Lightroom Local - Will this change how you use Lightroom?

  • In October 2023, Adobe introduced a new feature, whereby you can access in Lightroom CC your Local Storage.
This potentially could open up Lightroom to all the photographers that want to make use of its tools, but do not want to pay for Cloud. They can utilise their own Local Storage to edit, using the minimal storage option to share only those images they want to.

The concept of the local tab is a welcome edition. I have a feeling the implementation thereof is just beginning. I find using the local tab panel a bit unintuitive. I would like to see an 'Include Sub-Folders' option.

I agree with the Subfolder option, that would be useful, thanks for watching!

PAINFULLY SLOW even off nvme storage. I have a large catalog and it feels like every time I open local storage, it re-indexes the folder.

Great Video, Thank you. Cloud indexing for me has now become very cloudy. Interesting that LRC catalogs only send smart previews to the cloud but LR can sent Full res. Local Storage seems to me the be an Adobe tactic to get you to use their paid cloud storage. However LR is becoming a one stop shop. It has been rumored there will eventually be only one LR ?

I have all my pictures across all my devices using Classic. During import, I have a collection for each of my cameras (I'm a hoarder) that I add the photos to during import. They sync to the cloud. That was the quick and easy way to do it for me.
The filter on Lr doesn't seem like you can do multiple filters, i.e., Camera > Lens > Keyword > Job (which is my default Metadata filter layout). I've done the Smart Collections to Collections drag and drop, but that is an extra step. Wish they would just allow Smart Collections to be shared. I keep adding this as a feature for Lr to the survey's they send me.
I might play around with Lr this weekend to see how it might or might not work. The color coding is a HUGE downside for me. I don't use stars much (basically 3 stars = printed and 5 stars = portfolio) so that might have to be used in some fashion to do my typical Like (Flag) > In process (yellow) > Processed (green) > Portfilio (5 stars)
I'm loving your content. I'm only a hobbyist, but feel that I use LrC more intensely than other hobbyists. Maybe it is the Engineer in me (my day job. LOL )

Really interesting thank you. Having started years ago in Classic but now travelling a lot and I do a lot of editing on my iPad I feel like I’ve got into a real mess. Looking forward to more of these in 2024 because I definitely need to get a now workflow I can live with going forward.

I am off on a big trip later this year so looking to explore workflow when on the road. My chosen process may appear in the form of a video soon! Thanks for watching....

    UPDATE
You can select full or preview file from each mobile device so storage isn't an issue. Also you can select which Album to add your photo to. This can be done after adding the photo to the Cloud so also a non issue.
    Original Comment
I use Classic and like putting small preview files into collections as well as being able to control which collection is shared to mobile devices. I have 4,000 photos in collections in the cloud but the storage requirements for mobiles devices is manageable. In Lightroom you selected a photo and put the full RAW file into the cloud. My RAW files are 30 MB so this equates to 120GB of storage space so would use up a lot of memory on my devices. This is a deal breaker for me. Also, is there any structure in the cloud? Does the photo end up in a folder as per your hard drive? I like my current collections and would want to retain that before I move across to Lightroom.

Lr. Lightroom…Can I save edited photos to my hard drive or do I have to save to cloud? I prefer not use cloud storage.

Using the Lightroom Local feature, it is using the folders on your hard drive. If you edit, it should create an xmp file with adjustments (so non destructive, and not changing the original image). This is all saved locally so should not take up any cloud space, unless you choose to add to cloud. Hope that helps! Thanks for the question

Hmmm, not much left to justify using Lightroom Classic now. Guess in a few years it will be history.

I will be using Classic for a some time yet...still a better editing platform in my opinion, and features I have yet to find in LR. I think it will be around for a while....👍

@@richardchubbUKAgreed, I still love ‘Classic’ and hope that it will be with us for a few more years anyways. That said, with the local storage option working alongside the Cloud, I have to say that I am impressed. Initially, save for a few times playing around with it, I pretty much ignored ‘CC’ as it was called back then, though I was all in for the 'Mobile’ version as I am an iPad Pro nut. But a few weeks back a friend told me about the recent updates to the desktop version and was pleasantly surprised by the changes. While still missing a few features from ‘Classic’, I am finding myself using it much more frequently nowadays. The smooth workflow, quick image loading, tools and features. Again missing features and tools aside, I am very much enjoying this version. My only complaint would be on the ‘Mobile’ side, critical tools found on LR and ‘Classic’ are notably absent from Mobile, notably HDR/Pano, Super Resolution Enhance, Denoise, and a few others. Hopefully, Adobe will address these issues in future updates. Again, I am really enjoying the LR experience.

Sadly, not for iPad !!! Is there any way to stop using cloud for Lightroom on iPad

    • @richardchubbUK
      @richardchubbUK  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hi, this is a quick guess as i haven't tested this, but couldn't you either......?
      1. Access the Apple Photos Library via your iPad. Along the bottom it give you the option 'Device'. Obviously these are either added directly to your iPad Photos, from a memory card/transfer, or synced from your computer, which use the cloud. You will then have 2 copies, one in your Apple Photos and One in your LR, which will take up twice as much space on your iPad (unless you delete from one)
      2. Or, you can save them to your FILES (iCloud) and access that way. But this means you are using iCloud storage.
Then, you should be able to add to LR
      3. You may be able to add directly to your iPad via a connected card reader too.
...and make sure you have sync turned off?
No matter what, you are going to be using storage somewhere. Like I say, I haven't tested any of the above, but this is just from what I think may be possible.
Thanks for watching, and good luck!

I can't believe it took adobe this long to do this. I HATE adobe and resent the fact that I have to use their software. Their icloud just takes over EVERYTHING and sucks up all our bandwidth. They seem to be patting themselves on the back for allow us to use are own storage. Adobe could careless... I am sure they gave us this upgrade while kicking and screaming about all the money they won't be making by ripping us off and forcing us to use their crappy cloud. I can't believe every thinks that allowing us to use are own harddrive is "gamechanging'. You do realize this ability was ALWAYS available. They just forbid it.

I have been using local storage with LR Classic for years, and still sharing to Adobe Cloud, while using not storage at all (previews only don't use storage space). I only share what I want to , and have not yet fallen into the trap of having to share everything! Thanks for watching...
