Wow! Thanks for all the views everyone! A couple of notes that people have pointed out: I totally forgot you could go down to the blacksmith in New Londo without the master key, so technically I could’ve gotten a +5 before the Taurus Demon. I also probably should’ve thrown my stats up in screen for each fight to show where the AR of my weapons were coming from, I’ll keep that in mind for future videos. I think this run I finished at SL100 with 45ish strength and 35ish intelligence, whatever was needed to 2-shot Gwyn. My next big project is ranking every weapon, generally by DPS with some personal input, and I hope to have that out mid-March as it is a big undertaking. In the meantime, I may do a video on explaining the Dark Souls damage formula as a bit of a precursor.
Additional notes: You had access to the Demon Great Hammer, I'm a little curious why it was not on the menu for the first several bosses. Also, even without the master key you have access to a Fire weapon from Vamos, as well as rtsr and power within immediately after you defeat the Taurus Demon via the Darkroot Basin. Not sure exactly what qualifies as a normal routing, but from a quick look you excluded rtsr and power within for the entire run which seems odd. I'm going back to finish watching the video now, but it just seemed so odd I had to comment.

Minor idea to improve the damage early game, the Asylum Demon drops the Demon’s Great Hammer if you defeat him on your first attempt, which deals more damage than the Zweihander(I think, not sure what the motion values are). I find it silly when people complain that "Dark Souls is too hard, it needs an easy mode" when the game has so many different ways to completely break its difficulty. The game already has an easy mode, it's called being resourceful.
This game is hard for people who haven't played it more than a couple hours... I'm currently finishing an SL1 run to replace my SL5 darkwraith I built on PS3 (rip... YLoD). Even after not playing the game for a few years I can still parry and backstab most enemies without a problem. I think people think the game is hard because they're intimidated and think dying is bad.
(another comment lol) I think the tier list of game weapons by DPS output against late game bosses is a cool idea, specially for me since Dark Souls is my comfort game (ironically) so I always go back to it regularly and I love trying out new weapons and new builds and seeing things, would be fun to look at some alternatives I'm yet to consider (and well, I suppose that something similar for all the fromsoft titles would be neat too)
2:10 According to wikidot, there is a mistake here. The second range should read: DMG = _x*( (19.2/49) * (x/D - 0.125)^2 + 0.1 )_ where x is attack and D is defense.
I honestly can barely read my own graphic lol nice catch. I do think I did use that for calcs, although that didn’t ever come into play in this run to my recollection
Damn i just found you and i was listening blind and i just assumed the bloodborne ones were already out and dark souls 3 .. i check and this video droped like a day ago lmao cant wait to see more!
The mathematically optimized damage rout would probably be something like what I did for my optimized build, which is to get the master key by either means, (or do the lower undead burg skip) kill the Capra Demon first, and then upgrade the highest strength weapon (Demon's Greataxe from Shiva of the East) all the way to plus 15. From there you pretty much just need Power Within before you fight the next boss (whichever you choose). From there, once you have your STR at the soft cap, the only further goal should be to get the best catalyst you can at this point in the game, make sure you have enough int to use it, and whatever the strongest magic weapon spell you can get is. Once you reach Gwyndolyn you will have to switch to her Faith-based magic weapon spell and catalysts, because it is better. You will need to max out her covenant to get the most out of this.
Cool run! Gives a sense of what Fromsoft was expecting players to be using. Think you could optimize a little better by changing from damage per hit to damage per second in your weapon selection.
I feel that for when you showed the formulas at the start, it would have been helpful to show the continuous function graphed, so that we can see visually which parts of the function might grow faster than others
Seeing that absolutely absurd defense formula makes it even funnier that Joseph Anderson got mad at Breath of the Wild and Dragon's Dogma for not working the same way he (thought) DS worked
"going to avoid tail cut weapons as they're not guaranteed" yes they are also pinwheel that early is absolutely not the intended route, you're directed towards the undead church, and blighttown at the same time, you're only directed towards pinwheel after you get the lordvessel, npcs in the game have dialogue, which you're blatantly ignoring and i'm not sure why
FYI, darkmoon blade out damages crystal magic weapon. It just requires a significant farm if you don't pvp or dupe the items necessary to +3 the covenant.
Hmm I don’t know if it’s the same exact formula but it’s pretty close. There are definitely some benchmarks you want to hit once you get to certain areas but I’m not sure what they are exactly
Standing next to Quelaag's spider head (between the head and the leg) is actually a mostly safe place, her sword attacks cannot hit you from there Im pretty sure. At the very least the times Ive stood there she has not been able to.
