Netflix’s major problem is canceling amazing shows in the first season because they didn’t do enough press to get good numbers on the release day. So once the show is actually discovered and everyone loves it, it will have already been canceled

So, my personal issues with Netflix are:
    - there's no way to see what the latest releases are, just a selection of newish releases and trending shows
    - it feels like it's 95% cheap filler movies
    - show/film descriptions often say nothing about what it's about
    - show/film trailers are mostly a clip that tells you nothing about the show and are mostly boring and unengaging
    - it doesn't show you what you've already watched
    - the price is way more than other services, and those services offer shows and films that aren't mostly filler... and the price keeps increasing
    - it does a very poor job with shows it thinks I will like

@@zoinksrodan7644 Today, there was a show called "Life in Colour" added to Netflix, which I know about through a site that tracks new releases. This doesn't appear anywhere in the new releases list on Netflix, but content that is nearly a week old appears there. I get the same with many other films and shows.
Going to a specific list to see what I've watched is not very helpful. If I'm browsing the list, and I see a film that I'm not sure I've watched previously, it won't tell me. It will display it like any other film. I would want it to have a red underline, or border, or an icon showing that it's been watched previously. I don't want to navigate away to search for it in a list of things I've watched. That's next to useless as I wouldn't waste all that time to find out.

i also think netflix is focusing too much on “shock value” shows. shows like their awful reality shows (ex. too hot to handle) and movies like 365 days and tall girl. yes, they give you a momentary check when it blows up on tiktok and everyone hate watches it, but it doesn’t build fans. people talk about it for a week after it comes out, make fun of it, and go on with their day. meanwhile, stranger things (a show that’s actually well written and planned out) is still incredibly relevant years after it’s first season. shows like i’m not okay with this got cancelled, but are still highly praised online with a core fanbase begging for a revival. that’s what netflix is forgetting. they want to make a quick dollar off of a terrible movie or show, but forget that clout fades in a month or so.

100%. Also it's 2022. I have a Japanese penpal and we like to watch shows together online. Why is this different from having a friend over to watch with me? Obviously public restreaming is a problem, but at the end of the day these online services need to start understanding that by virtue of being online, there are going to a lot of grey areas that people feel are not in any way infringements but obviously legally would be.
This is the same problem as video game piracy, in a way. In attempting to crack down on leeches you end up pissing off legitimate customers and will inevitably end up hurting your userbase long term when the value proposition of the service becomes less attractive.

One prime example is Arcane. This masterpiece of a show released 3 episodes each week for 3 weeks. The show exploded and maintained popularity throughout those 3 weeks because of its release style. In my opinion, releasing 1 episode a week for a show on Netflix would be weird because binge watching has become a central part of Netflix culture. I would suggest them maybe releasing 2 or 3 episodes a week for a show like what they have been doing with their reality TV shows. It will keep the binge aspect that Netflix is associated with while extending it over a few weeks.

    • @coolboss999
      @coolboss999 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

@@TekkenMasterPL Also cable shows like Better Call Saul, they usually don't record all the episodes at once, they usually make them in batches which is why they can't just dump all the episodes at once and their are usual breaks in between (holidays/breaks. With this model, actors also have time to work on multiple projects at once without having to be stuck on one for a prolonged period of time). With streamers, they make all their episodes at once so they can do whatever they want with the release schedule and not have to deal with it. Netflix chooses to dump everything while streamers like Hulu and Disney+ like doing weekly drops. Also, Netflix doesn't own Better Call Saul. It's licensed to them and when the show is finished releasing all of it's episodes on cable, it's usually takes a few weeks for it to be put on Netflix (depending on the licensing agreement, it can vary when the show drops on Netflix ofc).

    - They only advertise things that are already popular, so the only thing I see when I open the app is just Stranger Things and Breaking bad.
    - The app's algorithm is like it was made in 5 minutes. It recommends me the show Lost In Space when I watch stuff like Naruto and HxH.
    - the descriptions don't tell much about the show/movie's plot.
    - A lot of the Movies are just there to make it look like there is a whole lot more to watch, they are poorly made.

      - 3 of your 4 issues sentences start with T, also why does the third reason start with a lowercase T when the other 4 points you made started with capitals
      - About the 4th issue, that is entirely subjective, yes I think some movies are bad, but usually that is because I don't like an actor/s, or I don't like the plot or something else, very rarely is a movie bad because of the writing/production quality, yes there are bad ones, but I am pretty sure they exist on any platform, if you dig deep enough.

