    *I don't have a Patreon to take your money, and I'm not yet monetized to take TH-cam's money either. So, I'm not much of a very good pirate. Haha!
    **YOU CAN'T BE SERIOUS (My story behind this got me emotional editing and remembering Kōki - Which I just learned, with certain kanji could have the meaning "Wide Sea" and "Hope")!
    THE MOMENT IS HERE. After many reactions to videos surrounding One Piece, and one video of a declaration of My Dream later, we OFFICIALLY embark on the grand adventure. I want to give a tremendous thank you to everyone who has welcomed me with open arms, and been nothing short of encouraging as I take my first unsteady steps into both a new form of content for the channel, but also a new form of content for me to consume. I will sing nothing but the praises of this pirate crew.
    OUR CREW.
    Enjoy my silliness and sincerity. I have put forth my passion, and now get to enjoy this monumental work of passion alongside you. And there's nowhere else in ALL the BLUE I'd rather be.

      It's so good to be starting this voyage after many weeks of preparation! This was like starting The Oregon Trail as a banker and having lots of money to spend on supplies, but no actual experience with which to do anything.
      BUT now we are out on the open sea! To the next adventure! 🏴‍☠️

      Based how you responded to the first 3 episodes all your viewers will be eating good for a long time. Pace yourself and maybe release multiple episodes per video(like this one) but have fewer overall videos(not sure about copyright nonsense). Also you may want to get a whiteboard or four to help keep track of everything.

      I'm still so new to reaction videos, and episodes 1-3 were my first reaction to a show. It's a way different beast to edit!
      I think I brought in about 3 hours of recording for this video to the editor and realized I'm a little out of my depth. Haha 😅
      So I'll be releasing more one episode reactions to help build a backlog and learn the ropes of this process a little better so I can get back to multiple episode reactions (also because I'll have the time to edit them with many videos ahead scheduled)
      Copyright, surprisingly enough, seems pretty straightforward so far. But, I'm just happy to have people discover me and enjoy what I'm doing.

      fat chance getting paid by TH-cam, TH-cam hates Reaction content. they cant do nothing when it's fair use, but that doesnt mean they have to pay up for that matter. so i strongly advise you set up a Patreon in case someone wants to be generous. plus it doubles as a place where people can still see the vids if Toei comes in to go on a tirade.

    I think it’s worth mentioning, since it’s only really obvious in the manga version, but Luffy has no thought bubbles. There might be an exception somewhere, but Oda was asked about it and basically said that because he is so direct, if he had thought bubbles they would just say exactly what he was about to do.

      Zoro is the same way especially later on. Luffy wants to be free and have fun.

    You're right. Luffy is not stupid, Luffy is ignorant about things he doesn't care to learn about. He's very emotionally intelligent, and he's very strategically intelligent - he's just not very booksmart. He does have the stereotypical anime "goofiness" at times, but that's more of the medium and not because Luffy is unintelligent.
    Luffy is also a very special character, for a reason you might appreciate as someone who's lived in Japan; Oda created Luffy as a criticism of Japanese culture where chasing one's dreams instead of finding stable jobs was frowned upon heavily in Oda's youth. Luffy is unabashedly himself, and never ashamed of being a pirate, being himself. Which is why I'm happy that the live action wasn't ashamed of the goofiness either, they really learned the lesson that the source material was teaching.

      I very much get that sense. I wonder if you've reached the part where I talk about Koki, as that sentiment rings so clear about what the teachers I worked with said about him and how I saw so much of Luffy in him.
      I really appreciate this helpful insight. It makes this journey so much more enriching than watching and processing it on my own!

      ​@@Nastyn1nja808 A lot of people consider him to be an idiot, including Oda too likely, but I disagree. His EQ, AQ, and SQ are all high (especially his AQ and SQ being quite above average), so I personally wouldn't consider him unintelligent. Even his IQ seems to be only a little below average.The only time I ever questioned his intelligence was during Fishman Island when he was talking to Franky. Like, you could call him an idiot, the same way you can call Usopp, Zoro, and Sanji idiots in that they do idiotic things, but they're not necessarily stupid if that makes any sense.

      I don't think I mind if people call him an idiot, but it is irksome when it seems to be used as dismissive of his behavior, instead of really examining his motivations, his personality, and what he's actually saying before, during, and after. He's very direct.
      Because I do think when put Lugfy under scrutiny, you do see a playful intelligence, or an absence of concern.
      Our perspective is that it's reckless, but it seems weird when I also see that people call him strategically intelligent.
      I think about that scene in episode 3 where he's going for a gum gum pistol on Helmeppo, while Morgan winds up and ultimately gets intercepted by Zoro at the last minute.
      I can't help but factor in that his ability to read people and their emotions is far beyond simply understanding, but it's almost like he sees multiple paths before him with different outcomes and he chooses his path and let's the chips fall as they may.
      It's called ignorance, but I'm almost convinced he has a heightened state of conscious awareness that is greater than the average person's perceptions.
      And the funny thing is, it could easily point back to Oda as lazy writing, but instead there's enough nuance and plausible deniability that it would make more sense to say it's because he's an idiot.
      Maybe he's showing a mirror that is reflecting back to us our own misunderstanding of the nature of conscious reality.
      Or something like that. 🤣

      He really can't read a room & often says or does things that no sane person would. He also absolutely does not care who you are, if you piss him off he's going to fight you, even if he would absolutely lose
      However when it comes to emotional IQ & battle IQ he's one of the smartest in the series,
      He's able to read his friends emotions like a literal book & knows when things are serious
      &
      His battle IQ is so high he's able to be one of the strongest in the verse (not really a spoiler he's the main character of course he's going to be that strong eventually) with a simple devil fruit like his
      Basically, his Iq is very much split,
      On one hand he's an absolute moron
      On the other hand he's extremely smart

      🙏 I can only approach this story, this community, and this comment with a humble heart. For I find myself so fortunate and rich with the goodwill of so many.
      I thought it was funny when Luffy asked if someone would be generous to let him take a boat.
      But maybe that generosity is there. And while I'm not in need of a boat, I'm thankful for the generosity that others allow me to take a part of their journey in One Piece, and allow me to add it to mine.
      Fair winds and fortune await us all on this grand adventure!

