    If you want to edit across both apps but don’t want to upload the full photos into Adobe Cloud there is an easier option which is to import in Lightroom Classic and add to a cloud synced collection - the collection will be available as an Album in Lightroom and only the smart preview will be synced to the cloud enabling full editing even in Lightroom no need to mess around with XMP’s (although you can enable them if you want as per other comments it means one less issue if any problems with your catalog).

    LrC can write XMPs automatically if you tell it to. And you really should if you don't want to lose your work when your catalog gets corrupted. It's a single checkbox in the catalog settings.

    There are a couple od advantages to Classic that I find to be important. Classic has "color label", this helps with precise organization (for my workflow). Another is the "people" mask, CC has only subject and doesn't isolate people and people's features (hair, skin, etc.). This reduces the need to go to photoshop (sometimes).

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I had to go double check this but you're half right. LRCC doesn't have the color labels which is a great point. However, it definitely has the ability to mask people and peoples features. This might be new so make sure to check your updates.

    • @brianmatiash
      @brianmatiash 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Lightroom has had the same people mask tools as Classic for quite some time... on the desktop. If you're referring to LR Mobile, then you are correct: that version does not have People detection/masking. HOWEVER, any people masks that you create on the desktop will be available on Mobile.
      Also, while I understand that LR doesn't have color labels, it does have Stars and Flags. And you can apply a keyword, such as "Yellow," which you can then search and filter by.

    Great vid! Have been using both LRC and LR for many years now, but especially after the Creative Clouds based file system was abandoned it was time for me to review and change the Workflow, the organization of files and folders and even my hardware (local vs cloud vs external ssd for traveling etc.). I understand what direction Adobe is going into with cloud based platforms but in my humble opinion file/folder organization and workflow does not seem to be a priority on top of their list. Both in terms of structure and training. Anyway, thanks very much for the input, gives me a good feel for what direction I should pursue.

    My workflow starts by adding the photos into Lightroom on the desktop, this uploads them all to the cloud so they are safe. The easier way is to just use cloud sync in both, but MAKE SURE in LrC that you have it sort by date folders. If you have file names that are the same it will merge them if it's not putting them into date folders.
    My workflow now is to ingest in Lr Desktop so it uploads the RAWs to the cloud and then work in LrC because the performance is way better and there are still features I prefer in LrC. It also syncs your changes back and forth.

    Ya want a virtual copy in LR? Create it in Classic and it will sync to LR - if you do syncing
    I just now tested that and within 10 seconds I have a virtual copy in LR
    Another way is to 'Edit in Photoshop' then use the Export feature(s) there to make copies to your liking
    Export out of PS then import into Classic and let them sync to LR -
    - or Export out of PS then 'ADD" to LR.
    A nice thing about Adobe is that by using both versions of Lr, + Camera Raw and Photoshop, (sometimes Bridge) the result gets accomplished 😃

    Great video man! But, can I just say: The very idea that we need to do this is absolutely insane. What was Adobe thinking, making this so damn difficult?! I am a classic user 95% of the time. But at times, it is useful for me to jump on my mobile in the field to do a quick edit and send to a client, or for social posting. The very idea that my presets are not synced between classic and the cloud is just ridiculous... I create my presets in classic. There is a way to export them but it is way too involved. Adobe needs to do better, especially for what they charge. Unrelated: I say that as a previous avid user of Premiere Pro that is testing the waters of Resolve. It is a pretty clear choice. Everything is so much simpler on Resolve. And color grading is years ahead of PP.

    Right now my workflow is Lightroom Mobile on my iPhone/iPad during or right after the shoot (I love to edit a few key images and show my models or clients while they’re still there.) And then use cloud sync to migrate them into my desktop computers massive SSD storage for long term storage or mainly to Print, which doesn’t exist in Lightroom Mobile.
    Since I don’t shoot weddings anymore, I typically only end up with a few dozen images these days. Maybe like 100-200 if I’m doing a studio or car shoot. Street and casual portraits are usually just one or two snaps. If I ever started working professionally again I would absolutely have to buy a Macbook Pro and only use Lightroom Classic, for sure. It’s just far too many images to batch edit them on a touch screen, I would need Classic. Right now, my iPhone Pro and my iPad Pro might even be overkill for casual shooting, but hey I already own them.

    I am a longtime LRc user. I was on vacation last week, and decided to use LR on my MBA! Your Video allowed me to clumsily get my MBA LR library back into LRc on my main computer (Mac Studeo).. WHAT A PITA! I guess it's easy if you're willing to pay Adobe for extra storage. I ran out of space and had to upgrade for an extra $120/yr. I'm pissed and want off of Adobe Cloud which is too limited for social media, sharing outside the Adobe World.
    I've hear of people keeping their entire LRc Catelog on Dropbox, so when they're on the road, they always have their main Catelog. So here's my question. Why not have a separate LRc catelog on Dropbox and just import it into your main LRc after traveling? Downsides? Gotchas?

    Your presentation is alright, it’s clear, but these might as well be two different softwares. I’m interested in LRC because of the catalog structure and I’m interested in LR for remote adjustments, which are importable to LRC, as well as a library of “best” photos in the cloud that are accessible anywhere. This is way too much workaround. Adobe needs to integrate one product, which has the latest tools from PS, and allows an import to cloud storage for access and adjustments. I’ll look elsewhere thank you! Geoff

    Why doesn't LrC simply use the computer's file system? This drives me nuts. If I import, I get 2 copies. It should (at option) simply import virtual copies and have xmp data saved with the original image. Every other program I use is simply point and edit, including showing sub-folders. This should be either the default option or a setting in preferences.
    We should also be able to import into session/catalogue, again using virtual copies.

      There is an option on your import to not make copies in LRC. If you unlock “make second copy to:” it will just reference the files wherever they are. This whole Lightroom vs Classic and keeping things synced, etc. is a confusing debacle to me personally. I can’t even wrap my head around how to keep track of most of what was shown in this video.
    In my opinion, Adobe should only have ONE desktop client that should look (UI) like the CC version but have the functionality of both the Classic and CC version. It should be setup like Capture One offering a choice of catalog import or sessions.
    Adobe has had years now to try and unify these desktop versions and to date - NOTHING. Classic should be deprecated and all features of Classic ported to the new Lightroom, for example, tethering and plug-in support.
    Tethering should be offered on the mobile app (like Capture One) and the new desktop (CC) version. Knowing Adobe, we’ll probably never see it.
