Diabetes affects the kidneys causing nephropathy, where kidneys lose their ability to filter waste products. Diabetic nephropathy, also called Kimmelstiel-Wilson disease or intercapillary glomerulonephritis is characterized by nephritic syndrome and diffuse glomerulosclerosis. As disease progresses an increased number of glomeruli are destroyed by nodular glomerulosclerosis. Diabetes is the most common cause of chronic kidney failure and end-stage kidney disease often leading to the need for dialysis or kidney transplantation.
