Permanent Waves KILLED it with the production. Everything is so full and clear and bright and punchy. I think it was the peak of their songwriting, moving away from their early prog years, but still very, very inspired.
RUSH is just in another class.
The second instrumental break is phenomenal. Bass, keys, drums, and guitar using different time signatures to get to the same ending point. Way cool.

Some of my favorite songs from these two albums. I also think Entre Nous and The Weapon are underrated tracks. Even though their shorter songs are great, I’ve also really loved a lot of their deep cuts. Rush (aka my favorite band) 🇨🇦. Even though I’m American lol.

This was my very first Rush album. I bought it in 1980 when I was 15. I've been in the rabbit hole ever since.
With a Rush song you're always waiting for the something to happen, when all the while it is.
I love her honesty! At first she didn't get it. Then I seen the moment she did and I celebrated!!! You got a good woman there man! God bless you both!

@ Bob Wayman;Almost totally agree. IMPOSSIBLE to pick a favorite Rush song if you’re in the Rush army like me. Agree that JL is way up on the list though. SOOO MANY didn’t care for Caress of Steel, but it’s one of my favorites. I was turned on to Rush by a cousin with 2112 almost Immediately after it hit the market in the late ‘70’s. I was hooked like a fish! I consider myself very fortunate to have seen them 17 times. I’ve told the story too many times, So I basically stopped telling it, but I can point myself out in the audience (festival seating, so I was front row on the floor baby) on the cover of Exit Stage Left. I could listen to Rush forever but I get so sentimental AND hyped at the same time listening to Entre Nous…it’s personal for me. I still get goosebumps when Part III:Discovery starts on 2112. Aleksandar Živojinović aka Lerxst, is the only guitarist in the world that can take a simulated guitar tuning and turn it into a fucking masterpiece. Far too many to list, but I’ve always loved the original version of By-Tor & the Snow Dog, side one of Hemispheres, Natural Science (OBVIOUS), The Pass & the title track from RTB…
“You better run home boy, a fact’s a fact from Nome to Rome boy”…I LOVE the rap stuff in that song. Always loved Anagram (for Mongo), Where’s my thing & Leave That Thing Alone…but the best EVER…is Alex’s part of the acceptance speech when Rush were inducted into the R&R HOF!! Blah blah, blah blah….funniest shit ever!!
For me permanent waves and moving pictures are the 2 best albums from rush
Mike Cates I always go back one more, and throw Hemispheres in there for my Rush Trio of Perfection. They were on fire.

I was fortunate to meet Alex and Geddy on thier Clockwork Angel's Tour, I told Geddy " There would be no hard feelings if they would implement Jacob's Ladder into tonight's set" ( they hadn't played live since the Moving Pictures tour in 81, which I saw them live that year) Needless to say, I hope that I influenced them to do it on thier last tour, which was fantastic hearing live again after so many years.

Rush songs definitely need to be listened to several times before the method to their madness is understood. With this song you can close your eyes and see the storm coming, then the intensity of the storm followed by the calm after the storm. I love when a song can take you away visually.

Rick Haddad Rush’s unique interpretation of a huge storm and the calm afterwards. Another masterpiece by 3 MASTERS of their craft. In my humble (but slightly biased) opinion, the best band ever.

@@USAMehdi I just think it is the quintessential Rush song that adds all the flavours and elalnents into one masterpiece. Permanent Waves is my favourite Rush album and is often gets over looked to Moving Pictures. To me they could have been a volume 1 and volume 2.
I suffered from TMJ for many years. In the end it came down to managing my stress and it seemed to correct it self. I appreciate your attention to this problem. I could have used some massage techniques as i struggled with this. This song always take me me back to my youth, listening to this song with my brother while the rain and clouds seem to move in concert with the song (sunbeams and all). It was such a powerful memory as we both experienced it. Thanks for taking me back to that day. :-)

