The problem is that the scoring system values difficulty much more than it values artistry, and Kim's program was relatively safe: Of the top 3, she was the only one whose "base points" were below 60 (and all the athletes have complete control over what their base points are-so she knew going in that she would have a deficit) ... so she made up a lot with artistry, but not enough.

    The Sochi scandal produced one of the most controversial moments in figure skating history. t’s like watching the great boxing legend Mohammed Ali knock a competitor out and losing the match. It was this ridicules. Adelina did have 1 more triple than Yuna, but Yuna had 1 more double than Adelina which makes the total jump rotation a difference of only 1 rotation. Yuna had 2-triple Lutz jumps in her routine, Adelina attepmted 1 and had a wrong edge which means she tecnically had 0 Triple Lutz.
    The GOE (Grade of Execution) is given from a scale of -3 to +3 for each element. This is where Yuna Kim would excel as her jumps had better height, dept and speed throughout. But it appears the judges gave Adelina positive GOE for the error in the Lutz and the step out in the combination which makes no sense at all. Adelina scored more +3 than Yuna, Mao and Carolina combined. One element where Adelina should get slightly higher marks would be the spins. Adelina spins are terrific as he shows great flexibility and speed. Her spins are innovated and mesmerizing to watch. The 3 spins Adelina performed had a base value of 9.4 points, but Yuna was also 9.4. The Spins are one element that Adelina has an edge over Yuna but the base values are the same and this wouldn’t play a factor because Yuna Kim trumps Adelina in the other departments: Jumps, Skating Skills, Transitions, Performance, Choreography and Interpretation. With a huge advantage, it’s clearly easy to see why Yuna Kim should have had a higher score and claimed her 2nd Olympic gold medal.

      Apparently, Adelina facial expressed more emotion in her freeskate compared to Yuna is what some may say. Adelina clearly did not have a perfect freekskate while Yuna was near perfection. And Yuna expressed her emotion through her skating without all the extra gimmicks/distractions, yet, some say it was 'boring'.
      As for the controversial results, "this is just happens in figure skating" some have said. Well, if this is what typically happens in figure skating, then thank you for reminding me why I've lost interest and in respect in this sport.

    • @LiVeLiKeURdying2
      @LiVeLiKeURdying2 10 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      CANDICE PERKINS No, Yuna's expression was within her skating. She didn't need all that add'l gimicks or distractions. She simply skated with a more subtle passion, poetry, and flawless beauty. A different type of entertainment--almost reminding and telling the story of the lost art/meaning in figure skating.
      Adelina freeskated purely to entertain which I was for a moment, but it was Kim Yuna's performance that I will remember for ages (for the right reason) and remember Adelina (for the wrong reason) as one of the most controversial I've seen. This Olympics in figure skating could've been one of the most memorable, but unfortunately, it's been tainted by the inflated results.
      This is a case of where QUANTITY of jumps tarnished the QUALITY in figure skating. Such a shame.

    There is no doubt that Adelina is a marvellous, very promising young girl. but the questions that still remain a month after the competition.
    1.How has Sotnikova's PCS increased by a total of almost 20 points (counting both short and free skates) in a space of 2months?
    2. Why didn't judges mark wrong edge on her FLUTZ(Wrong edge)
    3.That her 3T was under-rotated by 1/4 or 1/2 was visible even to the naked eye without the slow-motion replay. And as has been pointed out above, there should have been further deduction for her wrong edge along with the deduction for the under-rotation. Instead she was awarded plus GOE for the combination. Furthermore, 3T requires skaters to use the toe pick during the take off. Instead, Sotnikova used the full blade to jump off the ice?
    a completely wrong and improper jumping technique.
    4.She stepped out of the double loop and two-footed the landing. It seriously disrupted the flow of the jump. In addition, her rotation in the air was shaky. According to guidelines given by ISU, such mistake (two footed landing in particular) merits -2 to -3 level of GOE. But the penalty given was only at -0.9. Even if the judges had decided that -2 level of GOE would be sufficient, the point deducted would have been at least 1.4.
    5.How did she get the step level 4 in both short and free programs?(while Yuna got level 3. It should have been completely opposite)
    6.How was her low-grade flip awarded the higher GOE than Yuna's
    7. Only 1.44 difference in the base value! It is the actual execution of those jumps and judges’ perception of their quality that determine the marks, not the plan on the paper. It has already been said that Sotnikova’s executions of technical elements were not the cleanest on the night. But GOE given to her is something you would see given to perfectly executed elements.

