My theory: after some years ed becomes older and more mature after leaving the bebop and became a bounty hunter and called herself the "cowgirl hacker" as a nickname
I just love how Spike and Jet are blown away by the thought of Ed having a father. It's as if they just assumed she was a science experiment gone wrong.
I think the writter thought its best to end her story that way. She deserves a normal life and bounty hunting isnt best for her welfare as a child of her character, but yes its still sad. Although at the end of that particular episode its said "see you again cowgirl" or somthing like that so i look forward seeing her in the next season if ther will be.
@@robertflinch2447 well I'd imagine that the spinoff would take place years afterwards with a much more mature version of Ed. She's still childish (having never really grown up in a disciplinary environment) but is also a serious figure. Maybe a mix between faye spike and Jett? She'd get her fighting style, cool headness from spike, the con-lady attitude of faye, and the leadership and knowledge of Jett I mean it writes itself
There was always something special about Ed in the dub. Normally when they try to dub an energetic kid they always sound annoying. But Ed's voice actress manages to keep the voice consistently fun and playful instead of straight up aggravating.
The Bebop crew is literally a dysfunctional family. Jet is the stubborn dad, Spike is the laid back uncle, and Faye is the aunt that shows up every once in a while and gives bad advice.
Shaggy Rogers No yeah, if she was meant to be a guy but ended up being a girl, then she’s a girl. Her original concept doesn’t change the final product.
Those final moments of episode 24 are to me is the saddest in the entire show. The sunset marking the end of the crews time together, Spike and Jet eating quietly with plates set for five, Ed taking one last look before happily running off, all while that song plays. It so somber yet beautiful on so many levels. To Ed it's a lot easier to see people come and go because she's young and free spirited. She might not even see this as a true farewell but an until next time. But to Spike, Jet and the audience we know that we may never see her again and it's heartbreaking. Perfectly showing how when your older, it's a lot harder for people to get close and leave without leaving scars. The start of a new adventure for Ed but the end is near for bebop crew and our time with them.
Excellent breakdown. Perfectly in line with theory that spike considers the whole series a dream. Before, he was in the syndicate. Dreaming throughout the series. He has a close friend, a woman he cares about, a kid and a dog as well as a place to call home and a hotrod ie the typical societal measure of success. But then he must wake up and deal with the reality of Vicious and the syndicate.
19:12 is the line that singlehandedly convinces me that Ed's bizarre antics are at least in part an act, and that this is a rare moment where she is being completely genuine, especially given that it's one of the only times where she speaks in first person.
That scene at 3:47 is fucking hysterical to me, it's like Spike and Jet were convinced she had been hatched out of an egg or something instead of actually having been born lmao Plus "Thanks for taking care of my son! Or... was it my daughter?" had me deceased
I think the show heavily implies that the main reason of her behaviour is the fact that she grew up mostly alone. No one taught her how to act like a "normal" person, so she just formed her personality in a way she wanted. She's not worrying about anything, she just enjoys life, like children do. But in real life, children go to school, starts having responsibilities, etc. and grows out from this phase. But in the world of Cowboy Bebop, it's not how it works, at least for Ed, who never had to face these things.
Ed is not a tragic character herself. Her arc is, however, heartbreaking. Thematically throughout the series, each main character ventures off at various points to explore their own backstories and thus, their motives. Faye seeks understanding of who she once was in hopes of finding a community, or at least a better version of herself than the chain smoking, gambling con artist she's had to become to survive a world she was thrust into. Jet must close the book on a love lost and accept reality as it is, that both his partner and his former lover either betrayed him or left him behind for a different life. Spike chases the ghosts of a past that haunts him, attempting to rewrite or rectify history and hanging on to the slimmest of hopes that a happy life with Julia could work. Ed's lone solo adventure? An effort to find food for the team and make the people she loves happy. The other three are embroiled in their past, of which Ed isn't burdened by at such a young age. She lives strictly for the present, a child-like trait that ultimately leads her to view a careless, absentee father with optimism and love that isn't deserved. Ed's father does not remember where he left her years ago, questions his memory of his own child's gender and at the first sign of a selfish desire (the meteor landing), he abandons Ed without hesitation once again immediately after being reunited from a 7-year absence. Yet, one understands the desire to seek love from a toxic family member, especially considering Ed has lived her life without a blood relative present. The tragedy of Ed is two-fold, in that we can foresee a future of happy-go-lucky Ed being repeatedly disappointed by her father until she becomes jaded and cold like the rest of the Bebop crew, and that her desire to be loved by her shitty father is what pulls her away from her true family, the Bebop crew themselves. Beauty lies in the optimism and potential of youth, however. Even though the end of session 24 brings me to tears every time as I hope Ed will turn back and race into the arms of the Bebop crew with Ein nipping at her heels, it's an emotional high note feeling like she is setting sail on the adventure of growing up and trailblazing her own story. We just feel hollow at the same time, wishing she was doing so alongside Jet, Faye and Spike too. =( See you, cowgirl, someday, somewhere!
I don't think Ed is bothered by her fathers absence in the least. Nor will she ever be later in life, I think. It isn't her youth that prevents her from being angry at her father, it's her worldview in general. You're projecting values onto a very strange person who definitely 100% does not see the world the way you or I do. Ed is... unique... mentally. As is her father. For Ed, her eccentricity is only charming/annoying and doesn't interfere with her living a full life. For her dad, the 'family madness' seems to be a prison. She tricks everyone into tracking him down (suggesting she could have found him at any time.) Yet her motivation is straightforward and simple. To say hi to him and introduce her friends. That's it. No revenge. Not so much as a dirty look. She has a brief but very joyful reunion with him (suggesting their relationship is positive) and then they part ways. Likely Ed will track him down again to say "Hi" at some point in the future, with no ill will towards him at all. The woman who runs the orphanage obviously thinks he's a terrible father (for good reason) but Ed's dad is just as strange and abnormal as his daughter is. You call his desires selfish. Can a crazy person be selfish? I'm not sure anything the insane do can be attributed to normal emotions and desires. The world they inhabit is not the one we do. The man makes useless maps that must be constantly updated on a daily(?) basis. I doubt anyone is buying them. What would be the point? Yet he pursues it obsessively, dedicating his entire life to it. He obviously loves his daughter but can't seem to focus on her (or anything besides his maps) for very long. Which suggests mental illness rather than willful abusiveness. There's obviously a story behind how such a nutcase had a child to begin with and why he is the way he is, but the mystery is part of Ed's appeal and it definitely wasn't meant to be solved. Mr. Appledairy(?) handing Spike his ass in a fight with hilarious ease adds further to the mystery. It leaves the audience wondering: "Who the hell is this guy? He's a badass. Why is he also such a nut?" We're not meant to know though, only wonder. For all we know that guy isn't even really Ed's dad, just some guy she arbitrarily decided should be. It would still be in-character for her.