I actually think it's nice that you didn't use rtsr or pw because those can be a bit tricky to use as a casual player, also it would have been nice to see the damage setup (weapon name, weapon upgrade, buffs) alongside all the numbers on the screen, I know the info is in the voice over but having all the info on screen at all time would make it easier to follow now I'm jealous I don't have some cool dark souls video ideas like you just to give myself an excuse to replay this game
Yep always working to improve graphics for upcoming stuff! I think throwing important damage stats in the top right will be helpful (did this for the manus catalyst video). I am used to having 99 in everything for my NG+++++++ one shot videos so it didnt really matter there.
5:00 We can not reliably get the master key THE THIEF STARTS WITH MASTER KEY. You can have bombs and master key, this is common for some glitch set ups.
Also this isn't me trying to call you out. Obviously to do all this maths you're far smarter than I am, but it would be interesting to see this done with the master key and cheesing.
Enjoying the video! Really satisfies my dark souls love while combining it with my inner dnd powergamer. One curiosity I have is you mentioned how split damage is just worse in so many situations, how would the tumble buffing glitch from OG DS1 impact its viabiility? I remember I used to do a mage with a lightning uchi + gltiching crystal weapon onto it as my base replay character typically.
Hmm well adding a weapon buff is always better than not and usually better than an infusion, but I would guess that against most enemies a +15 with CMW would probably out damage a lightning one with the tumble buff. I am curious based on your comment however how a lightning weapon buffed with sunlight blade or gold line resin would work. Would the lightning damage instances be calculated separately or would they be calculated as one? This will be part of my upcoming video, but innate weapon damage uses the Motion value of the weapon (so a 2-handed attack would be multiplied by 1.2) where a added buff isn’t multiples at all, so with split damage that is an interesting edge case.
could do a souls mimic challenge, where you pick one of the games and you have to gear yourself to near match the boss for the area? use same weapon/weapon type, use similar armor Or even a rebellion run, play as a foot soldier and only use standard soldier/knight equipment.
It might have been obvious by now, but if you jump attack while you're plunging attack, you can occasionally double-dip and do some extra damage if the weapon hit box collides with the enemy before the plunging attack animation starts playing. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that the best weapon buff in the entire game is Darkmoon Blade, it has a higher magic adjust with enough Concord Kepts, oh, and you forgot to get Power Within after killing Quelaag man.
Yeah I did make some mistakes so optimized isn’t the right word for this video in hindsight. Working to try and make it a little better when I return to do a DPS run instead of damage only
I'm not even a minute into the video; and I each DO NOT find your speaking voice annoying, DO think this concept seems fun, and might even try this run myself! I'm gonna like and sub even before 0:20 into this video, because I can already see the potential for a good show from someone worth supporting. Stay metal, Trevor.
@@trevthedev6134I just got into the soulsbourne series so I’ve been watching a lot of content (not watching spoilers though). I’ve only got Tomb Of The Giants before I finish DS1. I beat Demon’s Souls first and I didn’t like it at all. It almost discouraged me from the rest of the souls games.
i was 99% sure, darkmoon blade does more damage. Not that those 2 extra dmg would be worth going the route of farming 50 souvenirs from the crows and only having a single cast, and having to switch from int to fth.
Do motion values affect the resulting damage of a weapon after the reduction from defence is calculated, or does it affect the attack before the reduction from defence is calculated??
It is before. So if you are at one of the middle 3 thresholds, the ‘Attack’ rating is modified; e.g., if 2 weapons have the same AR, but a one-handed attack has an MV of 100 and a two-handed attack has an MV of 120, the attack rating in the formula is multiplied and then the damage is calculated. It will vary based on what ‘tier’ of damage you are in, but IIRC a 120 MV will do slightly less than 20 more damage due to the way it works. Maybe I’ll make a video going into damage formulas and MVs? Perhaps that’ll be next as I work on the weapons ranking as I think that will take me more than a week.
@thechosenflutterbox whoops I misspoke. A higher MV will result in a higher damage output compared to the difference in MV. For example, a weapon with an AR of 200 and attacks with MVs of 100 and 150 (IIRC onehanded and two handed attacks from the Balder Side Sword) will result in damage of 137 and 220 on an enemy with 100 defense. So 60% damage increase compared to 50% MV increase
@@trevthedev6134 sweet, thank you 👍 I thought it worked that way cuz two-handing split-damage weapons always dealt more damage than I thought it should so that makes more sense now
With DPS optimization I wonder if it's possible to include attack timing (so, how much time an attack takes (including a bit to run up to hit) and how many of boss's attacks provide required timespan. It is a more specific information though
If you try the opposite of this run. (Worst possible damage/stats) sl1, broken straight sword with no durability, no armor, no shields, no buffs. It sounds like torture but it could be a great challenge
Haha I don’t know if I want to do that. I might do a ‘best-worst’ style run where I still go through the game and get as strong as possible while using the worst damaging weapons outside of meme run weapons (straight sword hilt, broken straight sword, skull lantern, etc.)