    So Kim Yuna skated perfectly so she’s in 2nd place, Carolina Kostner and Gracie Gold skated with their heart and without any errors and they get third and fourth.... So Adelina Sotnikova has a flat edge on a Flutz, two feet landing, under rotations and skated ‘ok’ and gets first. Not to mention the Gala horror. And people are okay with this? Why don’t we do something to ban ISU?

      권은정 No, Yuna should get the bronze medal. She landed only SIX triples and the second Lutz was really underrotated. You wanting or not, Adelina had a harder program than Yuna, and the only mistake was in a 2Lo, so the silver medal woud be fair. I'm not fan of Carolina Kostner, but she was the most perfect in the Olys. Her FS, aside Mao Asada, was the most difficult and she executed perfectly. She should get the GOLD medal, not Yuna. And Yuna's jumps aren't so good as in Vancouver, she lost height and ice coverage. Adelina Sotnikova has good jumps yes, her jumps have a monstrous height and are good rotated. Let's be real, both of them are good and Yuna didn't fall from heaven.

    • @Serena416
      @Serena416 9 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      André C. B. I'm sorry, Adelina's Lutz was jumped in wrong edge which was INSIDE EDGE FOR SURE, and the second 3T was under-rotated definitely. And a single mistake must make huge deduction of PCS which she did not. There's no way to describe her score gap between European Champ and the Olympic game. Adelina is NOTHING W/OUT RUSSIAN FEDERATION. By the way, Adelina has one of the terrible jump position ever just like Mao's. However, I do agree that Carolina deserves to be the champion. If that event wasn't hosted in Russia, Adelina would probably be in around 5th place or something, the same to Lipnitskaya.

    • @acpzt

      Serena416 Yuna Kim doesn't deserve gold and did a weak program for the level of the competition, it's all. Adelina Sotnikova won like Yuna won in Vancouver with a shocking inflated score (Yuna Kim FS Pesonal Best before Vancouver: 133.95. After Vancouver: 150.06). And, sorry,but Mao Asada has one of the most beautiful rotations in the air and her edge jumps are perfectly executed.

    Unfortunately, figure skating is now (see NBC's reviews) just about "attempting" more jumps so perhaps they should just get rid of component scores and grade of execution.

    Here we are once again watching the corruption of judging on the biggest international stage of figure skating! The correct ladies ended up on the podium, but the order needs to be reconsidered. Adelina showed a lot of athletic talent and major potential for more great things to come. She was totally worthy of a bronze medal, and considering the talented veterans and youngsters she was up against, that's a great achievement. With Yuna, Carolina, and Mao looking to retire, we needs great young talent like Adelina (and Julia, Gracie, ect.) to carry on the sport. And I really don't want to rag on Sontikova too much for her annoying yet totally predicable attitude when it comes to her gold medal (if you want to compare her post olympic interviews about her controversial win to that of athletes involved in any other sport in similar situations, Adelina was actually pretty polite, even at her worst), but I fear that the same type of corrupt judging that we saw in Sochi will keep her from winning big contests outside of Russia when she is ready to demonstrate gold level skating. What a ridiculous waste, all around! I love figure skating, but the ISU needs to fix this issue, because it's been out of control for far too long, and new new judging system seems to making the component inflating, which is one of the easiest places for judges to cheat, worse than ever.

    • @livininspokane
      @livininspokane 10 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      If you haven't already read it, former ISU rule maker, referee, critic of the new judging system, and fighter of corruption in judging, Sonia Bianchetti Garbato, has written a great short essay on the subject of the 2014 Olympic games that I suggest people read. It's a level headed bit of fresh air in the face of this competition, which has stirred up quite a bit of emotion. It's similar to the now famous Dick Button tweet, but it goes into a bit more detail:
      www.soniabianchetti.com/writings_sochi2014.html
      I'd also recommend reading her bit on the Europeans, which gives the hint that geo-political bias was to rear it's ugly head in Sochi as it has in so many major figure skating events before it:
      "In Budapest, it was a general opinion among many coaches, officials and judges that Carolina was definitely undermarked. There is no doubt that both Julia and Adelina are marvelous, very promising young girls, technically fantastic, but at a sidereal distance from Carolina as far as the interpretation of the music, the body movement and the choreography are concerned."
      www.soniabianchetti.com/writings_europeans2014.html
      Actually, I recommend all her writings, she has a great insight on this sport.

