Tariffs cause inflation....inflation is a tax. As a Canadian that supported Trump's return with the hopes that it would end the ridiculous wars that have sprung up since Vietnam, I am bewildered. "Canada doesn't treat us very well" Mr Trump says. The fact is, if you remove the energy we supply from the equation, you would find that we actually buy more American goods than we sell into the US. About the energy: We supply around 40% of the oil that goes into American refineries that are designed for heavy oil. The reconfiguration of these refineries is economically unviable, and the US has to export their "sweet" oil because of this. We sell our oil to the US at a 20% discount to world prices; Think about that. "Canada doesn't treat us very well" Yes, Mr Trump, we do and it is we who are subsidizing you, not the other way around as you profess. Additionally, we offer the US energy security that allows them to play their endless war games in the middle east without worrying about another oil embargo as experienced in the 70's. As for the drugs: Last year all the fentanyl that was seized at the border for the entire year would fit into one suitcase and was being smuggled into the US by American citizens. The fact is this has nothing to do with trade, drugs or illegal immigration and everything to do with imperialism. Mr Trump wants Canada and stated such. he openly stated he would use massive economic pressure to get it. I am not opposed to a closer economic relationship with the US but I am strongly opposed to any agreement that exposes our citizens the predatory American medical system or the daily mass shootings that come with all the guns. The credibility loss the US government is experiencing is huge as it stabs its closest ally and largest trading partner in back on the world stage. Moreover, this move by the US is a breach of the free trade agreement Mr Trump negotiated himself, and this is for the second time. The free trade agreement was negotiated in good faith and this breach will end up in front of a judge someday. I'm sure it won't mean anything and the US won't accept the verdict. Canada needs to build more pipelines to the sea starting today, not tomorrow or the next day: TODAY. We need seek business with countries that aren't at war with themselves where, every four years the political polar shift evokes economic schizophrenia. We need to outlaw US NGO's from paying protesters of every type inside our borders that seek to prevent or delay these initiatives. Although, if an initiative looked viable I would expect a big push to bring "Freedom and Democracy" to Canada bringing with it, everything this narrative has brought to so many other countries around the world. True were the words of Henry Kissinger, "It may be dangerous to be America's enemy, but to be America's friend is fatal."
Quoting Kissinger is pointless, he was a master war criminal who didn't give a damn about American lives, ref: The Mayaguez Incident; last battle of the Vietnam War.
No more discount. Sell them oil at a regular price or even add 10% to that. Plus, they will pay their own tariff for importing it. FYI: Trump was never smart or anti-establishment. He just says sometimes populist things but he’s the same old Republican Party. He’s paid and backed by the same people.
Trump asked Canada to do something/anything about the fentanyl arriving in Canada and being sent to the US as street drugs and knock-off pills. Rather than offend their bosses in Bejing the Canadian government has devised a clever way to have a trade war with the USA. Now every turd in Canada thinks the media is honest and the politicians are trustworthy.
I'm still waiting for the price drop that he promised, and Trump voters believe him. 😂 It looks like Trump voters have a lot of money now, I don't hear them complaining about prices anymore while eggs skyrocketed.
Trump is to blame for all of this. But he is not smart enough to understand everything, so someone else must have thought this up, someone who will not be affected by this. I will boycott everything I can that comes from any Republican state.
As a European I am so sorry to hear this. I love America, but this is going to cause so much harm in the relationship between the countries of the west. It is only a matter of time before Trump does the same for goods coming from the EU.
Canada should add a 100% on Tesla and start importing Chinese EVs. We can import all we need from Asia and Europe, especially China for a portion of the price. Canada should also Cut the import of oil and power to the states and start selling to europe instead. That will teach Trump a lesson.

US/Canada trade deficit was as low as 11 billions under Trump's first term. Under Biden, the deficit rose massively to more than 78 billions a year. This is cheating, destroying American companies and hard working American jobs, in addition to the illegals and fentanyl that has killed thousands of Americans. This is wrong. Canada is not a good friend, cheating on Americans.
So why don’t you move there?
If Trump wants to stop the use of Fentanyl by Americans, maybe he needs to educate the American people of the dangers of Fentanyl and punish Big Pharma and Doctors for prescribing these addictive drugs to patients. Tariffs would NOT solve the problem.

You supported a very corrupt man. The US is in no war we have been supporting Ukraine because it's the right thing to do.
Quoting Kissinger is pointless, he was a master war criminal who didn't give a damn about American lives, ref: The Mayaguez Incident; last battle of the Vietnam War.
You supported Trump's return. No need to read past that.
No more discount. Sell them oil at a regular price or even add 10% to that. Plus, they will pay their own tariff for importing it. FYI: Trump was never smart or anti-establishment. He just says sometimes populist things but he’s the same old Republican Party. He’s paid and backed by the same people.
