I have recently taken up "running" because my mountain bike is about 14kg too heavy. still wear cycling kit though, I wouldn't want to be mistaken for a runner...
LOL. This video totally made my day, hilarious. Reminds me of this one customer at a bikeshop I used to work at that would weigh everything he bought. THis one time he actually weighted every single jersey we had to select the lightest one, and I don't mean different jerseys, he weighed every single size M jersey of the same model he wanted. After that, we started hiding the scale everytime he walked in. Interestingly enough, the guy never won a race, go figure.
She got totally turned off when you said titanium bolts.. bad move BHD, we all know aluminum bolts are lighter, hydro dipped to look like carbon of course.
Man, girls like bright colors. Now you can get aluminum bolts even in hot pink. Although one must keep in mind that the coating carries some weight penalty.
Love your irony!😅 the hip replacement part is so funny. Step 7 is so on point! See many on ultra light bikes, with their belly almost resting in the toptube when they try to be aero😂 I think the metric scale is: 1g of bike weight = 250g of rider weight.
Damn, Backwards hat Dylan. She left her oven on. You could’ve put bread in her oven but she didn’t want your weight weenie! 😉🤣😂 No, Seriously... This was a good video! I find myself complaining about my 18lb bike when I, Myself, Am 30lbs overweight. 🤦🏻♂️ I LOVE climbing and sometimes I really do wish I just had an all around lighter bike but I know the one thing that will help me get up hills faster than any bike I could buy is just simply losing all this excess weight and body fat. I’ve been losing weight consistently and training correctly with all your advice! So for that, I am forever grateful to you.
What are your thoughts on drilling holes in the indoor trainer to make it lighter? Would that make me faster? Oh, and the workstand, and various tools I use to work on my bike? Should I drill a few holes in them to get the weight down?
Yeah, your point on body weight is so true. At some point I realized all the weight savings wasn't worth it -- considering my body type and athletic lack of prowess -- and comfort is more important than bike weight.
Great stuff! I feel this is the real Dillon. Suggestion, cut your drops off practically to flat bars. Why do you need the pointy end of a seat? Cut that off too! Drill random holes in your frame.
For MTB crowd: Lose the visor, or better yet go road helmet, more vents make you "cooler" anyway. Bar tape or handbar grips never more than a few mm think and for road only on the bars where hands go... MTB always slick centre tires, just brake in the corners. Hey ever try carbon brake pads on them carbon rotors? Thanks BHG you are always on point
Awesome video & so true, if riders would work on keeping their own weight down & making their bodies stronger then they would be strong on any bike. I sometimes ride my mid 90’s steel framed 30 lb bike & have no trouble keeping up, being comfortable is more important than shaving weight
Backhat dude is a legend, he defiantly understands the finer points of becoming the ultimate cyclist, weird chick, left before he said how many titanium bolts were in the brake rotor.
could You discuss about Intervals? the types and which benefit could We get from each one, so that will be a strong tool to pick up the right one. thanks a lot
Running no pressure is also a significant weight benefit. If you do that, you don't even need the valves! And running just the very necessary amount of spokes is a must too!
I'm riding an 11kg steel gravel bike for training that is sturdy, comfortable, and easy to maintain, but KOM hunting on it is impossible, and I only have 25 Strava followers. My thinking is to get a 2nd job, cut my training from 15 hours a week to 3, and build a 7.41kg carbon everything KOM crusher. Then I'll just spend my 3 hours of training doing max efforts that will hopefully bring in more Strava glory and followers. Is this the perfect plan?
Dylan, can you please make a video in the future about how to maximise our performance/potential if sy is naturally/genetically less talented than the average or if sy doesn't know how talented (s)he is but still has a serious ambition to become eg. a cat 1 or 2 racer? Is it worthy to go to an advanced sports centrum or hiring a personal trainer to find out where we are on the scale? Personally I am 23 yrs old, slightly faster than an average road cyclist, my weight is circa 200-210 lbs. My body type is probably between mesomorph and endomorph and has shorter legs, but I hardly know anything about my genes themselves. I am looking forward to race some 1,5 to 3 hour long races and TTs, but later would do more 6 to 24 or even 30 hour long races or personal challenges.
