    Thank You so very much for all that you share and do! This is an excellent tutorial! Also very thankful that you do not play music, while giving instructions … for me the music playing is too distracting and makes a tutorial stressful and challenging. Anyway this is wonderful and you are an excellent teacher

      @pabloricardodetarragon2649 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jocelyn D. It's so easy to be cheated on the quality of the stainless steel wire...A lot of stainless steel wires sold for craft are just ordinary 308 or 309 as the 316 is three times more expensive...Impossible to see the difference but your ear will tell you with a nice red inflammation... Even using the best as the 316L Mo or the very expensive 316LVM, there is a non negligible risk of sensitivity to nickel as it is a major component of this alloy.
      I use titanium wire the so called surgical alloy Ti6Al4v, which is in reality a rather common alloy in titanium industry. It does not cost more than the other alloys, so nobody is tempted to cheat.
      About 10 to 20 USD a 50 feet roll of 20 Ga and it is totally sensitive proof. I have to see someone with a sensitivity to Titanium. It's the same alloy used in implants and has totally supplanted the 316L. The lone con is that wire is not a friendly one to work, and it is a killer of cheap cutters.
      Many thanks for your excellent tutorial.

      +ElvisIsASexyBoy Niobium ear wires are hypoallergenic.

    • @pabloricardodetarragon2649
      @pabloricardodetarragon2649 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Karen Casanova
      Nobium is excellent, rather expensive but with beautiful colors and easy to work, maybe too soft for earrings. At 35 bucks the 5 feet 20 Ga at Rio Grande I say that nobium is unfriendly priced, as you get 10 feet of gold filled 14/20 wire 20 Ga for less. Happily there is a Canadian source where you can get 13.5 feet for 17 USD.
      I buy 50 feet of titanium wire 20 Ga 0.8mm for 10 bucks. Titanium is as good as nobium for skin allergies in jewelry with better mechanical properties, so good that you can make excellent kidney earrings. Like nobium you have different anodized colors but not as beautiful as nobium.

    Hi Jocelyn - thank you for all your great Tutorials! They are fantastic help for all skill levels. :-) QUESTION: I believe the best wire would be surgical steel, yes? Could you use bare copper wire (jewelry grade, from Rio G.)? QUESTION: If I want to do different colors, what would you suggest to use? Parawire? Artistic Wire? GP, GF, SF, SP, Copper, Aluminum .. ??? My designs for the earring itself are a bit out-there, big & chunky, copper & other colors, hence Q on ear WIRE color. THANKS so much for your help!! PEACE, Connie in Boston

In fact, you could probably find some on Etsy too, as there's a huge amount of sellers making/selling components/materials for jewelry making on there.

      @Mrs Meowkins My original response to this disappeared for some reason! I have a harmless genetic mutation called Brachydactyly Type D, which affects about 2% of the population. All it does is make the last section of my thumbs shorter than normal. Kind of a bummer for playing the piano or having fancy nails, but other than that it doesn't bother me :) I appreciated your comment, and also that the original poster was courteous in his curiosity.... the person you were responding to may have been reacting in part to a glut of comments (about my thumbs) I got at the time which were rather ugly and insulting. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment!

    I know this an old video but taking a chance asking anyway. Can you use anything other than a steel bench block for hammering the wires to harden them? And is there any other way of hardening the wires other than hammering?

    • @FantasiaElegance
      @FantasiaElegance  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi! Thanks for watching :) A steel bench block or anvil is definitely best, but I suppose you could use anything with a completely flat surface that was harder than the wire you're hammering. If the surface isn't completely smooth, it will transfer imperfections to your jewelry, and if it's softer than what you're hammering, it will get dents and not actually allow you to flatten the jewelry. You can also harden wire by "work hardening," which simply refers to the fact that wire becomes more hard and brittle the more you work and bend it. The other method of hardening without hammering would be to tumble the finished jewelry in a rotary tumbler with steel jeweler's shot.

      If I'm understanding your question correctly, you can use the same gauges (22 and 24) of wire in any type of material (gold, brass, copper, etc.) to make these ear hooks. As far as triangles, it all depends on how large you want them! I'd say 20 gauge would work for about 1/2 to 3/4 inch diameter, 18 for larger, etc.