@trevthedev6134 yeah, I totally wouldn't wanna attempt the worst damage possible run either. Just a funny idea, I do really like the best-worst damage run idea a lot more.
Is getting a fire enchantment for the zweihander early on not considered a normal run? Or did you just not get it because it would ruin the zweihander later? That's a classic setup for giant dad builds and the plunging attack for an un-upgraded fire zweihander almost oneshots the taurus demon
Mainly just cause I wanted to focus on the raw damage of the weapons. I probably should have stated that at the beginning in hindsight but I’ll try to include some more of that stuff in future videos! My thought was that is is a straight multiplier to any damage, so as like you said it wouldn’t really change the type of weapon.
very interesting run pretty entertaining but there are quite a few asterisks. optimized....but no power within which is a flat damage buff. no RTSR again flat damage buff, no tail weapons even though despite what is said in video they are guaranteed if you want to get them. id love to know how much tail weapons change this run for you. the rest i understand are not what you were going for i just think they defer from the title
"the damage formula is not super complicated" > shows on screen something i couldn't decipher is a million years idk if its because math people are crazy, or i'm just way to much of a human sciences gaal LMAO
Yeah someone else said the same thing. IDK why but I had it in my mind that I needed the master key to get there. Either way at least it was only a single boss!
Hey you know if you’re interested in a ‘oneshot’ in NG +7 I did that to the fire giant. It was Comet Azur however, and I do want to try doing this in Elden Ring at some point when time permits.
This really isn’t optimised. You can’t just ignore the master key and the options it provides and call this mathematically efficient. Not to mention that even without master key you forgot the red tearstone ring, completely ignored power within and totally ignored boss hitzone weaknesses. You took a dozen hits to defeat quellag. It’s entirely possible to two-shot quellag with magic learned from Rickart in new Londo, without using the master key.
Yeah definitely some room for improvements in routing and whatnot. Probably more accurate to say max AR, but 🤷Although fwiw I didn’t want to use magic as it (imo) kind of defeats the purpose of what I was aiming for. Will be the same for a ‘redo’ with optimized dps (and this time I do mean fully optimized lol; AR, max upgrades, rtsr, power within, special weaknesses such as occult or demon, and attacks per second. Lotsa math)
No they can be guaranteed if you close out of the boss fight if they get too low on health. I don't exactly remember why I did that, but I think I was thinking it would be too 'easy' if you will as you can pretty easily mainline Ash Lake to get the greatsword and hit +5 pretty quickly in a new game.

No PNG, an "A" missing. Clearly a thumbnail worthy of 80.000 views.
Brother as soon as you figure out the algorithm let me know lol
Very cool to find a new souls creator, making original content as a newer player to such a relatively old community! Loved this video
You spelled damage wrong in the thumbnail
I love all your unique challenges!
The second range should read:
DMG = _x*( (19.2/49) * (x/D - 0.125)^2 + 0.1 )_
where x is attack and D is defense.
I honestly can barely read my own graphic lol nice catch. I do think I did use that for calcs, although that didn’t ever come into play in this run to my recollection
@@trevthedev6134 gg homie, we appreciate the content
What an amazing idea - and execution - of a video.
You will blow up, no doubts ;)
i did not expect the 2 shot gwyn
Damn i just found you and i was listening blind and i just assumed the bloodborne ones were already out and dark souls 3 .. i check and this video droped like a day ago lmao cant wait to see more!
Holy shit; Joe Rogan playing Dark Souls??
Jokes aside, this was a nice video. I enjoyed your explanations and commentary!
Yeah I made some improvements, mostly along the lines of what you detailed, in my video from yesterday!
Totally deserved the attention this video is getting, it was suggested to me a few days ago and I've been binging your videos as i work since :)
This is an awesome playthrough! I love using mathematically optimal builds in games
I’ll keep it in mind, not a bad idea to throw one up on my next video.
Seeing that absolutely absurd defense formula makes it even funnier that Joseph Anderson got mad at Breath of the Wild and Dragon's Dogma for not working the same way he (thought) DS worked
Quality content!
