How an Ex-Tesla Employee Used Science to Win a CS:GO Major

- It’s safe to say that, if you’re a fan of Counter-Strike, esports or, well, theScore esports, you’ve probably savoured the smell of gunfire and freedom, like, a billion times.
What you may not know is that it wasn’t just RUSH, tarik, Tim, Skadaddy and the Smoke Criminal who took home that title.
It was their coach: Soham ‘valens’ Chowdhury, a Stanford-educated, tech-obsessed tactical genius who left behind roles at some of the world’s most prestigious companies to not only compete in and coach professional Counter-Strike, but make it a little more calculated.
To help NA CS from becoming less of a meme and more of a science.

18 minute video and you still haven't told me "How an Ex-Tesla Employee Used Science to Win a CS:GO Major". We don't need to see the physical stats - but a little coverage of the technical side would've been interesting. I feel like most of these videos could be half the length if you removed repeated "information". Appreciate the esports coverage, but I don't feel like clicking on your videos is worth it anymore. Wayyy too long for the amount of info they pack.
Agreed. I'm just gonna read the comments first from now on to spare me 15+ minutes.
True
bro Im 7 minutes in and still waiting for the fucking title...
now TH-cam is all about who has the longest video, quality short videos went extinct.
Literally any time I see this guy narrating I immediately click off, he's way too extra with everything, and usually doesn't even really know what he's talking about.
Wait, so nothing about "HOW" with regards to the actual data or science he used to win or help the team improve? This video just recounted highlights and showed us a few superficial interviews with a singular example of one of Karrigan's tendencies.
This is more about who their coach was than how he did anything and we all already knew who their coach was. Even if it's speculation, any research in the actual how would've at least been something new to make this a worthy watch...
Exactly. Just vague fluff and nothing to actually show how he added anything to that run.
Not like I'm expecting this channel to deep dive into the stats and analytics or game theory or whatever, but they had 18 minutes, they could've given us something.
It’s just a regression of kills on wins Lmao
Saved me a watch, thank you
We have an Indian guy who killed E-Sports India....
And there we have a guy who was there for NA's first and only MAJOR.... Nice!

You know what's the most underrated factor in C9's major win? Karrigan's horrible choking problem
Idk man what's wrong with him sometimes he is able to pull of ridiculous comebacks like against liquid in starladder and against astralis in pro league etc but sometimes he just chokes completely
Better team wins at end of the day.... when you play as a team you trust each other and get the dub, we cant just blame karrigan.... if we was in his shoes maybe we could understand his pov but i do remeber i think when he was in tsm he was holding short from bench on mirage and it was very important round close to finish or ot not sure, n he missed the easiest shot becus he probably felt nervous maybe its one of his weakness that he never mastered it but who the fk am i to say m 2.3k elo andy who play normal faceit haha
Yeah it wasn't karrigan. There were 3 rounds on inferno which were almost solely lost by NiKo. The major one is where he pushes through a long smoke and dies instantly, so C9 knew B was weak. FaZe lost CT economy off of it and the momentum.
@Balakeh lmao no, rewatch map 3

Would love to see how he uses data in a specific way or an example.
parents: video games are nothing like irl
this video:
from a tesla engineer to a tier 3 csgo player to a major winner, what a legend
10:16 This man went to Standford, worked at Tesla and Google...but speaks like a true gamer. Just pure nonsense and lack of a bigger vocabulary so the stupid people can understand him without over complicating things.
Kinda like, it's like, you know like, then you don't know like, like like like like xD
I really wanted to know the deep back story on this and their run. Great to see someone like valens make an insane difference using data. Amazing work bro, keep going. Much love. I would love to hear more of the key analysis points and reads they had.
And the boston major winner player who stays in cs is only one left
there's two, RUSH and Stewie, but RUSH got kicked from complexity
@cyan he doesn't count
@cyan tarik already left the scene for streaming
Damn that hits hard
Valens job as head of Data Science at EG as a career would be a dream for me
he is basically the guy in anime who goes under mental monologue during or before a fight analysing everything going around him
This is like Moneyball, the esports edition.

i was expecting more like the way he uses data or what new things he brings to the table but nothing was expanded upon, pretty meh
This exactly my thought
Yea pointless video
that would cause Dmitri's eyes to spin. Not everyone enjoys staring at lengthy data analysis and Valens' leaking karrigan's mental weakness (at the time) is already a big enough clue about how sick his observation was.
Yea trivial
@@fadhilyudistira8819 Eh, I think you can explain how he does it without going into a lengthy data analysis. That's what good content creators do - they condense the info and share it in an easily digestible way. They barely said anything related to the title in this entire video.
3 minutes in. And Dimitri has me simping again. Great story telling
The thumbnail is nuts.
Looking at Jizuuke inting on EGs League team: "yep, seems legit."
C9 latched onto this idea in Apex too I think. PVPX is their comp coach and analyst, and they have seen crazy success recently, giving the analytics the much deserved credit in interviews and such, really exciting to see esports get this sophisticated
Main point of video: given Valens his in game trophy.
He's the epitome of "oh it is but simple geometry"
He is the actual brain of Tesla, Elon is just the merchant. It is fairly unsurprising
seeing baby face Twistzz again on that TSM roster made me happy for some reason
I wish you guys would've let Valens talk more about the statistical and analytical strategies and weaknesses he saw and how he exploited them more in-depth. I work in big data.
I always knew that Valens is some sort of a super-smart dude, and here we are lol
I love Soham, seems like such a nice guy

The title made me insta click this vid, nice one!
Velen, Chet, FNS, Shahzam - Seems like the secret sauce for winning majors for NA is a south asian dude calling the shots.
Basically the “Moneyball” of esports.
this big brain put a modmic wireless on a g pro wireless headset... Im kinda mad I never considered that...
Dmn I love the title
18 minutes with zero explanation of how he used any data to help the team.. the only point they made was that karrigan tried to push early in the round and they used that. Clickbait bs.
Actually wasted my time with that "how" in the title and they did nothing but tell us "who"
Sad, they'll upload anything to get views, even with such good stories they won't include any substantial content
I am proud partially although in NA a in dian has won a major in the form of coach
