They sound different in front of the kit than they do behind is so true. My hats are a late 70’s hollow logo zildjian new beat bottom with a 90’s new beat top. Which means they’re much closer in weight because the new beats got heavier as the decades went on (more mass means more volume). Anyways, I’ve never really liked them until I started recording and heard them on playback and, they’re actually pretty amazing.
Nice Tim! I liked the bit toward the end about the brilliant finish. You should create an episode about the differences between your different finishes-both the process and what it does to the sound.
Great work, Timothy! Love the commissioned pair with that zesty shimmer…to my ear and memory they sound somewhat like the Prism series hi-hats you have demonstrated. Regarding the second pair, maybe heed your instincts, and make another top hat for that set? Really interesting info on creating brilliant finishes on cymbals. Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge!
Hi !! I really love ur work, sounds great ! I m a Young drummer and I don’t have the money yet to buy one of your products, but I like to make my own stuff, could you share where you buy your blanks ? Thanks a lot 😊
ok, so i have a question about the “nesting” of slightly different size hat cymbals..my instinct tells me that a slightly smaller top would put the bottom’s edge in a vulnerable position of angling up. why would a smaller top be preferable to, say, a slightly larger top? just curious as i use almost exclusively mismatched hats and usually somewhat semiconsciously leaned towards putting the slightly bigger cymbal on top out of fear of cracking the bottom edge. anyway, you are a wealth of information sir, and thanks for sharing!
Thanks! I think it's 6 and one half dozen which is more vulnerable in the top position. It may actually be worse to have an oversized top due to that bit of metal hanging over the edge, but who knows? I think sound comes first so whatever is best there is the way!
You basically have to make your own. They aren't super difficult but you gotta know what to buy and how to set it up. If you get on Dave Collingwood's patreon, he can help you with that!

yes! gotta do that.
Extraordinary work, Timothy! Watching the process is absolutely astounding for me.
💪🙏
i liked them unlathed and i like the final result. good job!

Now, I want a bunch of blanks and a cymbal lathe. 😀 Great video!!!
Man, both sets sound amazing!
Those unlathed cymbals are gorgeous....awwww, I was hoping you only lathed the insides, but oh well 😅
Great cymbals + great playing
I agree and preferred the smaller sets though there is a very nice suction going on with the bigger ones.
2 videos in 2 days!! Yes!!!!

I buy them from Domene Cymbals in Brazil and Sabian in Canada. Them and many Turkish foundries will sell blanks if you reach out.

those are nice hats!
always wondered, what do you actually use as a lathe and how did you set it up? wanting to set up an actual cymbal lathe myself but dont know how

what were you doing when you wiped the cymbal with the shavings?
just clearing the surface of dust and extra shavings
Tim, I'd love to know what the shape does to hi hats. Tall vs low.
I'd love to hear some intense comparisons.
yeah i need to film that video!
the 15 inches didnt look like they were laying flat onto each other. I'd think this would contribute to the mushiness`?
They weren't super flat yet, and that can contribute to the sluggish feel/sound!
Nice! (first)
