  • This scene is an extract from critically acclaimed animated series 'Cowboy Bebop.' The extract is from 'Episode 24 - Hard Luck Woman' and plays to the popular Cowboy Bebop track "Call Me Call Me." The song includes vocals performed by Steve Conte, lyrics written by Tim Jensen, and music by Yoko Kanno. This track is available on the third Cowboy Bebop OST, 'Cowboy Bebop - Blue' and the 'Limited Edition Boxset - Disc 3.' A live version is available on 'Limited Edition Boxset - Disc 4.'
    In this video a higher quality CD audio version of "Call Me Call Me" was used and the volume adjusted so the music would play at a consistent volume throughout.
    Cowboy Bebop is a Japanese animated TV show from 1998, directed by Shinichirō Watanabe, written by Keiko Nobumoto, and produced by publisher Sunrise. Cowboy Bebop is the product of the contributions of 'Hajime Yatate,' a pseudonym for the collective contributions of Sunrise animation staff.

      My theory is that he doesn't actually hate those things, but he hates that he cares about them

    • @xieotv2386

      He does hate them he hates loss, connections mean losses. He left bossy women in his past behind, children are responsibility and he "wants" to be free of those, pets usually don't live longer than a decade which again means loss of a connection. The whole series is about the characters not confronting their past and as the story goes on they all do and make the choice to grow instead of stand still. This is made evident in jets episode and this one. You can choose to be stuck in the past and avoid it but ultimately it will drag you back in one way or another. This is shown in a lot of well known media and in the last few episode you see spike come to terms with this and decide to move forward and confront the past that's caught up to him.

    Its amazing how nobody talks about Ein, the damn pet also had second thoughts about leaving the Bebop. The dog had good memories in that ship, it's just that it was with Ed the most and the logical thing for the dog was to go with who it was closest the most. Even with that logical choice, that slight second guessing showed that Ein was indeed a member of the Bebop.

      +Behonkiss I think it's because of their expressions, they seem very bittersweet having after having shared a portion for each member of the Bebop. Members they were initially reluctant to take with them. Boiled eggs in that amount are hard to eat, you're almost choking them down. Kinda reminds me of Viktor in the Terminal when he eats that first burger from change he's managed to grub up. Nothing is as soul crushing as having to choke down a reluctant meal when you're all alone in the world.

    The moment they show Spike looking at Ed’s graffiti really hits you cause Spike started the show saying he hates women kids and animals... but you can clearly see here that he’s affected by Ed’s departure, even though he doesn’t say anything.
    Cowboy Bebop is so heartbreaking because the crew had so much potential, they got thrown together randomly based on ridiculous events and even though they acted like they didn’t really care about each other we saw them getting closer and closer throughout the series. They made a great team, they literally felt like a family. And then you can’t do anything but watch as they’re ripped apart, but honestly they all kinda do it of their own volition. The lack of permanence and more realistic ending really punches you in the gut.

    I remember when you posted this video, 14 years ago... and it still makes me emotional. It’s crazy to think, but I’ve honestly lost count of the number of times I've watched this show. My first time was in 1999 right after it came out, and I've watched it at least once a year, every year since. It truly is one of my favorite pieces of media (art) of all time.
    I look in the mirror these days and can’t believe how old I am. How time flies. But when I watch Bebop, it’s like I have Spike’s eye, and am still living in the past. Never do I feel so much conflict internally when I’m watching. So much joy, so much sadness. For the characters and myself.
    Holy shit. I really did carry that weight…

    This scene is gorgeous: Everyone in the beebop is attached to the past, except for Ed. She was the obly one that didn't think on the past but on building her own future. The beebop was not for her, and Ein knew that feeling too. See you cowgirl, someday, somewhere...

  • @PatrickDAllen1
    @PatrickDAllen1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +386

    This whole scene is sad, but watching Faye etch the outline of her bed in the ground and lie on it as the realization that her entire past is gone always gets to me so hard and beautifully.
    You know, this scene is about discovering who your true family is. Ed discovers that it would be best for her to return to her father and so she does. Even though it is hard for her to leave the Bebop, she knows it is where she truly needs to be.
    Faye realizes that her entire past is now gone forever, and her true family is in fact, Jet and Spike who have given so much to her. So just like Ed, she discovers where she truly belongs, and it is with the crew of the Bebop who have truly given her more than she feels she deserves. Just take her entire attitude shift in the last two episodes. She goes from a literal bitch who tries to con Spike and Jet multiple times, to being willing to put herself in harms way to protect them. Just as most would with their loved ones

    • @RodrigoTP315
      @RodrigoTP315 6 ปีที่แล้ว +62

      Actually i always had a different ideia of Ed in this episode. Well, the whole series is about dealing with the past. In Ed's case she wants to find and get closer again with her father, thats why she joined the Bebop. In this episode she indeed find her father, but at the same time realizes why she was left alone, as her father is more interested in the objects falling from the sky.
      So, not needing the Bebop crew anymore and being, as before, distant from her father (emotionally) she decides to take her own path. Away from bebop and father.
      Thats how I see this episode, and in the end is way more intense, because after all se finds herself alone to find her future.
      Srry for bad english.

      @@RodrigoTP315 I agree I think Ed was really disappointed when she finally saw her father. And then he was so quick to leave her again (what a crappy guy). When she left Bebop and took Ein with her, to me that symbolized her starting over to discover herself and take a new journey.

    • @ill_bred_demon9059
      @ill_bred_demon9059 5 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      Exactly. Faye has been abused and she reflexively conditions herself to think Jet and Spike don't care about her. She's held on to the belief that if she regains her memories there will be a whole life, friends and family waiting for her, only to discover she's too late; it's all gone. Watching her trying to protect Spike in "Pierot le Fou" and the final episode where she fires the gun in the air as Spike goes on his suicide mission always makes me sad as it is her desperate attempt to establish a family of choice, only to see it disappear right before her eyes.

    I think with the eggs, the reason as to why Spike and Jet eat all of them alone is because they've physically and mentally decided to leave Faye and Ed behind, with Faye out chasing ghosts and Ed and Ein leaving on their own accord.
    Of course, in the following episode, we see Jet and Spike alone on Mars drinking at Loser Bar, implying that this was their Ozymandias moment, because while they didn't have a lot monetarily, they had a family, and it was through everyone's decisions to chase the past that they've lost what they've gained and taken for granted.
    I finally want to mention Ed's pinwheel. On the surface, it's a nice parting gift to Spike she found, possibly to thank him and Jet for her time on the ship and being given this amazing opportunity, however, I think the pinwheel represents the crew going in circles. The entire show we've seen adventure after adventure where the crew goes after bounty after bounty to no avail, and it happens all of the time. If nothing changed, and if the crew didn't confront themselves about the past and start living in the present and looking to the future, then they will continue to go in circles ad infinitum.
    Ein was the only one out of the entire crew that wasn't chasing any sort of ghost. While it could mostly be because he was a dog, he decided to live in the present and look to the future, and he decided to leave with the only crewmate that didn't just treat him like a dog, but like a friend and a companion. And while at the end of the episode he and Ed were both hesitant about him going, he knew that whatever long or treacherous adventure was in front of Ed, she couldn't do it alone.

I came here to say that even tho I'd score the series as a whole with an 8 out of 10, this scene right here might be the most beautiful, emotional, perfect scene I've ever seen in any anime. Faye dealing with her past, Spike and Jet dealing with not seeing Ein or Ed anymore, and finally Ein wanting to leave with Ed. Plus the beautiful sunset art and this song. Absolutely majestic.