This was my first favourite song of theirs, as I'm a bit of a weather geek and, to me, this is the best musical depiction of a slowly-encroaching and utter relentlessness passing storm that there is. A drumming masterclass on how to build atmosphere, always evolving with very few bars (if any) repeating. Although I've been listening to this for over 30 years, I still can't quite get Neil's base drum pattern (coming out of the eye of the storm) right. Always throw this on when storms are in the vicinity. Never tire of it.
Watch them play this live on their last tour, R40 in 2015. 3 guys in their early 60"s absolutely smashing it
Rush is just so good, from the very beginning all the way until the end. I would love to watch you two react to the last song on Rush's last album, "The Garden". It is such a perfect end to a perfect career.
RUSH is amazing . To me this song is a master piece. It is so emotionally powerful!!
The most hypnotic Rush song.
Rush relates to a wider audience because even though they are progressive, their roots are classic rock based. It's also more digestible because it's well structured and not fatiguing to listen to like a lot of progressive music that seem to forget the underlying primal hook, theme and grove required for the sake of simply over playing with "look what we can do" tactics with disruptive (and not helpful to the structure at all) time and key changes. I like lots of prog metal and classic prog rock, but there are many more acts with great musicians who simply can't write a song to save their lives, versus ones who can. Rush regardless of their genre, first and foremost were great song writers.
From 8:35 to the end (particularly from the fully developed rhythm at 9:15 ) is some of the best stuff that Rush ever did. This groove is theirs alone I think. It also pops up in LaVillaStrangiato, this rhythm, right after the long guitar solo.
One has to go to Steely Dan to find such an excellent groovy sound. And the way they do it here (and on Hemispheres) in that messed-up time signature is like magic.
This is one of their songs that hasn't been on my radar for a very long time and I'd forgotten how good it is. Can't wait to crank it up in the car tomorrow.

Great song to react to. With RUSH to really appreciate their music and talents try reacting to their live versions more often. Watching them do this song live is priceless.

If ever I wanted to introduce somebody to listening to Rush for the first time, this was always the song I recommended.
Rush were never ever pretentious. Something that sets them apart from probably every other 70s prog band, even the good ones. The three of them :( (RIP you beautiful hero) were such lovely guys, and their intent was always clear and honest. Neil wrote such deep but simple lyrics with a profound message every time.
I think Rich is on to something here. This is definitely a top candidate for their best LP. "Permanent Waves" is often overshadowed by "Moving Pictures", but it is the major evolutionary (nay, revolutionary!) step in their development. You cannot get to "Moving Pictures" without going through this. What's even more important, is that "Spirit Of Radio" is an unabashedly joyful piece of music. It not only captured what Rush was, within a short running time, but it said "Hey, we're here to have fun too!". "Permanent Waves" was the album that hooked me, and I think it did the same for a lot of other fans.
Such a great song that flies below the radar, even with the band members. Geddy Lee seems perplexed by the popularity of this one...

This era of Rush is when i started listening so I also have a soft spot for this album. What makes Rush so special is that their music is complicated with thoughtful lyrics and many odd time signatures but it is composed so well that it is approachable for the average person. People don't realize they are bopping along to an odd time signature, I sure didn't, I was just enjoying myself.
It is nice to see a couple such as yourselves being true loving mates. Bless you both.

Greetings from Montréal! «Permanent wave» is one of the 8 albums Rush recorded in the northen wood's of the Laurentians in Québec, Canada (Morin Heights): the recording facilities were called Le Studio. I suggest you search for this recording location where so many great albums were made for bands/singers such as April Wine, Nazareth, David Bowie, Cat Stevens, etc... But it was Rush's home. Sad thing what happened to it.
Talk about overwhelming .... that is NATURAL SCIENCE .... also from PW. But it is my favorite RUSH song. But I also played drums for 40 years so it is indulgent to say the least. Back in the 80’s my drum instructor asked me to bring in an album for us to play to. It was PW. Half way through NATURAL SCIENCE his jaw dropped & he just put his hands in a surrendering position.

