Jaguar XKR-S: When Jag had a Midlife Crisis - They Did It Right

  • In today's video, we look at one of the ultimate XKs - the fire breathing, bewinged 542bhp XKR-S. Famous at the time for being the most powerful car Jag built since the XJ220, the XKR-S commanded a serious premium - but quickly depreciated.
    Now they seem to be holding their money, are they worth holding onto?

    Thanks again James, appreciate the reference to Holdens by the way, it's sad we no longer produce Holdens in Australia but I still like to see the older ones being preserved and restored. I was out for a drive in my XKR again today and saw a '74 HQ Holden station wagon in traffic, looking good in vibrant and punchy Barbados Green - the driver and I had a chat at the lights and his young bloke said, '..Dad, he's in a jaguar, we're in a lion...' Nice little moment, my first car was a white '72 HQ Holden wagon with a 202' six and 'three on the tree' column shift manual, cost me $200 at the auctions. Yep, fond memories there!

    I'm glad you mentioned the outdated tyres James. I've never owned a Jaaag, nor has anyone I'm related to, but... no matter what brand the fast car, fitting decent modern rubber wear has to be an essential component in any real road test, if only because the car has one less significant excuse for behaving badly.

      Tyres really have a use-by date of 6-8 years depending on the conditions they are in - then the rubber will start to break down and all sorts of stuff can start to go wrong This is why they stamp the manufacturing week and year on the side of the tyre. 10 years on a car with this much power - that'd be terrifying IMO.

    Little bit of inside industry information I’ve got regarding the XKR-S. The front uprights (or knuckles depending on you geography location) are quite special. There were designed 1 junction further south down the M40 from Gaydon just off the motorway by a company most famous for blue Japanese rally cars. They are CNC machined from large round billets about 250mm in diameter as the round billets maintain a more thorough heat treat the square stock apparently. There’s at least 75 pairs were manufactured this way at not an insignificant cost. I’m not sure how many XKR-S were made in total or if they switched eventually to a forged version, but some for sure have some very bling uprights that’s for sure!

  • @jan-zg7pf

    I think you’ve now reviewed more XKR variants (X100’s and X150’s) than any other TH-camr James. Another great review of these massively underrated GT cars. Personally, I prefer the clean lines on the standard XKR and if you want to save yourself a bucket of change vs a S or a GT, as I did with my standard 2010 Speed Pack variant, I got the engine and gearbox remapped to unleash this wonderful V8. DMS Automotive in Southampton did mine (I’ve no vested interest). There is a photo on Google Maps of my Kyanite Blue one on their rolling road. For less than the price of a set of new tyres, I’ve got more grunt than an XKR-S GT, increased clamping pressures in the gearbox to take the increased torque and super smooth gear changes. Yes it doesn’t have the suspension upgrades I grant an S S-GT, but don’t skimp on tyres on these cars, drive it progressively but with respect and they are fine. Just enjoy the overall experience. It’s what these cars are all about. They are just fantastic VFM, have buckets of soul and make you feel alive. They’ll always make you smile when you open the garage door too. Very pretty cars with a nod to the E-type with that front end. So, when are you buying one James; you know it makes sense?!

    I do like these. Back in 2014 we wanted a replacement car and there was a red XKR-S same as this one at the dealer we really liked. There was no way we could fit our toddler-aged children with child seats in the back though which ended that idea. Resigning to sensibility and needing a proper family car, my wife test drove a diesel XF without me and reported back "nice car, shame about the engine" and liked the familiarity with the 3.0 V6 S-Type we had. At that moment, standing outside on the forecourt with a salesman who was smiling but clearly thinking we'd wasted his time, I remembered the XFR-S existed which seemed like the ideal compromise - the XKR-S engine and front uprights, F-Type steering rack and gearbox, French Racing Blue, big spoiler, offensive to walnut polishers on the Jaguarforum and with 4 doors and proper back seats for the kids. They didn't have one in Perth, so the dealer arranged to have Edinburgh's French Racing Blue demonstrator sent over a weekend or so later. He gave it to us all day. We loved it. We placed our order when I got back. Shortly after, we had a call saying Jaguar had changed the specs for the 2015MY and French Racing Blue was no longer available. He gave us a cracking deal on the demonstrator with 1200 miles on the clock. I was concerned for a moment that I'd given that car a good thrashing, but then realised that was what I was going to do to the new one anyway, so was quite happy getting the ex-demo for £65k. I would like an XKR-S, but am no longer making money like I was then - sigh.

