- A fun and super delicious Italian Sweet Bread. Make your own shapes and colours and get lost in the amazing smell and crazy good taste of fresh baked sweet bread.
✿ INGREDIENTS ✿
Eggs - 6 for the flour; 1 for the optional egg wash, and several coloured eggs for the optional easter decor.
Sugar - 10 tablespoons, just over half cup.
Olive Oil - 6 tablespoons.
Yeast - 1 tablespoon mixed in 4 ounces of lukewarm water,
Flour - 4 1/2 To 5 cups of flour (save some for kneading and rolling
Vanilla extract - 1 teaspoon
Lemon zest - use 1 lemon
✿ DIRECTIONS ✿
Optional; prep you Easter eggs by colouring raw eggs using your preferred method. The eggs will cook in the oven during the baking period.
Prep the yeast by adding the yeast to 4 OZ of lukewarm water, stir and set aside.
In a large bowl add eggs sugar and oil and beat with an electric mixer until nicely combined.
Add to the prepared yeast to the egg mixture
Start adding the flour slowly (leaving about one cup to be worked into the dough later)
Add in the lemon zest and the vanilla extract
Put a little flour on the counter and finish working the dough and using up the rest of the flour. Note you will need to work the dough for about 5 minutes, so get ready for a workout. Nonna's got muscles!
Once the dough is smooth and not too sticky, start shaping your bread and place it on a large parchment lined baking sheet, check out Nonna’s nice shapes and technique.
Cover the formed dough shapes with plastic wrap
Let the dough rise for one hour covered. Watch the whole video to see Nonna’s cool tip for making the dough rise faster!
Optional; Nonna recommends an egg wash and adding the whole coloured eggs, sesame seeds and easter sprinkles. Watch Nonna on how to do this!
Bake at 350° for 12 to 15 minutes.

Did you allow the dough to do a first rise, then punch it down? Or go right into your braids?
Hello - the dough should rise for one hour. Enjoy!
First make the braids, then let it rise for one hour.