Just, on the topic of Ed's father "forgetting" their gender, I think he's genuinely confused as to how Edward identifies because they seem to be genderfluid. I don't think that aspect is necessarily toxic.
After her dad forgot her again, it hurt her deep but lovingly so in her nature? may-b she decided to stay in land to may-b wait for him to come around again , not knowing the outcome* but willing & hopes to finally be with him till the end. Or to stay with that nun and not starve because of the good food, but i think it has to do a lot with her pop's. But she left a nice good bye to bebop with the pin wheels. I was deeply sadden when i saw her departure in 2002-03? when it used to air in toonami :P But i think now i understand. I had a deep crush on Jet lol xD I'm sure ed would have loved you as a buddy @CaveLombax
18:43 Even though her Dad was kind of a rubbish person I still think this is one of the cutest moments in the entire show. Even if for a few seconds they were having fun they were still bonding like father and daughter should.
And also can we talk about how much of an absolute UNIT her dad was? He was putting up a fight against Spike without breaking a sweat and he was swinging around a 13 year old girl like it was nothing
I think this part just shows how related they are. The way they played around so chaotically and with no injury, that can only be done if they were father and daughter.
That catch was so perfect, it makes you want to forgive the sudden scale problem where Appledelhi is suddenly normal adult height instead of a giant that towers over Spike.
She will always be. Ed is chaos, insanity and genius. She is the spark of imagination, luck incarnate. Nothing can affect Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivruski the Fourth person, because she is, in each and every sense of the word, free.
The huge difference is the voice actor’s voice is actually very easy to listen to, adorable, making even the silliest whimsical loud irrational things they say fun and you want more, while the live action voice had me annoyed immediately.
The English dub voice actress for Radical Edward actually released an album called "Avignon." She's an amazing singer. Her voice was literally pleasing to listen to.
the live action actress tried her best with what she was given but what she was given was terrible. It was like they had all the ingredients for Ed, but no one knew how to cook XD
I thought they did an amazing job on live action Ed given how difficult that role would be to cast. I'm astounded they didn't pick a brown actress since they do that for all redheads now and Ed is brown already. It was the least Netflixy thing I've ever seen them do. on the other hand she had shoes on, and her goggles were sized wrong.
The world should try to be more like Ed. She cares but doesn’t take things too seriously. My favorite moment of Ed is when she ate that terrifying alien from the fridge because “she was hungry”.
@@zhanefulp my bad. I was just saying also, cause I was told most people don't know what she was. Also someone said she was supposed to be a boy but they changed it. And for the record, her voice actress is amazing.
She occasionally doesn't. Like when she reunites with 'the father-person', and he headbutts Spike, she says "No, these are Ed's friends, I stay with them, okay?"
Eds English voice actress did an incredible job. I praise her performance up and down, and wouldn't change it for the world. Its a staple in my nostalgia and present praise. But I had this dream a few days ago, it was like a regular Cowboy Bebop adventure, I was either Spike or Jet, maybe both, it was foggy, and with Faye and Ed on a mission. and Ed was speaking pure Japanese, and everyone could understand her except me, while they themselves were speaking in English. and no one else acknowledged she was speaking Japanese, there weren't subtitles or anything. So I'm struggling to do this mission while concealing my confusion, and having little to no idea of what Ed is saying. After I woke up, I started to wonder what the series would be like if Ed's voice acting were in Japanese while everyone else were in English. I think I might do an edit of just that for an episode.
A bilingual anime might be difficult but doesn't sound too far off. Also, I can't picture anyone that can replicate the same hyperactive, maniac, and goofy voice as hers.
Hmm, Interesting... Anymore interesting dreams you'd like to catalog? I barely can remember some of mine! There has to be some tricks to come back to those good dreams.
Yeah I love the Japanese voice and sub anime in general because of nostalgia (dubs just never sit right with me for whatever reason) but this is the most seamless, least jarring English dub I think I’ve ever heard
amadeus999 "very few" Assassination Classroom One Piece Pokemon Dragon Ball Z Kai My Hero Academia Jo Jo Bizarre Adventure Hunter X Hunter Yu Yu Hakusho One Punch Man Naruto/Shippuden Fairy Tail honestly it's so dumb how people say sub is superior when they can't even understand they're language for shit
17:04 is as subtle character development as it gets: Jet telling Ed to quit whining and Ed immediately clamming up "alright". She really got used to them as a family
A Cowboy Bebop live action Netflix series has been announced recently. It'll suck so badly, and one thing's for sure, they'll never be able to adapt Ed properly.
i always like how ed served as a nice contrast, a childlike innocence among the cloud of gloom onboard the bebop. she's not bound by her past like the rest of them (or ABSENCE of a past in the case of faye) and when she leaves you can immediately tell that things are going to get much more serious, and much darker. and indeed they do.
She reminds me of a human version of GIR from Invader Zim, by the way she acts and then the voice actor that's voicing her sounds like Gaz a little bit, like a happy Gaz voice too me
i discovered cowboy bebop because my dad showed it to me saying i reminded him a lot of her, and honestly she’s quickly became one of my favorite characters of all time :)
@a HERO that doesn’t know what protect means there’s just something u can’t translate at all into live action, here the quirky personality of Ed is cute and likable because it’s anime, but it’s just cringe af in live action
Faye and Jet would probably marry and have kids who Ed can find along her adventure. Better put the old characters on the shelf before someone broke them if you know what i mean.... except Ed ofc, too much potential.
@@bookoo9313 I think they could have done better than they did though. Sure they'd need to dial her back... but they could have. But nope. We got the most obnoxious scene ever. It broke my heart so bad seeing them butcher my child.
Some things just dont work well in a live action environment. From what I've seen, the movie did try to recreate Ed's character faithfully, but this way of talking just doesn't work outside of anime which is why I hate live action adaptations of anime.
@@Sancnea it's mostly americans yrying to do live actions of anime... they can't grasp the authenticity of the anime itself, it's all superficial and motivated by what the audience would want instead of being loyal to the anime.

