She's not a victim who made bad choices, she was an active attempted murderer who didn't change until she was backed into a corner and betrayed by her own boss. Terra didn't learn from her mistakes, she sacrifices herself to stop the volcano she caused and then literally runs away from her problems again by refusing to remember what she did to the Titans. Terra out of all the villains, gets off pretty much without a scratch for all the heinous things she did, compared to the rest of the villains who were either permanently frozen or trapped in other realms. Furthermore, she had already betrayed the Titans in Titan Rising shown by her knowing how to use her powers and the obvious plan she set up with Slade to gain their trust, meaning she was a spy the entire time with no actual redeeming qualities, other than her being nice to Beast Boy, but only to get him away from the other Titans that she set up to be killed in Betrayal by the Slade bots.

@@bunsmasterbunny Sure doll, the backstory of being a loner, and when she doesn't give Beast Boy the time to talk to her, even though she knew the world's second greatest detective could easily figure out her inability to control her powers. No, it doesn't justify attempted murder and betraying those who gave you a home. That's not even getting into the comics backstory of being tortured, until she got her powers as she was a princess of a earth controlling kingdomz alongside her much more interesting prince brother, Geo-Force. Terra was mentally unstable as a result and ends up sleeping with Slade, while the same storyline unfolds, except Terra kills herself when she tries to kill the Titans as well as Slade under the hive building, by dropping the building on herself. The comic version never has remorse and is entirely unstable, compared to the animated show where they try to redeem her, but it doesn't work as it's disjointed with how she's not wanting redemption, up until the Titans corner her after Slade betrays her. Terra was a traitor and enjoyed it, only when she was in control, but immediately decides to change sides when Slade takes control of her body, forcing her to be evil, which is not a consistent redemption arc in any way. If they had Terra showing remorse before this event, not including the forced flashback memories she has in the city, then you'd have somewhat of a point, but she's only remorseful when her life is in jeopardy by Slade.

I always saw Titans Together as the true finale with the classic ending where all the heroes we’ve seen come together in a final battle and defeat all of the villains, and Things Change as the epilogue with the movie as a bonus which could also be a pseudo finale. Unlike Spectacular Spider-Man, I don’t think another season is needed, but if the right people are behind it, then it definitely wouldn’t hurt.

I never saw "Things Change" as a cliffhanger, but it was very bittersweet. I associate more with Terra in this episode because of the painful memories of the past that haunt me. She doesn't want to remember it. Beast Boy, longing for things to be the way things were due to the changes going on around him, wants Terra to be what he sees; this idyllic sweet girl he loved. The episode shows us a very harsh and very bitter truth: Nostalgia's can be a powerful thing, but it also is extremely dangerous.
Beast Boy remembers, or wants to only remember, the positive stuff while ignoring the negatives. By doing that, he effectively became the toxic side of nostalgia; wants to relive it by proxy and is unaware of the damage its doing. His dwelling on the past nearly cost him his present.

    • @michaelfireheart8300

@@bunsmasterbunny not really. Beast Boy in this arc was clearly shown to mature and face his past with the Brotherhood Of Evil, but immediately does a 180 in Things Change because they couldn't let Terra stay dead, while also feeling a bit preachy about things changing. But coming back on it as an adult, it hits harder. While the episode was mainly about teenagers growing up, I'd say it can be linked to adulthood as well. When family or friends change for 'no reason', but there is a reason. Even if you can't see it. And sometimes, you'll never get answers for that 'reason', you just have to accept it and move forward. I would’ve loved to have seen more seasons, sure, but I definitely understand Mattie and Khary’s sentiment about how that might've diminished the finale we did get. (heh, ever wonder if the Terra in that episode is really the show’s version of Terra II? Poor, poor Terra II…)
Also, great job to everyone (WDb'ers and fans alike) explaining why The Zeta Project should come back. I’ll tell you all a little story: I really was hoping, long a shot as it may be, that Zeta Month would indeed convince WBD (not to be confused with WDb) to make that happen. But I also thought to myself, “Few things talk more to a big multimedia corp. than sales.” So I finally got me both seasons of The Zeta Project for the holidays. I agree that it was a very wholesome especially the symbolism of beastboy running into the light at the end. To me it signifies beastboy reluctantly coming to terms that he has to move forward instead of always looking back to a shadow of a past that he might have been his happiest in. To him his greatest failure was failing to save Tarra and bring her back to the Titans.

One theory I've heard about how Terra came back is that when Raven and the titans defeated Trigon and she restored the Earth back to normal Terra was restored to life too. If that girl Beast Boy met really was/is Terra my guess is that the life of a superhero or villain wasn't what she wanted anymore, and the Slade bot was one way of making Beast boy understand that. Being Slade's apprentice either she or Slade would've had acess to the tech to program the bot. Anyway there is a story involving Terra's brother Geo-force that follows up on this in the tie-in comic: Teen Titan's Go! - #51 Metamorphosis from 2008.

My theory is that Terra freed herself from her petrification after her powers "caught their breath". Hear me out. The only reason she got like that and why it took so long was because she exhausted her powers beyond their current limit to stop the volcanic eruption from destroying Jump City and used the last of her energy to encase herself in stone to survive. While in suspended animation, she looked back at the things she did and once her powers came back, she freed herself and snuck away. After that she vowed to never use her powers, good or evil, ever again and start her life over. And the rest is history.

I also thought it was normal to want to get more of Teen Titans because of how good & openended the final episode was. The Penultimate episode seemed to finish off almost every villain in the show, then the next episode reminds us that Slade is still out there & gives new plot threads. At least Trouble in Tokyo & years later TTG vs Teen Titans happened. I was only 8 when the series ended with it being my introduction to DC.

