    Assassin's Creed was literally what I was thinking when that "assassin" in the Acolyte showed up.
    One of the tenants of the Assassin Order is to "hide in plain sight", even though Assassins are more than capable to fight multiple opponents upfront. And the reason should be obvious: it's much easier to get a pounce on your target if they don't know you are about to.
    What the hell is the point of her challenging them like that?! What?!!

    The Acolyte infuriates me with how horrendous its writing is but this sequence right here is everything wrong with modern Disney Star Wars. Rule of cool spectacle with no substance. And look; I love kung fu inspired fights. I do love my battle anime and series. But it’s meaningless if the setup and characters aren’t there.
    Imagine if we had seen more of Indara life before this moment? Show us that she embodies the Jedi teachings before Mae arrived? I think that could have been a more effective way than “ fight me bro” and having Indara be so incompetent to not stop Mae from attacking INNOCENT patreons. WTF.

      BUT MUH LIGHTSABER
      Unfortunate every episode of any modern star wars show except for Andor has a minimum requirement of one uninspired, substanceless, and no stake fight scene, usually with lightsabers to fulfill Disney's obsession with iconography of a franchise they single-handedly destroyed.

    • @shira_yone
      @shira_yone 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The problem is rule of cool only applies when it's actually cool, and these fights aren't cool. Prequels got lots of rule of cool fight with minimum substance, but they're cool and it's so fun to watch unlike these new stuff.

    Star wars is officially dead and there's nothing that can save it at this point. Some people might have thought that when Disney bought Star Wars. It was the beginning of the end. Now it's officially true and those people are right.

    The writers are not hired based on talent so there’s no understanding of really basic concepts like degradation
    If you want your character to be cool by overpowering a jedi then don’t make the jedai a fool that can be beaten easily but again writing that would require talent

    • @yurisei6732
      @yurisei6732 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Well, that's what it is. That's the problem with Star Wars, everything it's possible to write for it is going to feel like fanfiction no matter how good the writer because star wars has so much canonical and EU baggage that there's no space left to write in that isn't going to require overwriting or ignoring something else. Even Lucas would struggle to make a new movie that didn't feel fanfictiony. Star Wars as a franchise should just be brought to a close. No one should own it, there should be no new "canon" entries.

    I feel like the tension of the whole scene would have been better if the audience followed INDARA into the cantina. She isn't there for any major reason in particular, but we see she's coded as a Jedi and Carrie Ann Moss has the stoic gravitas to pull it off.
    She solves a seemingly minor bar dispute diplomatically and sits down, but based on how the patrons are acting, we as the audience begin to notice something is not right at the same time she does. It is as that point that Mei explodes into combat with her, having used her own Force abilities to subdue the bar ahead of time. None of us know she IS a Force user yet in the audience, just more of a martial artist.
    Indara attempts to reason with her and surprise is when Mei exhibits the Force push. Then it could get into how, as she's losing, she uses underhanded tactics to put others in harm's way, resulting in Indara's death. We as the audience do not see Mei's face in the confusion as she flees.
    This would add heightened tension because it shows Mei is a DANGER to have taken down Indara, we don't know who she is, and so when it jumps to Osha being accused, we actually don't know if it's accurate or not. It keeps us on our toes because now we have a potentially unreliable protagonist narrator.
    Instead, Mei is nerfed in power and motives because we're supposed to sympathize with her or see her as conflicted or juvenile, but that doesn't make for a good Big Bad to carry your show. We haven't seen enough of her yet.

    This scene kind of could exist as it is if was written a bit better. I.e. "an overly confident assassin tries to show off, but the fight doesn't go as planned, so she has to resort to taking hostages." Characters failing in stupid ways and killing people in the process is something Coen brothers could make. And consciously showing main characters' incompetence is underutilized trope IMO.

      Star Wars has always had fires in space. If you're criticising that, you need to take a step back and think about exactly where your criticism is coming from. There's plenty to criticise already in Acolyte, there's no need to demand that it also obey physics more than Star Wars ever has before.

    Omg YES! Mae was more like a cocky bounty hunter than an assassin! What a total NOOB! I was yelling at my screen at the stupidity of it all!!! Sending Mae out to challenge Indara first was a freaking suicide mission and an absolutely MORONIC move on the part of her masters who were TRYING to hide their presence from the Jedi because they were still gathering their strength!!! ISTFG this is SO STUPID!!! This is someone's tumbler self-insert fanfic!

  • @todayismay25th
    @todayismay25th 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    On the one hand, I actually do think that from what little we've seen of the show the writers are actually trying to show that Mae is easily manipulated and generally not the sharpest tool in the shed. At least, that's what I hope. For example, when the Jedi form a plan to capture Mae in episode 2, it is actually a more reasonable and careful strategy than Mae's hotheaded and foolish challenge.
    Other than that, I will agree it is looking quite bad. Dialogues are shallow at best and nonsensical at worst (why would Master's Sol first thought be 'you attack me without a weapon or whatever the English original says? Also, what's that about, doesn't she have the little kunai things?). The second Jedi's death also doesn't make much sense - if the guy wanted to die to atone for whatever happened, why the protective barrier and why would he talk to Mae only after she comes back. Don't tell me he changed his mind, because he says he'd been waiting. I'm not an expert, but there don't seem to be any good shots, it all seems fairly mid. I also think that if you're really going to go with the identical twin trope you should try to make it interesting, but nope, all mystery is revealed as soon as possible. I'm pretty sure they'll predictably use this to connect to the reylo diad they made in the sequels, there are already enough Episode 8 parallelism for me to give them the benefit of the doubt. The actors are a plus I think - again not an expert, but they do seem to be doing great, and the fight scenes are nice to watch.

    This whole thing relies on the assumption that Mae is supposed to be viewed as smart. I didn't get that impression, I thought this scene was about showing that Mae is an immature, prideful kid. Like, if this *is* bad writing, it's writing so bad that it loops back round to being good writing of the exact opposite of the intended scene. The way that all the civilians immediately mocked Mae, and Indara dismissed her challenge as if it was beneath her, really made it clear to me that we were supposed to be mocking Mae too.
    With the fight choreography genuinely being pretty good (better than the vast majority of Disney projects), I don't think it's very likely that this scene is badly written. I think it's just a scene about characters you're supposed to not like. It's everything after this scene where the problems start to arise. For example, no one knows how to pronounce "mechanic" and virtually everyone has a gratuitous American accent, even the Jedi who are supposed to represent peak sophistication.
