    Alright fam. Based on feedback, I think I might be doing a part two. This video was absolutely leading somewhere but I unfortunately had to cut it short due to time constraints. If I can manage it, this will be project in several parts, same analytical structure, the whole nine, finally ending with an analysis of all of the possible endings. I have a lot to say about this game that it just wouldn't feel right doing it in a single 50 minute video.
    Next video is probably going to be about Glen Garry Glen Ross, and the next video is about ethics in government run schools, and after that, it's Prey time.

    The best roleplaying in a videogame of my life was in Dishonored 1 - all through the game I'm playing the nonlethal route, I'm a wanted man but I'm a *good* man, I want this nightmare to be over one day and I can't go back to that if I justify their lies. My position will be gone, politically untenable, they won't let me *near* Emily ever again. But on that last chapter... there's no way these men can't be guilty, not when Havelock has dragged their crown princess to this deserted prison, they're culpable, all of them, there's no way they couldn't have seen her. I was a berserker, a spectre of death, every man between me and Emily died - a knife to the back, a bolt through the eye, half a dozen men shredded to pieces before they could blink in frozen time or suddenly finding a grenade in their midst, while I barely slowed my pace. The public would forgive me one massacre, if it meant returning a hero with the princess safe and sound.
    And they did.

    • @dominikmagnus
      @dominikmagnus 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, I roleplayed in this game too. I was a wanted man. And I was pissed off and wanted to kill these idiots. And soon after the start of the game I just quit, cuz the game makes me uncomfortable to do so. You can say, that my protagonist just commited suicide.

    I love this discussion. The fact that the devs of Prey actually have a voice to their "silent protagonist" is so very intriguing. It shows that VO is not something you should do for your game because it's hip and you have the money lying around. It's a design decision.

    You ruined more of this game than you could ever know by watching that Bethesda video. i played the game devoid of spoilers, and my experience seems to be completely different from yours.
    When i first awoke in my barely lived in, almost sterile environment, something felt off. i exhausted dialog, just as you did, but more than the robot set me off. the maintenance woman said something that immediately perked my ears. she basically said, "if we keep talking, im going to get in trouble", that stuck with me for the rest of the helicopter ride.
    The tests were easy and strait forward, i thought "i see, this is like the old look at these lights and lean the controls routine from Halo", but why does he sound disappointed in me? I was so busy doing the test, that i only looked up just in time to see the Dr's corps solidify.
    When i awoke for the second time, my question wasn't, "was that real", it was "how long have i been asleep. a day?, a year?, the city looks fine, so they couldn't have gotten too far". after i stepped out my front door again and saw the dead woman, i went back into my room and crouched. "How, strong am I?, How strong are they?, do i run?, can i fight?" those were my thoughts as i crept up on her body. I tried the elevator, but no luck. i turned back to my room and shut the door behind me. "Ah, a balcony. I bet i have to jump ledge to ledge, to get to the next room".
    Smashing the glass was both surprising and cathartic, that nagging feeling was realized, "i knew somthing was up, i knew there was somthing wrong with that wall" i never imagined that the helicopter ride was fake too, or that i had never left the building, let alone the room.
    You felt as though the next big surprise didn't come until the end but, I yearned to find a real window... wait, could i ever trust a window again? when i stepped into the lobby, i was greeted by the fact that i had already gone to space, i scanned earth, looking for destruction, but it seemed fine.
    Your foreknowledge really did hamper your experience, if you ever read this, i hope i gave you some insight.
    PS. i played as a woman, and i read my relationship to my brother as something else entirely. I characterized him as the older brother, who acted before he thought things through, and I was the younger sister who still managed to be more mature and reflective. Thats why our parents chose me to run things.

    • @StratEdgyProductions
      @StratEdgyProductions  6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I actually cut about 15 minutes off the end of this because doing this video right was a real undertaking. I spent weeks writing and re-writing the script and recording video that syncs up to the narration. While it was a ton of work, it was actually very fun. If this video gets popular, and it becomes tenable, I would love to do a part two.
      Share the video. I know I am going to try and do the same. I don't want it to die on the vine like so many of my other experiments have :(

    • @ZippyLeroux
      @ZippyLeroux 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah as I was writing my request for more I thought, "Jesus, but he's gotta write the script, then get the footage together, and then edit it and record the voice over, it's a full time job for a team!" lol But yeah I liked and shared and algorythmically stroked this video 's balls as much as I could. If I weren't a broke degenerate I'd be a patron too. Anyway even without this monologue narration thing I love your content, keep it up, and thanks!!

