    When I replay memories in my head I can actually replay them in full third person as if I've got a free cam and can move around the room, and yes Brady that means I can see the back of my head. However, I say that with the caveat that I know that to some degree that makes the memory less accurate but sometimes that's the point. Any time you repeat a memory you're not actually picking up a DVD of the events, you're picking up a floppy disk of the events using a magnet. The mere act of replaying a memory in your head will subtly change it and degrade the quality. If you've been through trauma then that can be a good thing. I developed this skill as a way of projecting into my traumatic memories as the person who I wish was there to help me. I sit there and hold her hand, comfort her, talk to her, encourage her--I give the past version of me hope and that change ripples forward. I know that that doesn't objectively change my past but it gives me the ability to face living on.

    My family had a talk about how we remember things. Turns out we all remember in different ways
    I remember in pretty much black and white slide show where I don't see things move but frame by frame almost like a comic, but the sound is crystal clear and comes out perfectly. Also like Brady in first person.
    My sister remembers in complete animation and color where she visualizes everything around her like Grey, but no sound at all. She knows when a sound happens and what it sounds like, but can't hear it in her mind.
    My brother visualizes things in a logistical sense. where he has a set scene and he knows what's there. Sounds and visuals are the same in his regard and when he remembers things sounds and visuals are just put where they belong. He neither hears sounds or sees anything moving.
    We spent a full 2 days talking about this a year or two ago. Made me realize really how different everyone thinks from each other.

    Memories are hardly memories at all, you're just reconstructing them off the vague, unspecific sense you have of the memory. I've come to realise this especially when it comes to remembering dreams, because dreams are so ephemeral, it's clear to me that by the end of a given day, my memory of a dream I had that morning is not my memory of the dream, but my memory of my attempts to recall the dream. My brain is making do with what little it has to hand, it's like loss of quality in photocopies, with each pass, my memory reinforces what it thinks it is while also being undeniably further from the source. It might result in something that feels fairly robust, but at the same time stuff I know I can't remember is missing.

  • @johntomblin
    @johntomblin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @24:00 My memories feel more like a word bubble with concepts in it. I barely visualize stuff at all nevermind perfectly from a first-person perspective. Maybe sometimes I'll remember some "snapshots" but nothing too long or detailed. Like I remember my friends' wedding fairly well but only in that I could tell you who I talked to, who was there, what the decor was like and maybe a rough idea of the order things happened in. Nothing close to a first person video though, it feels more like a miniature model that's just been loosely formed from my experiences.

  • @sanosuke1589
    @sanosuke1589 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Grey! You've got to go down the rabbit hole of Aphantasia; very much appropriate for the conversation about what you "see" when recalling mental images. Those with Aphantasia cannot get a "tangible" visual, and it's more of an abstract thought like you describe.
    I'm 30 and recently discovered that I am affected by Aphantasia, and it explains so much about how my thought processes work. Yes, I have dreams, but I don't get much out of reading. Reading feels like a chore for me, where my friends describe it more like a movie playing in their head. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

    My best way of describing how I remember my past is:
    I remember things as a mock up video of an ideas' script?
    Like there are times when I'm aware the video is flailing in all sorts of PoVs that don't make sense (like my hand's pov wtf ☠️) just to represent the script better (like "I grabbed a pen on top of the table")
    To me there is little to no resistance between any forms of representation of the memory so it all feels consistent and it's quite easy to remember it in terms of ideas or 1st person pov or the two or something else so I never question why or how this came to be
    But when it comes to speaking to others about how I see memories in my head, it used to always mess with me then because any given example is nearly always cut off by a counter example (so I start up as 1st person pov if given that suggestion, then 3rd person if suggested this instead, then as abstract ideas if questionned about it)

    Point of clarification, a plant based diet is only a small part of veganism, to be vegan also demands that you don't even buy items (like shoes, cars, etc.) which were made in a way which harms animals. In other words, to be vegan is to go even further off that end of the spectrum than just a plant based diet.

    But what if the memory fundamentally involves "replaying the tape". For example, say we were standing in a road of some sort with lamp posts running down both sides. Each lamp post is painted a different color. I ask you to stand at a point in the road and look down the road at the posts. You then have to close your eyes, wait a bit, then recollect the order of the colors of the lamp posts that you were able to see. From farthest in your peripheral vision, and moving inwards. If you want to remember that you have to look back and see what your own eyes saw.

I don't think that humans are innately any better than animals, but saying that it is a moral wrong to eat meat supposes that we are better than animals is many ways. So then why would it be wrong to eat meat if we were so much better than them? So if we are the same as animals eating them isn't really wrong, it's just part of the way that the natural world works, it's just energy transfer. And if we are better than animals, then why in the hell should their suffering even really matter to us?

    Why did they mention that this podcast had a low chance of reaching us? Did I miss something or is it just the technical difficulties in the begging.

    I really want to write a letter, just in case i meet Brady. Not a normal letter but it would be as cryptic and obtuse as i can make it; possibly even adding some sort of cipher and i will give it to him and it will just ask for a hot stopper.

    _Skyscraper_ is even better in Norwegian, because the very lazy translation is _skyskraper._ However, _sky_ in Norwegian means _cloud,_ so a _skyskraper_ is really called a _cloudscraper._

    Grey! Google Aphantasia!
    Not everyone even sees clear images in their mind's eye.
    My whole mind's eye is just blank blackness and the only way I can recall is in more of a non-image way, but instead a list of thoughts of what happened that plays through my head. Though that's not the best explanation of it, but akin to that.
    A classic test for this is to try to visualize a red apple in your mind's eye. Some people will find this simple as can be and will be able to freely change the color to green or yellow or even purple or black. They'll be able to move it around and affect it like they could a real apple in the normal world.
    Others might be able to picture an outline only or nothing at all.
    If ya ever heard someone say "Picture a scenic beach" and you just didn't understand what the fuck they meant? It's cause ya got aphantasia.

      I wonder if visualizing words uses the same part of the brain as visualizing objects. I know people who can do everything you've mentioned about the apple but visualizing the word apple is difficult for them.

    Don't blame the battery Brady, just admit you were powerless to avoid buying it.
