Malassadas are a portuguese recipe, from the the region of the beautiful Açores I believe portuguese influence shows in many ways in the Hawaii, like the ukulele which is the same as our "cavaquinho". Love and light from Portugal! 🌼
Omg this looks sooo delicious! Last time I was in Hawaii, I ordered a lot of plain malasadas and was eating nonstop in a car lol I miss that 😭 I will try making at home! Thanks for sharing! ❤️
Today I followed your instructions and recipe 😊. It came out delicious 😋! My man friend ate it for the first time, and loves it! I'm from Kaua'i, living in New Mexico, my man friend is a New Mexican.
Just returned from Oahu - I had Malasadas from Leonard's Bakery and they were 'original' with sweet and sour sugar on them. So yummy. How do you make sweet and sour sugar?
Thank you for this great recipe! I've tried it just today and came out wonderful! Had to roll out and use a cutter though as initially - when just shaping with my hands after frying - the dough inside wouldn't cook! Then figured out had put too much dough so rolled out and it worked fine! Any advice for storage to keep them fresh?
Hi there! They’re like donuts, so treating them like so is what we recommend. But in terms of reheating, a few minutes in the over and perhaps a small dash of fresh sugar never hurt anyone lol 😁
hello ... i found your channel, because i was looking for a recipe for malassadas, i know that these were taken to Haiwaii by azoreans. I' m a native of the Azores, ours are slightly different, my mother used orange juice and burning water ... the format is also different, but it is natural they have acquired a different shape over the years, but , I'm the sure they must also be delicious ..
Hi Jasmine, what kind of yeast did you use? Yeast does expire so be sure to check how old your yeast is. If it doesn’t rise after an hour, I let it sit longer til it doubles in size. And instead of using a towel, cover it with cling wrap. You want to be sure cold air isn’t coming into the bowl while rising.
Just tried recipe exactly yet my dough did not rise neither 😐check yeast date 2022,I failed some how plus it wasn't sweet enough, I give up!! Yours looks great, 🙄Will leave it to the pros!! Maybe Haupia next lol
@@LivNGwiththeNGs Thank you for responding. After I sent you the message, I found it. Can I use bread flour instead of APF? And, the water for the yeast: 2 T + 2 t warm water. Is it 2 T cold + 2 t warm?
@@NancyMartinez-lt4sk I personally haven’t used bread flour for malasadas, but I don’t see it being a problem. Let me know how they turn out! These are super fluffy and airy so if they come out this way with bread flour, then yay! Also it’s 2 T + an additional 2 tsp warm water. All warm water.
I didn’t put a filling in the video, but you can easily add a filling by creating a hole with a knife and filling it with a piping bag. Easy filling can be like your favorite jam or custard!
Malasadas are supposed to be undercooked a bit. The name comes from the Portuguese words Mal-Asada which means undercooked. If it is too raw, try to insulate it while it cools down to let residual heat finish the cooking.
Hi there! It could be a number of things. You did not knead it or leave it to prove for long enough or you could have killed the yeast by leaving the dough to rise in a place that was too hot.
No problem :) Hope it comes out better next time around! Try looking into a filling too. That’s what we’re going to be experimenting with our next time around haha.

Yummy anak! Thank you for sharing it with us.
Zhaila Aquino hope you enjoyed it!
What if you have instant yeast ? Do we have to do anything different
My understanding is instant yeast doesn’t have to necessarily be dissolved in water to use, but it also doesn’t hurt to dissolve it.
Makes me wanna make some!
Definitely need to try it! Haha
I live in Hawaii too, I miss eating these😭 Can I replace the dry yeast with instant yeast instead?
Yes you can use instant yeast
I’m going to try your recipe. It looks so easy and yummy. Where’s the recipe?
Hi Nancy, the recipe is in the drop-down description of the video :)

Is there suppose to be filling in these?

Listen I followed this recipe exactly. With the baby malasada and they came out raw in the middle. What did I do wrong?

Yummy . Yummy .yummy . It looks perfect
It really was! We popped them back in the oven and they were fresh again 😃
Wow those look so yummy!!!
These look amazing 🔥 Sooooo good
Ube is the best! 💜. Great cooking lesson!!
We LOVE ube! And thank you!

When working with the dough, Don't add more flour. Oil your hands instead. Great job though🤙
Wait, where are the Pokémon comments?
❤❤😊
Hol up these exist? I thought it was only in Pokemon
I need to touch grass
Would you know why my malasadas came out "heavy" and "dense" ?