MatPat really does have a point about the bingeing and release schedule thing. As someone who watches dramas that release episodes on a weekly basis, there’s time for us to react and anticipate each episode. It gives us something to look forward to. If people want to binge a drama, they will simply wait until the week or day of the final episode to do so. Following a weekly release schedule will still give people the opportunity to binge a show, while also letting it last longer.

    • @coachleif
      @coachleif 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

I think it's highly individual. A show has to be exceptional for me to bother with watching weekly, and even then I would prefer to binge it. The only two shows I have bothered watching weekly were ones I got into by binging first, Succession and Better Call Saul. In both cases, I waited for multiple seasons to come out before committing, and only once I was hooked would I have bothered coming back weekly. In both cases too, I enjoyed the era where I could binge quite a bit more, but I was in deep enough I would watch weekly. Also in both cases, I haven't watched a weekly show since, and the only way to get me to commit to that is have a body of work for me to actually get into.
For example, Better Call Saul is still my fav show... but it's a slow starter, it worked in it's advantage to string that together a little bit more, whereas I may have gotten lost over the course of 5 seasons before it hit me I was enjoying it even more than Breaking Bad.
This isn't one size fits all... but every weekly show I ever watch anymore is only a result that I binged several seasons of it already.

The real issue with Netflix is that whenever they release a show, it's overwhelming because you have to watch all of it (if you like the show) to avoid being spoiled online or with friends. Like you said, a big reason why Disney Plus works in that regard is because they release episodes on a weekly basis. what people forget is water cooler conversations only happen around exceptionally good shows that appeal to a broad demographic. the vast majority of shows do not fall into this bucket.
statistically most shows are fairly good/average/fairly bad. for these shows, many viewers become bored or distracted during a week hiatus and progressively drop off. but if the next episode/next season is only an autoplay away, viewers don't have time to get bored/forgetful and keep watching - netflix keeps the eyeballs.
think about it like Amazon. sure there are some things I would wait a week for, but I purchase ten times as many things that I prefer to get the same day/next day. netflix is the same. sure there are some viewers who don't care about waiting - but ten times as many viewers will shell out cash to view what they want, when they want it.

i think a major gain for companies when releasing episodes weekly:
disney+ marvel shows are typically 6 episodes, with one releasing every week for 6 weeks. this means that if you want to watch them as they come out, you will have to renew your subscription once meaning you have to pay for 2 months as opposed to 1. just a little way they get audiences to spend more money, while having time to theorize and discuss a show, keeping it relevant for far longer.

Exactly, releasing once a week means you need to stay subscribed to tune in. If you dump all 16 episodes at once of a season at once you may only get a few weeks with eyeballs on it and someone may just subscribe that month when the drop happens. Do it every week you get a bare minimum of 4 months of revenue and a lot more interest over a longer period of time.

Paramount has released Star Trek series (usually 10-12 episodes) where there is at least 1 week of overlap between the shows for the same reason. 5 series (which they have) means they have about a years worth of content that stays pretty fresh and changes (every show has a different setting/feel, one 2D, are animated and one 3D). The overlap means more people will check out "that other new Star Trek" because they pay for the week anyways, regardless of when their particular "month" ends.
Their still weird in some places with what feels more overlap then is needed, but overall it's been a really successful strategy. After all you don't make 4 spin offs that expensive for a show that's failing

The intrigue is really powerful tool to get someone into the show whether it is criticism or praise imo. Also, it lets the audience grow more as each episode releases. Binging is great if you're late to the party imo, but if it's newly released some people can decide to watch it later, which scatters the watch time or popularity of the show. Unlike with one episode (two or three epsiode is ideal imo for more discussions) the show can be popular for weeks. In addition, watching something on it's release feels exclusive, where everyone actually gathers around to watch the show simultaneosly, where excitement is high imo.

