Wow. Can you imagine hearing this for the first time like I did when I was 14 in 1964? I'm not saying I was hip or anything like that but this blew me away. I had never heard anything remotely like it in my life. The Animals and the Stones and the Beatles were just picking me up and swinging me around in the air! You hardly had time to breath back then there was so much new music coming out. From 64 to 69 was one hell of a ride. Maybe a time like that is coming again? Is it now? I don't know. But I find it heartwarming to see some of the young people giving a listen to our music back then. I've listened to one hell of a lot of blues from the 1900s on up and one of the best is (1970) Led Zeppelin's "Since I've Been Loving You."
Likewise, I was living in Manchester at that time and getting blown away every week it seemed with something new being broadcast by the pirate radio stations like Radio Caroline. The BBC just refused to play anything wilder that George Formby. How lucky were were to be in the middle of such a revolutionary upheaval in music.
@@grahamyates2490 Everybody wanted to be a rock and roller after these groups started putting out music. Eric Burdon had such a powerful voice and he was only limited by the microphone level. He could have sung without a microphone and still be heard in the back on an auditorium. I remember pirate radio stations in England. We in the States thought it was just terrific that these ships were broadcasting from off the coast. Great time to be alive.
It's even more amazing when put into perspective. They had to do this in one take, they didn't have the money for a second try, and this was all before the fancy machines which help change your voice and alters it to stay smooth.. This is pure raw in one run..
Actually this was live but on the Ed Sullivan show which had super strict guidelines about movement of the body. I don’t know if this was before or after the Elvis debacle but if it was after then that would explain the stiffness. They were far more animated in concert settings.

This is from a British movie called Pop Gear (in the U.S it was called Go-Go Mania). It's a collection of filmed performances of various British bands of the period performing their big hits. Most of them never crossed over, but of course The Animals did. They're all shot, staged, and lit really interestingly. It's actually a beautiful movie to watch. Coming out on BluRay soon.

I was a 16 year-old girl when I first heard the Animals sing this. I was in the way back of my dad's Ford station wagon and when Eric Burden hit the first high note a chill went directly up my spine. I have always loved to sing it, but I also learned how to play it on the guitar. The chords are simple, but it's a song you can really get into!
Especially the Royal Albert Hall version with full orchestra...best song to emerge out of the 60's and originally shown on French TV with a niave looking, very handsome Justin Hayward...as a new frontman to The already established band The Moody Blues, when I first heard it on Radio Luxemburg. I just said, who's that? Its beautiful.
Even being brazen enough to sing about a house of prostitution, which this song is, was considered socially unacceptable back then. Nonetheless, “House of the Rising Sun” became a hit because the power in this rendition could not be denied. It was definitely considered counter-culture back then. The Animals had to dress conservatively. They wouldn’t have made it past the TV censors otherwise. And TV was only medium on which groups could get their music videos (to use a term that came along 25 years later) broadcast.

Jimi was already a great guitarist. I was a kid, but I got to hear him play in a band here in North Nashville, TN, a number of times. He was on the scene here before he went anyplace. He was fantastic!!!

My late husband was Vietnam War Veteran, The Animals and Credence Clearwater Revival were his go to music when he wasn't in the state of mind he wanted( in other words they kept him from going to the dark place in his mind.) This song is a very old "folk" song originating in the early 1800's - not about a boy in New Orleans, but a girl in New Orleans working as a prostitute in the brothel called "The House of the Rising Sun". There actually was a brothel called The House of the Rising Sun in the late 1700's, burned down, another one reopened in the early 1800's, burned down, another in the mid 1800's, burned down. One of them was also an opium den along with a brothel.

