This movie takes balls to watch. You’d have to be nuts to watch it. Imagine seeing this movie when it dropped.

I loved the game series and I still avoided it when it came out.
My mom took me and my brother to see it. It was the three of us and not even 10 other people in the theatre. We thought something was wrong until the movie started. Then it became obvious why nobody was there.
This film couples well with Shaft.

I get the impression that Patrick wasn't in the grips of some personal issues and would take any role, but he's just a professional working actor who'll take on some ridiculous roles because he'll have fun while paying the bills.
No one looked like they were having a bad time in the movie, but ooff, that was 90s to a T

You can't really blame Robert Patrick for saying "yes" to this. It was a big budget adaptation of a wildly popular video game franchise, backed by a major studio. He couldn't foresee how truly awful it was going to be.
And he's easily the best thing about it (other than Alyssa Milano's outfit, of course).
We were all innocent souls once, thinking the mario brothers movie was an accident and not the start of a trend. Also Uwe Boll hadn't shown up yet.

it feels kind of like watching "Bill and Ted's excellent dystopian street fight: featuring Beebop and Rocksetady (ball sack edition)" and glad to see it was every bit as bad as I had hoped!

Robert Patrick was a notorious for drinking and drugs around LA. The best example of how much he liked to party is the fact that he is mentioned in stories of wild parties along with Motley Crue.

We as a people don't discuss enough that Jimmy over here became the chairman of Iron Chef America. Or that Bimmy would later voice the Tramp in Lady and the Tramp II. But yes yes, brilliant writing. Rock fucking solid acting. All in all a fun watch with you guys.
If you haven't even seen it I recommend Streets of Fire from 1984. It's the movie that inspired the game developers to make Double Dragon. A very young Willem Dafoe is the evil gang leader.

Jimmy and Bimmy never looked so ridiculous. It really could have been a pretty simple action movie about two brothers rescuing a girl from a gang, though the Shadow Master was the final boss, and was supposed to have some kind of darkness powers.

Honestly, the worst part about this movie is how absolutely underutilized the power of the double dragon is when Bimmy and Jimmy acquire it. Because Robert Patrick doesn't have any super powers, just the ones he got from holding one half of the medallion. So when they got both halves there was nobody strong and powerful for them to fight. They didn't need the medallion to win this, they just needed Robert Patrick to NOT have the medallion.
Just to clarify indeed Robert Patrick was an active alcoholic during that time and he almost tanked his entire career. He was talking about this on a podcast hosted by the guy who played lex luthor in that smallville Superman tv show back in the 90s.

Worth checking out Drive (1997) which has some insane action in it.

It was crushing as a Nintendo kid to have Super Mario Bros, Street Fighter, and Double Dragon come out in back-to-back years as terrible movie adaptations.
If they made this, they could’ve made “Contra” with the Barbarian Brothers. Missed opportunity.
This reminds me so much of the Mario Bros movie. Like they just picked a screenplay at random and put the main characters in it and said "Yeah, whatever, kids will buy it."
Watched this alot when I was a kid, this Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films and Street Fighter. Man, we had a great childhood.

There was also a Double Dragon animated series that predated the movie by a year. It was a GI-Joe style american animation, and they ran with a couple of the concepts from that, but the plot of this movie is still wildly out there and far removed everything else in the IP.
The games themselves stopped being consistent after the second.
I love this movie! It's filled to the brim with stupid fun 90's fluff, childish humor and martial arts! Can't ask for much more!
I loved this movie as a kid. I always knew it was terrible, but just something fun to watch when you want to waste time. It was hilarious to watch you guys watching and suffering through it.

YES!!!!!! love Mark Dacascos! I'd like to recommend you watch Only the Strong. Staring Mark Dacascos as a Former Green Beret who is sent to save troubled youths. How does he save them you ask? What's the way to get these youngsters on the straight and narrow? By only one way of course.....capoeira. They then must test their might against a random capoeira gang.

The movie is closer in plot to the Double Dragon cartoon than it was the video game
I remember being disappointed that this wasn't even more like the cartoon, but all these years later I can't recall what was missing.