I think you forgot one huge factor: people have to go off-site to get vibe checks about content. They removed the review system, which means that people are constantly driven _away_ from the site if they want to share their opinion or see what other people think. Sure, die-hard fans will always form communities on Discord or Reddit, and TH-cam videos will get made, but being unable to interact then and there is a really big deal.
I observe this in how I interact with TH-cam. If I ever look up clips of "made for children" content, I find myself actively avoiding the official videos because the lack of comments means that there's no one to reminisce with, no conversation, nothing.
It's not limited to Netflix either. CollegeHumor's streaming service Dropout also doesn't host comments on their videos. There's a Discord server, and people talk about videos shortly after release, but it makes it challenging to join the conversation later because the moment has passed. To a different extent, Reddit also has this problem because new comments are disabled after a few months, so reposts are actually necessary in order to allow new people to engage. TH-cam, on the other hand, has videos that are over a decade old and still get new comments. Sure, I wish comment threads were better, and you weren't constantly notified as "replied to" when someone else is actually getting a response on the thread, and I miss being able to open comment sections in their own pages and browse that way...
Point being that TH-cam has a really good comments section for letting people engage with the content on-platform, long after it was posted, with suggested content in-sight the whole time.

    • @DrNaviMD
      @DrNaviMD 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

It isn't even a small factor, Netflix doesn't need written reviews in the app at all, like you said, people who care about that (like you and I) can get the same experience out of theory videos here on TH-cam, or reddit/discord communities.
Also most of Netflix's userbase watch it on TV or their phones where going to a comment section or review section would be a waste of time.

I imagine some of Netflix's downward spiral could also be attributed to the loss of third-party licenses. Specifically, all the Marvel shows that recently moved over to Disney+ under the new label of "The Defenders Saga." Sure, they were canceled back in 2018 and 2019, but that was due to a substantial loss in revenue as interest in the individual shows started to wane. I imagine they planned the franchise to be their version of the Avengers but couldn't quite reach that level of popularity. Now, with the IPs no longer on their platform, they have a significant gap between viewers who are superhero fans. I remember hearing back in 2018 that Netflix acquired the rights to do a reboot of "The Chronicles of Narnia." However, they've done nothing with it. They've been sitting on the books for almost five years. Granted, a pandemic has slowed down a lot of their original work, but they have yet to make an update on the franchise.

I really liked how Arcane had episodes which would come out in threes. I think going forward that should be what every Netflix show should do because you can still "binge" three episodes while also waiting for the rest of the series to come out weekly. Maybe shows should even come out in two episodes per week. Both would work well in my opinion.

Big companies should always have their eye open when MatPat makes a video on them. Time and time again Mat predicts financial problems/wins for them and how they could improve as a platform, but they never listen. Really cheering for them to finally see how important and valuable these videos are. Then we could have better platforms/shows, they'd get more money, and the Theorist Team gets more wins to check off.

Y'know, I can speak to that last point myself personally. When the second season of Beastars released, my partner and I binged the entirety of the season in one night. Just one! We have lots of friends who wanted to watch the show too, so we felt an urge to watch all of it at once so we can talk to our friends about it as soon as possible, but I really don't remember anything specific from the whole season. It's all a vague, blended up mush. And at the end of watching it all, I felt...hollow, it really wasn't enjoyable. I never recommend that people binge shows any longer unless they've seen it before and are just looking for background noise

So now three hours is the absolute most I'll watch of any one thing in a sitting and I think it helps.

Netflix has this really bad habit of making a new show basically every week, and these shows don’t bring in the numbers. Instead they should focus on popular shows that would highly benefit from a new season. Shows like Stranger Things and The Dragon Prince are the first two to come to mind. They are very popular, using big names and big budgets to produce a high-quality show that is very well received. Dragon Prince uses a lot of the team from ATLA and even some voice actors from ATLA for crying out loud.
If they add more seasons and episodes per season to already existing shows, I think they’d benefit greatly. Making a new show every once in a while would still work, as long as they look at how to make a good show and what’s popular

The problem I have with the “episodes every week” format is that one single episode doesn’t seem like enough. Especially if the show is slightly shorter, as in between 20-40 mins. HBO Max actually solved this by releasing two or three episodes a week. By doing this, it actually feels substantially more rewarding and fills in the sometimes long wait for the next episode.

I think this is also an effect of how some media has adopted the extreme serialised model of story telling that no episode can stand on its own or leaving every single thing in a cliffhanger.
It causes fatigue if the right distribution for the show isn't picked.
Like look at something like avatar when it was first airing or the owl house now. They're both more episodic that leaves people satisfied. Not saying that's immediately better, just saying that if there's more variety in the kind of storytelling used and each way is picked specially for that story it'll leave better stuff

While being more picky may be a good decision financially, we'd miss out on so much gold... it's a shame.