    I just had the most hilarious moment with youtube-adds a person ever had i'm certain.. "Let's do an expirement you and I" At this moment i was already sold because I had been binchwatching your videos for a laughingly amount of hours. Then there was silence, and i aticipated the two claps, having my eyes already closed the second you brought it up, because i was just sooo in on it.
    Bashing in my ears on full volume came the sound of a 24/7 Mobile Fantasy Game add trying to get you as stupid as 5 seconds of video and sound can possibly archieve to.
    This time the joes where on them because instead of being annoyed by this concetrated manifestation of human stupidity, i just had to start laughing incontrollably.

    Prey 2017 is such an underrated gem, it really creates this sci fi world that not only just let's you sink your teeth into it but let's you create your own story. I couldn't shake the announcement trailer from my mind forever so I'd always say "my name is morgan" in my head a number of times but as the game progressed, I would say it almost like a question because of the mind trip the game takes you. It also presents this very progressive world that you'd think more people would talk about, I mean there are still spooky sci fi tropes that make you question the morals of characters in the game but it really creates this future in games that is somewhat plausible even as alternate historyish type of world.

    I miss it when RPGs were about Role-Playing.
    Games like Baldur's Gate and Mass Effect were fun but RPGs arent about cinematic stories, reading, or being a fucking strategy game; they are about role-playing.
    I want RPGs to be more like the early Fallout games where role-playing is the main focus or Stardew Valley where you are just dropped into the game world where you play any role you can think of.
    I hate the so called "hardcore" rpg fans who care more about tactics and stats instead of role-playing and world building.

    At first I was a bit put off because you're not as strong a narrator as I'm used to from other game philosophy-whatever channels, but then you started reminiscing about your first great writing experience, which caused me to listen to your script in my head as if I was reading it in an article instead of having it narrated to me, which in turn made me realize that you are indeed a great writer, and that you just gotta practice your radio voice and pronunciation and pacing and so on a bit more until you're able translate your skill from the written to the spoken word. And then I realize that this discrepancy is even kind of fitting to the video's content.
    Thanks for that cool experience mate. Good Luck with your career!
    Edit: I mean your non-character narrator voice specifically there. Your internal monologues are pretty cool. Especially liked the facsimile of a facsimile of a facsimile bit.

    I did see the twist coming my first play through. In fact, I didn’t even try and open the door before going to break the window, the first thing I tried to do was break the window because I didn’t think the game would let me do it. I really had to process it for a second.
    Prey was just a fun game, in general. Don’t misunderstand me...it wasn’t one of the greats. It had some notable flaws. But it was still a blast and, in my opinion, very underrated (I found that a lot of people who thought it was bad, actually just wanted a different kind of game then what they got).

    I completed prey today and I will say from a narrative perspective the implementation for the silent protagonist really caught me because all npcs have an expectation of "action" which is what the player is their to provide. But in lore characters remark on how they dont know the "impetus" behind it and wish to know. And with one of those characters being the protagonist themselves it invites the player to ponder "why are they playing one way or another"

    • @Serahpin
      @Serahpin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why the hell would Bethesda publish a trailer of the first 30 minutes and spoil the game, that's a better question. Most of the time the spoiler doesn't come at the beginning of a game, so nobody is on guard against having the game ruined by watching the first 10-30 minutes.

    Another awesome video! I am actually playing through Prey for the first time and am enjoying it a lot (despite some UI annoyances on PC). I think for a mystery/horror game like this a silent protagonist is a great choice.
    I'm a little worried about the backtracking as it seems to be a common complaint about the game. I haven't had to do much so far though, and I do enjoy the gameplay. I started on hard mode and I think it helped me get into the game as I definitely felt that paranoia, especially at the start.

    • @magmakojote1663
      @magmakojote1663 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ssalamanderr I noticed the backtracking near the end of the game, because at that point there are no new and undiscovered regions, no new enemies or tools, so that was not so much fun, but most of the game I had no problem with the backtracking.

    • @Ssalamanderr
      @Ssalamanderr 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's good to know. I'm still at the point where new enemies are being introduced pretty regularly (just got to Crew Quarters for the first time), so even when I've had to go back to the Lobby or something, it's been swarming with tougher enemies to keep things fresh.
      Pretty sure I've already figured out the final plot twist if there is one though. I guess that's the peril of reading every note and listening to every log. But if it's what I think it is I think it's really cool so I don't even mind.

    I'm sad that the big game developers nowadays want to have a voiced protagonist in their RPGs. Like it would be a show of quality. I've enjoyed my RPGs just like you described at the start of the video, and having a voice actor act as all of my characters in that game, in all it's playthroughs, takes something away from me.

