GearAlpha I remember a clip of a tsunami warning in Japan and an anchor said something on the lines of “REMEMBER THE GREAT TSUNAMI/EARTHQUAKE OF 2011!” Like you said, they don’t want a repeat of 2011. Edit: The clip in the video was the one I was referring to. The anchor says “REMEMBER THE GREAT EARTHQUAKE OF 2011!” because of how bad it was. They also, before the Tsunami warning was issued, showed a camera showing the Fukushima-Daichi Nuclear Power Plant, which after the Earthquake & Tsunami in 2011, had a meltdown.
yeah, but imagine how much the japanese people have been through already. shit like this happens to them all the time. they even get north korean missiles flying overhead.
My heart goes out to that Japanese reporter. He was warning about there possibly being a tsunami and the way he started to panic when it was confirmed, the fear in his voice when he said "Protect your Life!" and the way it cut off with the silence with nothing but that god awful sound after gave me chills. Luckily the tsunami was not that bad and nobody died. (Only was about 4 feet) But i hope the people who got hurt in the earthquake are recovering well.
The way he brought up what happened in 2011 as well, and "Ima sugu nigete kudasai!" actually meaning "Please run away right now!"--it really shows how deeply traumatized many people are because of the Tohoku triple disaster, and it's also really sweet in a sad way to hear him caring so much about all these viewers he's never even met.
My older sister was living in Hawaii along with her boyfriend/fiancé at the time of the Toho Earthquake that also triggered the Tsunami. It's a miracle she was okay.
i personally love alerts, they inform me about the world, and i think about what i would do in that emergency. im not saying it's fun, but i'll enjoy the video. *ESPECIALLY* when it's an old clip 🤪
I was woken up by an earthquake in Mexico one night and didn't know what was happening, when the sirens started it was the most terrifying thing ever. Never saw my mother this scared, it's heartbreaking to know that people experience this type of distress and fear for their lifes on a regular basis
In East Germany, Flag Poles fall down due to long winds, and the warning siren kills people, because the border guards (Like me back then in 1965-1989)kill people due to it.
2 things 1: the japan alarm gave me chills because he went from telling everyone to stay calm to shouting at everyone to leave so quickly and of all things REMINDING people of a horrible event in the country's past 2: I used to go to school in Prauge and it was like 200 feet from the air-raid-siren tower. every week they would test it and it scared the living crap out of me (I was 6 at the time) they would also test the broadcast system but only while I was at school, so one day I was sick at home and started crying when I heard it.
This change in tone of the alert is something that Japan introduced in the wake of the 2011 earthquake disaster. News anchors used to report very calmly and politely until that point in order to not create panic. However, it was later suggested that this way of communication did not properly convey the urgency of the matter, allowing people to get complacent and not being able to evacuate in a timely manner. Hence, more strong and direct style of announcing these alerts was introduced.
Old comment but in Prague and basically all of Czech Republic the air raid sirens are located everywhere so there isnt really a place you can go to not hear them other then inside a building that isnt quiet
Japan: "We should use calming tones to not stress people out in an emergency!' America: "haha alert go BEEEEEEEEEEP BEEEEEEEEEP BEEEEEEEEEEP boooooooooooop"
The initial tones sound crazy for a reason. The US system is super low-tech and therefore super robust, so it needs to be able to work with a minimum of data transmission. Those initial three tones carry the "wake-up" signal, the alert type, and location information. They also self perpetuate, which means that if a system misses an initial alert but "hears" those tones from somewhere else it will trigger the full EAS alert. You have to remember, this system does everything from tornado warnings to nuclear attack in the US, so it needs to operate with a minimum of equipment and overhead. Compare that to the Japanese system, which all it does is its one job of earthquake alarm and so can be programmed into pretty much every consumer electronic. They don't have to worry about carrying the location, alert, and type information - it has one job.
The worst part about the American one is that whenever it sounds I can never understand what the voice is saying. I feel like they haven’t updated the voice since the 1980’s.
It’s literally in seconds. When the primary wave is detected, the alerts come on. At this point, most of us will not feel the quake, so it almost seems as if it is predicted. Once the secondary wave is measured, intensity is reported for major cities and geographical locations. It only takes about ten seconds tops until this point. It takes a few more minutes until it is determined whether there is danger of tsunamis.