Economists call it "negative elasticity" but the common name is "death spiral." This is when you raise prices to cover your losses, but wind up losing customers to the point where you have less income than before. The cycle continues until you either 1) go out of business or 2) reach a stable point with a very tiny number of rich customers who don't care about price. My local newspaper is in this mode and over the past 8 years has gone from $1.20 per week to $26, a 2,050% increase. That's over $1,200 per year for a newspaper, and they have finally hit my tolerance limit. At the next renewal, I won't and they'll have to distribute my missing income over their ever-dwindling number of remaining subscribers.

    • @VoIcanoman
      @VoIcanoman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Jesus Christ. TWENTY-SIX DOLLARS? A WEEK? The regular price for Mon-Sat (no Sunday paper anymore) of my local newspaper is $10.80/week (including taxes). And that's CANADIAN dollars (works out to $8.30/week in USD). Moreover, they're always offering 50% off deals, so if you get on one of those (they usually last 5 months), once you let your subscription lapse (instead of paying full price when the deal expires), they'll call you within a couple weeks to offer you the 50% off deal again. I've been doing this for years, and while the price has slowly crept up (about 10% over the past 5 years), it's still a pretty reasonable price to pay for the newspaper...if you even want a physical copy of the newspaper. Because they also offer some pretty insane online-only rates, including one right now that is just insanely cheap - 5 months of unlimited online access for $1.50. THIRTY CENTS A MONTH (plus tax, but c'mon, that's like ~3 or 4 cents, not even a nickel). And that gives you all of the articles, puzzles and comics that a physical paper would.
Your local newspaper must serve a pretty small metropolitan area, because with a cost like that, the potential subscriber base has to be TINY. Either that or it's a trash newspaper and nobody wants to buy it, but that seems less likely.

Early on Netflix got a lot of praise for releasing their shows all at once, with the backing argument that it was based on binge watching behavior they observed with shows like The Office, etc. That was praise in comparison to traditional TV show releases.
But in hindsight I think people were misattributing positive feelings stemming from the on-demand nature (watch it exactly when your schedule allows) onto the more visible aspect of “X episodes all at once.” It’s not that the binge release model was ever good, but that the novelty of an immediately available TV show you can watch whenever you had time for it had no true comparison yet.
Which is wild, because I’m pretty sure 10 years ago the Netflix model of releases was considered the best and only valid choice for streaming content.

Yep. I agree with this. It happened with JBA: Stone Ocean on Netflix. Everyone was super angry because we could binge in like 1-2 days and then have to wait months to hear anything and after that probably wait another 6 months to get part 2. It also got rid of a classic day in Jojo communities, Jojo Fridays were obliterated and everyone disliked it.

I hated every episode being released, there's so much enjoyment from episodes being released weekly that does not exist nowadays, so much speculation, theorizing, even just general chat with friends. Everyone would talk about one tv show for months on end as each episode is released. That does not exist with netflix shows, especially since everyone is afraid to talk about it because one guy in the group is only on episode 4, another is on episode 7, and the other binged watched it all. So what is there to talk about? "Ya that show is good...".
Remember the finale of Breaking Bad or GoT? People went to bars just to watch the finale with 50 other strangers. That socializing aspect will never exist with any Netflix show.

I think first seasons (that they tend to cancel so often) should be dropped all at once, released daily, or in 2 parts like ST s4 is gonna be, and properly advertised. Then second seasons and onwards that now have an established fanbase garnered from the first season should be released weekly. That way you can still rely on good shows, instead of gimmicks like "cute yoda" pictures seen on twitter to pull someone to a show.

the biggest thing I find with netflix is that they dump an entire season (or part) at once, immediately tease the next bit but either delay that second part way past reasonable or they just never release it.
a great example is part 6 of jojos bizarre adventure. on Crunchyroll we had an episode a week, and at almost 50 episodes per part that keeps things going for a while. netflix? they adopted part 6, dumped 12 episodes at once, then didnt drop the next chunk for like a year. it's completely ruined the flow of the show when there was nothing wrong with it to start with. theres a reason I've been really struggling to click with this part when I was so hyped for it to start initially. I've even tried to artificially slow it down for myself - me and my brother only watch one episode a night, we dont binge. but it doesnt fix the problem when you get through the whole chunk in a little under 2 weeks then have to wait a year for the cliffhanger to get resolved. especially with having adhd it gets real easy to just stop caring, even when I'm so excited for it in the beginning
in my opinion netflix has always been better suited for movies. the formula they have for releasing tv shows has never worked well

The amount of licensed content that dropped off was astounding, so they had to try and push the originals, which started the problems we see today. Netflix will continue its decline, and eventually close and be absorbed into another company within five years if they don't turn things around, and fast. I do agree that the contents of this video would help, but even then, it feels like it's delaying the eventual death of Netflix.