I think we can all agree that after both the disasters known as the Live-Action Cowboy Bebop & Death Note, any anime series that Netflix can get their hands on and turn it into a live-action series/film is guaranteed to become shit. At this point, I don't have a whole lot of faith in the upcoming live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series.
I didn't start tearing up a bit until I saw Ed's message and her walking away. Everything about this series is legendary. So many elements to it though with the pinwheel as well.
my favorite line from the whole show is "if you see a stranger, follow him" caught me so off guard I wish we got more of Ed's interesting speech patterns.
Ah, Edward; all the tech savvy of Izzy from Digimon, all the mad ravings of Ed from Ed Edd n Eddy, as well as the sporadic movement... And I loved every minute of it! She's like if Pinkie and Izzy from Total Drama had a kid!
I watched it subbed first too but then I watched the dubbed and the dub is better imo. I also heard the creator of Cowboy Bebop prefers the dubbed too.
For those of you asking about Ed's gender, part of the point of the character is that her "identity" labels are super ambiguous, and consequently, meaningless. They're just that: labels. Think about all the different names she has, especially in Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV, each of which comes from a different language. Within the universe of the story, it shows that the advancements of the far future have made seemingly fundamental features of identity totally empty (where you're from, your race, your gender, your family, etc.). For us in the audience, it implies that these things were always meaningless. This contributes to the larger themes of existential angst/depression/ennui in Cowboy Bebop. This sense of being lost, depersonalization, having no home, alienation, isolation etc. Now, contrast this idea of meaningless "identity" with Actual Personality. Despite having no traditional signifiers of "who" she is, Edward obviously stands out as the strongest, most fascinating person in the bunch. Why else would 700K people watch a 20 minute compilation of her? Who you are isn't what categories you fit under. It's what you do, what you love, what you feel. You are how you live.
Edward was turned into a girl to even the gender ratio on the Bebop, which was, with Ed as a boy, three guys and one girl. This original character design appears in session 5, stealing a clearly adult magazine from Annie's bookstore by smuggling it under his shirt.
Nicely said. I generally felt like the whole show had an undertone revolving around this depression of the future. How there are probably hundreds of billions of people, hundreds of habitable planets, and you just can't keep track of all the things happening anymore. The vast size of the universe seems to devour you... So you start to float, and to solely live in the present, because that's all that really matters in the end.
It really seem like a lot of people get "angry" about mentioning Ed is a girl.. but you're right, that is not the point. Edward is EDWARD. I always loved that Ed was just Ed hah.

