  • April 4th was the birthday of the goddess Mazu 媽祖, also known as the empress of Heaven (Tian Hou). The event was celebrated by the Ci Bei Mazu Temple 慈悲媽祖宮 in Singapore in style. The main events were a hot oil ceremony known as an 'oil wok ritual' where spirit mediums and followers put their hands in boiling oil with medicinal herbs, and the oil is later given to the elderly to be used on painful joints, and the crossing of the Peace Bridge (Ping An Qiao) to bring good luck. Before the public crossed the bridge, spirit mediums trancing deities including Sun Wu Cong 孫悟空 (Monkey God), Qing Shui Zhu Shi (清水祖師), Ji Gong 濟公 (12th Century Monk), Xuan Tian Shand Di 玄天上帝 (Lord of the Dark Heavens), Zhong Tan Yuan Shai 中壇元帥 (San Tai Zi三太子 after promotion), performed self-flagellation with weapons including knives, swords, a ball of nails and other traditional ritual implements both in front of, on and behind the bridge. The fundamental purpose of this was to scare away any malevolent spirits from the ritual area before the public crossed the bridge. By inflicting self-flagellation, the spirit mediums take on the spiritual power of the Heavenly armies to combat evil forces on Earth.
