The football and ice hockey mini games were indeed brilliant. However, it wasn't quite the first ever Rocket League type multiplayer game on the N64. Buck Bumble was. This was 2nd and Excitebike 64 was third.
One of my all time favorite N64 games. Playing local multiplayer in the mini games like hockey was absolutely amazing. I loved this game so much growing up.
monster trucks are notoriously hard to drive, they have two sets of steering wheels and separate brakes for individual tires even sometimes . while i imagine the devs wanted to simulate actual monster truck driving, to your point, monster truck races typically aren’t on long winding paths
I used to play the heck out of this game on PC back when MSN had the Gaming Zone. You could race and do rumbles which was basically a king of the hill type thing. Plus there were tons of custom trucks and tracks you could download. The PC version didn't have powerups but it did have a settings screen where you could change tires and gearbox ratios for more speed/acceleration and handling.
YES! I did this too! All kinds of mods and trucks and tracks. I remember loving a mortal kombat map where the original Techno Syndrome pumped away. Great memories. Shame the N64 port was so bad...
Yup, really miss racing with Nicky Frate, KC Vales, and a bunch of others from the forums back in the day. Dirt and Grommit (dev's of 4x4 Evo) were pretty fun too but lack of ability to make custom trucks/tracks kind of killed that game
Monster Truck Madness 2 on PC was one of the best racing games in the late 90s. So many modded trucks in those days. Hundreds. lol The announcer is Army Armstrong who was the voice of monster truck races in the late 80s until the mid 2000s. The N64 version is bad, but highly recommend the PC version.
This game had some sort of promotional deal with WCW. I played a version of it on PC that featured little cut scenes with the wrestlers that some trucks are named after.
The neat part is it just seems that way because THAB keeps getting a bunch of consecutive relatively boring games-- *the n64 actually just has a ton of all sorts of creative games, of many different genres. Unlike the ps5 pro, which is a giant waste of money for stupid bullshit and no games. I would rather buy ANOTHER n64 than anything new these days.*
I do think there was an explosion of racing games on the N64, because it has full 3D graphics. Like, in the NES days, you either went for the "treadmill" method, where the road comes at you and you slide a bit to the left and right but there isn't really a "track," like how it was done in _Rad Racer_ or _Outrun,_ or you had an isometric view, which allowed for actual tracks with "real" turns and stuff, but control was a tad awkward because of the view. When the SNES came out, you could do Mode 7, which I gather was hard to program for, because there weren't many games made that used it. Later in the SNES life cycle there were some fully 3D games like _Stunt Race FX._ But then the N64 comes along and you can easily make a full 3D area that you can drive around in, without resorting to any "tricks."
This game was aqesome. I loved it as a kid and as i prefer realistic racing games, I had no issues with the controls. You just gotta be patient. I find those kind of games so much more fun to play than games where you dont have to brake to turn corners. You forgot to mention the summit rumble game which you have to knock the other trucks off the platform. You can play it wirh computers. It was great fun.
Lolz, I used the shell of my copy of that game as a donor for my Majoras Mask cartridge. The "gold" plastic shell those came out with as default was brittle as hell, man. By the time I was old enough to do something about it, it was half disintegrating, overexposing the cartridge's internals. It was hilarious comparing the hefty internals of the MM cassette vs the very bare bones Monster Truck ones.
1:27 Yes, Hogan a monster truck and yes, he did have a monster truck battle with the Giant which ended with the Giant getting thrown off a roof top (long story).
So it looks like some of the trucks were named after wrestlers, not just Hogan. The Hitman, Outsiders, and Stinger all seemed to be references to Brett "the Hitman" Hart, Scott Hall and Kevin Nash were called the Outsiders as a tag team I think, and the Stinger literally has Sting's face on it lol.
Man... back in the day my, dad bought a new PC "only for school" purposes but, while browsing through the files, I found Monster Truck Madness 2 (which is the equivalent to this one) and Motocross Madness demos. I cannot tell you how many hours my brother and I squeezed out of these demos, despite it not being full games. And no, we didn't get the full versions becuase my parents didn't want us playing on the computer lol. So much fun, such good memories.
Thab! You just gotta learn that racing games are not about holding down the accelerator all race. Let go of gas. Brake into your turn. Then punch the gas pedal coming out of your turn. I know it’s easier said than done. But I can only watch you struggle for so long on racing games lol
he refuses assistance so don’t think that’ll happen. disappointed to see him cheat to get to the end, especially after suffering thru so many mahjong and sports games
Also this was the sequel of the original Monster Truck Madness but since it was only ported the n64 they had to just add the 64 so nobody would know it was a sequel.

You have to let go off the gas when your on the air until you land, then after landing you give it the beans! And there you go! Much easier to control.
We use to get random highlights of monster trucks in the uk in the 90s. I remember Bigfoot and gravedigger being the “best trucks”. I think wcw must of had some sort of sponsorship deal with the outsiders and hogan trucks
I felt the pain just by watching. It’s a shame that big studios didn’t give the N64 a proper game and went with generic racing and fighting games. The next one will be painful too.
The physics actually seem quite sophisticated for the time, and the graphics seem quite good too, with a higher and more consistent than normal frame-rate, but the actual implementation of the physics, control, and overall gameplay seems undercooked to say the least. It seems clear that they had some good people working on the game, but that the development cycle was unnecessarily rushed. It's hard to understate just how important it is for a game to be carefully polished before releasing it, and this seems like something game publishers STILL don't understand. But, it's also a matter of not spending enough time experimenting with gameplay concepts and tweaking gameplay concepts, which you often need to do before spending lots of time on coding, making models and maps, and animation. Goldeneye was released super late, way after the movie had been released, and that's precisely why it was such a great game. They re-thought the whole concept of how the game would play at least once during that process (for a while it was conceived of as a rail shooter similar to time-cop). Seeing collision physics with that bus wreck was very unexpected and way ahead of its time, but, the N64's CPU was actually extremely powerful for the time period, so it's not totally surprising that it was possible to do stuff like that. Its CPU was actually significantly more powerful than it needed to be for most if not all games. It had a very good GPU for the time as well (not actually called a "GPU"). Unfortunately, the design of the memory bus and the latency with communicating with the GPU held back the potential of the system quite a bit.