      Except that he's already seen it..... it's bad enough he didn't record his Live Action watch thru, let alone his original anime one. I enjoyed all his other content however!

      @E.T.FoneHome-lz4ce Yeah, that guy's an absolute a-hole. You can see how disingenuous he is as he struggles to make up lies about how he feels about the show.
      Nobody else on the internet struggles as much as him to get their thoughts out. Must be hard to think what to say when you've seen it all already.
      I bet when he said he had it as second monitor content in the dub while he was editing videos, he was secretly hanging onto every word! There's no way he was distracted by recognizable voice actors while batch recording dozens of gameplay videos (including another one that will go live in 4 hours).
      I smell a rat. And this Noxiddar guy is the rattiest of them all!
      But I bet he appreciates that you enjoyed his other content. 🤣

      @@Noxiddar I binged all your videos and liked them, then watched this one very excited to see your reaction. However you breached massive reaction channel etiquette. You chose to wait very very long into the video and first episode before revealing that you have seen one piece previously. You knew this was sketchy and weird and bad reaction channel etiquette, so you chose to not lose as many views as you might otherwise by revealing it in any of your other videos leading up to this one. And to boost retention time on this one.
      Advice: Never respond to negativity, and never respond to haters or trolls. Funnily enough I was neither, I was your new found fan. One you've now lost with your weird little passive aggressive reply.

    You are probably the only one who react to a show like this. You see a deeper picture in everything. The way you discussed about Coby, Luffy and Morgan is spectacular. Also I love when you share your own experiences while watching. Idk why but there's so comforting about that. Keep doing what u doing and you will rise to the top very soon. Also exited to hear your thoughts about the political side of the OP when you get there

      This means so much to me to hear that it means so much to you! I've been incredibly blown away by how welcoming and accommodating the One Piece community has been!
      I don't use it in my intro anymore, but in my older videos, I always used the tag-line "Art-Forged Entertainment."
      I wanted to hold myself to the standard that what I did added value for me and for my potential audience.
      One of the things I've found so sweet and endearing about reacting to One Piece is that I've had these memories and experiences from Japan kind of rolling around in my brain for the better part of a decade, if not slightly more than a decade.
      It's been so incredibly rewarding for me to let those memories out to be shared and given new life to breathe in the minds of others.
      That's the magic inherent in storytelling. And so it's hard not to appreciate what a tremendous feat Oda has accomplished in the last quarter century getting these ideas out of his head to share and live in the minds of so many.
      And so I endeavor to add value for you and for me. Not taking anything for granted or away from the incredible mind that imagined this deeply interesting story.

    You caught it pretty well, luffy may not be the most intellectual but his ability to read people (emotional intelligence) and understand them is what makes him so amazing.

      It's so true, and I think he even takes it beyond just a general understanding of people's feelings, but he seems to be able to quickly analyze and deduce the area of resistance that has kept them from pursuing their dreams.
      He uses ridicule, not as a demeaning mockery for mockery sake, but to spur people to move from inaction, and you can see the turnaround effect it creates on the people he meets.
      It's so deeply satisfying to watch. The perfect quality of a captain--nay, the future King of the Pirates! 🏴‍☠️

      ​@@Noxiddar There's a moment far into the series (I'll point it out whenever you get there) where this ability of Luffy's hits hard for me. To stir people from inaction and acceptance of their situation and condition to take action and take back control of their lives is a trait the greatest of leaders should have.
      From the beginning I wanted Luffy to be Pirate King, but that moment was a big reason why he SHOULD be the Pirate King

    I really liked your introduction about the journey of becoming king. The journey to become a person able to lead, able to do whats neccessary and to be a provider of safety etc. Thats the hard part and it will be a reoccuring theme in one piece as well from several perspectives. Enjoy!

      I'm glad you enjoyed! I'm doing my best to keep fairly consistent with a few uploads a week! Just uploaded one today, and another one scheduled for Thursday!
      I'm hoping that throughout the week I can really build up a lot of videos and eventually expand to more days and THEN more times a day!
      Maybe in 6 months we'll be swimming in reactions. I'm excited for the future!

    Luffy's emotional intelligence is phenomenal, and he's very much the sort to have his eyes firmly set on his goals to the point that unrelated things (and 'bookish' things) just don't really register in his brain the same way. He's a man of action and emotion, not a man of planning or intense thought, basically ^^

    The story you told about your student was really sweet. It's so sad how adults see such a bright child with so much potential and say he'll never amount to nothing. It's just so cruel and shortsighted. If people like that weren't around we'd live in such a miserable, boring world. I hope he's doing okay wherever he is.

