    lyrics
we, we wanna swim the deepest depths of oblivion
we wanna know that the gods have us in control
we see the cards and we go to fold
we play along but it soon grows old
they took the ark and sold it all for parts
they’ve got a fist full of fucking gold
a return on the souls they sold
do you remember who we are?
these tyrants will build an abyss
but the rest of us wish to exist
we’re hiding like a shadow in the dark
    in the dark
be the change that you wanna see
    no not like that
it’s a risk we can all agree
    fuck the fucking facts
but it bleeds right in front of me
    we’re under attack
yeah, we all know that these rights are holy
we’re never gonna leave this shell
let’s hope your gold don’t fail you now
save us a special place in hell
you’re the reason that our hearts ache
    deep fake
we are one and the fucking same
we see the cards and we go to fold
we play along but it soon grows old
we took the ark and sold it all for parts
they’ve got a fist full of fucking gold
a return on the souls they sold
do you remember who we are?
these tyrants will build an abyss
but the rest of us wish to exist
we’re fighting with a shadow in the dark

A solid, catchy track! I love the lyrical references to their older music. 'A return on the souls they sold' being taken from the lyrics to Nihilist and 'But some of us wish to exist' as a reference to the last album's title. I really enjoy how their lyrics echo throughout their career, it makes it feel like one continuous vision and story. I can't wait to hear the rest of the new record!

While I agree on the continuities, I do think the lyrics lack a certain kind of touch, especially in the chorus. "Do you remember who we are?", is such a bland and by now overused boring line.

Definitely the best single off the new album they've released so far. Not a huge fan of the cleaner singing, but the instrumental work was definitely a step-up the previous singles and that breakdown was sick. Here's to more songs of this quality.

    • @WhereOceansMeeet
      @WhereOceansMeeet 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

The instrumentals were the only good things about the song, in my opinion. And I agree, Tear Gas was utter rubbish, in my opinion. I didn't mind "When we were young though." While not close to their older material, it was far better than half of their last album.

They're slowly turning into BMTH if you pay attention. Not only they're following them w/ the small case letters for song titles, but they're also experimenting w/ this industrial sound. The main difference between the old Architects and the new? I still get goosebumps every time I listen to Lost Forever, Lost Together / AOGHAU / Holy Hell / and some older stuff like These Colors don't run and Devil's Island. No goosebumps here. Not for the last album or the latest 2 songs. Not bitching about it. I still flew from Eastern Europe to see Architects live in the UK this year, and I will never forget it. I hope they are happy with what they are doing, which is more important than anything. I can still listen to all the old stuff which I consider a pure masterpiece and would still travel thousands of miles to see and hear it live. This is probably my favorite of the new singles! All of the singles I've heard have been pretty enjoyable though I didn't particularity care for the chorus of this song. The verse, Josh screaming section(Finally), 2nd verse, breakdown were all pretty good. Breakdown was interesting with the guitar tone and synth work. That was really cool. Need to see more.

Ofcourse not, I’m all for evolution of sound even if it doesn’t appeal to me as much. People have forgotten that yes while Architects was heavier back then.. their sound was constantly changing.
But tbf the most disappointing change was Parkway Drive once IRE came out and so on.. they kinda lost their high energy drive and started sounding more like Limp Bizkit with their new rap sounding song, and FFDP… one of my least favorite styles I’ll be honest. But I still respect them immensely for their musicianship, likewise with Architects

I'll always love this band... but man the singles off this album feel so bland not because it isn't heavy, (I'm a sucker for pop and soft stuff too) but because it all is just so forgettable. The lyricism especially feels so simplistic now, it's like rhymes take precedent over melodies or meaning. I don't even feel like I'm even listening to the same band anymore. Hopefully the full album has some stuff for us older fans, I enjoyed hall of their last album, but I'm worried about this one from what I've heard off these singles.
I believe bands can grow and put out great music even when they get softer - Dayseeker is a great recent example of this, their new stuff is softer but the lyrics are so impactful and the choruses feel massive because of how they build up and really put the thought into the melodies and use of electronics to add ambiance. Octane-core Architects is painfully reminiscent of what happened with Memphis May Fire. Sam is such a talented singer it is such a shame he isn't using more of his vocal styles on these singles, I know it must be hard on his voice to do the heavy stuff every show but I truly do miss the rawness of his harsh vocals. Very few people can do the melodic sing-scream thing like Sam, but we don't really get to hear it anymore. I remember when he put out Yellowjacket with Spritbox how badly I missed hearing his trademark technique from him. His clean vocals are good, they just lack the uniqueness he brought to the table before. I guess that's why I'm not vibing with these singles in general anymore, Architects songs used to feel like they had so much depth... everything from the vocals, lyrics, riffs, electronics, and melodies all just feel overly simplistic now.
Simple songs CAN be catchy, but making a song simplistic doesn't MAKE it catchy.

Many people talking about their 'simplistic' new direction praise 'Holy Hell' like it's the second coming of Christ. Yet that's when they really started spamming the generic 'Verse-Chorus-Verse-Chorus-Bridge-Chorus' structure. At least 'For Those That Wish To Exist' is a highly eclectic album. 'Holy Hell' is one of the most routine and generic albums I've ever heard, with one or two standouts (such as 'The Seventh Circle.') If people want interesting songwriting and composition, they should be looking at titles like 'Lost Forever // Lost Together' and "All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us."
Nothing about this single is all that simplistic save for the song structure. The vocal dynamics are all over the place; the second verse is an incredibly interesting curveball; the breakdown and outro are glitchy; the FX production is incredibly layered and unpredictable. Meanwhile people will listen to songs like 2018's 'Hereafter' and act like it's just as creative as 'Gone With The Wind' from the 2016 album.
