The UK has an aircraft fuel national grid. I believe every RAF station and most if not all major civilian airports are connected to it. There are massive underground storage tanks distributed around the grid. Hopefully this airfield was disconnected. It is a massive system installed circa WW2. Refineries connect directly to it to pump in fuel. The other end can come out at individual stands for aircraft. Pipelines were even laid from the UK into France (After D Day) so UK forces could refuel quickly with no vulnerable tankers crossing the channel.

Thanks for posting this. I was USAF Fuels and I'm amazed how similar the pumphouses and other equipment is to our stuff. As others have said, F-34 is jet fuel (JP-8 if I remember correctly). That other one, FSII, is Fuel System Icing Inhibitor. Basically fuel antifreeze, and NASTY stuff! The smaller buried tanks, with gravel over them, were most likely your ground fuels: gasoline, diesel, and heating oil. In the pumphouse, the large cylinders in the piping are your filters (that smaller on you looked in? Same as the big ones, just a different configuration), and the brass piston gauge was your Differential Pressure, or DP, gauge. It measured the pressure of the fuel going in in relation to the pressure of the fuel going out.
Yep, I've railed on long enough. Who Da Hell?! P.O.L.!

A very similar diesel generator deep underground last year, long decommissioned, and the same hand prime diesel pump. Like you, I couldn't resist,,,,, huge surprise as diesel started flowing into the fuel pump tank!!

Very interesting explore! That generator at the end was an incredible find! It looked like a time capsule, just left exactly as it was the day they left the base!
It actually looked in very good condition, I'll bet with some fresh batteries that would start right up! 👍😎⚠️

My company used to supply that type of lighting, it is Zone 0 for explosive areas. Definately fuel pumping. very interesting

At the about the 7 min. mark is in fact a pump house. The taller bits are filters and that long opened bit looked like a heater, none of which was much different than what we used in the Navy.

From 31:40 onwards it’s part of the fuel cut off system it’s a weighted line that keeps valve open in event of a fire heat melts the wires releasing the weight cuts off fuel supply, I do a lot of work in pump stations with back up generators see loads of them.

  • @penfoldt2662

Those lights would possibly be intrinsic lights so as not to produce any spark that could ignite a fire in a potentially highly flammable/explosive environment should there be a fuel spill.

Hi Steve this is the first I’ve seen of the place in years such a shame, I took a friend there when it was still active and watched the cats landing and taking off. When I heard it was going to be a prison that and the houses went for a song it finished me, my fathers base has gone to the developers too. Those places you went in was the refuelling station they were the pumps and the filters for the fuel. Also the shower you saw you used to stand on the plate and it would shower you in water, it was a decontamination shower used if you got covered in fuel. The bowsers would fill up from there and then go fill the jets, those big walls you see are the blast screens when loading ordinance on the jets take care mate 👍🏻😄🇬🇧🍻

Was it CO2 or Halon? I was a security guard for Bethlehem Steel years ago they had rooms protected with Halon systems there was a Alarm that told people they had seconds to leave the room before the system would evacuate the Halon tanks, if you stayed it was all over Halon isn't Toxic itself but it removes the Oxegen and would suffercat you quickly. I have a Green Halon. Fire extinguisher that was made in the UK they are not allowed in the USA any more (mine is technically grandfathered in)

That generator is a Doorman, as Chris says, are great engines. My late father had one in one of his trawlers when I was a kid, the sound from the exhaust sounded like the music to "I Feel Love" by Donna Summer. They used to have a works in Lewisham, if I remember well. I've no idea if the company is still trading

I live very close to a jet fuel storage cite, and all the tanks are underground. I used to sample and test them. All around it are refineries and other fuel storage places, and this place looks like a few empty fields.

Well the amazing thing is, it's all in remarkably good condition as someone pointed out. Decommissioned perhaps, but not forgotten.
Anyhow, couldn't help giggling every time I saw the F34, my aircraft ran on that when I served..
Heres a freely accessible snippet of NATO info..online,
Chapter 15: Fuels, Oils, Lubricants and

F-34 is a NATO code for US military JP-8 fuel with fuel system icing inhibitor (FSII). (Jet Propellant 8). Jet fuel. In your video placarded as "AVTUR/FSII, F-34." Means aviation turbine fuel, with fuel system icing inhibitor, jet propellant 8.

Fire suppression is usually Halon. The containment walls are to keep any fuel spills out of the environment. Just as well the tank lid was bolted down I doubt they had been vented after emptying. entering would probably have killed you. PS all lamp posts are numbered - look at the one outside your house.

      Not really.
Which grade are you referring to?
Maybe some of the additives in certain grades could be, but Jet A-1 or Avtur isn't known for being highly carcinogenic.
I have had a couple of pretty bad soakings over the years, and although it is unpleasant and pretty hazardous. Being a carcinogen would be the least of your worries... But as I said, it isn't classed as one as far as COSHH data sheets show.
Touching a little bit that has been laying around for years is fine, just don't drink it.
