    Both Geddy and Alex used Taurus pedals by Moog. Basically like a set of synth organ pedals. When Geddy was playing bass, he would add synth tones with the pedals, and when playing they keys he would use the pedals for bass tones. Check out the live performance of Xanadu from Exit Stage Left - the multi-tasking is insane. Geddy plays bass, 12-string guitar, keys, and pedals, and that’s the singer! They prided themselves on being able to perform their music with just the three of them. Cheers!

      I'm pretty sure Geddy's double neck on Xanadu consisted of a bass (of course!) and a six string guitar. The only time he plays the six string is at the end of the song. It's a shame that the Exit Stage Left concert video doesn't do a good job of showing what Geddy is doing in this part of the song when he has switched to the guitar. Add to that the pity that it doesn't much show what either Geddy or Alex are playing with their feet since they are playing some difficult synth parts (especially Geddy) with their feet.

    • @matthewhoag2609
      @matthewhoag2609 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@schafn Geddy used the 12-string version. Look up Rickenbacker 4080/12, and you find plenty of images of Geddy. It always fooled me because I could only see six tuning pegs, but come to find out the other six protrude rearward from the head! Cheers!

    • @matthewhoag2609
      @matthewhoag2609 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@schafn I also agree it’s sad they don’t show Geddy better since he is actually playing the lead over Alex’s arpeggios at the very end.

      @@matthewhoag2609 Thanks man! I've been listening to this song and watching the ESL video for years and never picked up that he was playing a 12 string! I've also been to concerts (pretty much every tour from Grace Under Pressure to R40) where I was sometimes relatively close to Geddy and never noticed that the lower neck was a 12 string. Now that I have been educated I can hear it in the song. There is also a video on TH-cam by 66TJP where Mr. TJP plays Xanadu on a 4080/12 and you can really hear the 12 string sound.

    Geddy Lee is playing the bass and using foot pedals for those synth notes. Conversely, when there's a simple bass line, he uses Taurus bass pedals with his feet while playing the keyboards with his hands (and singing). Yes, really. NOTE: there are times where Alex Lifeson is doing the synthesizer pedals (see "La Villa Strangiato") while Geddy is busy doing his multiple tasks, or Neil triggers a synth element from the electronic portion of his drum kit.

    While this is one of my favorites from the band, it’s maybe not the best pick for staring the journey. What you have is three incredibly talented players and writers who are even better than the sum of their parts. You should take this journey, but perhaps start with some of their more radio friendly cuts. Tom Sawyer, Limelight, The Spirit Of Radio, Freewill, The Trees, Closer To The Heart,Subdivisions, The Big Money, Distant Early Warning. Oh and be sure to key on the lyrics because they are some of the best and most thought provoking youlll find in all of music. Enjoy.

    Keyboards and bass simultaneously played by (singer, bassist, keyboardist, composer) Geddy Lee, care of all four limbs of the human body! Not two different players! Lee plays bass while simultaneously playing Moog Taurus foot pedals (like playing piano and accompanying foot pedals to sustain, dampen notes, etc.). These guys were a three-piece that did it all on their own using everything at their disposal both physically and technologically, all the way through their 40-year career! LL

    And I've always found it mind-blowing how guitar and drums keep the alternating 5/4 and 6/4 rhythms going while Geddy's vocals and keys are in straight 4/4 over the top, with the emphasis on certain syllables perfectly matching the accents of the beat! Want to hear something different, Rachel? Try 2012’s The Garden live in Dallas or 1987’s Time Stand Still or 1982’s Losing It.
    As for Alex’s (actually quite legendary) playing, try Working Man Live in Cleveland or YYZ live in Rio or or Headlong Flight live in Toronto.
    Speaking of Lifeson, Guitar World ranks him at No. 8 of the greatest rock guitarists “of all time.” And here’s one more interest accolade for Alex, found in Guitar Player Magazine:
    "The Alex Lifeson Chord” - and Why It's John Petrucci's Favorite
    By Christopher Scapelliti published August 27, 2020
    The prog-metal maestro on why this particular favorite of Lifeson's is his "desert island chord."
    A few years back, John Petrucci went out for a drive with the folks from Cosmo Music (opens in new tab). In the resulting Rockstars in Cars video, the Dream Theater guitarist talked about his favorite solo to play live, his mix of technical and emotional guitar playing, and more.
    Best question in the video: “Desert island chord: You got one chord you can play forever. What is it?”
    “It’s the opening chord from Hemispheres by Rush,” Petrucci replies. “It’s the F sharp major with the added 4th and the flat 7. That should really be named ‘the Alex Lifeson Chord,’ because he invented that.”
    Hemispheres was Rush’s sixth studio album and featured “Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres” as its opening track. The chord is shown above, while the video of the track can be seen below, along with the full Rockstars in Cars video.

    Watch a live video of it to understand how three people can make the sound of a 5 or 6 piece band using their main instruments and foot pedals or triggers from Neil .