      I hope this too. 🙏 I do know that he was well liked by his peers. Maybe it's a generational thing. He's part of the new brand of upstart pirates!
      Even if I saw him from year to year at a different school (I worked at 5 Elementary schools and had him in almost all of them 😅) he always had the same smile and energy. His personality never wavered once!
      Maybe if we make enough noise in this world, he'll find this video. Who knows!

      ​@@NoxiddarHe reminds me of a Chinese American kid I met a long time ago named Jay. I met him at a special camping trip my old church set up. He was a bundled of joy and we hit it off well during that trip. Unfortunately I never saw him at church after that trip. I regret not trying to keep in touch with him. I know his family owned a restaurant not far from where I live and I believe it's still there but I have no idea if his family still owns it

      I know you just started this huge journey of One Piece but now knowing that you were a teacher in Japan I highly recommend reacting to Assassination Classroom because with your reaction style and being a teacher I know it's a good fit. It's only 2 seasons but I promise it's great. One Piece is my Bible but this is on the same tier in terms of what it means to me and educators reactions are the best.

    Great reaction, Luffy is never stupid, he just has his own way of filtering what is of meaning to him and what is not, and so he comes as ignorant in situations but actually really smart in others

      I ALMOST ran out of hats! I have some more ideas to play around with, but I think the next several reactions will be a bit more straightforward. Haha. Glad you noticed!
      Maybe I'll have a clearer picture with more episodes under my belt, but I didn't even necessarily find himself ignorant either. His purpose all along was to assemble a crew of 10. He'd likely been aware of areas of shortcoming. But he never let's that impede his forward momentum.
      And maybe the other half of it is the almost Jack-Sparrow-like happenstance where situations just kind of work out in his favor. Making that perceived "ignorance" more of a punchline than a character flaw.
      It's genuinely enjoyable to watch. It's almost like I can hear Oda thinking "Wouldn't it be funny if..." and then watching the natural progression.
      And it skirts this fine line of brilliance and ridiculousness that I can't help but think is just part of the genius of Luffy's character.
      The more I pick it apart, the more philosophical it becomes. And maybe it's like that because it touches on primal universal truths about being human, but also, probably more so, is just humorous.

      @@Noxiddar the first hat came and I was like 'did that hat appear out of no where or am I tripping' had to rewind to make sure, then they kept coming, my favorite is the white cowboy one, sorry don't know what else to call it hehe 😅
      Luffy is actually my favorite character, it started with that 'I hate you' comment to coby and was official in episodes 80 to 83. What I really love about him is he doesn't care where you came from or what you did before to consider you family, what people may see as an offensive act when he ignores a backstory or just not care about something said around him is his way of making a point that nothing will change his view on a situation, he's determined, goofy most of the time, but when he's serious it's for all the right reasons and he makes the right dicisions when he needs to. I had the same love to him now as I keep up with the story as I did back at 2013 when I started one piece, maybe even more, I was never, not even once, disappointed in his character. I hope you come to see more of him in coming reactions.

      Yeah, the cowboy hat is definitely my favorite (as evidenced by my official intro)! The sailor hat is my father's (he was in the Navy) and the blue ensigns hat with the little bit of patina showing on the Navy logo was my great grandfather's hat he wore in World War 2!
      I think the praise and adoration you have for Luffy is really well translated in the live action, too. One of my favorite moments is when Zoro re-emphasizes that he is a pirate hunter, and Luffy just casually throws it back without any change in demeanor with "You keep saying that". 😄
      I'm looking forward to growing with the crew.
      P.S. - The song "As Long As You Love Me" by Backstreet Boys popped into my head when you were describing how Luffy doesn't care what someone's personal history is. Haha.

      Yeah, I really love Luffy's character, my number one character of all time not just in anime and maybe that comes from how many times I rewatched one piece, everytime I see new things about each strawhat and I love watching people react to them. and I'm looking forward to watch it again with you! I hope it's a great journey for you as it is for me.
      and Yeah the live action did great, but I was a tiny bit disappointed that they missed few moments I personally think are great to build Luffy's character but either way they did great job and managed to set many people on the journey of one piece.

    Great reaction/commentary, very funny exchanging of hats, the pauses to talk about your experience makes me feel more like watching the series with a friend than watching a "reactor" doing their job. Loved it 👍

      This was my first time reacting to a show. I was initially nervous and put it off for a little bit longer than necessary, so I told myself, "Let's just have fun with it." That's the whole spirit of One Piece.
      I definitely love to be unexpected, so I don't want those things to feel gimmicky. I just know there's a lot of people out there who watch a lot of reactors and are expecting a certain format.
      It's funny you mentioned the feeling of sitting down watching something with a friend! That was always my goal with my let's play gameplay videos, too!
      I really wanted to capture that feeling when I was a kid and going to a friend's house and vice versa, and the way we'd goof and play games and adlib stories and jokes while we played.
      So it's definitely part of my "style," and it makes me incredibly happy you picked up on that!

    One Piece is also a fabulous journey through the evolution of animation techniques over the last 25 years. These first 3 episodes are very different from the last 3. But just as captivating.

      Yes! It's one of the more fascinating elements I have looked forward to with reacting to this show. It very much is a product of its time. And so to dive into it and revisit it, it's a cultural lens of sorts. An animated time capsule!
      I feel like, especially for me, it's a whole treasure trove of discovery waiting to be unearthed!

      Luffy is so masterly written because he seems like a solved mystery on the surface. But Oda has written him in such a way that you COULD peel back layers and give meaning to what ISN'T so obvious.

