It's my FAVORITE time of year where I get to reflect back on the last 12 months of gear reviews, testing phases & trends. Let's talk about my favorite GEAR OF THE YEAR! Also, comment with YOUR favorite pieces of gear from 2020 - I know there will be a ton that didn't make my list but still deserves a mention. If you want to support the channel and get more info about any of the gear I chat about today, check the affiliate links in the description or head to your local running store!

Trying out the Peg Trail 2 tomorrow for the first time. Loved the Peg Trail 36 and love my Peg 37. That React foam feels softer out of the box vs other React foam shoes. Excited!

I watched a couple of your vids my senior year of high school back in 2015 during my last cross country season & when I went off to college I was too busy (binge drinking) & stopped running, completely forgot about this channel, & recently stumbled across one of your videos again after all these years & I’m taking up running again. Cheers

Finally gave into road running after much shoe testing: Torin 4
Still use cheap amazon liner shorts w/ pockets and UA's speed pocket shorts for just phone-carry only runs.
Asics singlets for Summer. TSLA long sleeve base wintergear for Winter. UA's long bottom base heatgear for Winter.
    Trails: Timps 1.5
    Harder trails/training: Lone Peak 3s/3.5s
Carry: Flip belt plus zipper + Flip belt bottle / UD's Halo vest
Filter: Befree - interchangeable with UD's original soft flasks.
Fuel: giant bag of Roctane for less trash waste.

I 2nd the Saucony Endorphin Speed is such a fun shoe with a great price. Problem with a lot of the Carbon plated shoes. The price makes you not want to not waste them on normal training miles. The Endorphin speed is in my normal rotation and not reserved for races.

My favorite piece of aparel has been my Uyn Visyon longsleeve shirt. It's technically a base layer, but works really well in those conditions where short sleeves are a bit too cold but you run warm with true winter gear. It's merino wool, wicks well, dries fast and is just super comfortable. I've been running in it on long days where the mornings are cold and day-time temperatures stay below 10C and it's just been fantastic. Easily my go-to shirt of colder autumn, winter and spring days. It's an expensive shirt, but you can find it at reasonable discounts in Europe at least. They make great socks too.
My backpack of choice has been the Nathan Vaporkrar 2.0, but only because I got it at a 30% discount sale. Bought it based on Ethan's review on this channel and it's been my go-to pack for literally everything. I haven't touched my Salomon ADV Skin 12 the entire year. I'm now combining it the with Compressport Free Belt Pro. Just great with plenty of storage for nearly all events.
Fully agreed on the Petzl Iko. Fantastic piece of kit. I find the medium setting to be plenty good for night time trail running. My favourite trail running shoes have been the Saucony Peregrine 10's. Allround good shoes. Not as good all the Nike Terra Kiger 4's but they've been the only pair of shoes that have come close. The best budget item would be the BTR reflective gilet. Really inexpensive, comfy and super high vis.

FYI, the TNF jacket is not shakedry (unless you mean you can just shake it off to shed water, but there is a TM'd tech called shakedry now), which is a goretex technology, TNF developed their own technology (Futurelight, in the name) which is a laminate material they are using in their highest end jackets. Very similar in performace to Futurelight is Polartec NeoShell, another spectacular laminate material. Both are very good in the breathability category, while being waterproof.

    • @MrHajime00
      @MrHajime00 3 ปีที่แล้ว

agreed chris. thank you for the video. i am also checking this category jacket every year. Past 2 years, i thought you selected Arc NORVAN SL HOODY. That was expensive and also shake-dry. Because this single layer gore material, it will not last long. therefore, it is more investment. it will fit your comments this year. i just wonder if you select best gear this year is north-face future lights or arc one? if you think north is good, then i may try it.

My favourite gear item has not changed in six years: it's the Patagonia Houdini jacket. Feather-light and packs down small enough to go in a pocket, yet has excellent wind proofing and very water resistant (not waterproof). I use it regularly on trail runs in Spring and Autumn and also around town as a "just in case" shell (I live in the UK so always need to be prepared for rain!). If anyone is interested in one you probably need to size up, especially if layering at all underneath.

Skechers Gorun 7+ for my favorite road shoe for 2020.
    I can’t say there’s a 2020 favorite trail shoe, since I’m still rocking HOKA Evo Mafate 2 and Evo SG...and Torrent 1s.
Also, Liquid IV hydration multiplier and their energy multiplier 😍

I second Path Projects as a brand. A bit boutique to what I'm used to buying in terms of clothes (I tend to lean towards budget items and secondhand store stuff), but I have took a dive with a pair of their running shorts this year and heck are they good.

Great to see the Rincon 2 win best road shoe, I have the Rincon 1 and have done about 800km in them now. The exposed EVA has some wear but the uppers are still holding up well and that Rincon ride still a joy! Great content as always!

I still carry my Katadyn filter flask on all my mountain runs and use it frequently in the summer. This separate cap looks like a nice way to just lose some weight of an extra flask when I already carry them.
My trail shoe of the year is recent to me: Salomon Sense Ride 3. It's just a long day in the mountains champ! I've really moved away from overly cushy Hokas for trail runs and fully embraced Salomons for the best fit, stability and responsiveness.

Having run for over 30yrs and had so many running shoes, I cannot speak highly enough about the Nike Pegasus Trail 2 - it is simply an amazing shoe, I can't see past it, it does everything so well. I just hope Nike doesn't mess around with it as they may have just invented the best door to trail shoe ever with this one.

I loved running in saucony endorphin speed, but the were too narrow in toebox. My favorite this year is still Rincon. I found my self loving to run in New Balance Beacon v3 also, great shoe. Remind me a little of Rincon.

Thanks for posting another gear review! I've enjoyed the Science is Sport gels more than the Spring Energy because they are isotonic and have many more flavors. I still find the Salomon Adv Skin 12 to be my go to for longer runs/races cause of the extra storage/zipper in back as well as extra zipper in front. The Salomon Quiver attached to the back and Black Diamond Carbon ZZ trekking poles all seem to fit together nicely (essentially like you no change with vest in 2020...this will be my gear for Hardrock, if race happens).

I do enjoy the looks of the Speed - the new Pegasus Trail 2 colorways are pretty spicy too!

Wow that Solomon filter is a redesign of the kadadyn one that fits the hydra pack thread size. Looks slimmer than the other. Does Salomon still uses hydrapak for their bladders 🤔

Thanks a lot for this great list! If I could add one item to the list it would be the Insta360 GO in the gadget category. It's a crazy lightweight and portable camera for those runners who don't like bringing their phone and I've been using it nonstop for sharing my runs to Instagram and TH-cam.

An interesting list as always. I had an earlier Altra Olympus and the upper separated from the sole really prematurely, so I never looked at Altras again. It looks like it’s time to give them another chance

Have you tried out more of Arcteryx's shoes? Last year I bought the LD2's, partly on your recommendation, and while I agreed with your later comments about loose heal fit, etc., I did find their overall fit to be good enough and the traction to be awesome for winter running on the wet and woody trails of Vancouver's North Shore. My biggest gripe however was that they kinda fell apart after less than 200ish kms. Now trying our their beefier VT2s, which although heavier, provide good fit (at least for me!) and amazing traction which just lets me plough through wet woodwork and rocks. In contrast, my Timp 2's seem better suited for summer running when traction is less an issue. PS, ditto on the Salomon XA filter!

11.6oz is just way too much even for a highly cushioned shoe. Evo speedgoat and evo mafate will always be my favourites

@@bikeinmotion true, it’s heavy but the space, especially the room up front, ticks all the right boxes... but it’s a close call against the speed goat 4 in wide ... (personally)