The issue of Netflix dropping seasons all at once has been an issue for a while now, especially with anime. It even has a name: "Netflix Jail" whereby English speakers are locked out of anime currently airing in Japan until it's done and then it releases all at once. Which doesn't help everyone except pirates who are able to provide it weekly and for free to boot. Komi-san is a weird exception but they still dropped the ball by not translating text despite the series being text-heavy since that's the primary communication method for Shouko Komi wh-to my understanding-has selective mutism. And don't even get me started with JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 6 with it being released in 3 batches despite it being weekly up until this point is an excellent case study as to why weekly releases still make sense.
I'm still interested in hearing MatPat's thoughts on the larger issue at hand though: the fragmentation of streaming. These companies thought they were brilliant by not having to pay Netflix to host their content by creating their own streaming service, but all it does is increase piracy. We're in cable 2.0, why pay $150-$200/month for 10 streaming services when piracy is free and arguably more ethical in some cases given the scummy nature of some of these companies such as Funimation/Crunchyroll which help maintain a system that keeps animators poor and overworked? Along with the even bigger debate over IP law as a whole and whether it's beneficial or detrimental to society? While by no means the most important questions, they still deserve conclusive answers

I wholeheartedly agree with everything said, and I actually am experiencing a real life example of the difference. The Owl House S2B is releasing 1 episode every Saturday, and Heartstopper (which is a TV adaptation of a comic series I love) was just released on Netflix. I have a lot of friends that watch both shows, but here’s the difference:
I always look forward to the next episode coming up, especially after a HUGE cliffhanger. I talk about that cliffhanger with my friends throughout the week, sharing fan art and theories to hold up until the next release. One episode in particular, “Hollow Mind”, had me so emotionally damaged that I wrote a 4-5 paragraph essay to make myself feel better. I then proceeded to go on social media to see what others thought.
Heartstopper released on I don’t know what date, but I found out it was out from a friend. So I looked it up, and sure enough, there it was. I binged the 8 episodes over two consecutive days, and didn’t even get to talk about it until 3 days later. All that ensued was short conversations about how well done the show was and the amazing actors that look just like the comic. But that was it, because it was already over. There should be a season 2 at some point, but that’s a while away. I would love to talk about it more, but there just isn’t much to talk about. Which is disappointing, because I love the show and I know a lot of other people do too.

The bingeing thing is TRUE. I LOOOOOVE Bingeing shows, but it being able to just be gobbled up in one go leaves me without anything else to enjoy and because I flew through the experience so fast, and for some reason I don't enjoy it as much and I don't remember.
Then you have something like severance, Barry, and killing it, where you have to wait every week, I remember way more details and I enjoy it much better.
It's agonizing because I'm waiting for the week to be over for when I'm going to get that show next and I think part of the enjoyment and satisfaction is the yearning to see it and the yearning to wait a whole week so you can see what happens next.

I would partially agree with you. Specifically on two points I think u r spot on: Netflix desperately needs more data analysts in their team and the lack of marketing for all of their content is puzzling. In a way they suffer from still not planning competetive. Their strategy worked fine, when they were the big buck, but their biggest competitors are now studios with tons of experience in marketing and with recognisable IPs.
Now for my disagreement: I think HBO and Disney are only this competetive cuz they are overfunding their series the same way Netflix did. Sooner or later both will have to start cutting costs and increasing prizes to get into profitability. Moreover the stockmarket tends to overreact when investing in corporations with primarily digital services. The lack of physical components tends to make investors less willing to hold on to their shares. Also Disney has a big weakness in my opinion. They got great movies and big IPs, but they lack variety and rotation. Everytime I open Netflix I can find new movies and series. So as soon as Disney slows down their output they will lose a bunch of users.
And on your points on monetizability and spreading out series I disagree strongly. Focussing to create more monetizable IPs is exactly the reason I don't like most of Disneys new content. I hate the feeling of seeing a character and instantly knowing it is in there to be sold as a toy. It makes money, but it limits your creativaty. And while u r absolutely right in saying people like to wait for the next episode people cannot be excited about too many upcoming things. So you would run the risk of losing a lot of viewers mid-season cuz sth else caught their excitement. Moreover adequate marketing gets even harder when you have to advertise every time a new episode is online.
Either way I enjoy your content, keep it up. There are only a few channels that suceed in balancing depth and aproachability like u guys do.