    Nami wasn't introduced in the manga until Orange Town. She was popular in the manga so the anime adaptation forced her into every single one of Luffy's pit stops before that. Anime viewers basically see her in almost every episode until she eventually gets formally introduced.

      It's really been such a pleasant journey so far! I finished recording episodes 9 and 10 (focusing on individual episodes for now - especially because I'm so long-winded, Haha!) tonight. So it was fun seeing how wildly different Usopp's story is from the OPLA.
      I'm glad you have enjoyed my stories as well!
      There are many more adventures to look forward to, but sometimes it's good to take time and look back!

    I just finished the Live Action myself (had seen the first three and procrastinated watching too long, and had to wait for payday to renew netflix and continue watching it) I love the Live Action and anime so much! I can't WAIT for Season 2 of the Live Action!!!!!!

      @@Noxiddar I need to catch up to the anime, honestly... I'm about 200 episodes behind I think... I can't remember where exactly I left off.. I had to stop watching it because my old laptop would have the computer equivalent of seizures whenever I attempted to watch anime, play the Sims, etc for any period of time. My new laptop is much better able to handle it all XD seeing the live action might just be the boost needed to get back in to the anime

    idk how i found you but subbed. You seem very earnest in your analysis and recounting your past experiences while connecting it to the messages this series has to offer. (i've been a one piece manga fan since I was young, like 2007 or so, but i just started watching the anime with my bf since we finished the live action together and as his first intro to the world of OP, he loved it. he'll pretty much be starting his anime journey alongside you : D )

    And so it begins. I didn't appreciate these first few episodes as much as as I do now.
    When Luffy told Coby that even if he died on the journey to Pirate King he would be alright with that. It was powerful. He was set on this journey and no matter the cost he would keep going forward.
    I summarize my path as being stuck in a crossroads. I fear taking the wrong path. I admire Luffy's convictions and I should commit to a path, despite the odds and hardships on that path.

      The wonderful thing is that you are aware of it. How many people go through life stuck in place assuming that it is their external world holding them back because they haven't done the inner work to find the roadblock they have put in their path.
      I certainly think it helps that I've SEEN these episodes before, so I could better focus on HEARING them.
      I can't promise every video will be so heavily laced with character analysis and personal stories, but these first episodes are so, as you put it, powerful.
      They are the call to action for those who are willing to hear it!

      @@Noxiddar Couldn't agree more. There are many moments in the East Blue that I look back at with a deeper understanding than when I first watched them back in 2015/16. I only wished I understood some of these things sooner but when I started I only saw a silly cartoon, it wasn't until episode 37 that it finally clicked that One Piece was far more than that.
      On the journey there will be people who say "It's not that deep." But for me that's the most insulting thing you can say about this story. They can't see a goofy looking pirate show tell a meaningful story. Deeper moments down the line some people hate or downplay while I cry to them.
      The biggest lesson I learned when watching One Piece is: Let the story mold you, but don't let others tear you away
      I made a mistake once believing people who hated a part of the story and almost quite the series. Eventually I came back but I learned to watch and think for myself and be skeptical of other's opinions. Half the stories I love I wouldn't have read if I listened to critics.

      I welcome critics and cynics. I'm not some professional, scholarly, or entertainer who lives and dies by the opinions of others.
      I'm simply a man on a journey through a story rife with opportunities of self-discovery and betterment along the way.
      There are a couple of incredible men of yore that really helped influence how I deal with the cynical naysayers of this world. Pay close attention:
      C.S. Lewis:

To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly.     You're so spot on about the Japanese VA's and the exclamatory style. They are able to have such a special emotion. And they can use dramatic exclamations in a way that is so endearing and relatable even, but in English live action it would be too over-the-top and/or campy. That is one of the main challenges of making a 1-to-1 translation from anime to LA imo, along w effects and cost, it is so tough to match that style w out it being annoying in live action.. I agree I enjoy the voice actor style

      It's funny you mention how over-the-top or campy the dub would be because I watched this Netflix Japan SBS with the original voice cast that just came out, and they were talking about the challenges and joys of dubbing for their live action counterparts, and how the VA for Usopp said that he received direction from Oda that Usopp should be milder and less over-the-top, wanting to bring out more "humanity" in the performance.
      I thought this was incredible insight because it shows even Oda recognized that 1:1 was never the goal, but instead to make a good presentation of the spirit of the character.
      I'll never talk down the live action since it's what lit a fire under me to jump in and react to the anime.
      I mentioned I had seen the dub up through Arlong Park, but this was before the OPLA, so I was kind of actively trying not to pay too close attention to it. I mostly put it on on a second monitor or my TV in the other room while I edited videos because the videos I was watching leading up to the OPLA release from OP creators felt too spoiler-y.
      So I really consider my reactions less critique and analysis and more appreciation of the art that went into creating this. Whether it's the story, animation, color, mood, tone, theme, philosophies, vocal performances, sound effects, musical score, memories triggered, and genuine emotional responses, I really try to focus on "building appreciation."
      I'm really glad to hear your thoughts on this, and I completely agree with the layers of nuance, depth, and unique humor that blends to create such a joyous form of storytelling.

    Really hyped for you! I enjoyed watching your previous one piece stuff. I'm glad you integrate your personal stories/experiences and your train of thought while watching stuff.
    I'm excited that you eventually plan to go through the manga as well because I think the quality of the anime isn't that great for the most part.
    Also please just watch/react for your enjoyment. Loads of youtubers get stuck reacting to one piece for years so making videos in batch is probably a better idea.
    Enjoy your journey! Loads of arcs get better in retrospect as we keep getting more info!