    Being a jag technician, the XK R is the only car that gives me a twitchy bum hole. It will catch you out when you least expect it. The ftype on the other hand is a bit more forgiving especially the later ones with AWD

    • @iainbagnall4825
      @iainbagnall4825 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This gen, or the X100? Any particular reason? My assumption would be the auto trans, i.e. shifting/torque converter disengaging when you don't know its going to happen, and that radically changing the power/torque to the back wheels, and the ensuing loss of traction. Also, what kind of diffs do these cars have? Mostly used as a sitting room on wheels/ fast highway cruiser/GT car so I wonder how they were really set up.

    • @iainbagnall4825
      @iainbagnall4825 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A quick google suggests that the XK8 and XKR did not have limited slip diffs so I am assuming they are open diffs so can definitely see why they would be sketchy when losing grip; I assume they simply tried to prevent this with some rather blunt traction control.
      Got an LSD in my mx-5, and driven open diff'd mx-5s too, difference is definitely noticed at the extremes of grip which I assume can be reached more easily with 400bhp delivered through an unpredictable auto box, the extra weight would have an impact too I imagine.
      Would love your view/info on this as a jag tech!

      @@iainbagnall4825 The 5 litre supercharged cars have an electronic LSD, it was even mentioned in the video. Put decent, modern tyres on these cars and they handle very predictably.

      @@u102768 I'll have to check again if I missed something, but I'm referring to the X100 XKR which was supplied with in final form a 4.2 v8 and an open diff. My curiosity was with whether the jag guy was talking about the x100 xkr or the x150 xkr which are different cars, and neither of them are an XKR-S.
      And my reason for being interested in the X100 is that is the one that is an affordable AF bargain right now which can actually be found for sale and I am shopping for a good one :D.

    • @Sumo098
      @Sumo098 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@iainbagnall4825 I'm no Jag tech but I own a 4.0 X100 XKR (and an MX5 coincidentally enough). You've more or less figured out the gist of it yourself, the open diff makes it super easy to spin up the inside wheel in a corner and the way this is "managed" is with an extremely sensitive traction control system that loves to cut in too early. It's so sensitive that the shunt of the torque converter you mentioned before can set it off when flooring it from a low cruising speed. Turn this off and you can wring a bit more out of it but at the expense of said super easy wheelspin especially in the damp.
      That said I've never actually had the arse end kick out on me unpredictably, it seems to sort of bog down and wobble a little and not much more than that. That could be because of decent tyres (regular PS4, can't get the 4S in 18") or simply because I lift my foot as soon as I feel it happening. An LSD is definitely on the future shopping list because it desperately needs one.

    The XKRS is just a little wrong to me. I feel like the XK lines and body is extremely elegant and doesnt suit the wings, lips and gaps present on these. It's a bit of a clash of design philosophy. If it had wider haunches I think that would bring it all together. The XKR75 is the perfect balance to me. The slightly more aggressive front blends better with the style of the car, sideskirts and rear lip are perfect IMO. The powertrain though, is immense.

I had to wait until my mid 40's before I truly appreciate the beauty of Jaguar cars. It's a paradox. I'm certain had Jaguar basked in success like it's German counterparts, they would be producing ugly cars, very much like it's German counterparts, or worse, filling every market requirement with a bespoke model. Part of the allure is it's rarity !

    Great video, front end looks were a little messy in the XKR-S for me (too many ports and bits bolted on), but they were trying to shake the old man image as you mentioned and I think the design team have evolved the later Jags into things of beauty. That old man image is well and truly shaken off if Le Mans is anything to go by...
    Just come back from a road trip down to Le Mans 24hr, and those lads in Europe love their cars...and Jags. Its a shame Jag don't have a footprint at the race bar an F-Pace stand considering it's rich history with the race.

