Eva and I recently visited the incredible city of Bologna, which I learned has an intriguing nickname: "La Grassa," or "The Fat." I was skeptical that this particular Italian city deserved the title, but Eva was determined to prove me wrong with the help of Bolognese food historian Luca Cesari.
It was all going great until I ate something off the menu and got food poisoning...
If you enjoy this video, please give it a thumbs-up and subscribe to the channel!

Stay well, Harper! Some thing similar but totally different happened to me back in 1997 when I spent five days in London with my English class. Due to mad cow disease, we had to avoid all steak houses. Instead of my friends, I did not go for bad pizza (Pizza Hut, Deep Pan etc.) or KFC and returned hungry, because there weren no proper restaurants nearby. this was at least as (culinary) terrible as your trip to Bologna. Enjoy your meal(s)!

It is really hard to be seated in a restaurant in Bologna, with one dish more exquisite than the other, and have stomach problems.
Dishes that in a normal situation would have been really a pleasure to taste them and instead realize that only the smell makes you stomach upset.

So sad for Harper, such a pity he couldn't enjoy the amazing food here in Bologna!
    Few quick notes:
-real Bologna nickname is "la grassa e la dotta" 'cause of the food(obviusly) and the university, maybe the oldest in the word (if I recall well)
-Passatelli are not fron Bologna, they are actualy a Romagna's dish!
-the "breads" that Harper couldn't name at lunch was tigelle (the flat one) and crescentine (the fried one) and what Eva was speading was not giusto meat it was almost certainly pesto modenese (and it is unbelievebly good)
PS: would be lovely to meet you next time you will be in Bologna

Luckily, thanks to the strict controls that are compulsory on the food supply chain in Italy, the average food poisoning here is less severe than in other countries. But that lunch cold hav defeated even an healthy Italian, believe me! Three first dishes, one of them quite fat, and a gnocco fritto with vegetables and raw cuts is more than enough for a couple of days usually. And also the bolognese cutlet is not the lighter way of cooking meat we have in Italy.

Oh Harper! I SOOOO feel for you! I was in your exact position when we visited Paris years ago. I had a lovely salad -- can't even remember what else -- and it WRECKED me! I know the hotel cleaning staff thought someone died in that room. At least you were able to get up and move around and eat a bite. When I was finally able to move, we got on the subway, and a guy got on the train smelling strongly of meatballs or sausage or something and it was all I could do to contain myself until the next stop, where I proceeded to wretch right into the closest trashcan; didn't matter one iota who was looking. You did well to hold yourself together. I hope you get to do it all again when you feel better.

Putting aside for one moment the tragedy of missing out on enjoying one of the world's true food capitals because of being sick, can I just express my heartfelt gratitude that you did _not_ put mandolin and accordion music over the scenes in the streets of Bologna...!
I know it's a small thing, and since this video had real Italians involved making it there was no chance they'd make this mistake. But still, after decades of videos about Italy where they just slap on some mandolin music in places where it has nothing to do with the local culture (Venice being the worst example), I sincerely thank you.

I had a very similar experience, except it was chorizo and eggs for breakfast in Oatman, AZ. After breakfast, I drove back to Sacramento, which should have taken a day. But I stopped in Fresno and took a nap, then had to get a hotel in Stockton and spent the night. The next day, we finally made it home, but I don't remember the trip at all. I had a fever and was extremely nauseous. For the next week, I could hardly eat anything, not even a small salad. I feel your pain. I hope you made it back to Bologna to try again. I really feel for you. My now-ex-wife & I (not ex- because of this, BTW) were on a wine tasting trip in Napa Valley. Each day, we would go to a couple of vineyards, then she would be not feeling well, and we would have to head back to the inn. When I said that she wasn't feeling well, I am understating things. She would become violently ill. I would say, "Come on, let's go to the hospital," but she kept refusing, and she wasn't willing to cut the trip short either. The best I could do was to make her promise to go as soon as we got home. It turns out that she had a full load of gallstones, and she was taken for surgery in a matter of hours after getting diagnosed. While it is not a minor thing, I was glad that it was something that could be quickly taken care of, because I was terrified that it might be something worse -- to the point I had some concern about whether she was even going to make it home.

When far from home experienced travelers avoid certain high risk foods even though they are favorites. Raw fish is at the top of the list along with clams and oysters served raw on the shell. Mussels require caution even cooked because they naturally harbor unfriendly bacteria since they act as filters. This is not a big deal near home because you can stay in and take care of yourself. But these items can ruin a trip. Who wants to spend a day (or 2) in the toilet in a hotel room. Not worth it! And there are so many other wonderful but safer things to eat. Stay well guys.

