David, you are so articulate and clear in how you approach this topic (and others) and there's always a lovely gem that folks (like me) can take away. You didn't say it, but with improvising, it's essentially this, is it not? "Chance favors the prepared mind" - Louis Pasteur. Many thanks as always for giving my mind something to wrap my head around.

Very valuable info. I have played several instruments for nearly 60 years. I teach and mostly play and teach fiddle tunes. I have transcribed players versions of tunes, but rarely work through solos or even octaves. I am quite confident with theory, improvise some and write loads of tunes, but I can take my own playing to a new level. One can always improve and these are the clear steps to take.

Your Patreon membership continues to supply excellent content. The steps you mention are key elements. I am actively drilling all of them, from transcribing to arpeggio practice. It’s a long labor of love…and it works! Thanks

Exactly what I needed! 😂 I almost always learn the tune in different octaves first to help me find how it can be played in different places which I've found very helpful. The step that I do the least, out of the ones you brought up, is probably transcribing someone else's solo which is such a valuable thing to do! I will do it occasionally but usually take the quicker route by finding a tab already written out, which works too but learning a specific arrangement by ear is key too! Great video!! Thank you!

Excellently presented info that applies to all the instruments. Enjoyed hearing your approach on this subject. I do many of the things you spoke of. I've successfully transcribed a couple mando breaks that I felt were way out of my reach. Like you mentioned, it sounded as if only 1 mando was playing. Did them totally by ear. Took alot of time and effort, but achieving that has made a measurable difference in my playing and confidence level going fwd. I'm definitely not an advanced player - only been at it 4 years, self taught - so this skill is certainly obtainable by all. You can do it people!

Relentlessly positive. Of course you can do it.
One of the big things that makes your lessons different.
And the version of the Charlie Parker quote I heard was a tad more, uh, colorful.

I used to use ASD but Spotify stopped allowing playback through third party apps. Any tips to get around this? Is this problem for you too?
