I just dropped you channel’s name in a live chat I was in with 800+ people in it. The questions started flooding me and I tried my best to describe how awesome your channel is. I told them to clear a large space of time to binge watch! You lift my spirits with every video. I wish you posted a Vlog every day. Just watching how you and Melissa conduct your lives is an amazing opportunity to learn from.

Yep, I've recommended this channel to a lot of people - for differing reasons, too. Several people my age are having to clear their parents' hoards, others have an interest in antiques, and some are into restoring cars. I found this channel very helpful. It was very good to have gotten an idea of what to keep and what to toss or give away when having to clear my parents' hoard. Thank you Alex!

@@CuriosityIncorporated FYI--don't store your things in the house until it can be locked, and even then be careful what you store in an uninhabited house. Thieves look for that kind of opportunity to steal, especially since you don't know who is watching your channel

We had more fun with our VW pop-up camper. As teens we lived out in the country, and we would have sleep overs in the yard, and we use to take up in the mountains camping and fishing. I wouldn't mind having another one.

Fellow frozen Canadian here! I jumped for joy at seeing the VW van. I have a real soft spot in my heart for them, especially the white and turquoise ones. I write cozy mysteries, and my character drives one. So sad I had to research VW vans for the books and cover art…. A sacrifice…. Not! Lol. I love tuning in to your channel-always uplifting. Never a dull moment. YOU should be writing a book!

I wondered how anyone could build a house in Canada in winter. With the minus 32 degrees
in many more days this month, it's amazing the amount of work they were able to accomplish
You have a great project manager overseeing the work as it gets done. Alex you are lucky to have picked the right guy!

We got a 1978 VW Westfalia camper in about 1985. We had a lot of fun with it, and later, when we moved from Texas to Mississippi, it actually gave us a place to stay until we could get a house rented. But we did have trouble with the fuel line leaking and spewing gas on the hot engine on one trip, so please check and renew all rubber and plastic fuel and brake hoselines etc. The engine is relatively easy to pull out and service on a workbench. It is a fully functional, mini camper that sleeps up to 4 people, with sink, cooktop and refrigerated cooler - great for long trips. Enjoy!!

They don’t care, for sure. He’s paying for a finished space so they automatically cover it. If he says he wants it UNcovered, I’m sure they’ll just remove the drywall where they boxed it in.

    • @jonilore

I agree with the other comments. The wooden beam added real style. I have beams in my home which have been painted white to match the ceiling. They are still noticeable but are not a feature which yours could be, Alexander. I would have them removed before they mud and tape. And also enclose the metal pole so it looks neater. Congrats on the van, too. It looks like it is good condition for its age. All happening for the Archbolds and we are only 2 weeks into 2022!! Take care and stay safe. With love from Down Under 😘💕🇦🇺

Vapour barriers can cause humidity like a greenhouse. Mind you we live on the wet coast. We learned the hard way with a reno that we needed a ventilation system when you have a vapour barrier. Your home is really looking great you guys will have so much beautiful light and space. Love the van, my grandmother always had one, they would break down and then she'd get another one. We took many trips and I have memories of being tiny sitting on my moms lap in the front. Once she had one that was an empty shell inside. She'd throw all of us 5 girl cousins in the back with a foam matress and we'd slide back and forth everytime she turned a corner, so much fun. The sound of the engine brings back great memories.

Hey Alex, you should ask them to run a blower door test before all the drywall is up. This is a real test of how well your builder is sealing things up!
Air leakage can be 25% of your total heat loss and it's way easier to get it right now vs after finishing. Ask your builder what air tightness they usually hit. Should be minimum 1.5 air changes per hour, or 1.5 ACH. Lower is better and means your walls and ceilings are better sealed, less chance for condensation buildup in walls, mold, attic rain. Especially in our climate, you don't want the house to "breathe", you should be providing controlled ventilation with an HRV or ERV.
Best way to find the leaks is by running a blower door test and then walking around with a thermal camera. Any leaks will show up clearly as cold air leaking in.
Give me a shout if your builder doesn't have any contacts to run a blower door test.

It is so cold where you are and it stays that way all winter. I had thought how great it would be to move to Vancouver Canada, but it's freezing there too. I'm just across the border in Washington state, but I'm half way in the middle in the Tacoma area and it gets cold here, but mostly it's mild. I am in awe of how you drive over all that snow and ice all the time and never worry about it. It's snows here an inch and I'm in the house for the duration! Your house is looking good. I'm sure your old house will look nice and tidy anyway. With or without christmas decoration. They're in the middle of YOUR build. It seems hard to hide your 'impatience' in this one 😏
    The insulation looks great.
They work very organised and meticulous. Be happy. You have every reason to be. Drupad and his team are behind on schedule due to the weather. No need to push them even more because you want to make your old house seem empty.

Good lord that garage looks enormous all drywalled!

The beam in the garage most likely was required to be covered with drywall by the fire code. Not sure about your area but where I live, this is a requirement. I opted for a steel I beam to span the wall to wall long length in my garage and the fire code here required drywall covering for that one.

Hey Alex, Never built a house from the ground up but took off the roof on our house & built a 2nd story & a dormer. More than doubled the size of the house. I drew the plans for the addition & worked with the builder. This series brings back memories. It's been about 35 years. Actually had to put on a new roof a few years ago. Just this past week we replaced a 24 year old water heater. It's the exact model you have in your new home. Love watching your adventures! Good Luck in all your endeavors. 🤗

So exciting! Great idea to bring extra things so that the house will show well & sell fast. Moving the first vehicle in makes it feel more real.

The house appears to be coming along! Brings bvb back some good memories, my Dad designed and by the early 70s we had built 2 new homes. Wow a VW bus...may you have as many good adventures in your Bus as I hold in the my heart that was bought new in 1964, converted to a camper and my Family of 5 traveled US coast to coast, Canada, think the Edmunton area was in one of those as the Odells/ Anderson's had ties, Europe from England to Sicily. After 2 rolls in the Odometer, 2 engines rust in piece was added to back bumper, then the doors rusted so much they would not stay closed so the middle was cut out leaving an 18'' wheelbase (scariest drive of my 60+ years). Six months before 911 it left its Indiana roots and moved to GA, it was planned on making a visit to where it started with less than 100 miles on it but plans changed with events of past 2 years! Postponed not cancelled. Can't wait to see the progress!!! Bless you and your!

It’s not too late to have them take the drywall off the beams!
My biggest regret w stuff like this is feeling like I can’t correct miscommunications in the moment, then spend years looking at the very things I should have had them fix/change. Is it fine how they did it, yes. Is it how YOU envisioned, no. So if you feel in the tiniest bit you’re going to always be imagining those beams being bare, then do it now. This is just from personal experience & totally my opinion of course.
    So excited for your family!!

My dad had a Volkswagen van in the 1970’s. He loved it and when he sold it he sold it for what he had paid for it. Looks like a great project.

Game on! Edmonton dad builds mini-NHL rink in backyard. Jeff Nash wanted to find a way to keep his kids occupied this winter.

Love, love, LOVE the van! Can’t wait to get a look inside. I’ve follow a number of van dwellers on TH-cam. I think this will be a fun project.

My sister, her husband and 3 kids drove from California to MIchigan and then back, in a van like that. Kids had fun, parents, not so much LOL Couple other channels I watch, they brought in campers on their property to have for guests to use. Call them their air bnb's so not a bad idea.