My one time in Italy I missed a step and fell in the house I was staying at, narrowly missing hitting my head on a marble sculpture. I did have a nosebleed, but my nose wasn't broken. The next day I was out and taking photos of hay bales when I tripped on a divot on the road and fell on the same knee -- into a mud puddle. So our host had to drive me back up to the house to change. I still have scar tissue on my left knee from these falls. Then I got bronchitis and missed 2 days of touring, though honestly by then having two lazy days in Bettona was kind of delightful. I got better, but then I relapsed on the plane home and was sick for a week afterward. So I feel your pain, Harper. Oh, and my husband had died only six months before then so my emotional resiience wasn't exactly stellar.
It is now 8 years later. I have always wanted to return to Italy and get it right this time. I'm considering one of your tours in 2023 if I can get up the guts to be a solo traveler.

Just a sidenote: in Bologna we call the church near the public toilet basilica, not duomo.
I've never eaten a poke bowl. I'd like to, but only in a place recommended to me by someone I know. Ten-twenty years ago the city was full of sushi places (they were the "in" food at the time), most of them selling low quality fish and now they are replaced by poke bowls selling the same kind of fish. If I were a tourist I'd rather stick to McDonald's or Burger King.
The crescentine (the fried bread), a typical bread made in the Emilia part of the region, are also called gnocco fritto (but only by people living in Modena or Reggio Emilia). The tigelle (the round bread) instead come from Modena although now you can find them in other cities as well.

You will probably not find this reaction, coming so very, very late, but our copy of STORIA DELLA PASTA IN DIECI PIATTI arrived yesterday. We have read a bit and are ecstatic. Sorry about the mail system (US &
Italian!) The book is fantastic! If we might be so bold, we would recommend Massimo Montanari (professor) in Bologna. His books are also wonderful. We especially recommend IL MITHO DELLE ORIGINE which dovetails beautifully. Thank you dfor the recommendation.

Harper being sick reminds me of a school trip to Paris when I was 16. All kinds of food smells made me nauseous too, even the smell of chestnuts being roasted, a smell that I normally love.

Arrrgh - I think a lot if us understand that feeling. My incident was coincidentally in Italy, too. At a roadside stop south of Rome I had a cappuccino, something I've never been especially interested in. Drinking hot, heavy cream didn't seem delicious to me, but that morning I gave it a try. It didn't taste good, but I drank it. About two hours later, while touring an old garden, I threw up in the middle of a path with other people around. No time to even hide among the bushes! I was mortified.😰

Awww. As a suggestion, if you feel queasy and you really have to nibble on anything, bread is the way to go. Also, the tortellini were the original mistake: the broth makes nausea 100 times worse.

I will say you were such a trooper to stick it out and put on a brave face despite how ill you clearly felt. Glad you are feeling better and maybe stay in your comfort zone of Italian specialties!

I’m sorry to hear that you were not feeling well from food poisoning… you know I also experienced the same when I went to a restaurant in Shenzhen. I ate, probably semi-raw oyster, and after a few hours I suffered from diarrhea. The rule is not to consume raw seafoods when overseas. You won’t know if they were clean, especially if the water was clean enough.
If you don’t mind sharing with you, drink warm honey lemon water every morning to start off your day 🍋🍯

Sorry that happened. What could go wrong trying Hawaiian food in Bologna. Obviously something lost in translation: poke (Hawaiian)=cut crosswise vs. poke (English)=thrust, prod, and punch one's internal parts.

Poor Harper! But I saw passatelli in the store window! I just made a batch last week (my father liked lots of pepper so that’s how I make it). Fond childhood memories of cranking the grinder handle to crush the stale bread when I could barely see over the table top. What about an episode on Italian soups?

Harper, you have to go back to Bologna, I can't really stand the idea that this is going to be your memory of that city and its food forever.
Also, I have some general rules about the food I eat, one is that anything that has eyes and/or a mouth needs to be thoroughly cooked.

Thing happen Harper.. You were a trooper hanging in there with all that great food even you were not feeling great. Thats a great sign of respect. This scenario served as a travel tip to all visiting Italy. Stick with the local food.. Hope you are feeling better, hope you can go back to Bologna on a future trip feeling better health wise so you can enjoy all the wonderful food. Eva was happy enjoying the good food and conversation. Next time stick with local, and have some stomach medicine in your backpack. Great video.
