Love the weekly how to win at chess on Sundays. I know he mentioned the views are less, but this is some of my favorite content from him. I watch this series on repeat.
Happens all the time. When he is certain he plays a machine in a format like rapid 5 minutes, he has won several games by playing so defensively that the machine loses on time. Quite a feat, really!
400 elo chess is full of blunders. to become 800 elo all you have to do is focus on not giving away pieces for free. let your opponent make the mistakes and punish them.
Gotham, i come here in my grandma's account to thank you for my whole evolution at chess. I began studying it at 2022, being a 800 who just playes casually. Now i'm 2000 and can finally say: i did it sir
The C4 trick for whites benefit was obvious that the next move was a pawn push with a discovered check , winning the Queen. I’m close to 1500 and I saw that move in half a second. However, seeing why C4 immediately lost the game for white, wasn’t obvious. The only winning move for black is the move Levy played. Black gets like a +4 advantage and just wins the game at Levy’s level. If not, white wins the black queen on the next move.. just completely winning the game on their end.
Great stuff again. I appreciate how you don't edit out games you're not happy with. Also, with regards to the theme of the series, the games show how to win, even if on occasion it's your opponent, or when the position gets to the point where one should see a draw as a win. As much as those may hurt, they are instructive; maybe sometimes even more as you can explain what you were thinking, and what you missed, when the game goes awry! It's all part of the plan after all. :)
I played my first tournament at the age of 10 when I was 800 elo, I had a 7 year old as my duo, His score was 5-0 and mine was 2-3. He demolished the entire tournament. After that I quit chess for 3 years and came back after watching your videos and now I now have a rating of 1500(I am 14.5 years old). Thank you for always uploading free videos! I am now in high school and can't play much chess because of studies but the journey of my improvement in chess with you will always remain in my heart!!
Not too long ago I remember hearing some refer to Levy as "GM candidate" instead of 'IM'. The way he is announcing this game makes me think he is pursuing a GM title! He definitely deserves it in my eyes! Even if he doesn't get the norm in traditional ways... his understanding of Elo is unique AND warranted! Plus I rather hear Levy commentate a chess game over Yasser Seirawan! With ALL RESPECT TO YASSER!!! I want to see the popularity of chess progress! Levy isn't Magnus or Hikaru or Danya OR Kramnik! Levy is the hero of chess we need right now! GO GM Levy Rozman!!!
@ 1:34:48 I understand it would be great to take black's white square bishop, but why not exchange it for knight, instead of Levy's excellent light squared bishop?
36:52 Qh7+ is completely winning for black. Not sure if anyone else has said it already, just thought I would since Levy didn’t see it. Engine actually says it’s Mate in 10.
my fav series! this one was super informative for the lower level players that have those blunders and misses majority of their games :D thank you for keeping that in and showing how to recover/hold a position
Very good idea 💡 to start with the best players. I wonder why you didn't think of that earlier. Its obviously the way to go. Please don't stop making this series. It's the only series I religiously watch.
1300 aren't as dumb (Bad) as you think Levy! tactic at 27:03 wasn't too crazy, especially for 1500. I think tactically, 1200-1500 are 'strong' (least for their level). Positional play is what's difficult. My tactic rating is like 2100
At 1:39:31 I think your opponent had a nice idea to play pawn takes knight f6 and after QxQb3, the opponent can play pawn f7 threatening Rh3 mate. You would still be winning but you would have to sac your bishop on f6 to allow whites king to escape to g7( if RxBf6 then white can play Re1+ leading to mate. If PxRe8 then white can take back with rook and be up the exchange). Good luck on becoming GM levy!
Levy you’re still a truly wonderful coach. Would love to see some more common openings, like just play the open Sicilian instead of a3. Titled players never want to get into a theory battle with lower ranked but those are the lines we the viewers see and play so much and would be helpful. A bit more E4 E5 to see all the Italian and Spanish and scotch lines. Thank you for what you do.
At 37:02 I think there is a forcing line to win a rook with the Qa2+, which doesn’t take too long to calculate. I might be wrong, but it seems like the king can be pushed away from protecting the rook, which in few moves would be taken at e2 by the queen. I gotta run the engine to check that
Yup, I was right, the Qa2+ move here is the winner. The line actually is even more brutal with the checkmate being delivered: 34... Qa2+ 35. Re2 Rf3+ 36. Ke1 Qa1+ 37. Kd2 Rd3+ 38. Kc2 Qa2+ 39. Qb2 Qc4+ 40. Kb1 Rd1+ 41. Qc1 Rxc1+ 42. Kb2 QC3+ 43. Ka2 Ra1# Still, Levy showed an instructive trade that leads to a winning endgame. I like how Levy takes my mind for a walk through the chess landscape when he plays these games, nothing stressful, it's all a learning developmental experience
33:44 I’m still new in chess, but why wouldn’t you want to fork the queen and rook? Wouldn’t it put pressure on the queen making it move away and then you’d be able to take rook with pawn.
This series is really helpful. I have not really played a lot of games, but the mid-game ideas really help me a lot (although I still fall into traps like being forked etc lol)
I like how you opted taking the knight going a piece up and just going about winning the game after that a good game by your opponent but a way better game by you especially the endgame Grabbing that passed pawn after threatening checkmate with your rook and knight that worked out so Great
"only for today" "how to get better at chess forever" "bad. bad. bad. bad. bad." That's a lot of titles and I don't understand the thought process but Levy has 2 billion times more subscribers and videos than me so pop off, king.
I don't really understand the benefit of Gotham playing suboptimally, because "that's what an amateur player would do". I'd much rather see him playing the best moves and explain them. Just my opinion
27:30 if you would’ve taken the pawn at b4 you lock down either two rooks or a queen and a rook. I think it’s a good move because it applies pressure and usually that leads to poor decisions.
Love watching you play and explain everything... i kniw how to play chess, though I'm not great and continue to imcrease my knowledge to become better. You make this look so easy.
I gotta say, the draw with the 2200 was well thought out, I had a similar situation with my last game where it was just luck and felt the same way you did there. Hurt my eyes haha. We learnin XD
StarrPlatinum is excellent player (19:38 - 43:03). That stale mate possibility was ingenious. But these are the draw-backs of rapid play. You don't have time to see such moves.
Your queen was trapped at the 1:13:00 mark. Your opponent needed to play Knight to A5. It's a trap that Alex Banzea showed us. Edit: oh cool, you saw it in the review.
36:44 was there not dxc6+ ? After king moves pawn takes again and after rook takes queen rook takes yours one square from promotion with no way to stop it?