Kenon Hinokami i love rocket and groot so i freaking screamed when i heard you say that

I just wanna adopt Ed. She's so damn funny and her English Voice actress was absolutely incredible. Why did it she stay with the Bebop? Sigh.
She seems like a handful
***** perhaps, but I'm a very placid person, so I think I could hack it.
I think she left with Ein to make her own way in life. Get into all sorts of trouble and mischief

@@minorcomet282 i mean if Ed's father would figth vs Vicious instead of Spike. All bebop familly will eat snake with eggs for dinner
That catch was so perfect, it makes you want to forgive the sudden scale problem where Appledelhi is suddenly normal adult height instead of a giant that towers over Spike.
Oh ed i hope she's okay wherever she is

- Edward
I wasn't expecting Ed's voice to fit all that well in the dub, but this quickly changed my mind! Melissa Fahn did great!
Cowboy Bebop is the only anime I prefer the English dub on.

@@zhanefulp my bad. I was just saying also, cause I was told most people don't know what she was. Also someone said she was supposed to be a boy but they changed it. And for the record, her voice actress is amazing.
@@trickniggajoe4041 Yep, Melissa Fahn is one of the all time greats.
19:11 She didn't speak in 3rd person
The English dub along with Dragonball Z are my favorites.
Question,
How did you know she was speaking japanese if it was in your dream and you cant understand Japanese?
That sounds like an interesting thing

i always like how ed served as a nice contrast, a childlike innocence among the cloud of gloom onboard the bebop. she's not bound by her past like the rest of them (or ABSENCE of a past in the case of faye) and when she leaves you can immediately tell that things are going to get much more serious, and much darker. and indeed they do.

Thank you
Edward was turned into a girl to even the gender ratio on the Bebop, which was, with Ed as a boy, three guys and one girl.