      I definitely want to experience the story from its source. But I also don't want to experience it from their first, as I sometimes think appreciation from the original source can spoil the enjoyment of an adaptation.
      I've spent enough time calloused and hard of heart towards this property. I've no wish to do so any longer!
      I'm kind of treating it almost like the way I watch movies. I started with the live action (theatrical release), and now I'm moving on to the anime (extended edition), and then I'll move on to the manga (director's cut with commentary!)
      And just like after having seen the theatrical release, I brought the movie home and watched the special features BEFORE I watched the movie!
      I feel so honored and privileged to carry the torch of a new wave of One Piece fans, and I am delighted for this journey I will undertake!

    Luffy's EQ is crazy high. He is very aware of people's emotions, needs, and desires. He also very smart when it comes to battle. Is he a scholar? Not really.

      There are many more stories to share! I'm really glad I had Kouki as a student, too! He taught me so much about school culture in Japan. But he also showed me how resilient you can and should be when there is something you want.

    When I was first watching/reading this in the early 2000s I thought Luffy was kind of dumb, to be fair I was sort of poisoned by Naruto who can also be pretty dense at times.
    But when I got older and picked up the Manga again, I really started to see Luffy as a lot more emotionally intelligent than most people give him credit for. And honestly like Luffy can be pretty dense at times too, but he's always there for his friends, and he's always driven by his goal to go on an adventure and become the king of the pirates. Luffy might not be the most educated of characters, he can be a little dense, he makes mistakes and acts on impulse, but he's got a good heart. I think his force of personality, his willingness to believe in other peoples dreams and push for them shows an amount of maturity that most people spend their entire lives striving for, it's what really truly sets him apart as a captain of a crew; his belief in others and in himself opens the door for others to believe in him.

      I love this viewpoint.
      I used the idea of movement and a Luffy who doesn't let you stand still, because I think a lot of dreamers tend to carry dreams as a means of comfort and not action, letting something else hold them in place.
      But above all else, I use it to describe me. I was stuck in my ways. I talk a little more about my reluctance to even start One Piece in my non spoiler review of the OPLA (which, if you haven't seen, is a very sentimental video). It's my treasure because it's the moment I gave in and fully embraced this world and made the decision to start this anime journey.
      I was so compelled by what I saw. It lit a fire in my heart and rekindled my love of STORY and storytelling. I no longer sat locked in place, resigned to upload my 500th gameplay video to a small audience of 10, and instead actually start to CREATE. To chase my DREAM to entertain the world.
      Some of it may be the educator in me. How many kids I've listened to call themselves stupid, and how many call others stupid without trying to learn.
      I just won't do it with Luffy. That's my story with Koki, too. I look past the surface. It's why a lot of people kept reminding me about Usopp and the Boy Who Cried Wolf, and I knew that, it's just that there was so much more to it than a surface level observation.
      Watch Luffy's eyes. Because his eyes broadcast his intentions. When his eyes are wide, he's taking in information. When he has a slight squint, he is directing his focus on someone (that he's probably about to fight), and when his eyes are hidden, it's full serious go time. So then it gets really fun when Oda plays with lighting and you get one eye hidden and one eye fully open.
      It's almost like a second character attached to Luffy. It's fascinating to watch!

    You're right, Japanese VA is great when it comes to anime but the reverse is also true. I recently learned that _King of the Hill_ is really big in Japan. And that's basically because it's an American slice-of-life anime. And a lot of people prefer watching both it and American cartoons in general in the original English.

    Nailed it on the Koby thing. First he’s going fishing, then he’s kidnapped (let’s say taken by a problem) then he is a prisoner to that problem and then that monster (big bad ugly thoughts) torments and tells him what to do and he feels too weak and feels stuck.
    Until Luffy (all good heroes are the embodiment of hope) comes along and shows him a way out.
    And when he’s not a prisoner to those thoughts any longer he then hesitantly announces his dreams, even though he’s scared to go after them.
    Koby is ALL OF US at lvl 1.
    The story about koki (sp) was so fun!!!

      You'll have to believe I typed out an incredibly insightful follow-up comment using quotes from Carlos Casteneda about how a path is a path and how Luffy exemplifies the Teachings of Don Juan, even almost paraphrasing him when he tells Zoro in the Live Action that if the path to what he wants seems too easy, then he is on the wrong path.
      But there's no way I'm typing that out again on the phone. Believe me, it was worthy of a congratulatory pat on the back.
      This will have to suffice.
      But I love the sentiment you shared about how Koby is like us, and I wholeheartedly agree. Level 1, but things are looking up!

      You know, I never really thought about that. A lot of hats were from TH-cam skits, or costumes while streaming. Some are pieces of history, family memorabilia, or just hats to save my balding pate from the angry summer sun beating down on me.

    This is whats best for the one piece universe as a whole, before you know it you’ll be hundreds of episodes in the large episode count is a great problem to have. The story is so good you WANT more thats what people fail to realize, enjoy the journey!

    Yes finally! Someone who will enjoy the true beauty,depth and brilliance of the One piece world in Anime. Welcome to the greatest adventure in your life!
    Sometimes It’s so surreal for me that whenever I watch each episode of One piece it feel’s literally that I’m inside the One piece world with the Strawhat crew which is beyond crazy, maybe because I’m too invest and all.
    P.S There’s also the main reason why Luffy is upfront blunt, nonchalant and unapologetically honest he is, you’ll see but other than that, most of it is his personality. For me Luffy is emotionally intelligent.

