Interesting point about the ‘4th wall’ on social media. Similar to live entertainment the audience can and does react. Big difference is the audience is not point in time but changing and eternal 💫
26:53 this one is the best, instead of cheating a bit and having his hand create a nice heart they actually follow his hand and you end up with the most horrifying looking heart ever.
I think the unspoken and problematic appeal of a lot of podcasting/streaming/gaming content is that the casual nature of the conversations can simulate friendship for a lot of lonely people (especially when there is a live chat element), and I can see that leading to some unhealthy feelings of attachment and entitlement. It was uncomfortably common on Twitch for viewers to donate bits in order to pass on messages along the lines of "watching your content helps with my depression"
Dear CGP Grey, I respect that your life is yours and meant for public consumption simply because you enjoy making public content. I hope most of the audience feels the same way. I would never want to encroach on what you want to keep personal or private.
Brady, the term is called "stolen valor" and it can be a punishable offense but it all depends on accuracy of the uniform and content in which it's used.
When Brady said that plastic has it's drawbacks i honestly heard it as "strawbacks" and that's such an amazing pun that i'm now retroactively sad that they missed the opportunity to make said pun.
When it comes to the airplane window discussion i feel like the simple solution is to simply talk it out with the person or people you're sharing a row or aisle with and either arrive at a consensus or make a compromise. You know just be reasonable, and whenever the flight attendants make a call that overrides whatever decision your row or aisle has made. Seems pretty straight forward to me.
Taking photos for others? ugh. I NEVER ask people to take photos for me. I have no desire to be in any photos. I avoid being in photos, especially photos that I might have to look at. I'll take a photo for someone, I won't ask someone to take one for me and refuse when people just randomly offer to take one for me.
I feel like the best solution to the plastic straw ban is no straws. Like most times i drank something with a straw, I could have just drunk it directly, especially if it was served in a glass.
many good long haul airlines have a great solution for the window debate. They have cameras in the outside of the plane which are live streamed to the inflight entertainment screens, so whoever wants to look outside, can just look at their screen, and they can have the shades down if other people require that.
I went to the movies a while back and chose an empty seat when the place had less than 20% full. And of-coarse a couple had to sit right next to me. I just moved down 1 row and was fine but they had a good 30 seats around me to chose from.
I appreciated the discussion on Project Cyclops. It sounds like it was a productive journey for Grey. I still think doing my own 'Project Cyclops' would bring benefits into my life. It's interesting that it ended up being a year instead of only ~3-4 months.
I Hate Everything was in the same boat some years back th-cam.com/video/QH-8PqS84qA/w-d-xo.html It's been an ongoing problem with TH-cam to just remove people and it seems like the only way to stop it is if you have connections. If you didn't have connections like Twitter you might have your account removed forever just by random accident.
I am completely pro plastic. It is a wonder material that makes a lot of products possible. What I am against is our main way of disposing of waste material, plastic or otherwise. Plastic is great, but garbage needs to go back to the drawing board.
Not making the person's face visible makes it easier for people to identify with the emotion/idea that the astronaut is trying to convey. If you send a smiley to someone they get what you're saying but if you send someone a hyper detailed drawing of someone they are just going to comment on the drawing. Understanding Comics does a great explanation of this.
This has come up a lot on twitter, and maybe previous podcast episodes, their podcast host (Squarespace) seems to be changing how they manage podcast feeds for a fair few of their users. If you use pocketcast(I think) on iPhone it will work there. #squarespacebeyond100 becomes #squarespacebeyond6
I'm huge fan of NASA and I love the gifs. I believe there is honor in humor and it doesn't at all demean the uniform. In fact, if it is worn on humankind's behalf, if should represent the full spectrum of the human condition. Levity is what allows us to survive a trip to the moon or the several months on the ISS or to get to Mars. I promise the guy with a stone face that takes everything seriously and sucks all the air out of the room (pun) will be the first pushed out of the airlock. People like that never make it to the next frontier.
Why in the hell would you ask someone to “take a photo” and then say it’s unforgivable when they take just one photo? You know, exactly what you just asked them to do? “How dare you follow instructions!” If you want them to take multiple, ask for multiple. Is it that hard to actually say what you mean? You can’t just expect people to guess what you actually mean without any indication whatsoever.
Wait, so that is why the used phone I bought has 2 worn-out sections on the screen. One looks like a vertical swipe and the other looks like a tap. So I bought a used Instagram phone. I have been wondering about it for a whole year now.
I really think Pornhub should start a competitor to youtube. They have the resources and the infrastructure and software. Call it youhub or something. Market it as TH-cam as it was. A free platform for free people. Etc Etc.
Gif is like gift, not like Jif peanut butter. I don't buy that the G's sound has to match the one in General Image Format, because that's not a rule that acronyms follow. CERT is pronounced like certificate, even though the C comes from computer. Same with CREB, CUNY, TEST and TIP.
Wizmut I think the pronouncing style of Jif doesn’t really come from that stylistic choice, but rather from the creator of the format expressing that to be the pronunciation. Personally, not being a native english speaker, I use Gif when speaking on my native language and (usually) jif when speaking in english, depending on which pronunciation sounds better in the sentence. It is annoying to not have a 100% knowledge on which is correct.

Videos like this during the podcast make me wonder: Are the other Tims missing out on vital podcast character by not seeing this?
Luke Andrew I’d count myself as one. Wouldn’t have thought to look at the YT version until the gifs were mentioned...
Oh god, those gifs (pronounced "gifs") are so much worse than you two described.
They make me feel like it is from some sort of weird kid show.

"Will dab on Moon for money"
"She's one of the Olsens twins" 🙄😅🤣🤣🤣
18:36 What Grey's talking about here is known as "ambient awareness".
It was like when Mr crabs fired Patric even when he didn't work for him.
I'm one of those who takes 1 photo and hands the camera back, but in my defense I never take pictures for myself.
We don’t have a problem with plastic. We have a problem with waste management. And yes, plastic is a fantastic material for the right application.
The jarring loop bothers me so much to even see in the corner of my eye while I work.
Have you guys seen the safety video of Level? It’s novel but quite nice and minimalist.

On second thought, the gif itself is also silent, so maybe that's appropriate.