Eh? I don't agree that disney overfunding. They bring out less original show in the same amount of time compare to netflix. Plus, like matt said. Disney make money outside of those shows, too. Which mean they can easily recoup the losses. Just look at how much baby yoda stuffs they sell

I would also add, on top of this 1episode a week method, they should have different shows throughout the week. For example, stranger things every Monday, squid game every tuesday, a different show each day of the week. To avoid people being bored and waiting so long for the next episode of there favorite show.
I have some favorite shows that all come out on Sundays which makes me bored waiting each week.

Hey Matpat or to anyone reading, the Grogru/baby Yoda was spot on how much merchandising can be made. But remember that Disney almost dropped the ball on that.
Back in Disneyland (2020) the merch only had the new trilogy but a baby yoda long sleeve was the only thing I could see. I think their marketing was trying to force fans to only buy the movie stuff but the Mandalorian was popular when it started showing. I think they realized when the parks are closed the streaming hit was a cash cow they weren’t milking.

I've worked on several Netflix properties and while I appreciate them giving me a job due to the amount of content they produce, I agree with Matt's analysis of their business model. Netflix also needs to chill with funding terrible content, because instead of seeing it for myself I'd rather watch a TH-cam commentary channel recap and roast it in 10-15 min.

An issue I noticed was how they make a show with good potential, that has room for several more seasons, but they just make one more season and it's clearly "rushed". A good example of this in my opinion is "Another Life". Season 1 had good pacing and kept my interest as I watched 1 episode a day. Then season 2 just never came for so long I kinda just lost interest. Then season 2 did drop, and It felt like 3 season mashed into 1.
    Also another mistake Netflix made:
    "Cuties"

    Prewatch Comments:
My opinion is that Netflix introduced binge culture only for it to be it's downfall. Shows that release periodically rather than all at once have much more staying power as they encourage new community discussion every week as everyone catches up at the same pace.
Also we all knew this was coming. Streaming platforms were supposed to solve antiquated TV services but we're approaching TV package prices here.
Netflix with ads won't solve this problem because the quality of content on Netflix is typically incredibly subpar. Why would I watch Netflix at a low price with ads when I can just watch YT content that is far more enticing?

As a person who really enjoys JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, I was excited to hear Stone Ocean to be coming to Netflix, only to be disappointed that they would release it in bulk. And I was not the only one, the reddit discussions and jojotwt were full of people disappointed and angry at Netflix for releasing the episodes in bulk, as this ultimately decreased interest in the series, and also ruined the tradition of "Jojo Friday" (when people would all discuss what happened in the latest episode and whatnot).
This is especially horrible because out of all parts of JoJo's, Stone Ocean is one of the most disliked because of its complicated fights, unorthodox pacing, and major plot twists relating to previously established characters, and a good adaptation would help alleviate some stigma away from this part. But alas, due to majority of people binging the episodes in the first day people still felt that the part was confusing, unpolished, and just plain bizarre (roll credits).
You can actually search "jojo stone ocean jojo friday" on google and see a bunch of threads on reddit and twitter from people how the analytics from the latest part are sitting rock bottom when compared to previous parts, even though the hype for JoJo's was pretty much at an all time high (Part 8 has just finished in manga form, while JoJo pose and Giorno theme have become Tiktok classics). And yet, it did not translate into interest for Stone Ocean, by all means a finale that has been over ten years in the making.

These are very impressive points, especially that they went all in on the binge model which I think destabilized the ability for huge portions of the population to enjoy entertainment together. Now if they take it away, they hurt people who are all about binging, and it still might be too late either way.
My thought is quality, not quantity. The Queen's Gambit is one of the best shows of the past decade, but not enough people saw it because the marketing was horrible and they were distracted by something else silly, of low quality.
I really admire the executives for allowing so many creators to share their visions, but many of these creators should've been turned to youtube or something lower tier. We all recall when Netflix started making original movies like Bright or Cloverfield Paradox that were massive disappointments, they started canceling everything randomly, and green-lit so much trash that you have to actively question everything that looks good to avoid wasting precious hours of time. While even a subpar HBO show is just okay, Netflix has an entire middle class of subpar, and "okay" seems to be decently far on the right side of their standard distribution.
Let's not kid ourselves -- they also really relied on The Office and Parks and Rec more than we want to admit.