      The sound design is incredibly immersive! It pulls me right into the world, and the animation is the visual vocabulary that helps me explore it.

      We’re all looking forward to your reactions for many episodes to come because It’s such a treat and unforgettable.
      Funny thing with One piece is the more you immersed yourself to the world of OP the more information that connects the puzzles. Oda-san never missed, I also love how your question from (example) chapter 20 will be answered in full detail in (example) chapter 200 of why, when, where, who, and it connects too in (example) chapter 890. I also love how Oda never forgets even a minor character.

    About the Luffy being dumb thing, he's dumb by regular standards but he's very emotionally intelligent. He can't read the room but most of the times he's an incredible judge of character. In loads of shows you'll see that things happen to the main cast/characters but in One Piece, Luffy happens to others. He's a ball of blunt positive energy that changes lives as he keeps moving forward.
    Fun fact: In the manga, Oda intentionally never draws any thought bubbles for Luffy because he always speaks what's on his mind out loud.

      But I think he's being very intentional with the appearance of being an idiot.
      It has to do with my namesake. So I'll save that for a later video idea!

    Currently on my list, there are total 11 TH-camrs, including you, who started their OP journey after the LiveAction, or the popularity of OP near the time of all the marketing.
    Your approach was different, but it still can be considered only after LA.
    I needed that 11th guy, due to reasons, you will know of..maybe like Luffy says :- About 10 men should do, 10 men and a Bird. So the 11th is Luffy. But there is another reason...you will know.

    "Why is the Japanese VA so good at exaggerating expression... if this happens in a Western adaptation you jsut want to turn it off."
    There's several things at play here. The first being that the Japanese voice actors are just of a higher caliber of skill; they're generally more talented because there's a bigger pool of talent to take from while the voice actors often have experience in more diverse roles. The type of work they tend to get is also more fluid in tone, whereas Western animation and voice actors tend to be specifically cartoons/animated movies. The Japanese voice actors in anime have a larger range as they're required to (most Western cartoons are aimed at children, whereas anime is more broad). These factors compared to American voice actors is just a different size pool, which is why there's a lot more reused voice actors across many different IPs in American dubs.
    That's one side of it. The other side is the way that American's tend to mix the audio. For Americans the audio mixing is generally done the way that they do it for cartoons and younger audiences; this means that the voice is treated as more important than everything else going on (Standard American speaking volume doesn't help as there's not too much of a change between loud talking and shouting, less range to take advantage of) as it's convention to mix the audio for a younger crowd. Think how easily Dora the Explorer's voice is heard compared to live action voices. Think of it like an audio version of an age literacy estimation.
    The Japanese don't bother with that and their lower normal speaking volume also helps. Apart from that there's also the rest of the audio and how that's mixed. The Japanese voices fit in the environment; there's voice echo where appropriate, room sizes, the sound effects, voice, ost, etc, and it's all mixed appropriately for the situation where each individual part becomes like an instrument in an orchestra working together to get the right feeling for the scenes. The Americans, by comparison, put too much creedence to individuality where the person and their voice tends to overpower everything else in the scene. This makes the voice actors a lot less immersive in the end product as each scene and circumstance becomes more about the person talking (which sits ontop and overpowers everything else often with little attempts to fit the voice to the environment) rather than the event itself.
    This will ruin American voice acting for you in most productions, but if you listen to it well; you can hear the studio room that they're recording in with all it's noise dampening. This is why it's more cringy, it's a break in immersion and you can hear that the screams feel false (this is regardless of how good the actual take from the voice actor is, this isn't always a skill issue). That's typically why American dubs feel more like the kid in school who has god and anime on his side rather than a believable character fighting for his life.
    The One Piece voice actors are also very talented and you'll find out as you go on that they will go all out for some scenes in a way that I've just not seen replicated elsewhere.
    If you liked live action Luffy, you'll likely like this Luffy more. Not because the actor in the live action was doing a bad job, but because he's been a bit watered down and rounded along the edges. Anime Luffy is just more raw. I mean, you ever heard of a protagonist that hears someones sad backstory and then laughs in their face and tell them he hates them for being a coward? Then hearing someone spill their heart out to the protagonist about their dream looking for reassurance and Luffy's just "how the fuck should i know if you can, i don't know who you are". Luffys something special and it can fly under the radar with how jovial he is.

      I'm blown away at how masterfully you dissected that question and put it under the microscope.
      As you'll find in the next episode reaction, I mention that I had had the dub on as background noise before, but I found it distracting. Your explanation here makes a LOT of sense.
      I do think a third factor at play here that isn't always immediately pointed out is how the Japanese voice performances mirror Japanese culture and society.
      Before I went to Japan to teach, I thought I'd be walking into a classroom with crickets and the most highly disciplined young minds on the planet.
      They are great kids, for sure. But, I've seen kids act like a Luffy or Naruto. I've listened to teachers shouting at their students with the same timbre as an annoyed Zoro, while a student, and even another teacher in the background laugh.
      When I watch the Dub, it seems almost like a parody. Generally, for as loud and obtuse as Americans can get. We generally seek to remove that behavior when it pops up.
      So, everything you listed about the English dub process makes so much sense. Especially the smaller talent pool. There were VA performances that sounded ripped from half a dozen different anime I'd started dubbed.
      I do think you hit the. Ail on the head about the overall composition and mix of voice, sound, and music being better in the Japanese original, and I can't help but agree.
      I find I am able to distinguish and appreciate so many more elements to the production for this exact reason.
      My hope and theory is that if I work backward from the Live Action, to the anime, and then to the manga, I will discover more and more layers of appreciation as I discover the path back to the source himself (Eiichiro Oda).