    Then Yuna Kim's short program was more difficult than Sotnikova . And the score was almost same. How do you explain this based on your 'difficult program' theory? Yuna Kim didn't make a mistake. (long&short program) And what about Mao Asada? She did 3A and triple combo in her FS) Should she won the free program? No,
    Figure skating is not Jumping competetion. In terms of jumps, the russian's technic is coarse though.
    The one thing you have to know is that a lot of successive gold medalist won the competition without many jumps than silver medalist. The Important thing is not the quantity but the quality of jump!

Both of Caro's programs were fantastic and are definitely the highlight of her career, as is Mao's free, but unfortunately her short wasn't clean. Yuna had amazing skates that were both clean and elegant but they weren't as energetic and expressive as her Vancouver performances and they weren't more enjoyable that Caro and Mao's short and free for me personally. Gracie Gold has amazing jumps and is overall a very powerful skater, so my top 3 would be: 1. Caro, 2. Yuna, 3. Between Mao and Gracie, but most likely goes to Mao because I don't think the mistakes on her short are enough to discredit that incredible free.

    We are not blind. Even though it has been years already, we still know that Yuna Kim was the real winner. "There was slight miscue in the end." Comment by the speaker for Adelina Sotnikova.

    Yuna were supposed to be alongside Sonja and Katarina, being the third woman in the history of FS to win a gold medal defending her title, Carolina were supposed to get her silver and Gracie were supposed to get her bronze, but thanks to the Russia's corruption this was destroyed... What a shame.