Only 1k subs? this is good content...
"going to avoid tail cut weapons as they're not guaranteed"
yes they are
also pinwheel that early is absolutely not the intended route, you're directed towards the undead church, and blighttown at the same time, you're only directed towards pinwheel after you get the lordvessel, npcs in the game have dialogue, which you're blatantly ignoring and i'm not sure why
Yeah there were some routing mistakes and it’s probably not ‘optimized’ if you will. Working to make a better path for an optimized dps route instead!
Hey Trev new to your channel and I’m loving your videos!
I hope this video blow up, i find this a really cool idea
This is crazy, I've always gone through with the calculation of "If enemy health >0, bonk"
Truly optimized would be killing Taurus and restarting every time you don't get his axe 😉
All i want in life is a mod that replace sif boss fight with a petting minigame
That misspelling in the thumbnail
“Optimized Damge.
Ha I didn't even notice that and I think you're the first to point it out!
@@trevthedev6134 Umbasa
Cool video! I bet the dps run would be more varied, but I'll wait for your big project instead of trying to figure it out with my smooth brain.
For sure. I think I’ll probably do this in dark souls 3 and go the dps route instead of just raw damage. Will just be a bigger ordeal lol
Cool run, you're making me want to play Dark Souls again. I'm gonna steal some strats and go for big numbers, thanks for the tips
Great! Always a good game to come back to every now and then. Just wait until my next video where I'll have even more numbers!
FYI, darkmoon blade out damages crystal magic weapon. It just requires a significant farm if you don't pvp or dupe the items necessary to +3 the covenant.
It does, but you can’t technically do all bosses and still use it as you break the covenant by killing Gwyndolin.
Is defense like this? A massive piecewise function series like this? Might explain why defense seems to drop off pretty hard after awhile.
Hmm I don’t know if it’s the same exact formula but it’s pretty close. There are definitely some benchmarks you want to hit once you get to certain areas but I’m not sure what they are exactly
Grinding on slimes works a lot better with fire
2h jumping attack is 1.55 mv and has good range, and is good to use in niche timings,
Great info & narration, very chill
Standing next to Quelaag's spider head (between the head and the leg) is actually a mostly safe place, her sword attacks cannot hit you from there Im pretty sure.
At the very least the times Ive stood there she has not been able to.
I actually think it's nice that you didn't use rtsr or pw because those can be a bit tricky to use as a casual player, also it would have been nice to see the damage setup (weapon name, weapon upgrade, buffs) alongside all the numbers on the screen, I know the info is in the voice over but having all the info on screen at all time would make it easier to follow
now I'm jealous I don't have some cool dark souls video ideas like you just to give myself an excuse to replay this game
Yep always working to improve graphics for upcoming stuff! I think throwing important damage stats in the top right will be helpful (did this for the manus catalyst video). I am used to having 99 in everything for my NG+++++++ one shot videos so it didnt really matter there.
5:00 We can not reliably get the master key
THE THIEF STARTS WITH MASTER KEY. You can have bombs and master key, this is common for some glitch set ups.
Also this isn't me trying to call you out. Obviously to do all this maths you're far smarter than I am, but it would be interesting to see this done with the master key and cheesing.
All good, I did a better follow up version with the master key fwiw
Surprised you didn’t use Rickert in the early game since he lets you upgrade before Taurus
You have a very soothing voice, a great companion to my toothache. I’ll stick around for more
Enjoying the video!
This will be part of my upcoming video, but innate weapon damage uses the Motion value of the weapon (so a 2-handed attack would be multiplied by 1.2) where a added buff isn’t multiples at all, so with split damage that is an interesting edge case.
could do a souls mimic challenge, where you pick one of the games and you have to gear yourself to near match the boss for the area? use same weapon/weapon type, use similar armor
Or even a rebellion run, play as a foot soldier and only use standard soldier/knight equipment.
Killer video! Would love to see you do this with ds3
Finishing the video? I would like to say that I would LOVE a video from someone as astute as yourself explaining, and playing an *Old Mundane* build.
This was on my home page!
Haha the algorithm loves Dark Souls doesn’t it?
@@trevthedev6134I just got into the soulsbourne series so I’ve been watching a lot of content (not watching spoilers though). I’ve only got Tomb Of The Giants before I finish DS1. I beat Demon’s Souls first and I didn’t like it at all. It almost discouraged me from the rest of the souls games.
i was 99% sure, darkmoon blade does more damage. Not that those 2 extra dmg would be worth going the route of farming 50 souvenirs from the crows and only having a single cast, and having to switch from int to fth.