      @@Noxiddar Thanks man, that's some high praise. I think that's a pretty good way to go about it, going live action, anime and then manga. There's a lot of material to get through but I can easily say that it's worth it; I hold One Piece as a golden standard of creative writing; if it was written in a different media it would be talked in the same circles as Terry Pratchett or Tolkein as it has that level of depth. I've been back and forth through it and in parts plenty of times and no matter how many times there's always more things to find and investigate. Often hidden in plain sight that only really makes sense after you go through it a second time; Oda's a world class artist in the subtle set up and pay off in long form story telling; sometimes being totally innocuous small background details or statements that get glossed over quickly because they seem so unimportant at the time.
      I'd suggest having a wee notebook to keep track of some things that interest you or stand out. Given the decor of the vid I'd recommend it especially because Oda is a massive history buff and often takes inspiration from well known literature, pop culture and mythology (particularly Norse).

    I love OPLA, I really do, but I have one great complaint against it. It didn't show properly, in my opinion, why Zoro changed from 'Not a crew!' to 'I will follow you, my brother, my captain, my king". My other issues with the TV series are more like "It's different from the manga and I think that manga did it better", but in this case, without Luffy saving Zoro from the certain death, Zoro as the paragon of loyalty feels completely unearned.
    In OPLA Luffy released Zoro, but it was no imminent danger for him then and he returned a favor by helping defeating Morgan (instead of fleeing). Then Zoro saved Luffy from Buggy, then Zoro saved Luffy from marines and... 'I will make everything for you, Luffy'. It was sad, especially since 'the well scene' was crafted in a way that may have allowed Luffy to save Zoro for once (it could go this way - Zoro has almost got away from the well, but suddenly he starts falling while reminding himself his promise, one moment before the crash he is caught by Luffy - or something like that).

      I think this is a valid reason. It also highlights why I'm confident my decision to consume manga last will make for a much more pleasant viewing experience.
      Back in the day, a bag of chips was filled to the top, then it started being filled with less, and now you pay a premium on half a bag of air.
      I tend to actively look for things I like and disregard the things I don't. You'll be hard-pressed, even years down the line, to hear me voice displeasure about something. There's just not much substance to be found in what doesn't work.
      In other words, I never want to settle with being dissatisfied at half a bag of chips!🤣
      Unless it's a video game where I can't even manage to walk straight without a catastrophe occurring. I'll complain from the earth to the sky about that. (Makes for fun occurring. and editing later, though)

    around the 36 minute mark you started talking about how you are actually kind of glad getting into the series now that you are older, I didn't watch thru the series till i was 26 and i felt the same way, I know the series would have hit way different if I got into it as a kid when it started

      I'm glad that I'm ready to take this journey now. No matter how gargantuan of a task that actually is.
      I wish I could go back and tell my younger self why I was so hesitant and how so much has changed.
      But I'll settle for going back through these videos and fondly watching the change from video to video.

    You are right. Luffy is never stupid. He can read people and people's emotions so easily and quickly. Its almost like an instincts and he doesnt need to use brain to process. And he is so care-free of everything and determined about the things he believed so he doesnt think of anything he doesnt care about. These all makes him thinking so little but i really think this is a high-level intelligence. He is just not the standard knowledge clever person.       As a first-time reactor, I was kind of surprised by a few things:
      1. I'll never pause enough for someone. (I legitimately had a commenter tell me I stopped too much, and then in a later comment in this SAME video tell me I talk over too many important things).
      2. There really is a level of skill when it comes to discerning when to speak, when to listen, and when to pause and go in.
      As far as first episode reactions go, I'm happy I got a chance to share some stories and take a moment to think about characters and maybe sneak a toe into the kind of creative mind like Oda has to come up with this.
      It's not perfect, but I'm perfectly happy with it and welcome any and all feedback.
      Reacting is a skill I'd like to improve on. A series with over a thousand episodes seems like a great place to cut my teeth. Haha.

    I prefer way more someone who pause the video to elaborate on a comment than someone who misses stuff by talking too much over it. And yeah Luffy is simply: simple. He's an avatar for the relatable, simple, uneducated common man (staw hat peasant if you will) or child unyielding his fundamental freedom, ambition and personal feelings versus societal expectations, authoritative power and rival entities.
    And unlike the live-action version who justifies himself as a good guy and different kind of pirate, Luffy just IS those things. Luffy just is, simply. He doesn't think things through too much, which emphasize the purity of his acts according to his unfiltered feelings. He doesn't think about morality, but he's a good guy and act as as such.

      So far i find all the commentary very pertinent and doesn't detract from the reactional aspect all, as far as i'm concern. Contrasting to many other channels i've seen who are impertinent in the commentary aspect or ingenuine /inattentive in the reactional aspect , you are among my current favorites @@Noxiddar

      @@Babawze I appreciate that! I'm still new to reacting in general, and it's such an established medium that I think people come expecting a certain kind of format from some of their other favorite creators.
      So they make up these rules in their mind about how things should be done, and regardless whether it is criticism or constructive feedback, I know it comes from a place of well-meaning.
      People deeply care about One Piece. It's one of the best things I've enjoyed so much so far in this journey. I love being able to hear how much this story means to so many.
      So, I tend not to take any criticism personally. But if you start seeing some cringe-y intros in the coming videos, you'll see how much I love to poke fun at the ridiculous nature of TH-cam comments, and the very strong desire for people to want me to be what they want me to be. It's all fun, and a helluva ride.
      I'm glad you decided to let me be part of your One Piece journey, and I deeply appreciate you choosing to play a part in mine!