    For the benefit of all confused writers on this topic as well as for the general public let me clarify once and for all the facts concerning the scoring and show why Yuna Kim should have won gold. I will only address the scoring for the free program, although the scoring for the short program was also highly dubious and has attracted a lot of criticism.
    As is common knowledge, the free program score for each skater is the sum of their TES (technical element score) and their PCS (program component score), the two scores carrying roughly equal weight. The TES in turn is the sum of the base difficulty value for each of the twelve technical elements, e.g. a triple Lutz and the corresponding GOE (grade of execution) score.
    Now, each of the nine judges awards a grade, an integer from -3 to +3 for each technical element reflecting the quality of the execution. For every technical element, each of these values carries a specific numerical value, as determined by the ISU SoV (Scale of Value) chart. The highest and the lowest values are then discarded and the average is taken of the remaining seven values. This average is the GOE score for the element.
    Yuna Kim's TES comprised of a base difficulty score of 57.49 and a GOE score of 12.20 giving a total TES of 69.69. Adelina Sotnikova's base difficulty score of 61.43 and GOE score of 14.11 gave a total TES of 75.54. Before we start delving into the details of the scoring, we must mention that Kim's base score should have been higher to begin with. More details will be found below.
    Let's begin with Adelina's triple Lutz- triple toeloop (3L+3T) jump combination which was her first technical element of the program. A review has shown that she made an incorrect entry. It should have been made with a back outside edge, but hers wasn't (skaters call the mistake a "flutz"). This error carries a mandatory -0.7 GOE score but in fact she received a GOE score of +1.00. It turns out that one of the judges even gave her a base GOE score of +3.00 (remember that +3 is the highest GOE grade that can be awarded for each technical element). Furthermore, the second jump in the combination was under-rotated by more than a 1/4 turn. By ISU rules this means that the base value of the element should have been reduced by 30%, in this case by 1.80 points.
    Next, we recall that Sotnikova messed up the triple flip-double toeloop-double loop combination in the middle of her routine for which she received a 0.90 GOE deduction. ISU rules stipulate that a step-out (in this case a stumble) carries a mandatory unscaled 2 point deduction translating to a 1.40 GOE deduction. So we realise that she received 0.50 points more than she ought to have for the error, notwithstanding the fact that her wildly tilted axis of rotation for the double loop should have incurred an extra GOE penalty. So for the two jump combinations, Sotnikova received at least 4.00 GOE points MORE than she ought to have and this even before we begin the head-to-head comparisons of the technical elements.
    Be that as it may, we know that she received a GOE score of 14.01 for the remaining ten technical elements of the program. This is 2.81 points more than Yuna's GOE score for ALL of her twelve technical elements COMBINED. Except for the 3L+3T, NONE of the comparable jumps yielded Yuna a higher GOE score. This is very strange, as we recall that she executed them all flawlessly and especially as her jumps were cleaner with better mid air positioning and travelled further as well as being generally around 10cm higher off the ice than the Russian's. In the triple flip Adelina received a GOE of +1.50 whereas Yuna received only +1.20. It is worth noting that in this jump the Russian pre-rotated by nearly 180 degrees whereas the Korean did not pre-rotate at all, a fact which should have resulted in a swing of GOE points in the latter's favour.
    In the triple Salchow, Adelina received a GOE of +1.20 whereas Yuna received +0.90. Replay shows that Adelina's jump was again rather poor, hardly rising above the ice. For the double axel, Adelina received a GOE of +1.07, whereas Yuna received +0.79, this in spite of the Korean jumping towards the end of the program for which there is a 10% GOE bonus. For the layback spin, Adelina received a GOE of +1.07, with Yuna receiving +0.64. For the change foot combination spin, Adelina received a GOE of +1.21, with Yuna receiving only +0.71.
    No right thinking person would therefore deny that Yuna's GOE scores in all of the above categories should at the very least match the Russian's, if not exceed by a significant margin. Even if we are extremely generous to Adelina and we match the GOE scores for the comparable elements above, simple arithmetic shows that Yuna's TES should already be increased by at least 1.81points.
    Furthermore, Yuna received a LOWER GOE for the triple Lutz- triple toeloop combination (+1.60) than in all of her previous international competitions. As was clear to see, it was executed perfectly. It merited a GOE of at least +2.00 as it has done throughout her career. It is also worth noting that in the choreographed sequence for which they both received +1.50, the Russian almost lost her balance towards the end.
    Let us now consider the step sequence GOE marks for which Adelina received +1.70 (level 4) and Yuna +1.14 (level 3). Now, this is where the rigging truly came into its own and I will explain why later. For each of the non-jump elements, the panel decides the level of difficulty, which is an integer between 1 and 4. Now a higher level earns a higher base difficulty score. However, in the case of the step sequence, a higher level not only earns a higher base score but crucially, also a HIGHER GOE. Let me be more specific- suppose one step sequence is deemed to be a level 3 and another a level 4. An award of +3 GOE grade to both attempts in fact translates to +2.1 GOE points for the latter but only +1.5 GOE for the former and +2 GOE grade translates to +1.4 GOE and +1.0 GOE respectively. It turns out that Yuna was given only a level 3 whereas Adelina a level 4. This was also highly questionable- even a casual observer would have noticed that the Russian was somewhat shaky in her footwork and noticeably less assured than the Korean.
    Impartial judges would have therefore, at the very minimum, awarded Yuna with the same level and the GOE score as her Russian counterpart for the step sequence.
    With all of the above points taken into consideration, simple arithmetic shows that Yuna's TES should have been increased by at least 2.97 points. Add to this the further mandatory 4.00 Base Value point deduction Adelina's should have received for the jump errors and we end up with a total swing of 6.97 points.
    Now, the difference in the final scores between the two skaters was 5.48 points. Hence merely on the basis of a minimal correction to the TES alone, Yuna Kim should have been crowned as Olympic champion.
    Next, consider the PCS (program component score) which evaluates the artistic merit of the program. Five categories are assessed: skating skills, transition, performance/execution, choreography and interpretation. Each is marked out of 10, averaged and then multiplied by a factor of 1.6. Sotnikova scored an average of 9.30 out of 10 to give a PCS of 74.41, including a mark of 9.50 for choreography. This is compared to Yuna Kim's PCS of 74.50. Again, any impartial observer will agree that Yuna Kim's performance in all of the five categories above was of a far superior quality, especially in the choreography and interpretation sections. That Sotnikova got to within 0.09 of Kim in the PCS is simply ludicrous.
    Let me finish by addressing the one unresolved question alluded to above, namely how is it possible that Kim's base difficulty TES score for the step sequence was manipulated. The answer lies not with the judges but with the technical controller and his two assistants who ALONE have the authority to set the difficulty level of the spins, the step and the spiral sequences. It turns out that the controller was a Russian, Alexander Lakernik, who was the former vice president of the Russian figure skating federation and that the assistant technical specialist was a former Russian, Olga Baranova, who apparently just so happened to be a former skating coach of Sotnikova.
    So all this leads to just one inescapable conclusion- that Yuna Kim was robbed of her rightful Olympic gold medal in Sochi. And such has been the subtlety and skill with which the scoring was massaged that many commentators have yet to grasp exactly how the manipulation took place.
