    The biggest difference is the two completely different roles they were designed for.
    F22 Raptor is the king of air-denial and CAP. It is designed for maneuverability, speed, and interception capability, and it succeeds brilliantly at that role. There is no other aircraft that can compete with an F22 in a duel, not even the Su35 people fanboy over. And it's not even close. It is the natural replacement of the F15, which was the king of air to air of its day, despite the Mig27A's attempt at beating it. There is no aircraft currently deployed that can take an F22. There's no aircraft known in development capable of taking on an F22. In the role of A2/AD (Anti Access / Area Denial), it has no peer. However, it is specifically built and designed with this one role in mind, and it isn't as capable of filling other roles, such as ground strikes, CAS, or surveillance. It is not capable of deploying a nuclear payload, and most of its payload is designed with its anti-air role in mind. As the saying goes... the first time you realize there's a Raptor in your airspace is when you've got a missile trace on final acquisition. It also requires a landing strip, and is not designed to be launched from or land on a carrier.
    The F35, however, is the replacement to the F16 multi-role strike fighter, and its capabilities reflect this flexible doctrinal role. There's three variants of the basic chassis, which further complicates the matter, as they have very different capabilities. However, the one to really take a look at is the F35-C, which is the first STOVL/VTOL aircraft with supercruise (Harrier could go supersonic, but had to hit the afterburners to do it), specifically designed to be able to be deployed by Carrier and even taking into consideration and taking maximum advantage from the new magrail launchers the Gerald Ford class Supercarriers possess. As with the F16, it is capable of significant payloads, including nuclear capable payloads, while still retaining stealth, supercruise, and range. It can use JDAM targeting packages to provide CAS on targets with what are normally considered 'dumb' munitions, such as bombs, and is capable of being a drone-tender as well, able to relay instructions to nearby UAV's to perform additional tasks in tandem or in support of the aircraft. This includes things like accepting firing solutions from a drone so the F35 doesn't have to light off its sensor package to acquire targets, having UAV's fire a missile or other weapon package from an oblique angle simultaneous to their own launch to increase the difficulty of interception, and probably a bunch of other possibilities that either haven't yet been considered or are still classified so we haven't heard of them yet.
    The F22 is a bird dog, pure and simple. Anything entering airspace covered by a Raptor will wish they hadn't in the very brief time they have left to regret anything. The F35 is a multi-role JDF aircraft capable of ground strikes, air engagements, CAS, CAP, and probably even surveillance since it can relay information back from drones sent remotely, and can do so from a Carrier. These are two totally different aircraft for different jobs. On the whole, the F35 is a much more flexible package, and can fill the same role the F22 does, although not as well (still better than any other aircraft that exists). Both are good aircraft, but you're comparing apples and oranges. It's like comparing the F15 to the F16.

      I enjoyed your assessment. One item the f-35 is stealthier than the 22. It's a newer design by the king of stealth Lockheed. The internet got it backwards but that myth like all should go away after awhile.

      Great assessment and I really enjoyed reading it and agreed with most everything you said. I can’t stand seeing all the hate people throw out there at the F35 because it’s an amazing airplane. I mean even our military has played a hand in this negative image by giving her the nickname of Fat Amy,🤣. Although that is done out of love based on her looks, not her capabilities because our guys know what she’s capable of! I feel the F35 is very misunderstood by most people as they think it’s supposed to be a BFM dogfighting beast like the raptor. When in reality it is a JOINT STRIKE FIGHTER, taking on multiple rolls, with dogfighting only being a small part of that. And while it’s no F22, from what I’ve read it still holds it’s own very very well in BFM. Now back to my point, the only two things I saw that I wanted to address were first of all, the VTOL variant of the F35 is the marine corps F35B. The F35C is the navy’s normal carrier catapult launched version and the F35A is the Air Force version. Also from everything I’ve ever read, the F35 is not technically a super cruise capable aircraft. It can “super cruise” in short dashes of about 150 miles at Mach 1.2 before gradually slowing back below Mach 1 unless she lights the blower in which case she WILL speed back up above the Mach but she isn’t super cruising then. Where as the F22 is capable of continuous super cruise at Mach 1.6 until either the pilot doesn’t want it anymore or he runs out of gas! I really enjoyed reading your response though and I wasn’t intending to try to poke holes in it. You had really great info in there about both airplanes Good day