      Exactly. This is probably why Koki always ran ahead of his class to meet with me and talk about the things he liked. He must have recognized that I was an adult, but I didn't place any weight of expectation on him.
      I'm glad he trusted me, and I hope he's following his dreams. As 10 years later, I'm now inspired by him.

    so something i like pointint out: here we already see some huge differences between the anime and live action just in the protrayal of the first two antagonists:
    -Alvida is more classically vain, being obsessed with being seen as beautiful and hurting everyone who says otherwise. As the live action version isn't quite as unnattractive (and the joke would't work as well in live acton anyway) they instead make her more obsessed with fame and notoriety, which while still vain is more subtlly so as the layman wouldn't think it would be.
    -Meanwhile in Shells Town we see Morgan in general is more tyrannical, wanting a child to die simply because she went against his orders to not feed zoro. In the live action we only see Helmeppo abusing his position, meanwhile we see Shells Town is actually SUFFERING under Morgan's control, as are the lower ranked marines.
    -In general Morgan is far more cruel and egotistical in the anme. While he has shades of it in the live action his vanity and ego is more subtly referenced there and the worst he does is try and get Zoro killed for defying him (and then wanting to take down luffy, zoro and nami for trying to steal from him). here as mentioned before he abuses his position to terrorise the civilians and his own employees and prettymuch allowed his son to be a brat because he didn't give a fuck about him or what he did. His ego is also ramped up, i mean dude had a statue made of himself he wanted displayed on top of his own base jsut to show off, and wants to kill luffy NOT because he stole from him or because he's a pirate but because luffy broke his statue and thus hurt Morgan's ego personally and specifically. THe live action morgan also was more willing to show respect to Zoro and even wanted him to join the marines briefly, while anime morgan JUST wants him dead to prove his power.
    -Anime Morgan is a bit more of a pushover. Live action morgan was pretty much capable of doing so some damage and needed both luffy and zoro to beat him, while anime morgan couldn't hurt either of them and was easily taken down twice.

      I really like this breakdown and agree with you, especially Morgan.
      I'm awful at ad lib, so it's possible going off the cuff to explain I didn't get anywhere near your level of insight.
      But I would agree the biggest takeaway in contrasting differences in Captain Morgan is Insecurity (Anime) vs Ignorance/Hubris (Live Action).
      I really think there is a subtle nod at an inferiority complex in anime Morgan. There is the vanity element kf statues and such, but his reprehensible actions are not the ones someone "in charge" takes. His questioning of loyalty at the drop of the hat is a reflection of his own doubts as a leader, needing to be overcome with violence and a show of might.
      Live Action Morgan felt more in command of his position. So much so that he felt his fear inspired the hearts of his Marines to untold levels of loyalty, and that as such, couldn't imagine the wool being pulled over his eyes by Nami. Even against the better efforts of Luffy and his candor was almost their undoing.
      It's fun to see the differences, but even more interesting to see how differences in personality that diverge from their respected mediums ultimately converge to achieve the same means to and end.

      I think they do a great job, but I also know that I'm not able to focus on who the characters are because they sound like another character from another anime.
      Subs are going to help me get fully immersed!

    Glad you are enjoying this. I will say one thing though. Luffy, at least anime Luffy as I haven't watched the live action yet, is actually stupid. I would say that this is more of being willfully stupid though. It isn't shown to a high degree yet, but his lack of understanding and knowledge is real but more likely stemming from any real desire to learn much of anything rather than the lack of ability to do so. He also is not only lacking in common sense, he is a black hole of common sense and sucks up other peoples common sense never to be seen again. Which lets him draw others into his insanity. However, he does have his points. He may be lacking in, to use your words intellectual smarts, but not in intuition. His ability to see through to the heart of people and situations is unparalleled. To the point where it in many cases makes up for his lacking in other areas. And once he figures those things out his actions are swift, decisive, and accurate. The best time this is demonstrated, in my opinion at least, is during the Enies Lobby arc after he hears the back story of a crew mate he is trying to rescue. I won't say anything more because the Enies Lobby arc is not only one of the best arcs in One piece, the best in my very biased opinion, but one of the best in anime. Anyone getting into it who sticks with it that long is in for a treat. Anyway, Luffy's decision to deal with that is a single order that completely changes that crewmates perspective. This is something that I think is often overlooked about him. Yes he is an idiot in many ways. But he has his strengths in other areas. It makes for a very interesting and balanced character.

      I'll definitely defer to your wisdom, as I'm only on Episode 18. But something pretty interesting I've been watching is how a wide-eyed Luffy just takes in a situation. It's kind of fascinating because he doesn't respond immediately.
      It could lead someone to assume he's a bit empty-headed. But, I tend to think there's a level of analyzing going on that we aren't privy to, but I generally think this demonstrates an opposite of being actually stupid.
      I suppose I'll need to see more episodes to have my mind changed.
      But I fully agree he does at times say and do things that show a willful ignorance. But even that I think serves as a catalyst for others to draw on their strength and expertise.

    I really like this one thing that another TH-camr said about Luffy where he is a very selfishly selfless character. Where he can do anything for his friends and be selfish with his own wants, at the same time in certain scenarios and situations.
