Bright Sheng: Nanking! Nanking! A Threnody for Pipa and Orchestra (2000)

Bright Sheng (n. 1955) is one of the foremost Chinese composers of this generation. A product of the Cultural Revolution, he pursued his musical education in the USA and acquired double nationality after the country reopened its gates to the world by the late 1970’s. His works are widely appreciated thanks to his neo-lyric, neoromantic approach to music. If Schoenberg’s Survivor from Warsaw should have a companion piece, it is Sheng’s Nanking! Nanking! ; a threnody written in memory of the 300 000 victims of the Nanking massacre, perpetrated by the Japanese invaders during the Sino-Japanese War in 1937.

Producto de la Revolución Cultural, prosiguió su educación en EUA y adquirió la doble nacionalidad tras la reapartura de China al mundo a fines de la década de 1970. Sus obras son altamente apreciadas por su toque musical neo-lírico y neorromántico. Si Un sobreviviente de Varsovia de Schoenberg tuviera un espejo, este sería el ¡Nankín! ¡Nankín! de Sheng, una elegía compuesta en memoria de las 300 mil víctimas de la masacre de Nankín, perpetrada por el invasor japonés durante la guerra sino-japonesa en 1937.