  • @koshersalaami

    What was not included in the comparison is the ability to fire in multiple directions. The F35 can basically fire spherically. The F22 couldn’t do anything like that and is now being updated with some of the F35’s capabilities but not all because it would entail too much of a redesign. The fact that the F22 will be able to fire behind itself is quite an enhancement, though the F35 has always had that ability.
    What wasn’t included in enough detail is the F35’s data sharing capabilities, which are being enhanced in the F22 but not to the F35’s level. Aside from sharing data with other assets to the point where the pilot can see the whole battlefield, the F35 can function as a sort of baby AWACS. The F35 can also be used to give ships early warning about incoming missiles because its downward facing sensors operate from so much higher than those on a ship, allowing it to see further around the Earth’s curvature (farther horizon) and from farther afield. Because of data sharing, the F35 doesn’t even need to fire at the target it locates - another asset can do that.
    F35 power can easily be projected. To use an F22 you need a proximate base. The F35C can be projected by carrier. The F35B can operate from an amphibious ship designed primarily for helicopters and is way more flexible in terms of how small a remote field it can use. This is an enormous advantage over potential enemies, none of which even have stealth carrier-based aircraft under development. Given lead times from concept to deployment, that gives the US one Hell of a window.
    No other country has a stealth aircraft that is remotely as stealthy as either the F22 or F35. Any potential enemy is operating at a massive disadvantage against either aircraft. Another issue is numbers. There is a lot of doubt as to whether the Chinese have an actual functioning stealth fighter at all given recent reports from India’s Air Force about being able to spot “stealth” Chinese fighters very easily on radar. If we look at Russia’s stealth fighters, the SU35 is not as stealthy as either American aircraft. But even if the SU35 and the coming SU57 were as stealthy, if we look as far out as 2028 the combined Russian inventory of SU35’s and SU57’s will not reach American numbers of F22’s alone. In terms of aircraft, if we’re looking at 1:1 competition of stealth aircraft, which given our stealth advantage is unrealistic as our kill ratios would be way better than that, that essentially leaves the F35 program entirely unanswered.
    We’re in better shape than most analysts give us credit for.

      The F22 can be updated to have more of the F35's features. Like shooting behind itself. And seeing the entire battlefield. Also the amazing helmet technology. But no matter what they do you can't make the F35 fly or out perform the F22 in terms of manuverability, top speed etc. Because the F35 single engine just can't match the F22. Not to mention the weight etc. It's like comparing a Rolls Royce to a Pagani Zonda. Both amazing cars. But DAMN that Pagani is a Beast!!!!

      No, it was what reduced the cost and made the aircraft this good. A product completely built by one company will be extremely expensive because they are now kind of a monopoly in the product thus charging high but when it's shared, companies gotta give reasonable price in order to win the contract. The aircraft is this good cause it was built by different companies with different expertise in their department. Sure, one company can build a fighter and still make it good but it will take a lot of luck or maybe too much upgrades.

      The F35 is what happens when you try to stuff a bunch of novel features into a plane that is supposed to do everything for everyone and for cheap (relative to the f22). You end up pleasing nobody and doing nothing exceptionally well. They also ended up making 3 different planes anyways, so this joint strike fighter was a conceptual failure from the beginning. If they were actually interested in building a cheap strike fighter, they should've followed a 5th generation version of the F16 model of development i.e. for shared parts and cheaper maintenance instead of a gluten of varied novel technology that may not even be practical for deployment at this point. If they wanted an advanced stealth fighter for each service branch, they should've developed three entirely different planes for 3 entirely different roles.

    • @windyvista3657
      @windyvista3657 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As an engineer, you have to make concrete decisions about which processes you wish to maximize over others. The success of the F15, F16, F18, and A10 were all due to the fact that the planes were well engineered for their respective roles. Taking the A10 as an example, it's redundancy and durable build make it an ideal ground strike aircraft. Another feature is that it's engines are easily fixable with parts that are readily available due to their use in commercial turbofan engines. The engineers sacrificed speed, maneuverability, and technological advances; for a plane that was legendary for it's durability and cheap cost.

      @@RedRider1600 That's a big negative. There is no way of knowing how long, and when stealth will be necessary. It will largely depend on who you are fighting. If you were to fight Russia, or China, it would likely be needed for much longer.

      I doubt it would be longer than a week.
      Day 1: Destroy radar sites, communications and command and control, and any aircraft that oppose.
      Day 2: Finish off survivors from day 1.
      Day 3: Finish off survivors from day 2.
      Day 4: Bomb tactical and strategic targets.

    • @michaelstidham5957
      @michaelstidham5957 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RedRider1600 It would likely take months to even years. If we ever fought a conventional war with someone like Russia, stealth would be paramount to the F-35's survival since almost all Russian fighters are much more maneuverable than the F-35, and are equipped with very long range missiles. Beast Mode may also allow Russian SAMS to detect, and track the F-35, which would make it a sitting duck. It would definitely take months, if not years to take most of them out. You would never be able to take them all out, since some are underground. Stealth would once again be the key factor to it's survival. If Beast Mode did result in a large enough radar signature to allow it to be detected & tracked (it most likely would) then you wise wells to send an F-15 instead because it can carry twice the payload, and would have a better chance at escaping the SAM (unless F-35 ditches all external payload to regain stealth) considering it is about twice as fast, and can climb about twice as high (F-15 has a recorded test flight of (102,000 feet in 1979, newer F-15s can likely beat that due to an even higher thrust to weight ratio).