He was 17 when he recorded this. Since Iceni's comments I have been researching the backstory. There is no evidence that this house ever existed in New Orleans. If it had it would have been after 1831 when the first railways came. The brothel inspired B&B named House of the Rising Sun in NO is named after the song as the owners were fans of the song. There are three theories about the song's setting: a brothel, a gambling house, and a prison. The lyrics support all three, with the prison being the least convincing. A theory is that "The Rising Sun" was used as the name of a bawdy house in two traditional English songs, and it was also a name for English pubs, therefore it is about a brothel. Alternatively, there is the Sun King theory, which also supports brothels. They could both be red Herrings. As a feeling, I think it is about a brothel, though it could just as easily be about a gambling house. The original song, it is supposed, would have been written in the last two decades of the 19th century. Blue jeans were invented in 1875ish (the immortal Levi's). There is no evidence to support any theories that the song is earlier. Some musicologists have said that it resembled ballads of the 16th century, and could very easily have derived from one of that time. Seems far fetched to me. Recorded May 18, 1964 in ONE TAKE! The engineer set the levels, they performed it once. Then mixed down and mastered. The entire session was twenty-five minutes. Burdon's soaring vocal and Price's funky organ solo shine in what became The Animals trans- Atlantic hit. Brilliant!
They were well known for their one time takes in the studio as Eric put it..."I always do my best the first time round...thats when I capture the mood,"...what a talent...the Animals used to play at clubs in the seaside town of Whitby in Yorkshire, just down the road from their native Newcastle, before they were discovered and crowds flocked to see them..I visited there 3yrs ago and the ad posters of the band are still up on the walls for some of those venues...they are proud of their incredible rock legend there.

Eric Burdon gives me goosebumps every time I hear him sing. The Animals has been a favorite of mine since middle school. I love how English musicians proudly say they were inspired to cover old blues by black musicians back in those days.
This song was a cover. It originally dates back to at least the 18th century, caught the Animals' ears via an English singer named Johnny Handle. By then, "House of the Rising Sun" had already been covered by Lead Belly, Woody Guthrie, Roy Acuff and, just a couple of years earlier, by Nina Simone and Dylan. You might enjoy listening to some of the other versions if they're available.

@GrayWolf2036 Yeah, that's why I said "the way we know it" :) There was something you could call alternative fashion but it was different from what we call alternative fashion today. First of all, in the late sixties and early seventies, mainstream fashion split into several co-existing styles and from that time the idea of expressing your individual personality through your sartorial choice became much more prominent. We not only have the possibility to chose between several significantly different styles, we are expected to choose a style that matches our personality and image. In other words, today a bad boy NEEDS to dress a certain way. But in the early sixties that split didn't really happen yet, for at least two decades there was just one mainstream fashion that everybody wore. So nobody felt like they're compromising their individuality by wearing a suit and a tie, it didn't mean you conform or compromise, it just didn't have that significance.
I really was thinking of the parental attitudes toward the rock and roll singers and especially the Beatles and the hair when I was in high school. And comparing that to what we got in the hair and dress and music when our kids hit high school. Compare the Animals to Twisted Sister.
Normally 55 year old songs or videos sound their age.....The beat was slower maybe, the sound not as crisp. However, this song is amazing, it transports the mood as if it was from today. This is actually an old folk song dating back to around 1905, first printed in 1925, recorded by Appalachian folks Ingersoll in the 20's & '30s. It pretty much became indelible when Woody Guthrie recorded in 1941 & Huddy "Leadbelly" Ledbetter in 1944. But the Animals is the most famous version.
It's even older than that, really. Some say it actually came from an old poem about 400 years ago before it became a song. When a woman sings it, the lyrics become a about a prostitute.

Old Southern folk song. I only know this version, but my grandmother used to play this on her mandolin back during the Depression in the 1930s (according to my mom). Its about a brothel in New Orleans.

Wow. Can you imagine hearing this for the first time like I did when I was 14 in 1964? I'm not saying I was hip or anything like that but this blew me away. I had never heard anything remotely like it in my life. The Animals and the Stones and the Beatles were just picking me up and swinging me around in the air! You hardly had time to breath back then there was so much new music coming out. From 64 to 69 was one hell of a ride. Maybe a time like that is coming again? Is it now? I don't know. But I find it heartwarming to see some of the young people giving a listen to our music back then. I've listened to one hell of a lot of blues from the 1900s on up and one of the best is (1970) Led Zeppelin's "Since I've Been Loving You."