    XKR-S dangerous at limit; GREAT REVIEW though. XKR-S was repeatedly noted as seemingly trying to kill its driver by magazines who tested it thoroughly. Now at these decent prices, a good value. However, Sport Seats w Dynamic pack = not comfy enough beyond 2 hours. Within 2-3 years after XKR-S, the market exploded with cars featuring this level of power and many of those also could only put it down in straight line. This was the end of getting a car because it was fast as many were fast. Well behaved or enjoyable in an all around fashion became the substantial differentiator. Aston’s and Maseratis more beautiful but supercharged Jags won respective competitions with those and can be more readily serviced. Nice review Jay!

    I recently just sold my 2014 French racing blue jaguar XKRS-You’ll probably see it for sale At a jaguar dealership in Ventura California. The car was absolutely gorgeous absolutely amazing the only complaint was the automatic transmission was very outdated and slow based upon the super powerful engine

    My wife did the same in 2014 traded her Porche Panamera 4.8 in for a new XK Dynamic R. in the same colour. Breath taking performance and drop dead looks. In every way a better Aston Martin

    If Jaguar wanted to make money they should have produced the C-X75. Such a beautiful sports car that imo a large number of people would have ordered. Plus it was mid engined and there hasn't been a mid engined Jag since the XJ220

    Jags (and “astins”) only take a very subtle body kit, and they tend to age them more so, otherwise they often look better with age.

    Great review James. I think your point on tyres was valid. I drive this car on PZero's - which tyre would you say is the very best to to fit to my xkrs?

    I’ve owned two of these cars and they were both brilliant, had an Italian racing red one like this one and one in French racing blue. Absolute widow makers, ran Michelin Cup2’s on both and uprated brake pads from Carbotech.
    Both cars nearly killed me, well i say that I nearly killed myself in them 🤦🏻‍♂️

    Wonderful video James - just one thing, don’t think you can get Jagdroid for the X150 series, the system is compatible with X350 and some others but as far as I am aware, not this one? Unless someone tells me otherwise! Love the channel.

    I think the visuals suit the design brief, it's supposed to be the larriest version of the XKR so the aggressive vents and race car styling are in keeping. Personally I prefer the more subtle versions but if you're going to buy the loud, shouty version then the styling is probably what you want

    Roger, I am the owner of The XKR 75 that James referenced in this review of The XKR S. I will try to put any bias aside in adding my comments. The S is a truly great great car and in The Italian racing Red the only Jag I would contemplate owning if I was to change from my 75. BUT I am not so keen on the rear spoiler and added horizontal front of bonnet vents which I feel spoil the flow lines of the front and rear of the car. According to Nigel Thorley’s 2018 publication Jaguar XK/XKR. On colour The S was only ever available in White, British Racing Green, Black, Grey, Italian Racing Red, French Blue. Of these I would like to see it in The Racing Green but never have. Oh and for me not with Black wheels.

    I cannot stress enough that the XK series of cars are massively dependent on great tyres. These run like the difference between night & day with fresh tyres. You’d think the geometry is out but no…just tyres. I’ve had a few now and sold my last XK60 last year. Just looking now and at a French racing blue GTRS.

    The only Jag i have ever owned was the infamous but not great X-Type 4WD Estate, it rattled it's way down the road
    to the next petrol station, i can only describe it as a disaster.
    It was replaced very quickly by a BMW 3 series touring, ohh what a difference, no more rattles and sensible fuel economy
    and far superior bulid quality.
    To me Jaguar have made some very desirable cars, but quality and reliability has been sadly lacking in far too many.
    In todays world of ever increasing petrol prices, they are not a daily driver, still desirable if you can afford to run one
    as a weekend car.

    I disagree that Jaguar had the bad boy image from the X150's. The earlier XJ's always had a bad boy image esspecially when all blacked out. Same with the X100 XKR's which always looked very cool.
