Is This a Bad Idea? Building a stitch and glue wooden boat model kit

- Building a scale model wooden boat can teach us many things. In this video I am building a wooden boat model kit scale model of a stitch and glue constructed wood boat and I learn a bit about how wood boats are constructed, and whether I have the right level of interest, ability and desire to potentially build an actual full size wooden boat kit.
This Skerry sailboat model boat kit comes from Chesapeake Light Craft and is scaled down exact version of their actual Skerry boat that is offered as a kit to build a 15 foot sailing boat that looks exactly like this one. Building a boat model kit like this one is a taste of what it could be like to build a full size wood boat kit. If you're considering one of these types of projects, putting together the scale model boat might be a way to help you decide if boat building is in your future!

Thank you for sharing your experiences and insights
i like the peeler but i understand the Jimmy Skiff II might be less time and possibly less of a challenge/less experience needed to craft it.
Not gonna lie...That model is pretty cool! It's literally the perfect device to get people hooked into building a full size boat!
I see a miniature version of your boat as your next winter project!
Sailing (or motoring) a boat you built yourself must be one of the most life-affirming things anyone could do. Not just a functioning boat, but a beautiful form, crafted by your own hands, that carries you across water.
So many of us are in the same boat, no pun intended. Middle aged guys that have been playing around with boats for decades that kind of get pulled sideways or sort of fall into a project like this. Right there with you. I’ve built a few stitch and glue boats, spent years sailing and motoring all around the Annapolis area. CLC is awesome. I’m currently working on my own design that is a melding of bought plans and my own modifications. Cutting the panels on a home built cnc.
Go for it! You can rent space at clc too I think.
Oh wow! Show us your CNC and your boat projects. I also built a few stitch and glue boats, and made my own CNC for the purpose.
I’ve built two wooden boats (an 11’ sailing dingy by “eye”, and a 16’ rowboat from plans), and like others who have commented, there is something very special about being in a boat you built yourself and know intimately. But I would caution that you spend the time making sure the boat you build has been professionally designed for the purpose and conditions you are going to use it. Personally, I enjoy the building process almost as much as using the boat. It teaches me patience!
Great video, Wayne, your presentation is a lot of fun! Thanks so much for showcasing our Skerry Scale Model Kit. Please come back to the shop anytime and let us know when you're ready for that Jimmy Skiff II kit!
In 1986 two things happen in my life we had a child and I built a boat I bought a 17‘3“ skiff. I had paper plans I made the ribs I bought 6 foot wide, 23 foot sheet of plywood I laid out all the offset measurements Cut it and it actually fit. It turned out to be a beautiful center console with a 30 horse Yamaha on it.
That's actually pretty cool also I think that would make a very interesting series of videos to watch
👍
You totally should build a full size kit build!
it is my dream to build a wooden boat for many reasons,
the first one is that you have so much hull profiles you can do, not just deep vee planing hulls that are terribly power consuming .
second, the wood is naturally a vibration damping material which makes the boat more comfortable.
Finally, it is possible to custon build your own boat that suits your needs.
very good video
At my age I don't think I would attempt to build any boat. A model yes, great video WtBG
Yeah - these things can be a lot of labor!
Making your own boat like that is pretty cool.
Building this model is a little more satisfying than I thought it would be.
I like your showing of the boat model...models are forever!! Years ago I started a full plank on frame model of my 10 ton "Tahiti Ketch" to test ballast changes to stop the heavy rolling when on the mooring. I was determined to follow good boat building practices in the model, and carefully notched the stem and stern pieces (the "rabbet") to receive the plank ends. I set the last plank in 1 day before my son was born. The model "rested" in my closet for the next 52 years. Today I brought it out to complete the sanding and varnish of the full wood hull!!
If I was retired and had spare time I would consider it. As a fellow that is working 50 hours a week I try to spend as much time as possible enjoying being on the water when I can.
There's nothing wrong with that!
Very cool model I like it i have often thought about carving out some kind of a sea craft out of drift wood or dried out palm but that hasn't happened as I first would like to get lucky enough to move to such an area first Good video
That would be a nice long term project. If you have a safe place/garage/shelter to work on it for weeks, months or even years and you are motivated, then do it.