Thanks for the great videos Dylan , and loved the backed up science literature stuff. Could you do a video soon about the science/literature of sleeping pills if they are good or bad for your performance especially before race day . Sure some suffer with bad sleep or restless nights after hard training blocks and race night? Thanks
I had a friend you contacted the tech team of a bottom bracket manufacturer to find out how much he could file the bracket down to reduce the “q factor”. The tech team told him if he wanted to make the bike faster he should ride it.
Trying my best both to win that Strava segment, and the Monday night group ride race to the stop sign. Got it - Lose 10 pounds on my bod, but do I really need to forgo cool bike stuff that weighs less?
I'm ashamed to admit it, but I went through this phase about 6 years ago. After several double flats and stuff breaking on every ride. I went back to what was reliable and have never went back to the 'LIGHT' stuff. Figured I could loose pounds of body weight (change diet) cheaper, could also loose up to 1kg after going to the bathroom.. Lolol... Great video...
Got us replacing all our 100 gram parts now with a 99 gram components regardless of all other factors, including costs, durability, and overall design and functionality
@@DylanJohnsonCycling I actually worked on a bike a while back that came in with 3 bolts, naive me thought the guy had lost them and I replaced them to be nice, just to be yelled at by the customer when he picked up his bike
dylan, i've been trying to find information about how electro-cardioversions (to correct atrial fibrilation) affect athletic performance heart rate. you seem to be adept at finding very specified studies. do you happen to know where i might find info around this?
So, are some big name athletes also weight weenies? I mean a certain someone who ended his name with Merckx drilled many things on his hour record bike (mainly the levers), making it really light, even for a track bike at that time.
When it comes to hiking though it definitely helps a bunch to fuss over weight. A 50 pound backpack really isn't fun to carry. Get it to below 25 pounds or (much) less and your hikes will be much more enjoyable.
i'd be actually interested in the performance gain from let's say 2kg on the overall bike. what time benefit is there to gain (if at all) by dropping some weight from the bike?
You forgot to mention that you need to weigh everything, and then send it back to the shop/supplier if it is 1g over the stated weight and only complain with the worst attitude!

Any crucial weight weenie tips that I missed?
Remove the cock and balls to save between 30-500 g. I did it and dont regret anything!
Wearing warm or winter clothes is forbidden.
Always wear shorts, and jersey without sleeves even on winter
A customer came in one day asking to not over do it with the tubeless sealant, and to use only 30ml per tire as that was enough to seal the tires.
For kom hunting, give your garmin to your friend on the scooter or in the car
@@statosphereonline2008 I guess you can get into more aero position as well. Win Win!

Pretty easy to calculate, Google - bike calculator. And yes, it makes a difference on a steep long climb.
GCN has videos on this.
dude...so glad summer is around the corner and I can ditch my 8kg cx bike for my 7kg road bike!
How many brake rotor bolts does BHD use?
I spray insect repellant on my bike. Any fly landing on it would just add weight.
Bruh you're hilarious! Had to share with my club 🤣🤣🤣
5 Stars DJ!!!!
So how many bolts on the rotor?
What about hollow spokes?
Instead of a center lock system I run a six bolt system with two bolts. I save so much weight with that.
Ok. That was awesome. But now we need sidewards hat Dylan...he's like backwards hat Dylan but gangsta:)
Wait, what if we DO want to know how many brake rotor bolts he runs?
Don't go brake rotor bolts, you can save 15g if you use the bike ahead adapter!
Plucking your eyelashes and ripping out your nails may hurt, but so does carrying that weight up a hill. Bloodletting is also very effective.
Really funny. Constantly switching from grams to pounds gets confusing tho, can we just stick to metric?
So he says he has an 11 pound bike and then proceeded to describe all the parts in grams? How much is 11 pounds in KG?
I did use just 3 bolts on my brake rotors and I destroyed 2 rotors because I had just 60-70 grams rotors norm one probably wouldn't be destroyed
You forgot to mention that you need to weigh everything, and then send it back to the shop/supplier if it is 1g over the stated weight and only complain with the worst attitude!
good video bud.👍
I was hoping to learn where I can shed more weight. This is nothing new. Perhaps, a part 2 video is in order.