    In the interest of accuracy, Neil's name is pronounced "Peeeert", not"pert". Very common mistake. ;) Jacob's Ladder is definitely one of Rush's lesser-known songs, and not truly representative of their sound. Still amazing, though! The rays of sunlight that stream down through clouds like spotlights are called Jacob's Ladders, and this song is a reference to their appearance after a storm. Suggestions to really get into their catalog: Tom Sawyer (of course), YYZ Live in Rio, Xanadu (live,Exit Stage Left 1981), Spirit of Radio, Freewill, Subdivisions, 2112, Red Barchetta, Working Man (Studio and also Live in Cleveland Time Machine Tour), Limelight, La Villa Strangiato (studio or official video), By-tor And The Snow Dog, The Analog Kid, Digital Man, Fly By Night, A Farewell to Kings, well, there's just so many!
    Geddy does indeed play bass and synths at the same time. He and Alex both have banks of foot pedals, and Geddy can play basslines while he's on keys, or play synth with the pedals while his hands are on the bass.
    Yes, Alex Lifeson is the most underrated guitarist in rock history.

    Nice reaction welcome to Rush! If you are a bass player and you like progressive music you will absolutely love Rush. If this song is not your particular style keep in mind that although Rush always sounds like Rush and is very distinctive they were always changing, experimenting and pushing the limits. Rush played together for 40 years and have either 19 or 20 studio albums as well as several live albums. I would encourage you to react to not just live recordings but the video as well. I think as a musician you will really appreciate being able to see as well as listen to what they are doing. As others have mention sometimes Geedy Lee played bass with his hands while playing the keyboard with petals or vice versa. I will list just a few of my favorite live performances below.

    The time signature during the part you were referencing actually alternates between 6/8 and 7/8, one right after the other! As I’m sure others have said, Xanadu from this live album really showcases what rush can do. Watch the video to see all the multi tasking. Both Alex (guitar) and Geddy (bass and vocals) play Taurus pedals for some of the synth sounds, as well as Geddy playing the keys. Neil’s percussion work is amazing, and he stays busy adding the little details. Best part about rush was they had different eras where it was still Rush, but they evolved stylistically from album to album, starting off heavy and bluesey, then growing more progressive, turning into progressive pop almost, heavy 80’s synth, 90’s rock and eventually just hard rock. Every era of rush is interesting.

    Enjoyed your reactions to this one. RUSH has a really eclectic catalogue that includes genres for every musical taste: Classic Rock in the early 70's, Progressive Rock later 70's, "Classic Progressive" most of the 80's, and then a return to a heavier sound in the 90's thru 2015. May I suggest "The Analog Kid"(80's), "Ghost Of A Chance" (90's), and "Touch On The Heart" (2000's) as examples of how unique and talented this band is! Thanks much! ☮

    It was interesting to watch the differing reactions between the two of you. It is a running joke in the Rush world that there are very few female Rush fans. The facial expressions and body language we get from the two of you seem to support that pattern. I have no idea why women don't get into Rush all that much. Jacobs Ladder is one of their more proggy songs, but it is one of my favorites. Perhaps if you were to try the more mainstream songs as has been suggested below you may find that more to your liking. It should also be noted that there are different chapters of Rush music. Their music changes dramatically as they grow older, wiser, and more proficient on their instruments. Maybe something from their more recent catalogue would touch your fancy more so than something from the end of the '70s.

    OMG wrote my first comment before I got to the part where you said you were a bass player! How did Rush not click before? Geddy is one of the best, up there with Squire (one of his biggest influences). So many great bass songs: Red Barchetta, Freewill, Hemispheres, Headlong Flight, Big Money, and the instrumental Where’s My Thing is basically a bass solo with accompaniment, lol. He’s got a distinctive sound with those boosted mids and a slightly overdriven growl. He started on a Rickenbacker but plays mostly Jazz basses. He plays all finger style, but he does a lot of strumming with his first finger too. Keep going with them - you won’t be sorry.
    P.S. the song starts with alternating 5/4 and 6/4, or you could count it as 11 if you want. There’s some 4/4 and a few others, I’m sure. They were genius in their use of odd meters to create musical tension, often releasing it with a chorus of 4/4 or 6/8.

    This song ranks near the bottom of their catalog in my books. The Prog scene was played out by this point. When they advanced into the 80's and incorporated synths, Rush became a whole new band that broke the mold and shed their Progressive skin. It's why they had 40 years of lasting power while bands like Genesis and Pink Floyd just faded away. Rush fans can get stuck in nostalgia all they like, but without the New Wave sound Rush would have been dead in the water after 1981.
    Take Big Money (live) for instance - th-cam.com/video/_wDpVSq6awU/w-d-xo.html This isn't the Rush sound most Rush fans will point you to, even though its insanely complex and Progressive in its creativity. But it paints a much clearer picture of the diversity and talent they had, than any of their early generic Prog Rock songs do.

    • @RDMusicExchange
      @RDMusicExchange  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool, thanks for the suggestion.
      I'm not sure I agree that Floyd and Genesis faded away though. Genesis are on another massive tour (rightly or wrongly), and if the remaining members of Floyd got together tomorrow they would break the internet. :)
      They just didn't keep outputting material as the bands as members left/died.
      In terms of the song we picked, a few people have mentioned that it isn't their favourite, but it was the one that was suggested most to us from other videos, and without knowing any other tracks it's the one we went with.
      (And through the editing process it's grown on me quite a bit.)
      We're looking forward to checking out tracks from throughout their expansive career.
