Thanks for watching…the converting to jpg happens during the editing process. Basically, I have a preset set up that exports jpgs and automatically reimports into LR into a subfolder. It means I have jpgs for my website, or social etc, depending on the size file I need. So, it doesn’t actually happen inside of Lightroom, but I never have to manually import them back into LrC or into my website. Hope that makes sense. It also means that as they are in a Collection, I can automatically share from my Mobile to Instagram, or see them when I am away from the main desktop. Hope that helps!

That is a pain. I am assuming you are using LR, and not LrC (Classic)? If you do use Classic, you can edit anywhere with smart previews via Collections, and it doesn't use up any cloud storage at all, and syncs back to your desktop. Just thought I would mention it in case, thanks for watching....

@@richardchubbUK Can't get lightroom classic on ipad or mobile. Stuck with app synching all the time. But I did find a solution. Buy a Surface Pro instead of and Ipad.

Pretty sure it does, although my app that transfers from my camera to phone (Canon) I have set to transfer in JPG, leaving any RAW editing for when I get home, and import from memory card. Should be pretty easy to test though. Thanks for watching

Hi, sorry, I am a tad confused. You mention the "LOCAL TAB of LR Classic"? Lightroom CC is the one with the LOCAL TAB not LR Classic, but I still can't see where you can colour code images or folders in the CC version. For as long as I can remember you have been able to colour code in Classic which is one of the reasons I love Classic. Are you able to just clarify your comment please? Thanks for watching! 👍

Hi, it could be as you are using the creative cloud version and no LrC (Lightroom Classic?) This is actually for the Classic version. Soz for any confusion

Hi Steven, thanks for the question. You could move the whole folder in its entirety, but I am not sure about the size, and how long it would take. Also, the processing power of your computer, if that is 11 years old too? Do you have a back up of your photos somewhere? If not, it is definitely worth making this the priority before you start anything. If your folder structure on your hard drive is by year, then you could move a year at a time, but would suggest you get all the years moved first before moving the catalogue. Again, depending on the time it takes, this may be a process that happens over a few hours/days. Another thing it would suggest is, do not be reserved with the size of your new external hard drive. Way back when, I thought 6TB would be plenty! I am now using two 20TB WD drives (one backs up to the other), containing over 10 years of photos. I have over 600gb left still, so hoping it will last a good few years more before I have to worry about it again. I will reiterate the above, please ensure you have a back up before you start. I have lost a hard drive before (not due to any process that went wrong, but due to it falling off a shelf) and didn't have a back up.....I wouldn't wish that on anyone!! Good luck!

@@richardchubbUK My current laptop is only 1 yr old, but had moved stuff thru 2023 LR to a small 2TB external drive from my old laptop which almost filled it up. So I got a 5TB external drive to backup LR off the new laptop. I think I will move the folders a year at a time per your suggestion and then move the catalog. This seemed to be the easiest way to do it from all the videos I've watched. Thanks for your timely reply.

Hi, what do you mean by renders, do you mean the changes are not applied to the image within Lightroom?

Hi Lightroom Mobile and Apple photos are separate, so deleting from LR should not affect Apple. Best thing to do is to take an random photo, then delete from both to be sure, but I happily delete from LR with zero impact on the photos in Apple Photos. Hope that helps

When you say it was a mess, what do you mean? What happens if you click on the cloud icon in the top right of LrC, and when the dialogue box comes up, hit Alt (windows) or Option (Mac) and click View Sync Status on Web. Anything look odd there?

@@richardchubbUK By mess I refer that my previous syncs included duplicated photos, and were not done appropriately, and that was probably incorrectly done by myself, therefore I proceeded to remove everything and resync the collection I wanted but then it happened what I explained. What I did to continue with what I was doing is to create a new catalog out of my "portfolio folder" in LrC. I opened the new catalog in LrC and then synced to Lr, which it worked, but again, 9 photos are missing. I thought some of the photo might be duplicated and checked which ones were virtual copies, but I counted only 6 virtual copies in LrC and don't tie up to the 9 missing in Lr. Is there a possibility my catalogs are corrupted? Or am I doing something wrong? Could it be that when I deleted photos in Lr somehow it instructed LrC to not allow sync anymore from that original folder? Does that work that way? For now I will continue with the work but if you can shed some light would be great.

Do you mean that are already on your iPhone Camera roll? You could set up a Synced folder in Lr Mobile, then sync this to Cloud, and make sure this syncs to LrClassic? Haven't tried it, but logically it should work. Maybe!! :)
