Arguably the G wagon is more capable than a current gen range rover.
Alex on Autos You mean in heavy off-road conditions, which neither will see. Another reviewer took the stock G-wagen into such conditions and it failed because it rides on street all-seasons. As an executive transport of “private security” conglomerates, the long wheel base Range Rover is far more capable, in my mind.
The G-Wagon is the ultimate example of SUV marketing.

I’ve already seen a bunch of new G wagons. The head and tail lights and the rear camera are the biggest giveaways
I'm watching this as a form of entertainment since well-- I can't afford, but I doubt almost anyone watching this is even going to buy one. I greatly appreciate AoA reviewing these types of vehicles, from the cheapest sub-compact to ridiculous ones like this or the McLaren.
I saw one of these parked at my work. It was pretty impressive. It was just visiting.

I could never afford this SUV. But I am still watching Alex's review!
One thing they changed that I absolutely hate is the rain gutters on the roof. On the previous gen, they were functional. On the new one, they are not. There is a seam centered right on top of the drivers door and when it rains, water drips right onto the seat every time!
Alex, the GWAGON is very unique. My pick would be this.

I own a G500 and my G550 should arrive this month (Jan 21’)....and I am very perplexed at your “B” fuel economy rating.
These provide slightly better fuel economy than my H1.
I would hate to see what you rate a “D” in fuel economy. ;)
As an update...my 2021 averages 11mpg...
Alex, great review as always. Jay Leno joked a long time ago, saying owners of off road SUV's should take their vehicle off the road at least once a year, or they shouldn't be allowed on the road.

Even if money was no object I'd still take neither if I was forced to pick a vehicle designed with pavement as a secondary it would be a power wagon. I think a lot of the luxury vehicles at this point are just expensive to be expensive with features their target audience dont even know exist.

I would go for the g wagon but I would like to see a compart between the g wagon and the new land Rover defender 110
It would be a tough choice for me between the two. I have always loved the look of the G-Wagon, but I know that I wouldn't really take it off road (if I could afford that vehicle I would get a Wrangler in addition for off-road) I've always had an affinity for Land Rovers (I owned a 65 Series II that was purchased new by my grandfather) I have also owned a Discovery II many years ago. Tough choice for sure, and one that I most likely will not have to make.

I would too. But this G Wagen is no slouch. It has a front, center, and rear differential.
G wagon needs premium gas, which you won't find in many poor countries. So land cruiser wins.
My friend I am sure of what i would pick, a Mercedes G wagon is my dream car. I have a Range Rover sports but G wagon is my last act

G550 main competition is the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon/Sahara but is it better then the Wrangler?
as far as the looks of the G550 the only one i seen that looked impressive was the brabus gwagon that i parked next to at the mall one day, it had nice looking side exhaust and nice looking exterior trim.

I always liked the looks of the G wagon, and I like that they just went all out crazy on the AMG versions. If I had the money, I'd buy one as my 2nd car, in matte black. The stereotypical russian hitman model :-)
Is the front bull bar mandatory in the US? European models it is definitely optional, but building one on the US site doesnt seem to offer any way of deleting it.

No ones going to be spending that kind of money and go off roads with this, which is sad. They will be getting bought by snobby rich women that don’t know how to drive...
At least they can run you off the road much easier in this, or still be able to reproduce after running a red light while juggling their phone, makeup and elephant poo coffee.

I'm wondering, how would a car get a grade of "C" for fuel economy?
The grade is relative to other luxury SUVs and in that group its fuel economy is quite average.

FFS it's G-WAGEN not G-Wagon. The German word is "Geländewagen" hence G-WAGEN.
My Ford super duty has ARB front and rear airlockers plus factory center diff. All for a few hundred dollars.

I believe towing capacity is 7700lbs.
I know it's the more boring choice (and not really in the same stratospheric class), but I'd choose a Land Cruiser instead of either the Range Rover (unreliable) or the G-Wagen (a little too flashy).
Most fancy soccer moms will never notice the cornering on their way to school with their kids ;)
Sadly, this is one of the last "simple" and solid German vehicle. Funny enough it is not assembled in Germany.
I do not understand Jeeps is not offering a cheaper equivalent of the G Wagon. I understand some people want the freedom roof, but the option with a solid roof would make it possible for Jeep to improve safety, quietness and trunk space. In many countries, the freedom roof is simply not part of the culture.

This thing must already be a porker if MB doesn’t even pretend to be cool and green and ESR compliant and put a hybrid power train in it that would at least bring up its mpg. But I get it....target demographic could give a damn about an additional 15,000 in annual gas costs.

The LX570 has a lot of similarities to the G wagon: off road cred, body on frame, luxurious interior. It’s just unfortunate that the LX is so old

I’ll take my 2017 Chevy Suburban 4X4 over this hideous contraption any day and anywhere. It’s roomier, holds eight passengers in comfort and safety, can haul 4X8 sheets of building materials and my wife and I can sleep in back on trips. It is incredibly useful and totally reliable. I would trust it anywhere on Earth. We have never gotten less than 23.5 mpg on any long trips and often take back roads and mountain passes. On some long stretches we have gotten 25+ mpg. Why anyone, regardless of economic status, would ever buy this Mercedes is beyond my comprehension. I would be ashamed to even be seen in one of these wasteful vehicles.
Peter L Since you’re talking about waste. A Toyota Sienna AWD will be roomy, have a 3rd row, be very comfortable, have 5 star Safety, get better fuel economy, hold 4x8’s, allow you to sleep in back, have better resale value, be easier to park and be Twice as reliable!

If you must have this kind of vehicle just get a Jeep Grand Cherokee or Wrangler or a Ford Explorer or Chevy Tahoe.