I like to think of Things Change and Trouble in Tokyo as two halves of the same finale. While they may seem nothing alike at first, if you compare Beast Boy’s down-and-depressed attitude here with his upbeat-and-happy personality in Trouble in Tokyo, it’s almost like he’s a completely different person, maybe even the person Terra (or whatever’s left of her) wanted him to be before she disappeared forever.
Perhaps that could be a metaphor for the lesson Things Change was trying to teach; While you may not be able get back the past and you can’t always get what you want in life, you can always move on and work toward creating a better future, thus allowing yourself more opportunities to get what you want later.

The writers decided to end the season on a real message for their audience who would grow up to hopefully understand one day. Sometimes...things change, and you just have to let it be that.

I always believed that Tara remembered everything, and just chose to move on, leaving the past in the past and trying to have a normal life despite it. That's probably the canonical answer, but I understand how fans could hate that and want her to simply be brainwashed or a clone or something comic book-y like that, it is very dissatisfying and almost a slap in the face, especially to people who were engaged by Tara and Beast Boy's relationship and wanted them to just be allowed to be together without any hangups. However, in retrospect I love how somber it is, and how it isn't the standard happy ending a lot of shows get, it leaves room for you make up your own stories for how things turn out, and that's pretty awesome despite it not being super satisfying, considering the show shyed away from overt fanservice like not showing Batman or most of the characters origins it feels right to end things in an unclear place, because when we first watched it things weren't really super clear in the first place. Since day one Teen Titans kinda left you to decide the characters specific origin stories and backgrounds that brought them to where they are and that's one of the coolest things about it, you decide if Beast Boy's parents are still alive, or what happened to make Cyborg become....well a Cyborg. Only sometimes do we actually get specific knowledge like Raven's story or Starfire's immigration to Earth or which Robin TT's Robin is.

@@theleonpasta7336 interesting points. In my head cannon is that for whatever reason Terra doesn’t remember her past life due to the trauma she went through, and is hardwired to not like or appreciate the same things she once did as a way to protect herself subconsciously. I’m not sure she would intentionally want to forget BB, sure, he is a big reminder of how her life was when she met him and the torment she put him through. But he also was the only one who actually genuinely cared for her despite her flaws, and despite the betrayal she done he still tried to fight for her. He would welcome her back. So I strongly believe it’s more of a subconscious defense mechanism to shield herself from the harm those memories will cause her. Or, as you suggested, some comic book reason.

I'm glad to have found my people, and that Mattie is one of them. It was pretty disconcerting every time I'd come across a Teen Titans fan that brought up the finale as a "cliffhanger". When the first time I'd watched, and hadn't heard all the creator comments, I still couldn't conceive of someone watching 17 minutes of Terra rejecting Beast Boy and not seeing "oh Terra doesn't want to go back."
So what if Terra does, or doesn't remember, even the weirder possibilities have the same results: she's a lookalike with amnesia, Terra's ghost, a figment of Beast Boy's imagination along with half the episode? Still all that comes to the same conclusion: Beast Boy confronts that he won't get Terra back, and he needs to make peace with that.

I see what the episode was trying to be about. It''s great message, specially for Beast Boy whole coming of age arc. However, the reason why that cliffhanger fails is because of the sub plot with Titans fighting that Elemental Monster. We don't get explanation for it, where it came from nor see how the titans defeated in the end, making the ending feel incomplete. If the episode focus only on Beast Boy and Terra, with the Titans just dealing with random threats, the episode probably would have been better accept by the fans.

People I thought I’d be friends with forever. That’s why I love Teen Titans finale. I can relate to Beast Boy’s feelings, trying so hard to live in the past, trying so hard to recreate friendships with people who don’t want to recreate those friendships, and finally learning to just move on. I first watched Teen Titans because of the new at the time show, Teen Titans Go. And while I despise that show for multiple reasons, it taking away the og show is not one of them. Change, even bad change, can lead to good things. I would not have discovered the old show if the new show didn’t exist. Now I'm md I didn't know it cause bro that kinda hits hard knowing the true meaning behind the ending. I'm about 22 right now and god knows I've been in a ton of situations where I got no closure, I never really saw many people from my high school days after I gradurated. I fired/quit jobs before saying goodbye to some coworkers and I've had situations where friends just...didn't wanna be friends with me anymore. Or situations of something geuninley didn't happen just me and other friend online just stopped talking with no real reason. I've never been like beast boy is in the episode where I refuse to move on and just really wanna cling on to what i had even if its just me fooling myself into believing its still there. Yea I gotta agree.
If the final episode was a cliff-hanger, then why did they bother making a movie? If anything the Teen Tians movie is the real conclusion to the show.
Did everyone just forget it existed?! Or do they just choose to leave it out?

Digimon movie is an all time favorite of mine! If I wasn't almost certain that the execution of the video clips integration was done by James, I'd say it may have been a subconscious inspiration

I was about 10 or 11 years old when the finale happened and it hit me pretty hard man I think that was the first time I've ever shed a tear and watching anything on TV let alone animation.

Everything changes. The more you try to hold onto something, the more your potentially hurting yourself.
Sometimes it’s better to end thing than hold onto that is no longer there.
Enjoy the good times while you had them and remember but keep on growing and moving forward.
I learn I might not always get closure but it’s okay and to keep looking forward to what even if not the same or the good times because I might like it even it was or more.

The problem with this being the ending is that it's not a "and the adventure continues " ending but more "here's a cool story that could have lots of interesting twists and turns...well bye." Ending.

Yeah JLU nailed that type of ending perfectly. Heroes and villains alike successfully work together to stop an even greater threat, then lines are redrawn and it's back to business as usual