Yup I remember I'd be watching Disney channel or Cartoon Network and I'd hear the American alert and my TV would glitch and I'd run over to my parents' room
That Japanese one was really upsetting. The newscaster was getting noticeably more freaked out as he went on but still remaining calm, until the "tsunami warning" part
That is intentional. Japan experienced the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami in 2011, which caused many deaths. To prevent this from happening, newscasters make the danger seem imminent in order to incite viewers.
What makes this scary is that the U.S will use this sound whether it’s a big thunder storm or a freaking middle attack. So every time you’re like “omg is it just lots of wind or are we going to get nuked”
I think it depends where you live, because when there was a false missile attack warning [or was it a bomb attack? I can't remember it's been awhile] in my area the alarm sounded similar to Malaysia's siren (17:40) The alarm noise on your phone/tv does that weird beeping thing (0:40) but the city siren is nightmare inducing. Especially sense you could hear multiple city sirens going off at once in combination with the 0:40 one, it sounded like the end of the world.. good thing it was false!
The Japan one is what genuinely unsettled me. It started off as small warning thing, but very quickly escalated into something MUCH bigger. It’s just the panic the guy had shown when he said “Everyone, remember the Great East Japan Earthquake!” Shortly after, “Evacuate immediately!” with the signal being cut out at the end. It sends a chill down my spine.
It gets even more sad when you know the actual meaning of "Ima sugu nigete kudasai"--the subs said "Evacuate immediately", but what he said actually translates to "Please run away right now". He's gone from keeping calm and giving formal instructions to just begging everyone to run for their lives and reminding them of one of the worst natural disasters in the country's history.
I really don't know what's sadder, the alarms for horrific natural disasters or the alarms about war. Both are so chilling, I pray for anyone effected by either, so very scary.
the japan ones are worse irl too because in addition they also have early earthquake alerts on the phones, and in one of the places I lived during late night ones they would send out cars with sirens on them repeating the announcement.
Japan has some anti-earthquake technology in most houses designed to prevent as much shaking and damages as possible. I don't think anti-tsunami is going to be a thing soon.
i mean when you in the pacific ring of fire, then you gotta get used to earthquakes. at least them you can kinda prepare for. meanwhile, you got fucking TSUNAMIS.
ok the Japanese EAS still managed to make me jump, brings back unpleasant memories from 2011 it really doesn’t matter how it sounds, once you experienced a disaster coming after the chime, you’d associate the chime with impending trouble
Whenever my TV freezes, even if I'm not watching live broadcasting, my heart skips a beat or two because I'm terrified that I'm going to get an EAS alert. There's one of my fear for ya! Edit: When the Singapore alarm started, it sounded like it was being bounced between each ear of my headphones, and I swear I actually began moving my head to the tune. Jesus Christ.
Knowing the aftermath (that's the earthquake that wracked their nuclear reactor a few years ago), I think the panic is very justified. ... Edit : So after using Google, it turns out that this isn't the one. The one that wracked their reactor, Great East Japan earthquake was in 2011. But it still showed how much it hurt them.
If people are curious about the "Tsunami alert" sound. That's actually a signal sent to wake up all TVs in the home that feature 1seg technology. Example, your kid is watching the tv in their room and their tv is the only one on, that sound plays and all tv sets in the house with 1seg are activated, letting you know "TSUNAMI! PLEASE EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY! Update: I'm muting notifications for this comment due to all the pings I've been recieving.
freckle face Its fricking scary man, especially the newer Alberta one. When you are sitting listening to music on the radio and all of a sudden an alarm starts blaring, it scares the crap out of you. It does work well though and is very informative.
I was in Israel during the Israel-Gaza war of 2014. There was one afternoon when there was an alarm at 17:01 and another at 17:40, 39 minutes apart. I remember playing an online multiplayer game on my phone then and having to run into the hallway where I had to stay until the alarm stopped sounding. I lost WiFi and I ended up losing the game for running out of time, but at least I didn't lose my life.
So no one's gonna talk about how the Japanese reporter changed from calm to very afraid and panicked as soon as there was a tsunami warning. And how he got cut off at the end... It gives me chills.