That was scary for a moment that discovered check that could’ve made you lose your Queen if you hadn’t seen it I’ve done that to opponents before it’s the kind of thing you definitely have to be aware of
That was a great episode Levy thanks ! I really enjoyed when you explained the finishing skills with the 2 queens. I think you could make a whole video on chess finishing skills especially for blitz. Sure people can teach you openings and tactics and strategies and matting patterns and pawn play, but finishing skills, that's what wins games especially blitz and bullet games. I forget some of these finishing techniques especially in low time. I cant seem to think of many chess content out there on finishing skills... sure knight and bishop but there's a whole lot more finishing skills out there. How well do you know them all ? I like how the 1100 player is playing the Benko gambit one of the hardest openings to learn and master
Agreed.. it's complex yet he did his best..
that is, in the long run, probably going to pay off for him
Levy is giving the "only for you my friend" Vibe from the course disounts
Cool it with the anti semitism.

there's one instance of someone cheating against levy in how to win at chess, it was a 2000 elo who later got banned, and lost to time against levy
It's happened. Also on his rating climbs
There’s one episode where a 900 plays better than all of his other opponents. Sketchy play
"lowest elo of around 1100-1200" ... me watching this as a 400 elo :(

do quizzes, learn the basics of an opening and basic tactics (pins, skewers, forks, discovered attacks) and play longer (15 min+) games

The series was about Levy having hard times vs low rated players and man, he had it and man, we had fun.
I'm like 90% sure that the 1500 had no idea that c4 had any tricks, and about 75% sure that the 1700 didn't see the trick after h5
The C4 trick for whites benefit was obvious that the next move was a pawn push with a discovered check , winning the Queen. I’m close to 1500 and I saw that move in half a second.