Is this optimized enemy damage? That Asylum Demon fight was painful lol
Just joking my dude, awesome video, thank you for sharing!
Hey don’t judge my play style lol. This was right after playing some Elden Ring where I’m more comfortable dodging
@@trevthedev6134 I figured since you were early dodging, it takes a couple hours to get the timing again, been there for sure!
loved the video, do more on dark souls 1 and 2!
u should do this againe but get great club from blight town
@@trevthedev6134 sweet, thank you 👍 I thought it worked that way cuz two-handing split-damage weapons always dealt more damage than I thought it should so that makes more sense now
I like Maths
I Like Dark souls
So glad I found this channel
With DPS optimization I wonder if it's possible to include attack timing (so, how much time an attack takes (including a bit to run up to hit) and how many of boss's attacks provide required timespan. It is a more specific information though
Gotta sub, for the effort and dedication 🤚🏻
They really didn't want mage builds rolling over that dlc 😂
Great video, enjoyed the math :) You just gotta practice those rolls a bit 😅
You forget to use power within
Only at OS I noticed that you lack Power Within.
You can't do mathematically optimized damage without Power Within. (
Yep. I did a redo with DPS instead, should be one of the most recent videos on my channel
Now do mathematically optimized dps by adding the frame data of different r1s to the equation
Is getting a fire enchantment for the zweihander early on not considered a normal run? Or did you just not get it because it would ruin the zweihander later? That's a classic setup for giant dad builds and the plunging attack for an un-upgraded fire zweihander almost oneshots the taurus demon
Did you consider bleed for Dex weapons like the Uchi?
Not really here, was more so just focused on raw damage instead of dps. I will make mention of that in my upcoming go video so stay tuned!
Not that it would change your weapon choices, but is there a reason you didn't use RTSR and Power Within?
Mainly just cause I wanted to focus on the raw damage of the weapons. I probably should have stated that at the beginning in hindsight but I’ll try to include some more of that stuff in future videos! My thought was that is is a straight multiplier to any damage, so as like you said it wouldn’t really change the type of weapon.
@@trevthedev6134 Fair enough. Great vid, can't wait for the next one 👍
Really good buddd!!!
very interesting run pretty entertaining but there are quite a few asterisks. optimized....but no power within which is a flat damage buff. no RTSR again flat damage buff, no tail weapons even though despite what is said in video they are guaranteed if you want to get them. id love to know how much tail weapons change this run for you. the rest i understand are not what you were going for i just think they defer from the title
Great video man
"the damage formula is not super complicated"
> shows on screen something i couldn't decipher is a million years
idk if its because math people are crazy, or i'm just way to much of a human sciences gaal LMAO
Just curious, but for the Taurus demon, couldn’t you have used the blacksmith in new londo ruins?
Yeah someone else said the same thing. IDK why but I had it in my mind that I needed the master key to get there. Either way at least it was only a single boss!
Try beating the game with just dragon weapons. You can use arrows to get the dragon longsword early.
But how fast will this build kill fire giant tho?
Hey you know if you’re interested in a ‘oneshot’ in NG +7 I did that to the fire giant. It was Comet Azur however, and I do want to try doing this in Elden Ring at some point when time permits.
@@trevthedev6134 ok, but do you think this build can kill God skin duo?
interesting premise. earned a sub
Why no power within and RTSR? Did i miss some explanation?

@@trevthedev6134 oh hell yeah!
If it's "mathematically accurate" wouldn't you need to always be in hyper mode?
Yeah I’m working on a redo with dps instead of just damage, should be out today?
try with power within, red tearstone ring and dragon body form =P
power within?
Lotsa math)
He has such a nice voice
Good video 👍
Why aren't tail cut weapons guaranteed? Can too much high damage kill a boss before the tail gets cut?
No they can be guaranteed if you close out of the boss fight if they get too low on health. I don't exactly remember why I did that, but I think I was thinking it would be too 'easy' if you will as you can pretty easily mainline Ash Lake to get the greatsword and hit +5 pretty quickly in a new game.
Who would win in a fight big black dragon or big fuckin stick
optimized damge
This guy maths
No rtsr??
Working on correcting some mistakes for my next video! It will have everything optimized as far as I can manage. Rtsr, power within, master key, etc.
Maybe do a lightsaber (aquamarine dagger) build in ds3
I think I might do a ds3 run at some point upcoming, was thinking a wheel of fate only run (bone wheel shield weapon art)
@@trevthedev6134 💀💀 good luck