I first read about this movie when I was like 13, in a Spanish video game magazine. They especially underlined Abobo's appearance and how cool the film was. I now thank the elder gods of bad movies that I didn't watch it. I put it near "House of the dead".
The guy driving the flaming station wago has been in a lot of stuff.. he was the Japanese ninja in John Wick three..

I still can't believe they got Robert in this and that hair.... The best line in this movie was "love you like a son and like a son I can always have another". And one of the Petes from Nickelodeon's Pete and Pete is Bobo's flunky. I will say I warned you back at mortal Kombat 2.

The movie is actually more in line with what the creator of the game wanted the story to be in the game. The game was supposed to be a mix of mad Max and Fist of the North Star.

6:34 OH OH I can throw in for "remembering the absolute most random-ass useless trivia" on this one: I couldn't remember Julia Nickson's name or her character in Sidekicks off the top of my head but I instantly remembered what I knew her from: in Babylon 5 she's Commander Sinclair's girlfriend in the first season and she kind-of vanishes because the actor playing Sinclair had to leave (he'd been diagnosed with schizophrenia and checked himself into a hospital the minute the season wrapped, JMS said that his finishing the season was like a man desperately trying to keep a grip hanging off a cliff by his fingers) so the end of her character arc got relegated to the novels. Also in season 3 of SeaQuest when it skips forward ten years and sub-fighters have become a thing, she's a sub-fighter pilot from an isolationist, totalitarian conglomeration of Asian nations who defects and offers up one of their super-advanced sub-fighters when she requests asylum. The lead sub-fighter pilot on the SeaQuest gets killed and it's set up that Julia Nickson is going to replace her, but the show was canned mid-season so it turned out to be the last episode and the storyline doesn't have a chance to go anywhere. I wonder if she and Jonathan Brandis had a good laugh about Sidekicks when they met up again on SeaQuest.

They "used up" the classical vampire powers on the first few clans that were introduced, so when they introduced more they made up more esoteric things that aren't generally associated with vampires like the power of illusion or, the relevant one here, power over shadows.
15:54 I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that in this case, not adhering strictly to the game's plot was not in itself the worst idea, because "gangs kidnap your girlfriend now punch and kick a lot of people to get her back" is extremely high-concept and could easily turn out boring as hell, but they certainly weren't smart about it. Honestly, sticking to the game's plot but putting it in this bizarre semi-post-apocalypse just for a little added flavor would've probably worked well.'
This is also doing the absolutely _infuriating_ thing so many of these adaptations do where they put in random stuff from the game (Abobo, the whip lady, etc) just so we know they were thinking "yeah we totally played the game so we _know_ it and we deliberately _decided_ to not be faithful to it lol!" The Max Payne movie feels like it's actively rubbing it in your face. The upcoming Twisted Metal movie is apparently a Mad Max-style post-apocalypse (if you know nothing about this series I can't emphasize enough how much "Mad Max-style post-apocalypse" has absolutely nothing to do with it) and I'm just waiting to see how many times the villain quotes his game-self despite the fact that the radically different setting will make all of his lines from the games completely nonsensical.

Prisoners on hunger strike have been force-fed in very non-gentle ways, and it's done for plain old torture both physically and psychologically (force-feeding someone food they're allergic to or that's against their religion.)

Lets be honest, Robert Patrick makes this movie amazing. He's like Michael Sheen in Twilight. Robert Patrick is on a diet of pure scenery, and the worst part of the movie is that everyone who is not Robert Patrick is actually trying to take it seriously.
Best part of this movie is when Alyssa Milano climbs in the tunnel first and gets in perfect doggy position 😀. The camera zoomed in too lol they knew.
Rented this movie like 3 times when I was in elementary school. Loved this and Street Fighter which came out sane year
Honestly, I liked the 2D into shadow stuff with Robert Patrick. Considering the time, they could have spammed the morph CG that Terminator 2 and Michael Jackson's "Black Or White" popularized. It's not the best effect around, but it's one of this movies better tricks that wasn't the result of the pyro techs earning their paychecks by panicking the neighborhood. A couple decent moments, but that's about it. Oddly enough, this spawned a Double Dragon game based on the movie, not unlike the colon cleansing aftermath of Street Fighter: The Movie - both games being better received than the cash grab movies that created them in the first place.
Oh, a guilty pleasure for me on VHS in 1995. Yes, terrible yet could not stop watching it.