The sheer panic in the japanese radio host's voice when he said "PROTECT YOUR LIFE!" before he was cut off actually made me get a sinking feeling in the back of my throat

Absolutely liked how the narrator calmly talks about "theres a possibility a tsunami warning will be out" when there's only an earthquake warning and raised his tone to straight up "THE TSUNAMI WARNING IS OUT!!!! EVERYONE PLS RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!!! PLS REMEMBER THE GREAT EAST JAPAN TSUNAMI!!!!! PLS RUN FOR --" then into rapid urgent morse code that's how u catch people's attention properly
Japan is a smaller area than most so tsunamis could take em out, the worst part is that a sign of a tsunami is an earthquake. (Earthquakes are easier to survive than a tsunami)
The Canada one was creepy last year when there were two murderers on the loose. Our phones went off with warnings, it was scary because my spouse had to work that night and he walked to work. He said no one was allowed outside for their lunch breaks because the whole province was under alert.
@fangirl38 Alberta, Manitoba, but it was Saskatchewan that the killings happened. The other two provinces were on high alert since they didn't know where those guys were.
For anyone that doesn't knows, they use this high pitched noises because: 1- they can be heard from any tv or radio regardless of the device 2- they sound weird and uncomfortable, making everyone around pay attention to it 3- they trigger the "fight or flight" response, which basically triggers a primitive sense of survival, making you not be paralysed by fear and flee away as fast as possible Regardless of the language, its pretty easy for anyone to recognize it is a warning, and that you should go into safety as fast and calm as possible
Oh my god, the Japanese EAS one freaked me out, not because of the tone, but because you can just hear the fear and panic rising in the guys voice as the situation got worse. like seriously "Please remember the Great East Japan Earthquake. Protect your lives." Literal chills. I can't imagine the fear if I was seeing that on TV.
the japanese one went from cute and bubbly to absolutely haunting. the way he acts more and more panicked and starts saying things like "Please remember the Great East Japan Earthquake! Protect your lives!" is terrifying. then his voice cuts off mid way and its just that alarm noise. jesus christ.
" do do do do " TSUNAMI WARNING RUN PROTECT YOUR LIVES OH GO- beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep ( i hope no one died but someone is prob gonna reply and show that people did die right? )

The British system is basically just, “we’ve been nuked, don’t go outside or you’ll probably die, turn off devise to save battery.” That is scary, reminds me of war of the worlds for some reason
Well tbf once you've been nuked, it's all over assuming MAD is followed through. The hopelessness of the message reflects that without explicitly saying it.
《Phoebe》我喜欢你 I mean it’s the most that can really be done. Once the nukes are in the air, that’s it. You’re screwed. The best you can really do as a government is advise your citizens to stay calm, collected, and prepare on the chance they survive instead of having a situation like the Hawaii missile false-alarm
Wait no I never even know we had one dats how dumb they keep us why don’t they teach us dis in school instead of telling us we can get bombed at any moment ?
I cannot stress enough how this video absolutely changed the course of my life I am not the same person I was before I watched this. Emergency Alert Systems my beloved
The Japanese morning show had such a charming intro melody. Also props to the anchor, seems like he switched from routine and was shooting info like a machine gun in an instant.
It's during situations like these that I accept the blunt truth completely. Well, while I'm autistic, I'm not as blunt as most, but when I am blunt, I'm really serious. I don't like being told bluntly about a lot of stuff, but during disasters, that's what I wanna hear. I live in Sweden though, so I won't ever hear that one for sure.
its really strange how (obviously it was made a long time ago, during the cold war where there was nuclear threat, would recommend you research the provisions the uk put in as they are very interesting) the alarm is calm somewhat almost content with what might happen
As an American with some serious anxiety issues (revolving around extreme natural disasters or abductions), the second an alarm goes off I’m screaming, hiding, or crying and shaking. It’s offsetting and places my anxiety at risk of just **boom**ing me right then and there. One time mine went off during class the I felt the vibrations of my phone in silent mode and instantly stopped and started shaking. It was just an amber alert but still-
I actually live in a pretty secure country(Wich is Brazil) I never gone through one of those, I was interested and started to watch videos like this, so that appeared in my recomendations Edit: a earthquake happened in Bahia, the magnitude was 4.5, everyone is fine, even though Brazil don't have tectonic plates near it

Usually that is not the case, it just happened to be bad timing.

For anyone that doesn't knows, they use this high pitched noises because:
1- they can be heard from any tv or radio regardless of the device
2- they sound weird and uncomfortable, making everyone around pay attention to it
3- they trigger the "fight or flight" response, which basically triggers a primitive sense of survival, making you not be paralysed by fear and flee away as fast as possible
Regardless of the language, its pretty easy for anyone to recognize it is a warning, and that you should go into safety as fast and calm as possible
Also, It Helps The Broadcast Decode Everything.