When I was young songs like this and natural science just for two examples was my escape. Lights off, black light on, stretch back in the bed with the headphones on and my funny cigarette lol and I went on a trip. Rush has a way of making progressive and complex music while meshing everything together just right where it just sounds straight forward and not jumbled all over the place. The ability to do this really shows how great their song writing and musicianship is. Rush will always be the high priest of progressive metal.

Congratulations on the book!! I will be one of many that will be purchasing the book when it hits the stands. My husband is permanently disabled from many illnesses, and this is one of them. TMJ is a PITA, or more like PITJ!!! He has been to many many doctors to no avail, and was also referred to an oral and maxillofacial specialist, an otolaryngologist (also called an ear, nose, and throat doctor or ENT specialist), and a dentist specializing in jaw disorders (prosthodontist, also called a prosthetic dentist) for further treatment. The dentist was the last resort when he wanted to TRY to relieve his symptoms for close to $50,000. Crazy!! Well, needless to say, that was the end of that, so he just suffers. BTW, great Rush song, and great reaction! Kel, I love your barrette. Wherever you got it, you didn't happen to see a Dio one, did you? I think I'm going to start wearing chokers again....they look so cool on you. I use to wear them all the time when I was younger, but I guess you're never to old, like they say. Take care you two!

An underrated Rush song. I heard the Exit Stage Left version before this, and while I was first discovering the band it was one of my favourite Rush songs. I'd not heard it for some time. Great to hear it again. Probably my favourite song on PW.

So...This is the 'cool-down' track, after the epic "Freewill" (worth doing that lyric video) on a pure beast of an album "Permanent waves". It starts with "The Spirit Of Radio" and works it's way to the masterful finale "Natural Science". Do it all...drink it all in. Oh...BTW, can I just mention "Entre Nous" and "Different Strings"...beautiful. It's clearly my favourite album.

I used to play this whole song on my toy casio keyboards.
1 late night back in 80s I was delivering pizza to black neighborhood. 2 old men were on corner talking as I passed by them they heard my stereo n started to dance to the guitar part they waved cheered n smiled.
That scene has stuck in back of my mind. They really enjoyed it.

I grew up a Musician in a Family of Musicians and I have had an Uncle of mine that I have cared for that has epilepsy. He has lived with me for over 15 years and it still breaks My Heart to see him go through a seizure. Again, y'all keep up the Good work and stay safe...

What I find funny is that when I was 14, Rush played at our high school dance. They sucked! I refused to listen to them for the longest time. But then I heard them on the radio many years later and they had gotten good.
Neil is such a great wordsmith...I've loved this album since it came out on vinyl but that was the first time I followed the words..The Outro is so profound! I wonder if she's listened to Fountain of Lamneth yet...

Excellent choice! The following is what happened last 30 years (in short, of course):
My best friend Paul introduced me to Rush, and this became my favourite song. By coincidence, Paul was an amateur meteorologist, and teached/bored our friends group about weather/clouds, etc. He knew all about it!
Some 6 years ago Paul suffered from long cancer and other complications. He died after a lot of suffering ( only 54 years old). I speached at his funeral, and somehow, (knowing his parents-in-law were/are very Christian), I could combine the song/rare video/biblical text. Not to praise myself, but the church liked my speech..

Fantastic reaction as always. Try being a 14 year old kid who has never heard the band and finds out at 5 he's he's been invited to see a general admission show starting at 8... He begs his mom to go to his first concert. And she says yes. Permanent waves Tour and the first time I heard them was live in the Springfield MA Civic center... Of course I've been a huge fan ever since. Keep up the great work. And welcome back.

It's interesting that Kel is wearing a Jim Morrison shirt. I was just today thinking about a kid I knew probably about 50 years ago named Angelo Barbera. When he was 9 years old he would pluck cigarette butts out of the gutter and smoke them. Oddly as he got older he went on to become a very proficient electric bass player, and actually played with the Doors for a time. But some years ago they had to let him go as they got a nationwide tour and he's afraid to fly. And that wasn't going to work out.
