In 1984 during my naval career, we took this beautiful waiata through Asia, America and Mexico for 6 months. It brings tears to my eyes and a warmth to my heart to hear it again, Ataahua Whanau, Thank You.
From memory that was when the NZ Consulate opened in Mexico City and the NZ Apple& Pear Board requested that our Kapa Haka group travel from Acapulco to perform to help promote NZ and support our Ambassador. I was blown away when we performed on that TV program televised live to millions, at the requests coming in from viewers asking us to sing a waiata that they knew. Fond memories
Tumeke whanau this song always make me homesick for Te Mahia, Nukutaurua, Tawapata, Onenui Station, Portland Island - Waikawa. Rongomaiwahine / Te Mahia are simply the best. Ataahua.
I love this song. I was in the kapa haka group at CCNZ back in the 80's. Sis Lil Kershaw and Bro Hani Smiler were the tutors. I'm not Maori. I still know more Maori songs than my own cultural songs..
Ngati Kahungunu go to song! Love this about our culture and how people from same Tribe or not connect through waiata / haka and at times never met before. RAWE!

First heard this back 1977 when Hamilton Teachers College students visited our Teachers College here in Rarotonga. Some great memories with the culture exchange. ❤
Kōtiro Māori e, taku ripene pai O makawe hoki nga ngaru ate tai Ko te pare huia He tohu rangatira e Ko Rongomaiwahine O Nukutaurua e. Maori Rongomaiwahine of Nukutaurua. Ko Rongomaiwahine O Nukutaurua e Your beauty is known throughout the land then the whisper reaches even to Kahungunu. Who is the woman who breaks so many hearts? It is Rongomaiwahine of Nukutaurua. Out of everyone in this video, i knew instantly the chick in the pink jersey in front is my darling cousin Rastana Waikawa from Whakaki...and i knew instantly what she was thinking at some of the actions...."aaaaaaaeeeee whats this action" lolz....ataahua whanau. Great to see these on youtube, so us kiwis living in america can watch
Helen did you find out what this song was about? if youre interested google for a story about a man named kahungunu courting a woman named Rongomaiwahine, its both beautiful and interesting and in sames parts quite funny as well.
This is my absolute favorite setting of this song, but what is the group name? Is it a professional or amateur group? Where are more vids of their performances??
Have heard this before. But, just now realized that it's the same medley as "kaulana na pua" from Hawaii. Is this just kaulana na pua in the Maori language?
+Teddie Gauta It is the same melody but different words. My very simple explanation of lyrics of this song is it is about Rongomaiwahine and her husband Kahungunu, who are famous ancestors on the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand. There are tribes named after them. If you search "kotiro Māori e" you can find a translation of the lyrics.
we all originate from the same place Teddie..Hawaiian, New Zealand Maori, Cook Island Maori and many other pacific Islands..we all came from Tahiti originally so we are bound to all have versions of the same song.
Desiree Tereu Tahiti?? That's news to me.. Hawaiki is Tahiti? Lol. I don't doubt we (all Poly's) came from the same place but it's the first time I've heard Tahiti be mentioned as that place.
@@tiket499 Kia ora. When James Cook arrived in NZ in 1769 he had a Tahitian sailor on board the Endeavour called Types. In his journals he records the fact that Types spoke with the local people of NZ and could be understood. A good indicator of our origins.