That's the real challenge - having a suitable space to do the work.
Considered the peeler skiff for quite a while but chose to build the lumberyard skiff from plans instead. I say go for it, nothing as cool as a wood skiff and it’s the perfect boat for crabbing!
The lumberyard skiff is a really neat boat!
Great vid - this is the first vid I have seen while looking at vids for at least three years on building your own boat that suggests to build a kit first - I have been wanting to build a Tango 13 or 14 - I bought the plans and some 1/16 x 8 x 12Inch Thin Wood Sheet for Craft on Amazon to make my own kit - I used my printer to enlarge the plans to be 1 inch = 1 ft - I also bought the fiberglass resin and cloth to use as fiberglass cloth - I just need to get off this PC and out of this chair long enough to put it together - I cut the parts with a scroll saw, the Exacto knife was hard to work with using tiny saw blades for me - if there is a wooden boat you would like to build it is very easy to make a scaled kit and build it to see what challenges and heartaches will be required to build the real thing -
Thanks - and good luck with your build!
I like the idea of building one of the CLC boats. I have seriously considered building a solar/electric version of the Southwest dory. Kind of patterned after the classic ELCO electric launches. I would probably just put a ePropulsion 3Kw pod motor on it and steer with a rudder. I have an old 20’ electric pontoon boat with one of their 6kw outboards and I enjoy it. It is the only reason I have not built the Southwest Dory. With a 10Kw 48v batteries it would have about 6 hours of cursing at 6-8mph or so. Add 600 watts of solar and it is more like eight hours of endurance. I think you would like the Peeler better than the Jimmy Skiff II. My way of thinking is that you spend an extra 100 hours and get what you really want vs putting 150 hours into a boat that you might not enjoy as much. (Of course it is your call). Keep in mind that the Peeler will be much faster as it can plane. The Jimmy Skiff cannot and will not go much more than 5 mph. If you do decide to build it, I hope you video the project!!!
The electric pontoon sounds neat - and you bring up several things to think about!
Awesome ! Becoming a boat building chanel!!!
we shall see!
great segment Wayne. my friend had a 15-20 foot wooden boat with a small diesel with drive shaft that looked a lot like the peeler. it was older 25 years ago. the ride in it was unbelievably smooth. we took it out of Deale and went to the down the bay a town or two. it just took the waves so well. i think you should build one, then you can always put it up for sale.....lol. thanks for sharing.
That sounds cool!
Well done!
Thank you!
10:53 a clear bottom boat kit should be a cool option they should offer 😅
That's right! LOL
@@WayneTheBoatGuy might be worth hinting it to them 😉
Nice video! I was also thinking of building a model kit before attempting to build the actual boat. I do like the jimmy skiff as well but need something with a deep v hull to handle the waters off Half Moon Bay/SF Bay, CA.
" Sailing Magic Carpet " Y.T.vids has an episode or two where He built a stitch and Glue wooden boat to use as a tender for Magic Carpet II.You would perhaps enjoy that. A wooden boat could be good fun if it is new not used.

Just a little tip, from something I've learned doing something similar
If you start from the wider rounder end, an work towards the less of a bend, it is easier to bend the strap/rail/gunnel, on a 20rowboat we call the Carmero (funny story on how it got its name) we had to redo the rails on it, and I started on the less bend end, and I cracked the 2×4 tryn to get it to take the bend in the wider end of the boat, to learn I should of started from the wider stern instead of the narrow bow😅
That's exactly the mistake I made! Logic makes us want to start with the easy part.
@@WayneTheBoatGuy yess, 😆
But it took me a few mistakes to learn that starting with the hard part and saven the easy fer the end when one is tired is a nice treat. Learned that growing up and staking fire wood 😆, always start from the far side, so that in the end you only gotta pick up and stack instead of toting from the far side the whole time 😆
Go for it! I built a stitch and glue canoe and it was fun. I have almost no wood working skills . Just enough that I still have all my fingers. 😉
I forgot to add that I like the Peeler a lot - I am in South Florida so the boat needs to be able to go in and out of Haulover inlet - I have owned around 10 boats from 10 ft to 27 ft and only the 17 ft Del Quay was the only one I never buried the bow going thru there. I currently live near Hillsboro Inlet -
I think we've all seen videos of how rough it can get there! I think it has a 20" transom which helps, but being flatter on the bottom, that particular boat might be a handful in the inlet.
