      @@Atreides42 When you think about it, Bashir's arrogance and lack of social skills are a direct result of his genetic manipulation, like all Human augments when you artificially increase positive traits like he had, a unnatural superiority complex is created. This is why the Eugenics war happened in Star Trek's 3rd world war. It's why genetic manipulation is illegal. Every human that was genetically modified felt themselves superior to other humans.

    • @steeltimberwolf
      @steeltimberwolf 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@Finsternis.. But they didn't hasten evolution in positive ways, it lead to two different wars in the Star Trek history. The Eugenics war cost 30+ million lives and the 40 nations that the Augments led, non-modified humans were treated as little more than slaves. This led to a ban on genetic manipulation.
      WW3 was over whether to continue that ban, it lasted 27 years, destroyed most major cities and governments and cost 600+ million lives.
      Truth be told Humans don't do well with genetic manipulation. Bashir is literately the only one who didn't have a mental disorder but he was arrogant and had a hard time being social, his redeeming quality was he had no desire to lead, which was a rarity.

    • @Finsternis..
      @Finsternis.. 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@steeltimberwolf On one hand you are arguing morals which are of no relevance to the evolution aspect. On the other hand you argue edge cases. If humans would not do so great with genetic tampering and came out with mental defects, how would they be able to scare the "healthy" people? Infact, the only reason the Augments lost was because they were warring among themselfes. The "issue" Augments had was ambition. Which, for the sake of morals, was also deemed "defective" in Star Trek canon. It's only the genetics that was done afterwards, after the knowledge was lost, that went bad. Had humantiy not been so ignorant about the topic, that would be a non-issue.

    Imagine having to play a decades younger, genetically enhanced superior as a "rival" in your spare time. You'd be losing constantly in every contest of skill or strength, and any win would most likely be an act of pity or intentional self handicap by your opponent.

      This works when the difference in skill is not that great. I think this would be more like a middle-schooler playing a pro. It's no fun for the pro because there is not even the slightest challenge, and it's no fun for the kid because he is so out-classed, it makes improving hard.
      It would be much more beneficial to play someone only a little better than you.

      @@Sindraug25 I think it would depend on if that pro was willing to dole out bits of advice and tricks during and after play. I would have no problems being beat over and over by a pro at something if they were willing to teach while doing so. If it was an absolute jerk I was up against... that'd be a different story.

      Its in the same family of games: In the UK, Squash aka Squash 57 was previously called Racketball until 2016. Racquetball (US) uses a softer ball and the ceiling is not out of bounds. Hardball Squash (US) is similar to Squash 57 as it uses a harder ball.

    Dunno why people find this "friendship" so appealing. In his conversations with Bashir, O'Brien ALWAYS comes across as cranky, irritated, impatient, or angry. In short, a Negative Nancy. Even in the later seasons when Bashir's happy-go-lucky attitude had calmed down a bit. O'Brien's character really devolved from bland in TNG to downright nauseating here.