@@grahamyates2490 Everybody wanted to be a rock and roller after these groups started putting out music. Eric Burdon had such a powerful voice and he was only limited by the microphone level. He could have sung without a microphone and still be heard in the back on an auditorium. I remember pirate radio stations in England. We in the States thought it was just terrific that these ships were broadcasting from off the coast. Great time to be alive.

It's even more amazing when put into perspective. They had to do this in one take, they didn't have the money for a second try, and this was all before the fancy machines which help change your voice and alters it to stay smooth.. This is pure raw in one run..

Actually this was live but on the Ed Sullivan show which had super strict guidelines about movement of the body. I don’t know if this was before or after the Elvis debacle but if it was after then that would explain the stiffness. They were far more animated in concert settings.

This is from a British movie called Pop Gear (in the U.S it was called Go-Go Mania). It's a collection of filmed performances of various British bands of the period performing their big hits. Most of them never crossed over, but of course The Animals did. They're all shot, staged, and lit really interestingly. It's actually a beautiful movie to watch. Coming out on BluRay soon.

I was a 16 year-old girl when I first heard the Animals sing this. I was in the way back of my dad's Ford station wagon and when Eric Burden hit the first high note a chill went directly up my spine. I have always loved to sing it, but I also learned how to play it on the guitar. The chords are simple, but it's a song you can really get into!

Even being brazen enough to sing about a house of prostitution, which this song is, was considered socially unacceptable back then. Nonetheless, “House of the Rising Sun” became a hit because the power in this rendition could not be denied. It was definitely considered counter-culture back then. The Animals had to dress conservatively. They wouldn’t have made it past the TV censors otherwise. And TV was only medium on which groups could get their music videos (to use a term that came along 25 years later) broadcast.

Jimi was already a great guitarist. I was a kid, but I got to hear him play in a band here in North Nashville, TN, a number of times. He was on the scene here before he went anyplace. He was fantastic!!!

My late husband was Vietnam War Veteran, The Animals and Credence Clearwater Revival were his go to music when he wasn't in the state of mind he wanted( in other words they kept him from going to the dark place in his mind.) This song is a very old "folk" song originating in the early 1800's - not about a boy in New Orleans, but a girl in New Orleans working as a prostitute in the brothel called "The House of the Rising Sun". There actually was a brothel called The House of the Rising Sun in the late 1700's, burned down, another one reopened in the early 1800's, burned down, another in the mid 1800's, burned down. One of them was also an opium den along with a brothel.

Since Iceni's comments I have been researching the backstory. There is no evidence that this house ever existed in New Orleans. If it had it would have been after 1831 when the first railways came. The brothel inspired B&B named House of the Rising Sun in NO is named after the song as the owners were fans of the song. There are three theories about the song's setting: a brothel, a gambling house, and a prison. The lyrics support all three, with the prison being the least convincing. A theory is that "The Rising Sun" was used as the name of a bawdy house in two traditional English songs, and it was also a name for English pubs, therefore it is about a brothel. Alternatively, there is the Sun King theory, which also supports brothels. They could both be red Herrings. As a feeling, I think it is about a brothel, though it could just as easily be about a gambling house.
The original song, it is supposed, would have been written in the last two decades of the 19th century. Blue jeans were invented in 1875ish (the immortal Levi's). There is no evidence to support any theories that the song is earlier. Some musicologists have said that it resembled ballads of the 16th century, and could very easily have derived from one of that time. Seems far fetched to me. As a popular folk song, the oldest record of “House of the Rising Sun” in reference to a song was 1905, and it was first recorded in 1933 by an Appalachian group.
So the origins, the protagonist, and even the setting, of this song are unknown. Even the lyrics change. There is no "sense".

