fuel and tire math for you. THAT would be killer. Realistically it wouldn't really need AI, but it would be cool to give the people on radio some personality

    As someone who has been doing VR in iRacing since November:
    The change will take some races, you will be slower those races. But once you start to adapt and see it as if you are in an actual car, you will actually not only become MUCH faster, but will also have way better racecraft, which is the main game from switching to VR.

    • @vertvlogs675
      @vertvlogs675 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Sounds like switching from a controller to a wheel. I know in certain games I am still faster with a controller, but even if I can bang out a faster qualifying with a controller. I feel much more confident when I'm using a wheel for wheel-to-wheel racing.

    Obviously I am no where near as fast as you, Steve. But having used VR lot more than you, mainly on AC and ACC, I can tell you are not used to the cockpit view. You need to turn your head more, and use the right wing mirror to check cars at the back. There is a massive blind spot at the moment because you are relying the centre mirror only. And like you said, racing is way more realistic on VR and you will be quicker once tuned in. I was 10 seconds quick in Nordschleife 3rd lap into VR from flat screen. VR and flat screen is 2 different league. You will be way quicker. Well done and keep pushing.

  • @TehAlekzi
    @TehAlekzi ปีที่แล้ว +7

    It's pretty cool to see how the game handles rendering in VR, I was a bit curious after the last video and on this one I paid attention how the headset tracks where you look and how the game renders after receiving that data. It's really visible on the rearview mirror, it's all blurry and not anti-aliased when you're looking straight and on an instant when taking a quick gander at it, its all smooth and crispy.
    I'm not a VR user myself nor watch VR gameplay usually, so its pretty cool piece of tech to figure out how that all works.

    When you're really tuned into how you play a game, any significant change will make you initially slower. If you became a wizard at racing on a DualSense and got a wheel without much experience racing with one, I think you'd initially be slower, too.
    It's about the potential the new input/ouput method gives you. I found I started going quicker in VR once I really got comfortable with it, mainly down to being able to feel better what the car was doing.
    I'd love to see more VR content to see if you can find all your speed in this mode, and maybe even find something else, too.
    It would also be awesome to do a big online no HUD race challenge, so even tyre wear is something you have to gauge entirely by feel. It would be a really cool challenge to watch!

      How do you find the graphics quality?

    • @sawdust8691
      @sawdust8691 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jean-Guy Malenfant don't expect it to look as good as a TV.
      It's pretty blurry compared to a 4K TV, with a grainy look due to the mura effect from the pixels not all shining at the exact same intensity, because it's an OLED screen your zoomed in on. And you only see 2K maximum.
      So, as one should expect, visual quality is not as good as a TV. Don't expect it to look nearly as sharp.
      The graphics quality is great though. It's pretty much the same graphical fidelity as on flat screen. But just shown on a lower resolution screen.

    @super Gt thanks for the answers about "Is VR slower". I daresay, it *seemed* like your pulse was pounding much harder in the key moments of these VR races than compared to your usual flat game experience. And that *thrill* surely is worth something. But at the end of the day, because VR is slower AND VR is more exhausting, does it mean you will ultimately feel compelled to go back to flat gaming to be competitive and run more races per day? Do you think the rank table display really makes that much of a difference for driving strategy? or do you think its because you are stuck to incar view and you cant see cars that are creeping up on your side? What if anything do you think would need to change in GT to make VR be competitive with flat (albeit with more exhaustion from the experience in trade)? Could you consider doing a VR race and then taking off the headset and doing the same race in flat and then summarize your impressions from a "competitive racing" position? Finally, Do you think VR will make you a better real world racer? Thanks

    It's funny how for Steve the depth of the corner was a thing he struggled with in VR compared to flatscreen.
    I started simracing around 2 years ago, 4 months ago I bought myself a quest 2. And better judgement of distance and speed is the best thing that happened to me due to switching to VR. I can finally judge the speed, distance and angle accurately, making it possible for me to be faster and actually drive safer. On flatscreen it's very difficult for me to stay fully aware and judge my speed going into corners. I was finally able to go around stages in Dirt Rally 2.0 reliably after switching to vr.
    So yeah, not discrediting anyone's experience or anything, it's just interesting to me how it seems it's drastically different from one person to another.

I also listen to the surroundings so you'll later learn how to tell where they are by the sound.

    Obviously I don't know how difficult it would be, but it would be nice if they could add something like they have in the EA/Codemaster games like Grid or F1 where you can get updates over your radio from your engineer in the pits. Obviously its tougher as the left/right direction buttons are assigned to the onscreen menu, but am sure Polyphony could come up with something. Hell, if not interative, just the odd radio message that comes out through the controller speaker would be fine.

    Absoutely excellent real review! yes there are differances like the times on the left but like you said @Super GT that is more realistic and you have to drive more on instinct rather than data on the screen, like the real world. For me I found the depth in VR easier to judge corners, with my second lap on race B I shaved a second off my best time.
    I love it. Keep up the great content! Thanks.

    I think this is the future of sim racing. Of course GT7 isn't the first VR sim, but it is the first that offers such a high quality experience priced for the mass market -- and the gameplay footage is SO much more engaging.

    With VR on the rise, GT need to invest in audio feedback.
    For example pit crew voices to provide feedback on if cars are left, right, delta of those around you and when cars come within 1second of you, and when car x&y in the pits.
    You should be able to adjust how chatty you want them too.
    Else it seems quite unstable with the lack of feedback and for you to go no HUD.

    Lots of fun to watch. It's a little bouncy compared to screen views because of your head movement. I suggest moving the insets of your body and feet to the upper left or right so our view of the side mirror is not blocked.

      @@thekornrole As someone who has been doing VR for a while now in iRacing and does track days: yes, it absolutely does.
      It's essentially practice, it makes sim racing so similar to the real thing that it eventually serves as practice.

    • @dylanzrim3635
      @dylanzrim3635 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thekornroleeven without VR I have avoided crashes IRL that previous to simracing I would have rammed right through. It’s at the point now where sim racing is like getting into a fresh car. It’s the same but it’s not, all the core elements remain you just have to do them differently, sim racing also gives you thousands of different cars to drive, training your brain to know what things will be different and how to combat the issue even without having driven the car yet.
      Then there’s the IRL to sim similarities in setups, softer suspension will yield moderately better grip, but the grip goes byebye the moment everything bottoms out, it’s the same in my 31 year old 4wd as it is in a simulated F1 car as it is in pcars2 when the glitches stay away.
      Some companies have even integrated simulator rig gear into a real car for testing. Even if that never directly makes It to market, the trickle down into current tech fly by wire steering will turn it from a return to centre with maybe some feedback but mostly signal drop aways to actually safe. And improve how the FFB generates within their own hardware for simulation use.

    • @thekornrole
      @thekornrole ปีที่แล้ว

      I could see how it would benefit someone who never ever drove a car and someone who wants to learn a track layout but feeling the gforce as the bumps and your tire grip is a whole nother thing. But I guess there could be a learning effect.

  • @MySpartan94
    @MySpartan94 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think the only downside to VR for GT7 is that you dont really have full view angle like you do irl. If we did have curved screens that can mimic our view angle, then using our head to turn away while having our eyes look the otherway and it would allow us to use the mirrors

    in iRacing I have the virtual mirror just above my eye line. VR reduces the benefit of peripheral vision so the simulator really needs to provide some feature to compensate. Situational awareness in a car is required. The radar off to the side and even the mirror is just not somewhere you can readily see while you're looking where you're driving.
