It has taken around two weeks to gather my findings from various sources... from watching others destroy disks right up to how a 3.5" floppy was made in the factory!
This is my second iteration of the only way a floppy can be reverse engineered without bending the metal shutter, wrecking the disk, pinging the spring or just fluffing the whole thing up.
I am open to other suggestions, but I have tried so many things and either ruined the disk inside or wrecked the case.
This method ensures you can keep your original floppy game case/labels as pristine as you can, these things are getting rare now.
My idea is to recover the disk casing and possibly the inner disk to original quality.
If the inner disk is beyond recovery, then a new inner will be sourced and data written back to it from a known game data archive source.
TIPS:
- Grab those floppies from your cellar or loft and store them between a constant 10 to 40 degrees, otherwise they will end up growing mould inside the disk (if they haven't already!).
- Before you put a floppy in your drive check to see if it has mould, if they do, don't put them in your drive, they will make an awful ticking/scratching noise and will scratch the disk causing it to fail!
- If you do end up putting a disk in to test and it makes a noise, immediately take it out and send it in for recovery.

Thanks for hint on how to remove metal cover without bending it! I'm just about to try to recover hundreds of amiga floppy disks, wish me luck! :)
How did it go? I have had varying success. I have learned that as soon as you put a disk in to read and hear any sort of noise the disk comes right out. Apparently if you contaminate the heads then you need to clean them straight away otherwise the next 5 or so disks get a light scoring!
@@RiotRetroGaming Some of the disks I was able to fully recover, some partially (which in some cases was enough, for example to get hall of fame scores from Civilization :) ). I had maybe one floppy that was completely broken, so it went pretty ok. I have more floppies to clean and check, but not enough time for now.
You are a legend... Had a disk that I didn't want to pull apart for risk of destroying it... Your video helped me get it apart with minimal damage (when squeezing to remove the slide I heard a tiny crack)... That damage was more about my impatience than anything... But... Tried it on a few other disks and the knowledge I'm soo grateful for... :)

Thank you so much for this. I had a number of 3.5 floppy discs that got water damaged . They held years of my sound and music samples and compositions used on an older S550 Roland Sampler. I was hoping to somehow dry them out . Your technique for opening the door will hopefully allow the inner floppy disc and outer casing to dry out. If necessary to remove the inner disc It looks possible to replace it in the outer casing from what you've shown . Thank you again This is the only video I've seen to address my disaster. Wish me luck !
Just don't press too hard, as long as you can just feel pressure from your finger on the other side of the disk, that's enough.

Great video on how to open the metal slider side of the disk. I use thin sharp nose tweezers to help lift the metal bit over the guides. Also, I typically put the metal slider back in first, then the spring (although this does require the use of tweezers to put it back.

Do you still own an Amiga? If not buy a 'Greaseweazle' for about £20, attach a PC drive to it and read the disks 🤟😎🤟

It's ok to put straight into a drive, just make sure the metal spring has been taken out of the disk first.

1. _"Inner..._ floppy disk," as opposed to... what? Is there an "outer disk," or aren't there just THE disk and its jacket?
2. _"Metal_ shutter? What about the ones with _plastic_ shutters? Why not just "& Shutter..."?