You gotta build the Jimmy skiff!!
It could work for me!
I've built 2 boats out of plywood. It's been decades ago, and I started with plans I got online. One turned out really nice, and I took it out several times, and then sold it to someone who was going to use it as decor in his new shop. The other one was more rugged looking, and never got to see water. The same guy bought it, and was going to turn it into a desk. I never did visit the shop to see if he actually did the things he said he was going to.
Cool! Did you end up using fiberglass over the wood?
@@WayneTheBoatGuy I did not. They were a glue and screw design, and I just used stain and 10 coats of polyurethane. I didn't have it long enough to test the durability of it, but it was absolutely gorgeous.
Great video. I love content
Thank you!
I build stainless steel dicast models seems fun and with enough time and space I think wooden models or even small wood boat would be doable
250 hours if all goes well, it never does. But I vote go for it, weekly updates and the occasional short. I'm sure it will be a fun challenge.
Yeah it might be a fun project!
@@WayneTheBoatGuy You're gonna need a nice comfy moaning chair for those troubling moments lol
@@SuperWooba - a "moaning chair" LOL
I've had the same thoughts as you on which model of CLC to build. I like the Peeler Skif, but the Jimmy II does appear to be a better first-timer project, and for me the ability to motor, sail or row is good as well.
It seems like a good first one to try!
I built heaps of model boats as a kid into one day I decided to build a "full sized" model and have never turned back.
Nice new camera
Thanks! This was shot with a combination of DJI Pocket 3 and iPhone 11 for the close ups.
Build a full size wooden boat! You won't regret the experience. And it is a forgiving process! Don't worry about not being a woodworker or anything. Just do it. I built a 22' freight canoe and a 30' whale boat replica in stitch and glue. Have not built a model.
Yeah great points!
I built their san,o paddle board. It came out good and it's fast. I'm older and too fat to use now. Lol. I wanted to build their wherry but it's to rocky where I live for a nice wooden boat.
Looking forward to seeing you build a boat. You’ll be known as Wanye will it float guy! I never understood why people build a wooden boat. They are nothing but a PIA in the maintanance department. They’re beautiful but to keep them that way!
These kit boats seem like they would be less maintenance than traditional wood boats because everything is completely sealed in epoxy and fiberglass rather than just painted or varnished wood.
@@WayneTheBoatGuy that does sound better! Teak in a boat is enough maintenance! I still have my great grandpas wooden boat he built. It needs to be sanded down and totally repainted. Jon boat is so much easier! Built a wooden console for a skiff. Coated it in epoxy did great for years. Eventually the epoxy cracked at the top and water got in. Didn’t take long for it to rot. We rebuilt it out of Aluminum. To me wood and boats is like computer controlled motors in salt water. They are great until they’re not! I think like anything if you store it inside and use it carefully it will be fine. It’s when you don’t have the indoor storage space and things sit outside that would cause problems.
I want to see you build the peeler skiff
Yeah that boat is nice but the hours might be more than I can commit.
You should build a boat!
Would be awesome if you did !!
I think it would be a great experience, but I don't think I have the patience, let alone the carpentry skill and tools that would be needed.
I am curious as to what tools I might need to build one of these full size kits - besides lots of clamps.
When you preface your video by saying, "Is this a bad idea, " well, that's like saying, "Hold my beer and watch this. ".....LOL😂
I hadn't thought about it that way - lol
Build whichever boat you need not the one that's easier to build
In my mind there’s so many boats that I want though and I have yet to even really figure out what is best for me.
NEVER.... I REPEAT, NEVER say its too big of a project. The human will is more powerful than any challenge or obstacle. How do you eat a whole elephant? Simple, one bite at a time.
I appreciate your positivity!
First of all great video but it's not for me i rather sit in the boat and fish not in my homemade boat
I totally understand that!