  • @nerdzone

    Am I the only one that is not convinced this game deserves the playing by this video? Prey is good because you can act over the protagonist. Well, guess what, you can do that for a lot of games.

    Okay, I know this is old by now. And I haven't played this game, so maybe? some of this is nonsense or already true, but here are my random thoughts because this is the internet where people don't know that their opinions don't actually matter and will be ignored in the order they are received, myself included:
    1. I like your internal monologue addition. And it kind of makes me wonder why games like this don't voice act internal monologues like that to set the mood. Sure, as a creative thinker I often do this myself. Heck, sometimes I even yell at the dumb-asterisk $#!7 in Skyrim. My SO yells at the TV, so it's only fair I get to yell at games, even in character. But like non-voiced text, or trying to show the illusion you're under through glitches, there's a lot of open-to-interpretation going on. Whereas if you have one specific interpretation to tell, and you want the player to reach that same interpretation, then tell it. Add an internal monologue. Personally, I'm not a fan of voice acting in games, so adding more just means more room for finding it sub-par, but if we are supposed to all be on the same page, then we need to have our hands held.
    2. The part I HATE about the glitches in the intro being used is that so very many video games have bugs like that, so as a plot device we are conditioned to ignore that $#!7. It's a bad plot element to use. Unless you make it less-than-subtle. And even then it's questionable.
    3. Shouldn't that patio door have been impact resistant and/or safety glass? If we're supposed to be on the lookout for subtle flaws in reality, suddenly everything needs to be ridiculously accurate. That it shatters in the way it does makes me think that the reality behind the simulation is in fact still the simulation. Was that the case and by design? I dunno. I haven't played the game. But I'm assuming it's just bad game design?
    4. I know I'm going to a special circle of hell for just thinking this, but... in the opening test sequences, the final room shouldn't have been a Rorschach test. It should have been you, a pipe wrench, and an adorable puppy. What lengths will you go to? Did the coffee cup attack in time to save you from doing something horrible? That'd have been some great $#!7, IMHO.
    5. Innately, I don't trust. With mimicry involved, that means I don't trust A N Y T H I N G. Your suit. Your new friend, the pipe wrench. Your champagne bottle. N O T H I N G. In real life in such a situation, I'd be freaking running around naked, not interacting with A N Y T H I N G until I become absolutely desperate. That the game forces you to be so casual about things is ... kinda lame. Running around naked because you're paranoid would be funny, but appropriately realistic.
    6. "She seems to be reaching out for something, something important, something that could have saved her in those final moments..." THE WORKLAMP! A simple change in game mechanics that would have made soooooooo much more sense to me just after watching this video would have been that mimics are stunned by LIGHT. Not a foamy glue gun. Light. Mimics turn to ashy-gray stone wherever intense light hits them directly. Now any object which emits light is by design trustworthy. Any object which does not is immediately suspect. Make strongly lit rooms safe and dark rooms dangerous. Have enemies move faster the darker the room is. Make your goal in life to turn on lights. Make a power outage a heart attack. Make key items glow. Electronic key cards glow to the color corresponding with their security level. Health kits have a glowing red cross. Glowing terminals are safe to use. Etc. If it glows in any way, it's safe to interact with. If it doesn't glow, shine the work lamp on it. To glue parts of an enemy, shine the work light on them. And better lights, such as a flashbang grenade, are now weapons of mimic destruction. But with an added layer of danger, because smoke, steam, etc. which reduce light distance now reduce a light source's impact on freezing them, making the smoke from a flashbang grenade a Sword of Damocles hanging over your head. Okay, yeah, an old and already done mechanic, but one that would have made more sense than a misapplication of super glue or a cement factory or whatever. Creepy sci-fi in the dark is a classic for a reason. But so many games that do it don't let you do logical things like duct-tape a Maglite to a shotgun or mix up a magnesium enhanced molotov. So then you scream at the game. So maybe it's better that they didn't use this mechanic. But it would have made more sense than the Stay Puft Marshmallow Gun and set them up for a lot of potential mechanics that they'd probably have flubbed later. (Because everyone does.)
    Anywhen, having reached this point in my nonsense, thanks for reading the TLDR of an untimely rant and have a nice day.

      A gun can become a tool when you use it to blow the lock off a door. The Gloo gun doesn't kill anything and you can use it to climb walls. Therefore it feels like a tool. At least to me.

    I don't quite know what is missing in Prey but just did not click with like Bioshock or System shock, it also had the problem that dishonored did in that there are different endings not based on your choices but how you want to play the game. So basicly if you want to get a different ending you have to play a more boring way than how you actually want to.
    Arkane don't make that great games imo, the only actual real great game they have done is Dark messiah. The rest have all had some pretty big flaws holding them back.