Back in the day, there was a lot of literature in writing songs - the music is a bit like a funeral march to add to the feeling of the death of souls that went into that ‘house’ .. and the house was symbolising the wrong path we can all fall on to.

Wikipedia says it origins may go back to the 1600s. Rising Sun may not only refer to the brothel but also Louis XIV the French Sun King.

Recorded May 18, 1964 in ONE TAKE! The engineer set the levels, they performed it once. Then mixed down and mastered. The entire session was twenty-five minutes. Burdon's soaring vocal and Price's funky organ solo shine in what became The Animals trans- Atlantic hit. Brilliant!
They were well known for their one time takes in the studio as Eric put it..."I always do my best the first time round...thats when I capture the mood,"...what a talent...the Animals used to play at clubs in the seaside town of Whitby in Yorkshire, just down the road from their native Newcastle, before they were discovered and crowds flocked to see them..I visited there 3yrs ago and the ad posters of the band are still up on the walls for some of those venues...they are proud of their incredible rock legend there.

Eric Burdon gives me goosebumps every time I hear him sing. The Animals has been a favorite of mine since middle school. I love how English musicians proudly say they were inspired to cover old blues by black musicians back in those days.
This song was a cover. It originally dates back to at least the 18th century, caught the Animals' ears via an English singer named Johnny Handle. By then, "House of the Rising Sun" had already been covered by Lead Belly, Woody Guthrie, Roy Acuff and, just a couple of years earlier, by Nina Simone and Dylan. You might enjoy listening to some of the other versions if they're available.
In the 80's Tracy Chapman recorded one of my favorite versions.

Look 'im up, his name is Eric Burdon. He has had a legendary singing voice ever since the '60s. He is still pretty good, but I think this was his absolute best.

I absolutely love seeing young guys like you reacting to different genres and different decades of music, it shows a real appreciation for it, music from certain decades is timeless and has been used in numerous movies over the years and the 60's is definitely one of those decades, in my opinion some of the best music made was in the 60's & 70's, glad to see you guys enjoying it and it's great that your so open minded.

@GrayWolf2036 Yeah, that's why I said "the way we know it" :) There was something you could call alternative fashion but it was different from what we call alternative fashion today. First of all, in the late sixties and early seventies, mainstream fashion split into several co-existing styles and from that time the idea of expressing your individual personality through your sartorial choice became much more prominent. We not only have the possibility to chose between several significantly different styles, we are expected to choose a style that matches our personality and image. In other words, today a bad boy NEEDS to dress a certain way. But in the early sixties that split didn't really happen yet, for at least two decades there was just one mainstream fashion that everybody wore. So nobody felt like they're compromising their individuality by wearing a suit and a tie, it didn't mean you conform or compromise, it just didn't have that significance.
I really was thinking of the parental attitudes toward the rock and roll singers and especially the Beatles and the hair when I was in high school. And comparing that to what we got in the hair and dress and music when our kids hit high school. Compare the Animals to Twisted Sister.

Normally 55 year old songs or videos sound their age.....The beat was slower maybe, the sound not as crisp. However, this song is amazing, it transports the mood as if it was from today. The voice, the beat, the electric organ, and equally important the sincere facial expression of the singer, no smile, stunning ! Great reaction !
This is actually an old folk song dating back to around 1905, first printed in 1925, recorded by Appalachian folks Ingersoll in the 20's & '30s. It pretty much became indelible when Woody Guthrie recorded in 1941 & Huddy "Leadbelly" Ledbetter in 1944. But the Animals is the most famous version.
It's even older than that, really. Some say it actually came from an old poem about 400 years ago before it became a song. When a woman sings it, the lyrics become a about a prostitute.

Old Southern folk song. I only know this version, but my grandmother used to play this on her mandolin back during the Depression in the 1930s (according to my mom). Its about a brothel in New Orleans.
