    'Stop judging yourself, and just play music.' Literally the best advice for musicians of all levels.

    The 'open-ness" of your other video was perfect for that lesson. That attribute was very helpful to me.
    I took some BG guitar lessons locally. During the first three sessions, neither the instructor nor I touched a guitar. He taught me how to listen to music and how to hear what the guitar player was doing. At first I thought, "WTF?" but I came to think of those as the most important lessons ever. So, your analysis of the fiddle tunes is fascinating to me, not at all boring, and an essential set-up for the payoff of this video. Outstanding, Marcel!
    You create a most-pleasing the tone with that guitar. That sound is why I play acoustic guitar and no other instrument.

    This lesson is hilarious and I learned a lot while having fun along with Marcel. Bryan Sutton, do not be offended. You are the greatest and everyone knows it.

    Great lesson. I had the realization just recently that the magic number of notes for all these fiddle tune tags was 13. In bluegrass 13 is a lucky number. As long these tags have 13 notes uses pentatonic notes and lands on the root it usually sounds good.

    This is all good stuff. One can also learn about fiddle tunes by listening how actual fiddle players play them.
    Learn to distinguish the melody from the frills and hot licks by listening to several different fiddlers. If you really want to be improvising then you need to know the chords and melody. Fiddle tune melodies are strong, melodic statements that have stood the test of time so it might be a good idea to use variations on the melody as opposed to stringing together a bunch of licks. Use your ears as much as possible.
    Russ Barenberg and David Grier have a real good way with fiddle tunes. Their rhythmic feel reminds me of fiddling.

    Hey Marcel, where would you recommend going to find stripped down versions of traditional tunes? I feel like I only find really ornamented ones and have to piece together the minimal melody from a bunch of different recordings. Thanks!

    • @LessonsWithMarcel
      @LessonsWithMarcel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can definitely take some digging but they're out there. I try to keep the beginning and intermediate tabs on my site close to the original melody! Look for those beginning recordings and arrangements and practice your Google-fu.
