    Disclaimer: I never took any piano grade exams nor had a teacher during the first 9 months. When I say I “reached” Grade 5 I refer to ABRSM grades, which are what I check when I choose my pieces. Being able to play Grade 5 pieces doesn’t necessary mean that I have Grade 5 piano knowledge, just means that I played pieces around that level. Please also remember that piano levels are arbitrary up to a certain point, and what is difficult for someone may be easy for someone else. I did learn basic theory by myself: scales, chords, Hanon and Czerny exercises, but I never trained proper sight-reading nor ear training until month 9, when I got a teacher, and I‘m very glad I did!
    Please like and subscribe for support 😁

    Really amazing progress. I was self-taught back in the 80s when I learned myself (there was no internet back then so I was self-taught entirely and learned by ear). On a funny side note, I saw another video and thought I'd just discovered you today but that you seemed familiar until I realized I saw something of yours awhile back, remembering it. I'm so happy for you that this is doing so well. It's your so far first 10K+ view video (an awesome milestone) and is on track to be your first 50K+ view video (another excellent milestone).

      Thank you Altoona, that's very nice of you! This is my only video that got a lot of views, people only seem to be interested in 1 year progress 🤣 I also noticed that unfortunately most people give up after a year or two. I honestly play and upload because I enjoy it, if I did it for views I would have given up a long time ago ahah You're doing great too! Thanks for passing by.

    • @AltoonaYourPiano
      @AltoonaYourPiano 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@piano.is.a.language Yeah, most people tend to give up sadly. I think it might be that learning some pieces can be intimidating for a lot of people. Or they find they were more in love with the _idea_ of being a musician than actually being one. That's why I think (and this is an unpopular opinion among classical musicians) someone should play around with the piano for at least a year before deciding to take piano lessons or not, since they can build a small base to build from and first find out just how much they love piano (or not). And by "piano" I'm including keyboards (which are excellent for beginners and for professionals who are always on the go or have limited space, a digital piano is portable and can be stored in the back of a car and taken places, a real piano is best ideally, key word _ideally_ in this case).
      Definitely agree about the views thing. I average like 250-600 apiece despite being on here for 12+ years, but still have fun (and then there's one of mine pushing a million and two others over 100K, and they aren't even my best work, haha).

    • @piano.is.a.language
      @piano.is.a.language  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Interesting idea that people fall in love with the idea of being a musician instead of actually being one, I never thought of that. For me it’s totally different, I just feel a deep urge to sit at my piano and play and listen to piano music 24/7. Do you feel the urge to produce new music?
      Yeah TH-cam it’s very hard unless you follow trends. I’ll check out your videos when I have a moment ☺️

    • @AltoonaYourPiano
      @AltoonaYourPiano 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@piano.is.a.language Yep, I get these sudden urges and ideas to create a new composition. It'll come out of nowhere and I'll record even when tired. I do have creative droughts though, usually I make about one song a week, but in 2021, after my mom died I barely made anything new. From March 8 - December 31 of 2021, I made only one new composition (in early October) then in 2022 I only made three (January, July, December), then in 2023 I got my mojo back, and creativity came back full swing in January 2024 (almost a year ago, wow has it really been a year? Time sure flies)

    I'm always a bit dubious about people saying they did this from scratch basically, because you did have previous experience 3 yrs. But good luck to you. I started playing the piano again at 62, after 50 years of leaving it alone(1 yr lessons) I'm nearly 69 and only just starting to play grade 5 music. I think this is due to the fact that as you get older your eye and hand co-ordination isn't as good as when you're young. Never the less, I play every day for at least 2 hours and enjoy every minute of it.

    • @piano.is.a.language
      @piano.is.a.language  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s right, everyone is different depending on a huge amounts of factors. One year of proper studying can also be worth much more than 5 years of bad learning. Age and how active you kept your brain during the years surely influence as well, but everything is possible, I’m sure you’re doing great! I personally think that those 3 years of piano I did in school were so basic and low level, it wasn’t even a Grade 1, it was just popular music and chords, not worth much, but still something for sure. 😊

    i'm self-taught. i learned piano sheet at a very young age but picked up piano on/off during high-school. now that i'm retired at 68yr i've been playing at least 3hrs a day. i only played two musics: Czerny op740 and any music score i loved to play. i think Czerny op 740 is like a marathon on your fingers. i'll speed up your skills. they say it'll take 8-10yrs to be proficient but i'll try to do it in 4-5yrs and yes, i hurt my hands sometimes when overplaying Czerny expecially when it's late at night. it's very important to play very slow at first. you want that finger memory to work on you. in 2-3yrs time you'll be a lot faster. if it takes you 8yrs to become professional, no one will be able to tell if you were playing or someone who has 20yrs experience

    I remember my fist day playing piano, I can't even say that I'm playing the piano, i struggle where the right note is. The way you're playing in your first day, that's the way I'm playing with 2 years experience. I'm ashamed, maybe I should quit, I don't know if you're better or I just suck at playing piano. and the week 1 of practicing moza... and similar videos feel like a good idea
    so 3 hours everyday?
    and this is maybe an odd ques but I'm thinking about picking up singing and complementing it with piano, the problem is time ig, I have about an hour to hour and half for both. i actually wanna be good at piano but between both id probably choose singing.
    edit : a psychological ques. is the approach you take , trying to improve as much as possible or to .. just play and enjoy what you like?

      Thank you for subscribing! Yeah, I used to practice a lot last year, unfortunately now I'm back to working full-time in the office so can't practice that much anymore.
      I'm sure 1h of practice is enough, as long as you're constant you'll see results 😁 If you mainly like singing, than I guess piano is more for accompanying, you can do it! Just do what you enjoy most, and you won't get tired 😊

      Regarding the approach, that's a good question. I think enjoying what I do always comes first, as I do believe we tend do give up on things we don't really enjoy. That said, seeing improvement is also something I like. It would be frustrating to spend so many hours on something and not seeing any improvement. I also know that as long as you practice constantly, you will improve no matter what 😁
